Can You Hear the Breakthrough? “… for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13).

powerful move of the Spirit you used to enjoy? It's vitally important for you to understand today that God’s
movement in your life is not a one-time thing. God wants to do something powerful for you every day. He is all the while effectively at work, both to will and to do His good pleasure.
And the Bible says that you have an enemy—but that enemy can’t stop your breakthrough. When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed King of Israel, they planned and strategized to fight and capture him. In the same way, your enemy is listening to what’s happening in your life right now. Anytime that you have been positioned or anointed for greatness, the enemy listens for your anointing to be announced. He prepares, plans, and strategizes. He says, “My assignment is to prevent that from happening.” Your enemy wants to bring turmoil, testing, stress, and struggle. "It is my assignment," the enemy says, "to keep you—the anointed one, the one called by God, appointed by God, anointed by God— from your greatness. I have an assignment to stop." That's why you feel like you're fighting everything right now. That's why you feel like you’re up against everything right now. That's why you're dreaming bad dreams right now. That's why you're having health struggles right now. That's why it
God is active in your life right now. He doesn’t take time off. He doesn’t take Passover, Resurrection Sunday, or Pentecost off; He neither slumbers nor sleeps. He is moving right now; he is currently active and at work
feels like you can't make ends meet financially right now. It’s all because the devil has heard you're anointed, and he has determined to get in the way of what God is doing in your life. Your enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy. He disguises
on your behalf. He is in all things, of all things, and creating all

powerful and more anointed. I have called you out.”
The Lord wants you to know today that He has already gone ahead of you in your planned destination. He already IS where you think you're going. He has already made a way where you don't think there is any way at all. Someone reading this has been waiting for the way to come into existence, but you need to know that God is already there. He does not rest, and he is actively at work in your prayer life. God is actively at work on your prayer list right now.
Since God anointed and crowned you, the enemy has no power to prevent what God is doing to do in your life. Sometimes we make our situations bigger than we make the God who lives in us. We magnify the problem. But, God has anointed you to be great for Him. He’s a massive God who makes even the biggest problem look insignificant. If you will keep your eyes and ears trained on Him, you will hear your breakthrough coming and nothing will hinder it.

Gò0dNews for Kids
Read, Pray, Obey o, the school year is in full swing now. I want to challenge you to make this the best school year ever! How can you make that happen? Here are a few suggestions: First, read! Begin every day with God’s Word. It doesn’t matter if you are five or 100; God’s Word is a necessity in our lives. Why? Psalm 119:105 tells us that God’s Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. How can you see where you are walking or what to avoid without a lamp and a light? His Word will even shine on our paths in the bright sunlight. Begin every day with God’s Word. Next, pray! Prayer is communication with God. Just like you talk with your family and friends, you need to talk with God. A good practice in prayer is following these six steps: 1. Praise God for who He is: Creator, Giver of Life, Provider, Father, trustworthy, and faithful. 2. Thank God for all He has done for you: clothing, food, family, home, friends, church, life, strength, and answering specific prayers. 3. Confess your sins to God. Confession means that you are agreeing with God that you have sinned against Him and that you are sorry for sinning. Have you told a lie, said bad words, treated someone unkindly, been selfish, taken something that wasn’t yours, or thought bad thoughts? Confess them to God and tell Him you are sorry. 4. Intercession. That’s a big word which simply means to pray for others. Pray for your parents, siblings, teachers, friends, and
8 // September 2019
your enemies, too. Pray for their needs to be met and for their relationship with Jesus to grow. 5. Supplication. Pray for yourself. Do you need to be kind to someone? Do you need extra money for a field trip? Do you need strength and courage because someone is bullying you? Do you need help in controlling your thoughts and actions? Ask God to help you and to meet your needs. 6. Listen. You cannot have a conversation with your friend unless you listen to what they say. How do you listen to God? You get quiet and you read His Word and listen for Him to lead you. He will! Sometimes, we are so busy listening to all the noise in this world that we cannot hear God. Just listen. So far, we have “read” and “pray.” The last step is, obey! You have to do what God says. This is so difficult sometimes. When you are tempted to be mean to someone, obey God’s Word about being kind to others. If you see others being mean to someone, remember that how you treat others is how you are treating Jesus. Are you tempted to gossip, steal, watch ungodly things, or cheat? Remember God’s Word and do it! Obey. How can you make this the best school year ever? Read, pray, and obey! This will not only make for a good school year, but it will also make for a good life: a life that is pleasing to God every day.

