Sean Taaffe Group wins National Salon of the Year The Sean Taaffe Hair and Beauty Group recently took the award for National Salon of the Year at the prestigious Schwarzkopf Irish Hairdressing Business Awards in Dublin. Nigel Kenny Receives Matrix Artistic Recognition Kilkenny business owner, Nigel Kenny of Hair by Nigel & Co recently received a major industry award in Budapest at a lavish gala attended by hundreds of hair professionals from all over the world. The annual event acknowledges excellence in the profession by some of the best in the industry, and little did Nigel know that he would be receiving one of the top awards of the evening – the Matrix Artistic Recognition Award for outstanding contribution to education and commitment, recognised for writing his own seminars and directing them in the UK and Ireland. Speaking on his award Nigel said, “I am delighted and honoured to have been recognised at this level. I love what I do and very seldom look back. I am addicted to progress and believe with hard work and the right voices in your ear, you can achieve whatever it is you want. It’s only March and it’s been a fantastic year already.”

Sharni White of Soul Urban Style in Retford has been reaping the rewards for all her hard work, winning award nominations, finalist positions, training courses and industry recognition. Most recently Sharni was nominated in Coloursoft’s The ONE Awards, where she was a finalist alongside ten other salons from around the UK. Although she didn’t win this time round, Sharni did take the top spot in the ‘Media Award’, and walked away with a signed, personalised book on the life of Toni Mascolo, cofounder of the Toni & Guy group.

Celebrations All Round at Ritzy’s 2015 is off to a great start for Tullamore based salon, Ritzy’s Hairdressing, who recently picked up three awards at the Schwarzkopf Irish Hairdressing Business Awards and have celebrated their 30th year in business. At the Royal Dublin Society, Ritzy’s walked away with not one or two, but three awards at the Schwarzkopf Irish Hairdressing Business Awards – taking the crown as ‘Retail Salon of the Year’, ‘Leinster Salon of the Year’ and runner-up for ‘Overall Salon of the Year’. Shortly after their hat trick of award wins, Ritzy’s celebrated its 30th birthday. Do start planning your hair, not just the style, but the cut, condition and colour Any hairdresser will tell you to start thinking about how you want to feel on your wedding day at least six months before. You may have a colour in mind that takes a few steps to achieve, and you definitely want your hair in great condition. Getting regular trims and investing in good hair products will help your hair get in tiptop condition. Book these in advance so you get the dates you want and to stay on plan.
Do keep an open mind - what you think you love, you may hate! While you might think you want a certain style for your hair, you might go the complete opposite! Then there are styles that just don’t work with your hair; you might need to get extensions to achieve the look. I always recommend waiting until you have your dress before you start thinking about the styling. And make sure you feel like YOU! You want to walk down the aisle feeling beautiful and comfortable, and looking like the best version of you!

Do have a trial Trials are the time to brainstorm, share ideas and play. They can also be the time to get to know your hairdresser and see if they are the right person to style your hair on your wedding day. A test run means both you and your stylist know exactly what’s happening on the morning of the wedding, meaning you can relax and enjoy the excitement while your stylist does what they do best. Bring any accessories or pieces with you to try, and have an idea of what you want your bridesmaids to look like.
Don’t ignore your stylist’s advice Your stylist has your best interest at heart. They will take into account your face shape, colouring and dress style when they
Don’t have a haircut or colour the day before! Its best to have your cut and colour done the week before your wedding day. That way it will still be fresh, but it will also have a few days to make it feel more ‘you’. Plus, should there be any colour disasters, you have time to correct it!
Don’t neglect your diet!
Diet plays a huge part for hair and skin. Lots of vitamins and good omega oils keep your hair in good condition. Eating less fresh foods such as takeaways, or even crash dieting in advance of the big day, will have your hair and skin looking dull, dry and tired.
My best piece of advice Choose your hairdresser wisely for styling your wedding hair. You want to feel calm and happy on the wedding day, not stressed and worried. Building a relationship with your stylist will allow you to focus on enjoying the getting ready part. If you don’t ‘click’ with them, it could be a very awkward few hours!
Wedding trends This year we have seen a lot of ‘Mermaid Hair’. Long, loose, beachy waves look amazing on most brides and offer a natural feel. Colours that go with this are soft and natural and have a ‘lived in’ feel - think soft balayage. Plaits are also a big thing this year. The Rise of the Non-Invasive
M
arketing analyst Mintel recently carried out a report into the rise and demand of non-invasive treatments and the fall of plastic surgery.
The most in demand advanced treatments are those performed on the body, with the stomach and waist the most common areas of concern for both male and female consumers (37%). In 2014 the number of liposuction procedures rose by 7%, however plastic surgery procedures as a whole were down, showing consumers are more cautious about going under the knife, or are opting for a more subtle and understated look. The demand for non-invasive treatments keeps on rising and with this in mind Belfast beauty salon, Roamer Holistic Health and Beauty Clinic talk us through their most popular noninvasive treatment - CACI.

