Feeling Secure about Social Security? By Andrew Lee
H
ere are some facts about current Social Security benefits, nationally. The average monthly Social Security check today (2014) is $1,294, and over 59 million Americans receive some type of Social Security check. For most retired seniors today, that Social Security check is their main source of income (though as we’re often reminded in various news articles and programs, Social Security was never intended to be our main source of retirement income). In a recent “Viewpoint” column in our local Cleveland Daily Banner, Allen W. Smith, author of Social Security: Will It Be There for You? offers this startling and sobering assessment of today’s Social Security trust fund—“the fund is empty. The money that is alleged to be in the trust fund has already been spent by the government for non-Social Security purposes.” Some highly educated people with whom I’ve spoken seem to think that this trust fund is actually filled with U.S. Treasury bonds that have monetary value. But that’s not true either. If you picture the trust fund as a gigantic vault hidden somewhere deep in the bowels of Washington, D.C. (which I hope is not the case—this is simply an imaging exercise), that vault would have in it neither cash, nor gold bars, nor U.S. Treasury certificates that can be exchanged for money. Instead, the fund holds only reams of paper IOU’s that state “how much Social Security money has been spent for other things.” Smith makes clear that these IOUs “are not marketable bonds . . . they cannot be used to pay benefits and they cannot be converted to cash.” So where does the money come from to pay the millions of Social Security checks that arrive in people’s mailbox every month? That money comes from current payroll taxes, which doesn’t cover the monthly amount of Social Security checks mailed out, so the rest (the deficit) is borrowed from countries like China. While I didn’t intend for this to be a “gloom and

doom” column, I do feel it’s important to fully grasp the situation in order to spur ourselves to action. I am not counting on Social Security to be there for me, personally, and my retirement date is approximately twenty years from now. I have no idea if I’ll receive any check at all from Social Security, and I’m not planning on any Social Security money when I project how much money I’ll need to save in order to retire comfortably. If by a miracle I do receive some sort of Social Security benefit, it will be icing on the proverbial cake and will come as quite a surprise. Many financial planners advise their clients to wait until age 70 if possible before receiving Social Security benefits because then their monthly benefit amount will be permanently larger than if they had taken their benefits at age 62 or 65. I understand the wisdom of this advice, but for the sake of being different, I’d like to suggest something counterintuitive. If (and it’s a big IF) one is financially secure by age 62 and has the means to retire comfortably without any Social Security benefits, perhaps it might be worthwhile to consider receiving that early Social Security check at age 62 (even with the permanently reduced benefits) in order to bless others with that money. I hope I am able by age 62 to give (donate) my Social Security benefit check every month to whatever charity I see fit, so I can be a blessing and see my donations being put to good use. As Hebrews 13:16 instructs us, “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”

Let Me Ask You a Question
A
re you living a life that others can view you as a role model? To be honest, this article is not the article I first wanted to write. I wanted to write an article that would be a tribute to some of the men who have been role models in my life. I was going to talk about Richie who started me on a path of music. I was going to talk about Marty and how he taught me there was more to music than just singing the melody, or Rusty who pushed me into my first solo. I was going to tell you about Jim who taught me more about life than he would ever know, while teaching me how to play the drums. I was going to talk about Steve and Jack and my grandfather, Willard, and a few more great men who have influenced my life. Then the article was to shift to two of my role models in the faith. I was going to spend the bulk of the article talking about my biggest spiritual influence. His name is Joe. The first time I met Joe he was my 11th grade Sunday school teacher. He had us open our Bibles to Job 41 and read about Leviathan. He said if you can find fire-breathing dragons in the Bible, what other cool things can you find if you learn to look. I learned so much through the years from Joe. My wife even says I told her on our second date that we were going to get married because that's what Joe did with Marsha, and I was just trying to be like him. (Side note: I wonder if she still feels that way after twenty years together and fifteen years of marriage?) There are so many other things I was going to share about Joe. Then I was to talk about my other hero in the faith. The title of this piece is a shout-out to him because I have heard him start so many of his messages with this phrase. As a ma er of fact, this whole piece is also kind of a tribute to him as well. Many times he said the message he was about to preach was not the message he had worked on all week. This 12

is where my article loses its initial direction. I was going to finish talking about Allen and then end this piece by telling you how to use what these men taught me to be role models for your children, but I just got stuck. This article sat unfinished for a month because I did not have the answer to my own question. I knew what these great men did in my life and so many other peoples' lives, but I could not figure out how they were role models for me, or even why what they did meant so much to me. While lying in bed one night, it hit me. The simplicity of it all is probably why I got so stuck. I was looking for some deep theological explanation for why these men were so influential. I may or may not have wanted to impress you with my pontification of this deep theological truth I discovered. Turns out, it was simply that they were . . . men! I remembered the first article I wrote about some mo os I was trying to teach my boys about being men. The reason these guys are role models to me is because they were men leading by example. They are men who take responsibility for their actions. For those who haven't read the first articleleading by example, taking responsibility, and following instructions are three of the mo os I am working on with my children. So often it falls on women to be the spiritual leader that God intended men to be. These men were role models to me simply because they are men doing what God called them to do. So I will ask you again, “Are you living a life that others can look to you as a role model?” I may not be living that life all the time right now, but I am man enough to continue to work on it. You Can Fight The Good Fight