The 80/20 Principle MONEY MATTERS
WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.
H
ave you ever wondered if your hard work and daily tasks are bringing you closer to your goals? Let me introduce you to “Pareto’s Principle,” named after Italian economist and sociologist Vilfredo Pareto (18481923). Pareto’s Principle has also come to be known as the 80/20 Principle. Pareto discovered that in the natural world as well as human nature, 80 percent of efforts produced only 20 percent of productive results, while 20 percent of efforts produced 80 percent of the desired results. Here are a few examples: Pareto observed that only 20 percent of the plants in his garden produced 80 percent of his vegetables. Likewise, he observed that 80 percent of the world’s wealth is owned by 20 percent of the world’s population. And here’s the important and practical application for all of us: 20 percent of all our actions, decisions, and efforts will produce 80 percent of our results. Conversely, 80 percent of our efforts will typically produce only 20 percent of desired results. In other words, we waste a lot of time, don’t we? So consider: what are you doing everyday that honestly brings you closer to your goals? Since this is a personal finance column, think about your financial goals (assuming you have clearly written financial goals—you do, right?). What are you doing today and every day to bring you closer to your financial goals? Please don’t say you’re working to earn a paycheck—that’s a good start, but many people spend every dollar they earn and then go into debt to spend even more, so earning money by itself is not really bringing you closer to your financial goals. It’s what you do with your money that will enable you to achieve your goals. Write your financial goals, and then write a list of “action
10 // September 2019
steps” beneath each goal and map out a plan for how you will realistically and efficiently achieve these goals. For example, one goal might be “pay of entire $2,000 Visa bill in five months,” where the action steps for achieving this might include “set up auto-pay from checking account for $400 per month for next five months.” Remember that being “busy” every day is not the same as being “productive” in achieving your financial goals. In his best-selling book The Four-Hour Work Week, Tim Ferriss cautions against “inventing things to do” merely to keep us “busy” every day. Instead, we should focus daily on only one or two tasks or decisions which will truly lead to financial progress. Yes, I understand that dishes need washed, houses need cleaned, dogs need walked, and lawns need mowed. But how often do we put these tasks at the top of our to-do lists, instead of tasks that will truly improve our finances, such as opening a Roth IRA account or 529 kids’ college investment account and setting those on monthly auto-draft? Instead of checking email or social media ten times per day, why not review how much your bank is charging you every month for your checking account or overdraft fees? Or review your cell phone and TV plan to see how much you might save by switching. Twenty percent of these financially-prioritized tasks can result in an eighty percent positive swing in your finances So be sure to prioritize tasks that will move you toward your financial goals, and leave the “busy” stuff for later. Shakespeare reminds us in his most famous play Hamlet, “to be too busy is some danger.” Proverbs 18:9 cautions, “Slack habits and sloppy work are as bad as vandalism.”

While in prison, Eberhard once wrote to Dietrich, “You write that, after marriage, our friendship is to be counted among the stable things of life…Friendship is completely determined by its content and only in this way does it have its existence…” Married or not, friendship is very important, but how do we know if our friendships are

Are You 24% Lead Crystal? ome years ago, when my son was about to be married, I spent a memorable day with his fiancée making wedding plans. We went to the mall, and she showed me the china and silver patterns and choices for the bridal registries. I had the time of my life and was a young brideto-be again, remembering how my then-husband-to-be and I had planned for and anticipated our lives together. In those days, I had stars in my eyes, dreaming of entertaining friends with lovely, elegant dinners on shining, shimmering, delicate china and crystal. We even got a few pieces of crystal and some china as wedding gifts, and although I drank in its beauty with my eyes (and even used some of the pieces a few times), mostly it was all put on a shelf or in a display area to protect and preserve its delicate beauty. After all, fine china and crystal are only used for special occasions and handled with great care, right? But 24% lead crystal—well, now, that’s a different story. 24% lead crystal is lovely and beautiful yet sturdy, durable, and strong, so it can be used and enjoyed every day. Oh, it can be shattered and destroyed the same as delicate crystal. However, treated with respect and used properly, 24% lead crystal will endure and give many years of lasting pleasure and service to its users because it’s made of outstanding quality material. Along with most women I know, I enjoy things of refinement and class. But, my view of class has changed a lot since those former days of romantic dreaming. After a few years of interaction with everyday people who have everyday problems and everyday needs, encountering people who have been through the horrible gutters that life had dragged them through, I’ve come to the conclusion that coffee mugs and plastic tea glasses can quench thirst just as well as fine crystal. It’s okay to love beautiful things, but it’s much more important to have the ingredients necessary to stand up to the hard knocks and wear that life dishes out. You see, real class doesn’t mean owning and displaying beautiful things or having a high social rank, status, or prestige. No, real class means being sturdy, durable, strong, and available

to minister wherever you see hungry and thirsty people: giving them the Bread of Life and the Living Water. An essay I discovered a few years ago explains class well: Class is sure-footed and confident. It can handle whatever comes along. It has a sense of humor. It knows a good laugh is the best lubricant for oiling the machinery of human relations. Class never makes excuses. It takes its lumps and learns from past mistakes. Class bespeaks an aristocracy that has nothing to do with ancestors or money. Some wealthy “blue
bloods” have no class, while some individuals who are struggling to make ends meet are loaded with it. Class is real. It can’t be faked. It never puts on airs. Class never tries to build itself up by tearing others down. Class need not strive to look better by making others look worse. Class can “walk with kings and keep its virtue and talk with crowds and keep the common touch.” Sounds like 24% lead crystal to me! Are you prepared to meet the challenges of daily life, live life to the fullest, and minister life-giving water and spiritual food to people who need it from your vessel? If not, allow the Potter to make you over. He only makes “classy” vessels! About The Author