CACI (Non-Surgical Facelift) As we grow older our facial muscles naturally start to lose tone and elasticity. Genetics, lifestyle, weight fluctuation and environmental factors can all influence the rate and degree to which our muscles will lose their tone. Homecare Routine Alongside such non-invasive salon treatments, a homecare routine is important, and it’s never too early (or too late) to start. A good skincare regimen is as important as brushing your teeth, keeping up good hygiene and maintaining a healthy diet! Key elements include cleansing, toning, exfoliating and moisturising. As we age our skin becomes drier and it is a sound recommendation for clients to switch from gel, foaming based cleansers to something a little creamier. Using less surfactant on the skin is a must, especially when dehydration is severe. Boosters, serums or complexes are a great addition to your regime. Concentrating on ones that help with hydration and sensitivity are a great start. Look for ingredients that bring moisture to the skin – humectants – such as hyaluronic acid, lavender, honey and cucumber. As a result of outdated information, toners have become a confusing category of skincare products. What we now know is that after cleansing, what your skin needs is a range of
ingredients that restore and repair its surface. Skin can never get too much of these important ingredients, which include antioxidants and skin repairing substances such as glycerin, fatty acids and ceramides. Masking is often a step missed in an at home routine. The effects of a masque can last for up to 72 hours, so it really is like giving yourself a treatment at home. Again, hydrating masques are the best for delivering hydration to the deeper layers of the skin. One of our personal favourites is Dermalogica’s MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque. All of these steps are important, but ultimately they won’t penetrate properly if you aren’t exfoliating the skin on a regular basis. “Since I came back to the UK in 2010, after years of working in the States, I have been saying that foil highlights are dying out. Foils are such an 80s look and certainly not something the modern woman wants. But, what we have to be clear about is that classic Balayage (by that I mean an application from root to tip) is a highlighting technique, so make this clear to clients. I prefer that bespoke feel you get from freehand colouring as opposed to the sea of perfectly placed foils that many women have opted for…until now. “For many women, highlights are too time consuming and colourists who spend 90 minutes doing a full head of foils are making colour a chore for their client. If a client asks for classic highlights, they’re asking for a look rather than a specific foil technique, they just might not know what the other options are – give her a more natural look that’s quicker for her and she’ll be loyal to you. “Convert clients by asking them to talk about any celebrity colours that they like the most, A-Listers tend to have Balayage alongside merged techniques, such as Ombre or Babylights. They look amazing as they work with the haircut and natural hair growth patterns, as well as the variance of tones in the hair making the whole look completely unique to that person.”
Of the new classes featuring his signature Balayage application, Jack says, “These classes are going to be small and intimate, with a maximum of eight people. The idea behind it is to dispel the myths and fears around freehand work, and by the end of the day participants will be able to perfect the classic Balayage application from root to tip. This class will allow the delegates to then take what they’ve learnt back to their salon and immediately make more money by offering another colour service.”