any women do not consider themselves a warrior, but once you live long enough and get tired of being knocked down, you learn to stand up and fight. I am not talking about fighting and swinging in the wind with no purpose, but learning to exercise your faith and use your spiritual weapons to defeat the Enemy. I vividly remember one of the biggest spiritual ba les I have encountered in my Christian walk. It involved my eldest daughter, Kaylee. When she was eight years old, she began to be bothered by childhood fears. At first it was common fears, but then her fears began to escalate. She was being tortured with crazy, impossible thoughts of failure. Then she started having nightmares, thinking she would not live to see the next day. As you can imagine, any parent would be devastated. This ba le went on for several years and Jamie and I were put to the greatest faith test of our lives. We knew there was an anointing on our child’s life, but this fear was taking us to a place we had never dreamed was possible. Not only were we having to trust God and war against the Enemy’s schemes, but we were simultaneously teaching Kaylee how to fight when she was just trying to survive. I praise God that Kaylee was catapulted to violent faith through the power of the anointing, and the spirit of fear was broken off of her life. This is an amazing testimony of grace and of the power of prayer, and also the triumph in fighting “the 14

good fight of faith” (1 Tim.6:12). According to Ma hew 11:12, “The kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force” (NKJV). Does the idea of violent faith seem inconceivable to you? Do you feel like a wimp more often than a warrior? The fact is that you don’t have to do it all by yourself. Your faith has a focus¾Jesus. Jesus leads you, and Jesus is “the author and perfecter of (your) faith” (Heb. 12:2, NAS). This fight is not for sissies. This fight is for people who are strong in the power of Jesus Christ, who know their God, and who know that He is a God who is able to do far more abundantly than all we can ask or think. As a violent warrior in faith, you must do everything that is necessary to stay in faith. You are doing kingdom violence! Violent warriors are focused, and they push aside every distraction. We don’t throw in the towel, and we don’t quit because qui ing is not an option! You have a warrior’s anointing, and undeniable unction from the Holy One, and you must refuse to be denied. So gird yourself up in Spirit and in truth and fight! You are anointed to engage in ba le and prevail-for your children, your marriage, your body, your mind, and in every area of life. Don’t ever forget: you are anointed for this! So fight the good fight, because we win!

WHY I WANT MY KIDS TO CALL ME “THE INTERNET NAZI”
A
couple of things scare me. I’ve mentioned before that these include: 1. The big hairy Muppets with crazy eyes that appear to be cut directly from Satan’s body hair and, 2. The Teletubbies. But today I’d like to add a third and even more horrifying thing to this list: the Internet. Learning how to keep your kids safe on the Internet could be the most important thing you ever do. I miss the days before this grizzly beast ever existed. I remember when people actually called one another, or even (gasp) interacted face-to-face. I remember when pen pals were a thing and when cartoons were reserved for afternoons and Saturday mornings. I also remember when the phrase ‘XXX” was seen only on the nasty, windowless bookstore in the really bad part of town. Now all these things exist at our fingertips, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And what scares me the most (I shudder even as I write) is that I see countless kids wandering around with fully connected smart phones and tablets. Did you know . . . • Most kids are first exposed to porn at less than 11 years of age? • An unsolicited image is often the beginning of a long ba le with porn addiction? • 1 in 5 children age 10-17 have been approached for sex online? • 57 percent of kids have accidentally accessed inappropriate material online? • 75 percent of these young people do not tell their parents about these incidents? • The porn industry is now the 7th largest industry in the U.S.?
(www.netnanny.com) A quick question for parents: “Would you ever let your child sleep by him/herself in one of those seedy X-rated bookstores for a night?” That’s exactly what we do when we hand them their fully connected cell phones and computers, and allow them to roam without supervision. We send them into the X-rated, online store and pray they won’t look (if we pray at all). I know it’s not easy to clamp down on the Internet because it’s literally everywhere, but I’m begging you to make an effort. Don’t just blindly hand them the computer or phone and turn the other way. Take the time. Make the effort. Protect your kids. I can’t tell you how thankful I am that I matured just before the Internet came of age. As a wildly hormone-driven 15 year old, I shudder to think of what I might have seen, or searched out at that age on the Internet, and how it could have gripped me forever. The ungodly, image-altering, esteem-robbing, addiction-creating things that are available at their fingertips need to be monitored ever so closely. Take every effort to make this happen. There’s no possible way I can shield my children from everything out there, but I sure can try. And in the meantime, I’ll try to form them in such a way that they’ll be prepared to respond appropriately when the opportunity does finally present itself, as you can be sure it will. My son is nine and my girls are seven. We haven’t had much of a ba le yet, but it’s coming. When it hits, I want to be known as the Internet Nazi. And the sooner my kids realize it, the be er off we’ll all be.

