letter from the editor This October, The G.O.O.D.S Magazine is proud to participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will DEVELOP breast cancer at some point during THEIR life. After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common TYPE of cancer in women. The good news is that many women can survive breast cancer if it’s DISCOVERED and treated early.

Halloween is such a fun time of year, no wonder it’s growing by leaps and bounds. To have your share of fun while not investing a fortune on costumes and props, think resale! Consignment, resale, and thrift shops collect costumes and things that could make great costumes all year, so don’t go buy some flimsy outfit made in some sweat shop somewhere. Think PREcycling: don’t add to the waste stream with another mass-produced cheap costume for your child or yourself. Think creatively: think recycled. FWSD is upon us and we’re very excited to be involved once again this year. We’ve sat down with Fashion Week San Diego’s Director Allison Andrews for the inside scoop. Allison is doing a phenomenal job and I would like to thank her for all she’s done for The G.O.O.D.S Magazine. I would also like to acknowledge the instructors and students at Bellus Academy for all the hard work they’ve done on hair makeup for FWSD. It’s always a pleasure working with them. Special shout-out to Latera and Kristina for doing a GOODS job on KUSI San Diego news segment. I truly hope you enjoy the October issue. Big things are coming in the future of The G.O.O.D.S Magazine. Make sure you download our NEW IPHONE APP in the iTunes APP Store. Our staff has been working extremely hard to source a more economical option for our readers to access our publication and with the new app we have drastically reduced the cost for you—enjoy!

The GOODS Celebrity Fashion Column By Kimberly Kimmel

Ah, fall is in the air. Time for new school supplies, getting ready for the holidays and shopping for the new fall trends. While the classics are always in style, it is fun to experiment with new colors, fabrics, textures and a new fall look.

Who’s Out and About Miley is no longer engaged. Engaged in new activities with Liam Hemsworth is Eiza Gonzalez. The 23-year old was seen coming out of his L.A. house as well as his SUV. Victoria’s Secret awarded Nina Dobrev of The Vampire Diaries fame with a ‘Sexiest Style’ honor. Also winning was Rihanna for Sexiest Bikini Body and for Sexiest Sporty Style was Ashley Green. Jennifer Lawrence has gone sans make up in the latest Christian Dior ads. She looks sensational and so down to earth freshly scrubbed.

Upcoming Trends Emerald green is the new color for fall. Pair it with other gem like colors (like amethyst and garnet). Hats were also abundant on the New York runways. Fedoras, baseball caps, beanies, floppy knits- anything that looked cool and matched the ensemble. Outerwear is also the rage. Leather jackets, over size parkas, coats and wraps in any length, color and texture. The bolder, the better. Layering is also big this season. A sheer dress over leather slacks is a hot look. Or put a cashmere sweater over any tailored shirt or blouse.

Cool Places to Shop Forever 21 has all of the latest trends and fashions. They have numerous locations around the country as well as an online store. You can go online and view their blog for all the latest fashion information. They specialize in clothes of all kinds, like sweaters, hoodies, cardigans, knits, jackets, coats, dresses, tops, tees, skirts, shorts, tights, socks, shoes, clutches as well as other accessories and best of all- reasonable prices.

Our Fave Product of the Month Finding new hair care products is always fun. One of the good new ones is Nexxus Anti-Aging HairCare Line. They’ve come out with a new shampoo, conditioner, dry shampoo and their Nexxus Youth Renewal Rejuvenating Elixir, which is a lightweight leave-in treatment. They say their line helps slow down the aging process. Healthy hair is always a youthful look. We say great looking hair has always been timeless.

What’s In, What’s Out Big bulky bags are on their way out. More demure purses are in. Pointedtoed shoes are in. Boots and sky-high heels continue to rule the shoe kingdom. Floral prints are out, and classic prints are in. Leopard prints are still in and any type of print skirt or dress is really in. The prints don’t even have to match so mix it up! www.thegoodsmag.co

What’s GOODS in Pop Culture? By Mariah Honey

Beyonce & Jay-Z Named Forbes Highest Earning Celebrity Couple Whoever didn’t see this one coming is seriously misguided. Beyonce and Jay-Z unsurprisingly topped the Forbes list of highest earning celebrity couples for the second year in a row; the two are not only famous for their music but also for their business savvy.