The Art of a great collection
Motivation Be clear about the purpose of the collection; whether commercial (promoting your salon or a new colour range to potential customers) or as an artistic project (building a portfolio). Commercial shoots must be wearable. Clients should be able to relate to the styles. No matter how beautiful, if the looks don’t translate to the salon, they won’t attract as many future clients. Once you know your motivation, don’t waiver from it – keep your message clear.
Schedule Decide when to release your images and schedule the shoot around that. Plan your calendar in advance and confirm all dates with the whole team (styling, photographic and models).
Inspiration Successful collections reflect upcoming trends, not current ideas. Collections can take up to six months from development to shooting and should showcase what’s relevant from their date of publication. If you don’t look ahead for your inspiration, a shoot can be quickly dated. This is especially important if you’re hoping for the images to be featured by industry publications.
Street-casting is an excellent way of appealing to clients by depicting real people and can help cut costs. It’s essential the models you choose are photogenic and have the right hair type. Carry out a test-shoot before confirming anyone. Street-cast models are also often more open to cutting and colouring ideas. Agency models may Decide when to be restricted to what they can have done. Involvement Building a collection takes time, patience and dedication. Select an Artistic Director but involve as many of your team as you can, making it clear they need to participate throughout. Create mood boards for hair, makeup, lighting and clothing, referring back to your theme to ensure continuity between team members and their looks.
Photographer Selection Ideally, choose a photographer you’ve worked with before so you know they’ll shoot the hair as you want it done. If you haven’t used a photographer before, research the work of different people to be sure they understand the nuances of photographing hair so that it remains the key focus. It’s important to meet with them regularly to decide lighting techniques and composition. Social media can be a great platform for making initial contact.

Model Selection
Location Pick wisely; studio time is often costly but more practical than onlocation. If you can use your salon, it’s a good way to keep costs down and have a functional base to work from. Wherever you choose, don’t overcomplicate the location, set design or props because it can detract from the hair. Artistic shoots can be more intricate, but should still be clearly themed and compliment the overall look, keeping focus on the hair.
Consolidation With the models and photographer booked, focus on the detail. Research make-up ideas to select the right make-up artist for the look you want, maintaining continuity across the collection. A stylist is a big advantage if you can afford one; clothing can make or break the final image. To cut costs, consider contacting graduate designers, giving them the opportunity to showcase their work. As the looks develop and are finalised, keep referring back to the original plan to make sure everyone’s still on the same page.
Repetition Practise the looks more than once leading up to the shoot. The final looks are often quite different to what was initially visualised, so keep a photographic record of the trial runs to maintain continuity and help you make any last minute changes. Being well-rehearsed will save money, time and stress at the shoot.
Celebration Be proud of your collection. Encourage your team to show their images to clients and display them in-salon and use them for advertising. If you’re considering sending them for industry publication, check the terms and conditions because they usually ask for initial exclusivity. It can delay you sharing them on your own social media but it is great promotion. And be proud – celebrate the success of your shoot and teamwork with a group meal or other reward.

When the big day arrives, gather your team and run through your checklist and schedule. Support them throughout. Providing refreshments is essential; shoots can last all day and long hours with no provision for breaks or refreshment can lead to a tired and stressed team, which will reflect in the final quality. Take as many images as you can of each look so there’s a greater choice in the editing process.

I
t’s that season again! That’s right, festival season is upon us once more and the only thing the Pall Mall Barbers like more than cutting hair is listening to great music. We at Pall Mall Barbers have been known to go to quite a few gigs and festivals in our time, and so this is our guide to looking great during a festival.
It is important for a Pall Mall Gentleman to look great in all scenarios (you never know who could be checking you out). Refresh and Cleanse Rub a small amount of talc in a circular motion on the hair, gathering the product up into a small ball. This is also a great way of getting oil based products out of the hair. Start with a small amount though, the last thing you want to do is look like a festival going ghost.
Always Wear Protection (on your beard) Gentlemen with beards are prone to getting lucky at festivals, so make sure that you are protected with Pall Mall Barbers Beard Oil. Use Soft, Non-Setting Products Use a lighter product that does not leave a residue, such as Pall Mall Barbers Pliable Clay or Light Dressing Cream. Why? But the main reason is that you can shake out a light product and style again in the morning, this gives you a massive advantage in looking fresher than the other guys there.
Wet Wipes and Moisturiser A quick once over with non-scented wet wipes will keep you fresh as a daisy, but lads it is so important to moisturise if you’re out in the elements all day. Try using our Post-Shave Balm, it is a double duty moisturiser and skin protector, so not only will your skin be moisturised it will be protected from the sun’s harmful rays.
Smell Good & Get the Girls Different fragrances have different lasting factors. Freshen Up Our last bit of advice would be to visit the barbershop as close to your festival visit as possible. A good barber will give you a shave closer than what you will get at home with minimum irritation. Therefore your shave will last longer keeping you looking sharp throughout the entire festival. With regard to your haircut there are no mirrors or hairdryers in a field, so ensure that you have a style that is easy to style and wear. It may be time for a restyle sir.