THE LONG ROAD HOME (A Young Mother Finds Her Way Back to Jesus) By Beth Henderson
W
e pass people every day, each going someplace different. Have you ever stopped to consider where this day might be taking them? Could it be that the fruit of bad decisions has finally bloomed, and the road they’re traveling is the one that leads to judgment? I think about the adulterous woman mentioned in John 8:3-12, and I wonder what it was like for her as she walked the road from her home to stand before the scribes and Pharisees, or when she stood before Jesus, the One who walked on water and claimed to be God himself. I wonder what she feared most as they spoke of her sin and reminded Jesus that the law said she should be stoned. It must have felt similar to the way Avery*, a once-active Lee University student, felt as she drove down Mouse Creek Road and came to the front doors of New Hope Pregnancy Care Center for the first time, or when she faced her parents with the news that an unexpected grandchild was on the way. Only she and one other person knew she was pregnant, but a time was coming when she couldn’t hide her secret any longer. It was time for her sins and her secret to be made known. “I was a college student beyond confused, scared, and alone,” she said. “I don’t think I’ve ever been so frightened in my life. The ride to New Hope was horrible.” The scribes and Pharisees had rocks in hand. Would they be waiting for her, too? Thankfully, that was not the case. “As soon as I got there, I felt like family. I felt like someone really cared and wanted to help me get through this life-changing situation,” she said. And her parents? “I am very thankful that my parents allowed me to come home, though they were not happy and they were disappointed in me. They were there for me and they are my number one supporters.” Avery knew she had been traveling down the wrong road. “I have been raised in church since I was a baby. I knew right from wrong,” she said. But along with her boyfriend, she let her own desires lead her. “We had discussed marriage, and we thought that was the direction we would end up going. We did want to be parents some day, but never before we were married. We followed our flesh instead of doing the right thing and getting married.” Ge ing back on the right road has not been easy for Avery. “This situation has slowed down everything I have dreamed of doing,” she said. “It doesn’t mean I won’t get there one day, but I put a big hold on God’s plan for my life. But God is a God of restoration. My relationship with Christ wasn’t where it should have been, not that it should have taken this situation for me to see God’s grace in my life, but it did, and I have seen God take a mess and turn it to a wonderful gift.” This was a gift that came with a no-return policy. “I wish I had waited to make such a big choice to have sex before marriage, because you cannot take a baby away at 3 a.m. when she is screaming. It is a 24/7 job, and it’s hard. It’s even harder trying to work and go to school.”

It also came with some hard-learned lessons, lessons she’s happy to share with others. “Any way that my story can help other girls, I’m glad to be a part,” she said. And she has one word that sums up her advice: “Wait.” “I have learned that no boy’s love is worth going out of the will of God for your life,” she said. “That boy’s will is far from perfect, and
if you do end up in this situation, your life is not over, but you have to reevaluate your life and focus on a whole new thing: your baby.” But that baby is the focus of a lot of love. “My whole family is in love with my daughter. I
don’t know about you, but after this summer and its heat, I am ready for some cool, fall weather. I plan on taking advantage of the wonderful area in which we live by ge ing outside and spending some time in the great outdoors. For those of you who are looking for some new family-friendly workouts, you should really consider looking into the local hiking trails. It is a great workout and can be enjoyable for the entire family at any age. Why hiking, you ask? Hiking helps reduce the risk of heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes, and it has been shown to make a person happier. It works a variety of different muscles in your body, some of which I can guarantee you never knew you had until the day after a good hike! I know that when I spend time outside, I feel be er about myself, and it helps me put things into perspective. Here is some advice for those who are interested in starting out: 1. Start small 2. Prepare for the worst 3. Overestimate your trail time 4. Do not ignore your backyard 5. Use the buddy system. Why are these important? Starting small will allow you to get used to the activity. If you have never carried a backpack while hiking, I strongly encourage 24

you to plan a smaller hike to get used to the feel of it. Prepare for the worst by packing a first aid kit, something to use as a shelter if needed, and something to use to call for help (such as flares). Overestimating your trail time is important because if you or someone in your group is new to the activity, it can take up to one hour to cover two miles. Remember your backyard and the parks and resources you have around you. We are blessed to have mountains around us that have wonderful trails, but we also have some incredible parks as well. And the buddy system is always important to remember. Let someone know where you are going and when you plan on returning. Speaking of your own backyard, if you have not spent time at the Ocoee, you are truly missing out. There are trails all around and even guided tours offered by the Ocoee Adventure Center. Not only can you take in beautiful scenery, but you can also benefit from the activity. We are blessed with beauty all around, and by stepping outside and surrounding ourselves in it, we can see God in a whole new light. “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps” (Pro. 16:9 NIV). Other hiking opportunities in our area include the Elise Chapin Wildlife Sanctuary, Enterprise South, Amnicola Marsh Trail, the Chilhowee and Tanasi Trail systems, and Great Smoky Mountain National Park. n a previous article, I introduced my mission partner and me and wrote about our love for the people of Haiti. We recently returned from our second trip of the summer, and with each trip I fall more and more in love with Haiti. A few things we

participated in this time included prison ministry, praying over new mothers at a local hospital, and donating much-needed formula to the malnutrition wing in the Pediatric Department. The majority of our trip, however, consisted of spending time with a community we have become very close to -“The Hill.” Three days a week, an organization called “Empowering Haitian Moms” 26

holds a children’s program, mother’s program, and then provides lunch to the community. We were able to spend time with these families-meeting new ones and forming stronger bonds with those we already knew. This ministry provides both physical and spiritual food to this community as well as small loans to provide the mothers with job opportunities that help support their families. The program helps them to help themselves. Child sponsorship is also available through the program to help the children afford school, books, and uniforms. The mothers are all so very sweet, but it’s the children who truly have my heart. As I mentioned when speaking of the orphans in the previous article, Haitian children are so excited about the smallest things. One li le girl named Abigail became my sidekick for the week. Everywhere I went, she had to be with me, holding my hand. If I was si ing down, she was in my lap. I think her favorite thing was simply

playing with my sunglasses. The children are so happy and so content with just being held and receiving some a ention. Not that their families don’t provide love and a ention, but it’s all they need to be happy. Life is so very simple in Haiti,
and I can’t get enough. We are already planning our next trip for May 2015, and it’s going to be a big one. We will a empt to do something we’ve never done before, and we will need an incredible amount of help in doing so. What are we planning, you ask? Well...check back soon!