Scott Eastwood Is The Hottest Thing Since Slice Bread He’s drawing gasps and drools from all over the Web. In other words, he’s making everyone’s day. Clint Eastwood’s son, Scott, is featured in the October issue of Town & Country and his hunkiness is getting noticed. So is his down-to-earth attitude. Since 2003, according to the magazine, Scott, 27, has been working construction, bartending and valet parking cars while waiting to make it as an actor.

Fifty Shades of Grey Stars Cast Two of the most sought-after roles in Hollywood have been filled. Dakota Johnson will star as Anastasia Steele and Charlie Hunnam as Christian Grey in the highly anticipated film adaptation of the erotically charged novel Fifty Shades of Grey.

Lady Gaga & Miley Cyrus at VMAs Lady Gaga has taken the MTV Video Music Awards stage covered in (fake) blood; wearing a dress made of meat and as her male alter-ego, Jo Calderone. But at the 2013 MTV VMAs, Miley Cyrus stole Gaga’s outrageous performance crown. While Gaga came equipped with multiple costume- and wig-changes on her side, Cyrus took over the stage with gigantic, dancing bears and more twerking than viewers at home probably knew what to do with.

Miss America crowns 1st winner of Indian descent She’s the second consecutive New York beauty queen to take the Miss America title, but she’s the first Indian-American to wear the national crown atop her perfectly coiffed head. “I was the first Indian Miss New York, and I’m so proud to be the first Indian Miss America,” Nina Davuluri said after she won. Davuluri’s resume goes considerably deeper than her heritage, however. The 24-year-old Fayetteville, New York, native was on the dean’s list and earned the Michigan Merit Award and National Honor Society nods while studying at the University of Michigan, where she graduated with a degree in brain behavior and cognitive science.

Britney Spears takes up residency in Las Vegas Britney Spears is about to hit the Strip. The singer has announced that she will do a two-year residency at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas with a show titled “Britney: Piece of Me.” According to the resort’s website, the show will be “a celebration of one of the most illustrious careers in music history, featuring 20 worldwide smashes from one of the most iconic artists ever to grace the stage. Audiences of all ages will be thrilled as Britney re-imagines her greatest past performances and offers a glimpse of brand new material from her highly-anticipated eighth studio album.”

Michael Jackson’s Court Battle Jurors in the Michael Jackson wrongful death trial have one less question to decide after the judge issued a partial directed verdict in favor of Jackson’s mother. Katherine Jackson has standing to seek damages against concert promoter AEG Live in the pop icon’s death because evidence proved her son provided for “everything,” including her household expenses and food, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos said in a ruling. Lawyers for AEG Live unsuccessfully argued that Jackson’s elderly mother could not sue because she was also supported by daughter Janet Jackson.

Fashion & Beauty Spotlight

Style Squad San Diego

By Solomon Osayande Jr.

Style and beauty do not always go hand-in-hand; however, one local business around San Diego is making sure that both terms are now synonymous with their top-notch servicing around San Diego and it’s surrounding community. If you’ve been looking for a way to enhance your style or look and are in need of some professional servicing, look no further, Style Squad San Diego and its team of beauty experts has you covered. Style Squad San Diego is the Swiss army knife of beautification services offering a wide range of style and beauty options for clients to explore while fulfilling their beauty needs. Boasting a large assortment of services from image creation and event/ production planning all the way to hair and waxing, Style Squad is capable of placing its enhancing touch on an individual or entire bridal party by taking the client’s vision and creating a look that mirrors the their style request. Not only will Style Squad use the collective expertise from it’s team members to help transform your beauty ideas and turn them into reality, but they can also deliver their quality services right to your doorstep, production studio, or boutique (yes they are really this accommodating). In order to get a better idea of the “squad” behind this service and all of its beautifying components, I spoke with Creative Director Llewelyn Labio to get the GOODS on Style Squad while diving a little deeper into their well of beautification and styling services.

The G.O.O.D.S. Magazine: Before we dive in to your company Style Squad, can you tell me a little about how you got your start in the world of beautification servicing? Style Squad: Honestly, it wasn’t as glamorous as it should have been! We were all in one house with our kids screaming in the background while Gabi was dying my hair. Joanna comes through the bathroom door and shows us her thrift shopping outfit from her mom’s closet and says, “We should open a service where we style people…” Gabi’s eyes widened and said that was her dream. And I sat there in the chair without a word. It wasn’t until a week later when I called both of them back and said ‘Let’s do it!’ And here we are. TGM: I can see that your company is a one-stop shop for beauty needs, can you describe some of the services that Style Squad offers?