I suppose when I think of Brother James’ words, I think first of “cussin’.” Surely, using bad language is not a good thing. But, I believe what James is getting at is deeper. Many people use expressions which invoke curses on another person, but do they really consider the spiritual effects of such words? In part, I think it is to this kind of speech that James referenced. An old phrase says, “Sticks and stones may break my

I am here to tell you that you are not to be centered around “…religion, and its false doctrines and teachings.” You must have a real relationship with the One True God. Scripture tells us that we must be born again. Anything less than that is nothing but hypocrisy. I’m not saying church attendance is wrong, nor am I saying involvement in you local synagogue is wrong. What I am saying is if you put anything above the One True God of the universe, you are in sin. I am here to encourage you to seek out your own salvation with fear and trembling as we are told to in our instruction manual for life, the Bible. Likewise, women who edify their husbands publicly and privately (as mine does!) reveal not only the caliber of the man but of the woman he was blessed to marry. I’ve tried to teach my sons to be men who honor women: not just their wives or girlfriends, but ladies in general. The key that opens the door to this respect is not the character or appearance of, or the situations in which they encounter, these wonderful creations. by Beverly J. Cowley
ou changed my diapers, wiped my nose;
First pimple, first heartache, first learning to drive—
Cooked my food and washed my clothes.
We went through it together and came out ALIVE!
When my poopy messes nearly drove you insane,
You taught me so much in my growing up years, Lessons given with patience, mercy, and tears.
We sang, “Jesus Loves Me” and “ABC’s,”
So, dear mom and dad, from the depths of my heart:
Learned to say, “yes ma’am,” “thank you,” and “please.”
What YOU gave to ME, now to YOU I impart!
When I was sick and my fever so high,
When you’re feeling weak, I will help you to stand;
YOU never left me but stayed very close by!
If you’re frightened or lonely, I’ll hold on to your hand.
Whenever you spanked me, I thought I would die!
We won’t be walking alone, though dark be the night.
But how did MY getting spanked somehow cause YOU to cry?
Our SAVIOR is with us; in fact, HE is our Light!
Falling down, getting up with you holding my hand;
And each act of kindness, each demonstration of love—
Our home built on the ROCK and NOT on the sand!
Though done with MY hands, comes from our Father above!

It’s no doubt that families today stay busier than ever, and unfortunately, sometimes the first thing that gets cut out of our schedule is time to build on our foundations. Despite our busyness, may we not forget that one of our foundational stones is prayer. We may think we can survive without prayer, but we sure can’t thrive without prayer. Not sure how to have an effective prayer life? Have a prayer plan, like using the Lord’s Prayer as an outline. Next, we see we are to keep ourselves in God’s love. Honestly, I think that means we stay connected to the Vine (John 15). We need to be in the Bible, whether by reading or listening to it, and let the Word

Maybe we forget about all the wonderful things He’s done for us and we lose faith that He will come through again. What would happen if we changed our attitude when we were going through a test or trial? I was reading through Psalm 42 recently. I encourage you to read it when you can, especially if you’re going through a difficult time. Something that really caught my eye was in verses 5 and 11. David said the same exact thing. This is what he says: “Why are you

Baked Thyme Potatoes by Deana Thompson
S
eptember is a time when school is in full swing and football games are about to begin. It is a time to pull out our jackets from the closets and watch the leaves begin to change from
green to gold. It is a time for harvesting produce, like potatoes, from the garden and preparing the soil for the cold of winter. We know the times and seasons for harvesting produce, but do we know the times and seasons for harvesting the people in our lives for God’s kingdom? Jesus said in John 4:35-36, “Do you not say,
‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! And he who reaps receives wages and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.” Be alert to the nudge of the Holy Spirit, and always be ready to reap a harvest for God, for you do not know whom God may bring across your path today.
Ingredients • 4 large baking potatoes
• ¼ c. unsalted butter, melted • ¼ c. olive oil
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• ½ tsp. freshly ground salt
• 1½ tsp. fresh thyme leaves, minced
42 // September 2019
Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 400ºF. 2. Cut unpared potatoes into ¼-inch slices. Overlap the slices in a 9x13 baking dish. 3. In a small bowl, combine the butter and oil. Brush this mixture on the potato slices, and pour any remaining mixture over the potatoes. 4. Sprinkle the potatoes with the garlic, salt, and thyme. 5. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until potatoes are done and browned on the edges. Variation: Substitute rosemary for the thyme. Tip: If you wish to prepare the potatoes ahead of time, slice and place them in cold water until you are ready to bake them. Then, drain them very well, blot them dry, and proceed with the recipe.