Their new location at 2390 Spring Creek Blvd. continues the tradition of the hometown flavor by incorporating all the memorabilia from years past in their new decor. Recognized by publications such as National Geographic, Southern Living, and many local and regional publications, Jenkins has been lauded for its outstanding cuisine, expert service, warm hospitality, and community involvement.
The Visit
Recently when my husband and I visited Jenkins, Kay and Don Cowan greeted us with a friendly hello and a warm hug. Kay was eager to tell us about each one of her staff members. These weren’t introductions with the traditional name exchange, but she would 28

brag on each one of the men and women on her staff. For instance, Mac, one of the managers, is a former high school football player who worked at Jenkins throughout his college days until he moved to the Knoxville area for several years. Recently he moved back to Cleveland and is happy to be with the Jenkins team again. Jenkins wouldn’t be what it is today without its loyal customers. One of the many loyal customers from the very beginning is Lloyd Rogers. His loyalty has earned him a reserved parking spot and a special table at the restaurant. It didn’t take long to see that Kay and Don Cowan have a heart of gold. They love what they do; they love their employees, and they have a heart for community. They have provided jobs for thousands and thousands of young people through the years, and many of those past employees have special memories that last a lifetime.
The Facility
Even though the new facility has gone “high tech” to expedite the service, Jenkins continues to be the place for good food, good times, and lasting memories. During warm, breezy days, the covered outdoor patio is complete with fans, heaters, a fireplace, and bigscreen TV. Special musical artists-including blue grass bands-add to the Jenkins Deli experience. A gift shop, complete with Jenkins Deli coffee mugs, T-shirts, and other keepsakes is also a new addition. Kay is eager to explain the history behind the many photographs throughout the facility. A special feature inside is a large “G” gauge train that travels above the dining rooms and appeals to young and old alike. Many young customers are transformed into railroad engineers as they are given a chance to start and stop the train, via a big red bu on at the front entrance. One train car even has a digital message on one of its box cars that travels along a custom-made railroad track that was created by David Benne of Train Installations, LLC of Woodstock, Ga. It’s a great addition to the family environment so much a part of the Jenkins Deli history.
The Food
The all-time favorites are still on the menu-Jenkins’ famous chicken salad, French dip, buffalo burger, and specialty soups-with the addition of steaks and seafood. The fresh salad bar adds a much-requested feature that has something for everyone. In addition to an expanded menu, Jenkins also started opening its doors seven days a week, offering Sunday lunch and dinner.
Jenkins has an active following on Facebook with 7,300 “likes” and 3,408 visits. The menu is posted with special notices before holidays. On July 3, Facebook posted this special menu: “World famous chicken salad, pasta salad, Jenkins sweet tea and more. Open today till 10 p.m. and closed tomorrow.” There are also special “Kids Nights” with activities, such as celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Another longtime feature is Jenkins’ quick, take-out service for busy customers who don’t have time to dine in.
The Memories
Memories are tucked in every corner of the new Jenkins Deli. Kay and Don invited several of their staff members to share some things they would like others to know about the Jenkins Deli family. I use the word family because each person made a point to say that being employed at Jenkins really felt more like being a part of a family. Jenkins’ employee Angela GIbson stated, “Thank you so much for all you have done for me in my life. You both have helped me to turn my life around by giving me a chance. I am incredibly honored to be a part of this team.” Robbin Oughtred, employee for twenty-five years, said, "This is my life and I love it. Being here has helped me to come out of my shell and to grow as a person. I’m grateful to have Kay and Don in my life. They are a part of me growing up.” Kay loved sharing with us about past employees and even generations of families that have worked at Jenkins. “It is such a blessing to have former employees come back to visit with us, bringing family and friends. Some have moved from Cleveland, but on their return visits, they put Jenkins Deli on their agenda to visit and dine with us. So many employees have walked through our doors in the past thirty-eight years. We take pride in their accomplishments and delight in seeing their families when they visit. They become family, and it is so rewarding.” Much has changed during the last thirty-eight years of operation at Jenkins Deli, but what has remained is the family atmosphere, the quality food, and the commitment of the ownership to be a part of the Cleveland community.

fter losing Delaney, I questioned myself and I questioned god? Why? Why our daughter? A friend of mine shared a song with me by Mercy Me, "The Hurt and the Healer," that finally resonated with me that even if I had an answer to the “why's,” the heartache would still be the same because my daughter would still be in heaven. I realized it was okay to ask those questions briefly, but quickly realized I could not get stuck in my grief. I still had a wonderful husband and son to live for. We will see our daughter again in heaven! The healing process had began li le by li le. There were and still are days the grief comes in like waves when I feel like I can’t breathe, and other days were more manageable. I remember thinking, If I can just get through today, tomorrow will be a new day. I graduated nursing school and quickly began working as a cardiac R.N. to keep busy, and, trust me, as every nurse can tell you, nurses are always busy. Then fall came and Tanner and I started talking about the possibility of expanding our family, giving it to God and let Him lead our path. We prayed that if we were meant to be parents again, it would happen. December came and we found out we are expecting! We were so excited and thankful¾but petrified at the same time. We prayed for the