SS: We focus on fashion and editorial, which has since branched off into bridal and other individual and special events. Our squad consists of a creative director, events coordinator, and lead stylists; we have employees under that. I am the creative director who takes the vision of the designer, photographer, model, entrepreneur, bride, so forth and so on and piece it all together to manifest it into reality. Joanna is our events coordinator. She takes the vision that I have begun engaging in and starts making it happen. Gabi is the lead stylists. She creates the looks. We invent the image you see. We hire the best so that our client gets the best. From hair and makeup, to image creation and airbrush tan, from production directing to waxing. We make sure the overall production or event that every woman is part of look like it came out of a magazine or billboard ad.

TGM: Who is your “squad” and what are their specialties? SS: I think I answered this above. TGM: Yes you did. For someone that has your experience in the beauty industry working with an assortment of different clients from differing industries and giving them “style;” can you give me your definition of style? (deep, I know) :) SS: HA! That is not a one-sentence answer. What works for me and on me does not work for the next person. We are all so very different. Style is also confidence. If you are comfortable and feel good, you will look good. It is not about what the latest trend is. It is about taking those new trends and making them your own. Truth is, red lipstick doesn’t look good on everyone. Neither do skinny jeans. You must first accept who you are. Face the mirror. Then, call us… we will do the rest!

TGM: Why should someone use Style Squad? SS: No Sol. The question is, “Why shouldn’t you?” HEE HEE TGM: Touché. What is your favorite part of the beautifying process? SS: Creative thought that goes into putting a look together. TGM: Who does your company service? What type of clients do you target? SS: Our company is really geared towards creating a total image of the look you are going for so that you not only see it, you feel it and making that image immortal through photography. We love the whole process.

patron to non-profits that encourage women empowerment and education so we try to make it all of those events as well. We have been able to do as much as 25 people in one sitting. (“Shame on you if your mind is in the gutter!”). TGM: (Picks up mind, cleans it off) Ok, were going to play a little word association. I say “Style Squad San Diego” you say… SS: …..Amazing! TGM: Lady Gaga, stylish or without style? SS: I guess it depends on what it is…. Lol! TGM: Any tips for people looking to get into the world of beautification services?

Our clients are fashion and accessory designers, photographers and models, brides and any woman wanting to look SS: Practice. We are always looking fabulous! for talent and love up-and-coming stylists. TGM: Do you have any “dream” clients that you would like to work TGM: Where can people go to check with? out your company online? SS: Not really. I feel if I have a dream client in front of me, they might end up being a little divaish and demanding. Better not jinx myself and leave this question alone. TGM: Is there a waiting list for any of your services? How many people can your squad service at once (shame on you if your mind is in the gutter)?

SS: www.StyleSquadSD.com, Facebook – MyStyleSquad twitter, and Instagram – StyleSquadSD TGM: If you could give the readers of the GOODS magazine three beauty tips what would they be?

SS: 1) Take a makeup class twice a year. It’s not that expensive and you will learn insider tips. You can find SS: Yes, we get booked pretty them everywhere. 2) Get a trim every fast. From tradeshows to events to 8 weeks for your hair…. Its amazing fashion shows and modeling shoots how this little task can make you look and designer looks; couple that with clean vs. messy. 3) Keep your toes and weddings and misc. We are crazy! We nails clean, trimmed, filed, buffed, also pride ourselves on being an active and polished. Nothing is worse than a

pretty face with chipped nails and toe jam. Think about it! Pretty simple and affordable tips to beauty, if you can’t do these, it just means you’re lazy! It’s basic hygiene! TGM: Thank you for your time Llewelyn, before I let you go back to beautifying people with some of the MANY services you offer, is there anything that you would like the readers to look out for? (events, shows, etc etc). SS: Well we just finished up Fashion Week San Diego as you know and have been very busy, that being said, we will have several events and things that people should look out for over the coming months, readers can stay updated on everything Style Squad by visiting our website stylesquadsd.com and our facebook page facebook.com/ MyStyleSquad. We have a TON of exciting updates to come! ❉

Stacey Blanchet

By Adriana Oancea

An Interview with the Fashion Designer at Blanchet Designs, Writer and Executive Producer