baby growing snug in my stomach everyday asking the Lord to help her grow and thrive, and, in the end, come home. Everything was great in the pregnancy until the dreaded 27-week mark (that is when I had Delaney). When we went for our regular OB visit and ultrasound, the doctor came in and told us that Hadley had a severe birth defect that he had never actually had a patient with called Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. We were devastated! He quickly referred us to the high risk doctor and then we were referred to Houston, Texas, for Hadley to be evaluated. All I could think was, Not my baby . . . not again. We prayed and prayed, went to Houston where they ran a lot of tests and gave us the wonderful news that Hadley was on the good side of CDH and should be a candidate to be born in Nashville, much closer to home. Praise the Lord! We headed home cautiously optimistic. We were evaluated in Nashville and instructed about her surgery after birth, her stay in the NICU, and set my C-section date. I was so worried I couldn't sleep. There were many nights I laid on the couch Googling CDH success stories just to try to find something good to hold on to, but sadly with CDH, there isn't much good out there. All I could do was have faith. We headed home again and continued to have weekly doctor’s

visits. On August 21 Hadley Claire Goins was born, weighing 7 pounds and 7 ounces. Our “rainbow” of hope was here! The NICU and surgery Hadley had after birth did great, and six days later she had surgery to repair her defect with CDH. There is an opening in the diaphragm that allows abdominal contents to enter the chest and apply pressure to the heart and lungs. Three days after surgery, Hadley was oxygen free and has never looked back! They told us most CDH babies leave with a feeding tube, but Hadley began to learn to eat from a bo le (praise the Lord). She takes everything by mouth. They told us the earliest a CDH baby had ever left Vanderbilt NICU was after five weeks. Praise the Lord she left in three weeks! I say all this to say that our journey from heartache to healing is nowhere near over, but with faith, hope, and love this wonderful li le reminder that God is still faithful even in the most unimaginable circumstances named Hadley came to Tanner, Landon, and me. We have healed in more ways that we can describe. We will always be a party of five with four on earth and one in heaven. Hadley is home with us and is ge ing ready to celebrate her first birthday!

et’s define a romantic relationship between a man and a woman. Some folks are “clingy,” some autonomous. Some are like a news story I read of a young woman who called, texted, and emailed her ex boyfriend 77,000 times in a week. She’s been arrested and classified as a stalker (really)? Some individuals are like Archie Bunker: “I told you I love you in our wedding vows; I’ll let you know if that changes.” We can find a level middle ground. There’s a book by Gary Chapman titled The 5 Love Languages. If you haven’t read it, I encourage you to check it out. The book was wri en for people to understand how others respond. Readers will know their love language and that of their spouse; this will help them know how to communicate. This same concept is in Kendrick Alex’s book, The Love Dare book. Study your spouse, make note of his or her personality and act accordingly. We are a diverse people with varying points of view. When the newness of a relationship wears off, what do you do to keep your interest? Is a relationship in your view a fleeting thing like two ships passing in the night? Do you believe God has a plan for you to enter and stay in a relationship your whole life? I do! Stay in “the game;” stay in the relationship, and figure out new plays, nuances, and a variety of interests. Telling the same old story over and over has to get old after a while. How do you keep your spouse interested in you? What can you add to this relationship? How can

you make it worth sticking around longterm? These are challenges that must be met, analyzed, and overcome. There is no such thing as “seven steps to a happy relationship.” We have a responsibility to figure out and engage in our spouse’s life no couch potatoes allowed. Men and women are very different, which is why relationships are a challenge. But then again, the challenge can be fun. Study your spouse by investing the time, energy, and will to allow your natural imagination to flow. You can do this. God created man as the head of the house and the woman as a helpmeet, meaning men should lead, not coerce or dictate. Ladies join in. We are both in this together. Marriage, (long-lasting relationship) is not 50/50; both partners must give 100 percent. “Sometimes you win; sometimes you lose” is not a phrase that should enter the relationship. We both win all the time. If this becomes a competition, the “game” is over. Men can’t do this on their own; even God said it is not good for man to be alone. So what did He do? He took from Adam all those feminine parts and put them together in Eve. Then God said, “Very Good!” And Adam said WO-man (I had to do it). Men and Women are not in a partnership; they are in a relationship. They are here not to make a profit, but to pro-create the will of God on the earth.

ecently, I have been looking for Christmas presents for my family. December is summer time in South Africa—where I was raised, and in a ending some of the local summer sales, I am bound to find great deals for my family’s Christmas gifts. As I was shopping, I became privy to a conversation between an older son and his elderly mother. Both of them were purchasing iPads for each other. As I eavesdropped on this conversation, it became apparent that the ninety-year-old mother was far more savvy with her knowledge of the iPad than her son. She was trying to convince him of the iPad’s features and how it would benefit him at his job and help to manage his daily activities. As I listened, I was surprised and impressed by her technological know-how. She noticed that I was eavesdropping, and I was momentarily embarrassed. However, she looked at me and giggled pleasantly, saying, “Honey, I’ve researched all this. You know I’ve got time on my side.” I then began to talk with her for a few minutes, and I was enlightened, to say the least. She had been using an iPod to listen to music for about two years prior to her newest purchase. The music she downloaded to her iPod was mainly “oldies” that stimulated her memory in so many ways. As she showed me her playlist, it was apparent the benefit each song brought to her life. I began to tell her how much I loved running with my own iPod, and how each purposely chosen song made me run faster and with more intensity. She related very well to my analogy, stating that the ‘80s hit “Eye of the Tiger” made her want to walk and almost run with her walker! Through music, she was able to relate very well to her past and to her present. She even began to relate how certain songs reminded her of restaurants that she visited with her husband, and made her eat more than she normally would. We laughed and she asked me if many of my residents at Garden Plaza had found the iPod beneficial to them? I related to her that we were offering classes to familiarize our residents 34

with the features of the iPad. I said I would work on offering iPod classes as well. She inspired me to think about music, and how the use of the iPod, iPad and Bluetooth made music readily available to everyone. No longer do we have to purchase an entire tape or CD to listen to one song. We can now tailor our listening to the songs we love, and with the use of these small devices, go practically anywhere with our music. These devices can have a major impact on the lives of our older adults in stimulating memory, calming, and energizing their spirits. As Shakespeare said, “If music be the food of love, play on.” This Christmas I am really considering teaching my in-laws and parents the benefits of the iPad and iPod in their daily lives. Maybe the gift of time taken to teach them to use these devices, which are sometimes intimidating, will alleviate their fear of the future and continue to inspire a zest for life!

A Glimpse of Heaven to Me Today By Kelly Hixson
W
hen God holds me in His arms and lets me cry on His shoulder without me speaking a word, I wish I could stay in His arms forever. Gathering myself together, I wipe my tears away, make my way to the nearest restroom, and talk to myself: “Okay Kelly, be strong; get it together. Do not let people see you all messed up.” I opened the restroom door and smiled. As I walked out, I looked up and was greeted with a friendly, smiling face and an envelope. Like a flood, God immediately brought me back to my quiet time with Him yesterday as I wrote on “Well Doing” (see Gal. 6:9). I turned on my computer and saw a scripture posted about “well doing.” Si ing down to read a magazine, I read that same scripture about well doing. I confess to friends that the 36 September 2014
past few days I haven’t been able to write or hear God speak to me. I feel I am at a loss for words. Everywhere I look, I see no end. Am I just weary? God where are You? I can’t hear You; I can’t feel You, but I know You are there. I know Your power; I know Your truth, and I know Your love for me. So even on those days You feel so far away from me, I’m going to keep on digging; keep on “well doing.” I will keep on si ing here in my same spot where I wait for You. I have to confess, I’m not always so strong. I do get weary, and I do become frail. I get scared, and I even doubt. Sometimes I don’t have the words to pray and I may begin to sink, but that is when I do what I know to do-wrap up in His arms and cry out from the innermost being of my heart. He knows the words my heart is saying, because He crafted my heart with His bare hands.
I again hold on to His promises because He has never let me down-not even once. His word is TRUTH, and you be er believe it! My advice for you and for me today is TRUST HIM (even when we can’t see, touch, hear or feel Him) because He is there, and don’t give up keep on doing what is good! “Give and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over” (Luke 6:38 NLT.) The amount you give will determine the amount you get back. So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time, we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up (see Gal 6:9).

Sharing God’s Goodness By: Dave Carringer “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that you may now proclaim the praises of Him who has called you out of the darkness and into His marvelous light!” (1 Pet. 2:9 NKJV).
D
o you have any idea how special you are to God? The scripture above is filled with treasures of revelation that often goes undiscovered by many (most) believers! There’s never been anyone like you! Of course we are chosen corporately to be one in Christ as His Body, but each of us has been given gifts by God to share with others in a special and unique way! And there is no one who can share those peculiar God gifts like you! Through Christ, we have been given the very presence of God himself, in the person of the Holy Spirit who lives within us. Unlike the servants of the Old Covenant, we have been called “friends.” And not just friends, but sons and daughters—joint heirs with Christ! We get to proclaim to the world the praises of God! The word used for praises here (arête) means excellency, goodness, virtue. Virtue was used in biblical times to refer to manifestations of God’s miraculous power! “And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the crowd and said, ‘Who touched My clothes?’” (Mark 5:30 KJV). The woman with the issue of blood was immediately healed when she touched the clothes of Jesus! The very power of God hit her in a moment of time, so filling her up with God’s love and power that sickness no longer had any room to remain in her! We’ve been chosen not by the will of man, nor of flesh and blood, but of God’s own will by His own Spirit! (see John 1:13). Now, in Christ, filled with His Spirit, we can boldly proclaim the excellency, goodness, and power of God through the gift of the Holy Spirit who resides 40

within us! We can lay hands on the sick and they will recover! We can bind evil spirits and loose all the goodness heaven has into the darkness that surrounds this world! We’ve been reconciled to God in Christ (total peace has been made between us and God) and as ministers of that same reconciliation, we can boldly tell others, “All your sins have been forgiven, once and for all, and God is not keeping a record of them any longer!” (see 2 Cor. 5:18-21). These are things the priests of the Old Covenant could never do, but we are the people God chose to show the world just how good He really is! We are His royal priesthood! In John 17:18-19 Jesus prayed this for you: “As you [Father], sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself that they too may be truly sanctified [set apart, made peculiar as I am] (NIV). You’ve been blessed with every spiritual blessing heaven has, and the Holy Spirit (God’s very own life and power) resides within you right now! Go out and be peculiar! Be unusual! You are distinctive in nature, because that's who you've been made in Christ! You belong exclusively to Him and have been made one with Him! Go show someone today just how excellent, good, and powerful your Papa in heaven really is! For it is the goodness and kindness of God that will draw this world to repentance (a truly changed mindset about God and life). GO! Be peculiar! Make Papa smile by enjoying who you really are in Him!