I’ve admired Stacey Blanchet for a while now and I find all her work to be simply amazing, from the book she wrote to the fashion that she created. It seems like this artist has more than an amazing mind and magical hands. There is even more to her and you are about to find out. We know that you are a Fashion Designer, Author and Film Producer and understand that you just got picked up by a management firm for public speaking. Out of all these different tasks that you do, which one is your favorite and why? That is a very hard question to ask me. I am not the kind of person who likes to have only one thing in my life. I like to create something out of nothing so all are very special to me for different reasons. But, the best reason of all are the wonderful people who have come into my life over the past year and whom I consider to be very good professional and personal friends. Your clothing line was taken from fashion shows to the Primetime Emmys (2012) Oscars (2013) and Grammys (2013). Are there any goals that you would like to achieve by the end of this year? My only goal this year in terms of fashion designing is to finish two collections and have them sell at a boutique in Paris. We are on our way and then I will decide what the future holds for Blanchet Designs depending upon how well we do in the market place. Have you worked with any celebrities or plan on it in the future? PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARLOS TEIXEIRA

It is not in our plans. We did the red carpet season and have no plans of yet to participate in the coming season but we have been asked so we shall see. I don’t want anything to take my focus off of the boutique in Paris. That is very important to me. www.thegoodsmag.co

21

fashion How does it all work before the clothing gets out for sale and in other words, what is the science behind opening your own clothing line? You can either be a custom designer and do designs for the individual when needed or, you can be the designer who goes into production and tries to get your clothing into the stores. It takes lots and lots of money or investors. Investors won’t invest unless you have capital and you can’t get capital unless you have sold. It is a hard, hard career to get into. If you decide to go into production you can either use the production houses in the United States or internationally. They are both equally hard and filled with challenges. That is such a loaded question that I tell all designers that are starting out, if you do not understand how a business works you won’t make it. This is a business first and foremost and you will make a lot of costly mistakes that can bury you. It is hard to know unless you know the individual and their creations. It all comes back to knowing your clients and what market you want to get into. One of the biggest mistakes a young designer makes is getting investors and not realizing that they sold their name along with taking the money. Talk with all types of designers and you will see this mistake plays out all over the place in every country. It doesn’t matter. No investor will invest their money without the name. Is there a smart way to make money or save money with being a designer? The best answer I can give to this question is; know your market. YOU MUST know who you are selling your clothing to and what they will pay for clothing. If you don’t, you will lose a lot of money very quickly. Your designs won our Début’s cover and especially our hearts. Tell us a little bit about shooting this spread. In terms of shooting the spread, I turned it over to the professionals. Everyone on the team knew I wanted to see Paris in the photos and that was their only requirement. When I put this together, I had to let a lot of the control go as I would not be able to be there. So I put my trust in the team to do the best job they could and I believe they did with all that I gave them to work with. They are an awesome group of people and I plan on using them always for my shoots if I can. It is important when you put your trust in people you pick the right ones. I did!

How was it to shoot with such a big team coming from different countries? This team was just simply amazing. There were several people who really stepped up to make this happen. Murielle picked up the clothing two weeks in advance and allowed all the shipments to come to her home and even offered to pick up the photographer from the airport. She lives 45 minutes outside of Paris. She was really my rock during this challenge as she spoke very little English but totally looked out for me in a way she didn’t have to. Carlos, coming from Portugal with his assistant Diogo was the best part of the shoot as he totally understood what I wanted. He does not speak English that well either, so we communicated through translations and photos. He mapped out ahead of time where he wanted to shoot and we all followed suit. Petra, the model on the second day, got a car so she could drive the entire team all around Paris to get those Iconic shots. She kept my clothes for me and we have put together another shoot in Paris for the 17th of July in the city of Paris again. Sophie sent me pictures of her make-up ideas so we were all prepared on what we wanted to accomplish for this two day shoot. Laura shot the first day and Petra shot the second day. Allard provided all the shoes from

Holland and worked very hard to get them to Paris in time for the shoot. It is my feeling that the shoes really made the shoot so much better than it could have been. All in all it was very challenging and many, many, many long hours of planning almost a month to be exact. But, I felt worth it for Blanchet Designs.

would waive a percentage of their fees for selling my clothing provided that I could put the pictures in Magazines. I always honor my word and commitments to people. They are getting everything they asked for and then some. Everyone from the team, boutiques and staff at Blanchet Designs, is pleased with all the attention. How do you get your Design inspiration and is there something in particular that inspires you? I do not get inspired by a specific element but I love being in fabric stores. That is what inspires me to create. I get all my ideas when I look at fabric that is available and on-line. Understanding fabric lets you decide what you can do with it. I am a very structured person so my designs really reflect that. I like making statement pieces and doing something classic with a little bit of an edge. Your successful book titled ‘Romantic Encounters’ sold over 300 copies in only 1 year on Amazon. Would you mind telling us a little about it?