INGREDIENTS: • 12 Wooden Toothpicks • 4 Ounce (Half of 8-oz Package) Cream Cheese, Softened • 6 Jalapeno Chili Peppers (2 to 3 Inch), Halved Lengthwise, Seeded • 4 Slices Bacon
DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat grill. Line cookie sheet with foil or cooking parchment paper for easy clean-up. Soak toothpicks in small bowl of warm water to prevent burning. 2. Cut each bacon slice crosswise into thirds. Wrap one piece of bacon around each stuffed chili half; secure with soaked toothpick. 3. Cook on medium heat 25 minutes or until bacon is crispy and chili peppers are tender. Serve warm.

f you’re like some some, you’ve probably never heard of me yet. I first came to Cleveland, Tennessee, in 1997 on a basketball scholarship to Cleveland State Community College. And although I was taught to always go to church, I never really had a relationship with Jesus until six years later. In 1998 I got involved with creating music after I heard my best friend from my hometown rapping, and I enjoyed it as a hobby. I went on to finish my collegiate career at Tennessee Wesleyan College in 2001 earning a bachelor of science degree in business administration with an emphasis in general management. Shortly afterwards, I moved to Knoxville in an a empt to make more money than anyone I had ever known and live a lifestyle unlike anyone I had ever seen. But long days of chasing money and dark nights of club-

hopping soon left me broke and homeless! While si ing in my one-bedroom apartment and starring at an eviction notice, I wondered what I was going to do next. On October 19, 2003, I did something I knew I should have done much sooner-surrendered my life to Christ! Since that day, I have never looked back! I soon discovered my calling was to preach the Word of God through music in such a unique way that people who have never listened to rap or don’t care for rap, love my music! As a Christian rapper, I use my God-given gift and calling to reach the youth through music, including anyone else along the way. In 2012, I released my first album titled “Born 2 Win.” In 2013 I released “The Real Life Mixtape Vol 1” as a free download exclusively online that has landed in eight different countries to date. On July 15, 2014, I released my third project titled “Wordman,” which has created such a buzz that it’s being recognized in several states all over the U.S. Currently, God has specifically instructed me to focus on Cleveland and to go get the people, so that’s what I’m doing daily! I firmly believe that even though the message of Jesus Christ will never change, the delivery of it has to if we (the Body of Christ) plan to reach the next generation. When I tell people I’m a Christian rapper, they immediately close off to what I have to say because of the word rap. I don’t take it personal because I will be the first to admit, some rap is crap! However, I see rap as a vehicle and the Word of God is the “Engine.” While some still have a hard time seeing past the rap genre, I’m confident that I represent something much greater, and more importantly, Someone who is greater, and that Someone is Jesus Christ! Mercy &

haring the Good News in a foreign culture is a challenge. And when you don’t know the language, it is more difficult. When my wife Paule e and I were faced with that opportunity in China, we prayed for mercy. From the moment we climbed the 88 steps to reach our 6th-floor apartment in Shenyang, we knew we were in the right place. The day we moved in, Cherry and Peter, our next door neighbors, came over to introduce themselves and welcome us. They knew some English, and it was a thrill to meet them. As we were ge ing acquainted, Cherry saw something on our coffee table and immediately sent her son David next door to their apartment. When he returned, we realized she had spo ed our Bible and had sent him to get hers. She showed us her name in the flyleaf, and, with enthusiasm, asked us to teach them the Bible. This was not part of the plan in the commitment we had made for a year to a charitable organization. However, we were thrilled with the possibility and agreed to accept that opportunity. We were not trained educators and never considered ourselves teachers, but we knew we would accept the challenge because it was divinely orchestrated. And we knew that, in a sense, we all are teachers as others are influenced by our lives. After agreeing on a day of the week and time, we soon began preparation. Thankfully, we found some on-line resources that were helpful. On Sunday mornings, after our normal activities, we began a 15-minute walk to catch a bus. After 30 minutes on the bus, we took another walk to our meeting place for our international fellowship. We joined a small group of expatriates from several countries for praise and worship, prayer, and a sermon. Our group included university students, teachers, and employees of the U.S. consulate. Immediately afterwards, we would catch a return bus or taxi. We quickly ate our lunch and prepared for our Bible lesson with Cherry and Peter. We served a few snacks, and they usually brought some fruit. After prayer, I would endeavor to teach our lesson, verse by verse, step by step, beginning with John chapter 1. Having accepted Christ at young ages and grown up in Christian homes, we found 46

that concepts that were second nature to us were difficult to convey to people of a different culture who knew so li le English. Phrases like “In the beginning” and “the Word was God” were difficult to explain. But we kept on trying as Cherry and Peter faithfully returned each week and listened patiently to our simple explanations. Paule e had a great idea to end our sessions by telling an Old Testament story in her own words. David would stay for these, and he and his parents were very a entive each week. One Friday night we visited a group of believers who met in the home of an American man. Although most were expatriates, the group included a few Chinese. Normally, they met separately because it was illegal to meet together. We had a wonderful time of worship and fellowship. Afterwards when we arrived at the bus stop, we met one of the Chinese ladies who had a ended. We learned a li le about each other, and she helped us find the right bus to take us to our apartment. When she knew we hosted a Bible study, she was eager to join. We gave her our address, the time we met, and our cell phone number. I was a li le hesitant at first, but it turned out to be a blessing to our meetings. Because she was a Christian and knew English very well, she was a godsend to our meetings, since she could explain to Cherry and Peter those things with which we struggled. As I shared concepts that were hard for our neighbors to understand, our new friend would explain them to their satisfaction. If you can believe it, our new friend’s name was Mercy. Oh, how much God knew we needed mercy, so He sent it to us in human flesh. Christmas happened to be on Sunday that year. Our time with friends was precious. We shared the Christmas story as well as gifts and special food. Mercy brought a friend, and her name was . . . you guessed it, Grace. God was so loving and kind to supply both Mercy and Grace to us when we needed them the most.