Why did you choose to shoot this spread in Paris? Is there something more behind shooting in Paris? I made a deal with the boutiques in Paris, as per their requirement, if we shot my collection in Paris, they

This book was originally written back in my late 20’s before the internet had eBooks. I was approached by a publisher for a company called ENOVEL.com and he asked that I take my original book which had hand sketches in it and create a CD and allow him to upload to his site www.thegoodsmag.co

23

MY LIFE DID NOT TURN OUT IN ANY WAY THE WAY I THOUGHT IT WOULD WHEN I STARTED DOWN THIS ROAD TWO YEARS AGO. SO I HAVE COMPLETELY THROWN OUT MY ROAD MAP AND NOW I JUST GO FOR IT. BEST THING I HAVE EVER DONE.

and it sold for $5.00. My father helped me edit and we sold in two years about 300 copies. I put it in the back of my closet for about 10 years and then took it out and hired an illustrator about two years ago to update the book. This book is 15 ideas of how to bring romance back into your relationship. I am a time person. I believe that to many of us don’t give of our time and really miss out on lasting, healthy, romantic and meaningful relationships. So many are living their lives on social media for a show instead of with the person they are with. It is a bad game to play as you will never be fulfilled if you rely on masses to make you happy. It has to first start with you and a connection with your partner. That all comes down to one word: ‘TIME’. When I wrote this book it was personal as it had to do with a relationship that I was in during my early 20’s that was very important to me.

What is the story behind the “3Moms and a Napkin”, the documentary that you and Victor Master created and do you plan on producing any other projects in the future? I started ‘Augmented Reality’ with a friend of mine named ‘Manoj Sharma’ whom I did the 48 Hour Film Project with in San Diego, May of 2012 with our friend Jonathan Medal. We thought wouldn’t it be fun to make films? Not having a clue and really still don’t on how to make a film. The first film out was my documentary ‘The Journey to Myself’ and then we entered a contest called the “Focus Forward’ contest that was opened to the world to find something that was inspirational, innovative and that could change the world. A very tall order and we had 2 minutes and 50 seconds to tell our story. I put the team together and we focused in on these three incredible woman who started a film festival here in San Diego, called ‘The Young Leader Film Festival, http://www. youngleadersfilmfestival.com/ in which they went to the Sundance Film Festival and brought back with them documentaries that were for the younger generation of 13-18 year olds to create leaders out of them and show them what is happening all around the world. When it came time for the festival, it was turned over to the children to run, question and manage the entire production. It is the only one of its kind in the world. We felt it was a great subject. However, we did not make it into the contest and now Victor Masters is entering it into the 2013/2014 film festival circuit. We shall see how it goes for us. After doing two movies and participating in every aspect except directing, I can tell you that I have no desire to do it again. But, that could change given the people and circumstances that present themselves to my life. I keep myself open but I am not looking for it. For those whom have not watched the documentary of your life, called ‘The Journey To Myself’ (which was released in July 2012 and won the ‘Award of Merit’ for the Indie Film Festival, of La Jolla, California, and an ‘Official

Selection’ of the Cine Fest of Las Vegas), is there a specific scene that moved you and why?

We know that you are also a public speaker. If you were to give our reader an advice, what would it be?

This project started out so differently in terms of that it was supposed to be a behind the scenes movie about a designer just starting out and all that comes with it. When we finished shooting over an entire year, my friend Jonathan Medal, came to me and asked that we scrap the entire project and reshoot just me telling my life story. He felt that was a much better story. It took me 3 months to decide but because it was Jonathan, I did it. He is one of the nicest, warmest and caring people I have met in a long time. I totally trusted him. When we sat down to do the shooting, I took my glasses off and could not see my notes, so I spoke for three hours straight about my life. During that time, I found myself talking about a situation that occurred when my parents were splitting up and me watching the movers take my bedroom furniture out of the house with my ear phones on. My father came and sat with me and we both just cried at the end of our family. I never spoke of that day because it was such a painful memory and the song that played still triggers sadness in me to this day. It is Chicago’s ‘If you leave me now’. It was a very sad time for us all as my parents loved each other very much but could not make it work. I think it shaped my whole feeling on marriage and family. I have always chosen not to do either. Doing the documentary changed my life in terms of going back and reliving all of this and coming to terms with it and realizing how it all affected me as an adult. I can now look back with a big smile on my face even with the bad memories. My parents even can look at it and feel proud of me instead of sad about how it all turned out. Now that is progress and growing up.