I
was so excited to have “date day” with my nephew, Spencer! We always have so much fun together and when I’m with him, I have respite from my adult issues. Spencer reminds me of the power of love, simplicity, laughter, and freedom! I met my brother and sisterin-law at a local bookstore and Spencer and I hit the ground running, looking for book deals. While looking at books, I asked Spencer what he wanted to do on our date day, and he looked at me with those big brown, trusting eyes and said, “It doesn’t ma er, Auntie. Whatever you have planned is fine.” We continued browsing the aisles for books and found great deals! Afterwards, Spencer decided that lunch would be pizza and salad, so we made our way to one of his favorite spots and ate to our heart’s content. While we were enjoying the comforts of the air-conditioned restaurant, we ate our pizza, then dessert, and talked as we took it all in. That’s when 50

I asked Spencer about a recent camping trip he and his dad went on with the church. His eyes lit up as he told me about sleeping in a tent, cooking their own food, and going to the bathroom in the middle of the night! I asked Spencer if he was afraid to leave his tent and walk to the bathroom in the dark. “I wasn’t afraid, Auntie. My daddy went with me.” His tone told of the power of his trusting relationship with his dad and that when he was with him, he was not afraid. He knew that everything would be all right and everything was all right. Spencer and I left the restaurant fully satisfied and proceeded on our way to shop at a friend’s indoor yard sale. We were blessed with more deals; then, we went home where Spencer played with his newly purchased toys, and I prepared dinner. I watched him as he sat on the floor perfectly safe and content because he was home in a place familiar to him, a place where he felt loved and wanted; a
place of belonging and happiness. And I thought of Abba God my daddy. No ma er where I am or what I’m going through, like Spencer, I am not afraid because my Daddy is with me. No ma er how dark things appear, I can step out into it because I am not alone. And when I am with my Daddy, I am not afraid. I will fear no evil for He is with me! Our challenge is to stay close to our heavenly Father and to stop trying to walk alone in the dark. We can’t make it without His guiding, loving presence of protection. You and I should follow Spencer’s lead and take the great big hands of our Daddy and step out into the darkness, knowing with confidence that we will not be afraid, because we are never alone!

Do You Feel It? By Rusty Asble
I stopped to look around and quickly realized what I was feeling. Yep, there it was . . . the white oak and hickory trees leaves were flipping in the breeze ever so gently. The towering green giants began to sway back and forth. As the breeze made its way to me, I felt the coolness, the touch, the change it brought, and the childhood memories that came as it again wrapped around my face. I turned to my colleague and asked, “Do you feel it?” A look of weirdness came back to me not sure what I

lorida, especially the Central West Coast, is not known for cool or cold weather, but when I was a child I remember when you could feel the change in the air. As an outdoor kid, I knew immediately what it meant-autumn was coming. I loved that time of year. Summer was ending, day light hours were fading, and the ever-so-slight cool breeze (to us) would wrap around our face. I would close my eyes and think it was the breath of God. Now please understand, fall was not a dramatic experience in Florida. We did have a few leaves turn,
was asking, but I felt it. It’s that time of year again. Let the cool breezes begin. Let the leaves turn brilliant yellows, oranges and reds. Let the excitement in air confirm to us all that God has a plan, a timing and season for our world we call Earth. Let this breeze wrap around you and think of Him, and then thank Him for this season-the one you are walking and experiencing. So can I ask you, Do You Feel It? Come Away With Me

usy, busy, busy . . . that is the word for us all. When we finish one project, it is on to the next and the next. Somehow in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we can grow cold and distant from God. Even if we are in ministry, still we can find ourselves overworked and overwhelmed. As I was praying about this year’s women’s conference, I kept hearing the Lord say, “Come away with Me. Come away with Me. I miss My time with you.” I began to look at how busy my life was: family, church, friends, job, school, responsibilities. My planner is color coded because I am somewhat OCD about organization. It looks like a masterpiece from Picasso. In my examination of my planner, I saw very li le free time. Should I give God a color for my planner? I wonder what color it should be, red for the blood of Jesus? Where can I fit it in? Maybe I should pencil in God between the school line and groceries. Wait, before church, I have a few minutes between sound check and Sunday school preparation. No, that is not good. Then I hear those words again: “Come away with Me. I miss My time with you.” “But God I am doing things for You. All of this is for You. Mother, wife, school volunteer, Sunday school teacher54

all of this is for You. And still You want more from me?” The big revelation is that God doesn’t want my works; He wants my love. Yes, He loves all I do for Him. He loves that I am commi ed to the ministry, commi ed to my husband and kids, commi ed to being a Christian. But what is it all worth unless I have a close relationship with Him? When I first got saved, I spent time in the Word, time in prayer, and time just listening for His sweet voice. He was my one focus. Everything revolved around Him. Now, it is all on an assembly line. Hurry, God! You know I am so busy. STOP! Now is the time to just slow down! Some things are good things, but not God-things. Recently, I read the scripture, “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain” (Ps. 127:1 NKJV). I wondered how many “in vain” things I have done, trying so hard to make things work, when God was not really in it. At this point in my life, more than ever, I want the Lord to build “His house.” I am willing for Him to be my Supervisor. When He speaks, I will obey. When He says “Go,” I will go. My planner is changing and I am happy. I have invited Him to be in control! For too long we have gone to church, but we have not functioned as the church (the called-out ones). If we are going to be that force that will change the world, first we need to respond to our primary calling, “Come away with Me! Become My “Beloved!” (see Eph. 1:6).