I have been asked over the year to speak in public regarding all aspects of my professional life. People want to know how you do all of this. I tell them it is lots and lots of hard work. Sometimes 12 hour days and working every single day until you finish. Because of all my hard work, it has caught the attention of a worldwide promoter so we shall see where he takes me. But, I would offer several pieces of advice to the reader. Nothing is easy. There really is not an easy formula for getting what you want out of life except working very hard for it. If you are not a worker, you can’t be self-employed. That is what all of these projects are. They are me relying on me to get it all done with the help of a team that I direct. You must be a leader and a little bit of a loaner. You must always think and treat this as a business and make decisions based upon what is good for your business. This is not a big party for everyone to have a fun time on your dime. When you get that that is when it gets really hard. Last and most important is not to be afraid to fail. I have a very different take on failing as I have had to rise higher than I thought I could when things did not go my way. How you handle the chips when they are down will be a big indicator on the type of life you will have. If you go for it and take whatever comes, you may just be surprised. I like being surprised. My life did not turn out in any way the way I thought it would when I started down this road two years ago. So I have completely thrown out my road map and now I just go for it. Best `thing I have ever done. JUST PLAIN GO FOR IT! Stacey Blanchet is a vivid designer within our industry that so many people follow and admire. We’re honored to have interviewed such an artist and are excited to keep following her exciting journey. ❉

Kenneth Barlis Fashion Show 2013

By Stephanie Phonvongsa

On August 30th, Kenneth Barlis hosted his firstever annual fashion show, debuting Spring and Summer 2014 collections at the prominent Port Pavillion Pier in San Diego. The hangar-style setting of the Port Pavillion was well-suited for this event—captivating fashion show attendees with its romanticized “around the world” theme. First off, Kenneth Barlis’ RTW S/S 2014 collection was filled with bright colors (i.e. mint, red, blue, orange) and prints (i.e. tribal, tropical, floral, animal). Ladies rocked the runway with casual, sheer, and flowy tanks with high-waisted bright-colored shorts and animal print short bodycon skirts. Light and fitted bold printed capri trousers with pockets are a definite must-have for the spring and summer seasons. For the guys, we saw tanks styled with bright colors and geometric patterns and paired with animal print capri trousers with pockets. Camille Wood’s “Tribal” collection took the global theme up a notch with notable influences

from Africa. Bikinis and monokinis were either bright colored (i.e. lime, red) or animal print (i.e. giraffe). Models were adorned with egyptianstyle headwear and drop dead gorgeous metallic, pleated, sheer wings. Swimsuit cover ups were black, flowy, and sheer. Dresses exuded an egyptian goddess feel with form-fitting nylon styles in gold or silver. Next, Alan Huang’s “jizhu” collection, “jizhu” meaning spine, focused on structure and draping. His collection opened with beautiful mermaidstyle or trumpet wedding dresses. Dresses were delicate and detailed with tulle trains and embellishments. Other dress styles featured a red, black, and white theme, sometimes with a combination of the three colors or half black half red (similar to the half black half white trend). Dresses were styled with beautiful asymmetrical cuts around the midriff and back. A popular motif was a black leather asymmetrical cut crop top paired with a dramatic, long, flowing, sheer skirt.

Kenneth Barlis Fashion Show 2013 (KBFS 2013) kept fashion enthusiasts at the edge of their seats and cameras ready with anticipation with an eclectic program: KENNETH BARLIS READY TO WEAR S/S 2014 CAMILLE WOOD “TRIBAL” S/S 2014 ALAN HUANG “JIZHU” S/S 2014 JESSICA FAULKNER “BEYOND THE OASIS” S/S 2014 LOVE IS A DEVIL “ISLAND HOPPING” S/S 2014 KENNETH BARLIS “EEA” COUTURE S/S 2014

Jessica Faulkner, a former snowboarder, created the “Beyond the Oasis” collection for the powerful and savvy woman who knows what she wants. Her collection is characterized with loose elegance and comfort and feminine with an edge. Models worked the runway with chain mask jewelry and tropical print rompers and loose-fitting dresses. Styles were simple: bright colored and striped maxi dresses, off the shoulder tropical print shirts, loose capris, black leather shorts, and pleated pale skirts. The trend here was pairing detailed and feminine pieces with straightforward and edgy for a powerful, yet feminine feel. Love Is A Devil’s “Island Hopping” collection showcased tribal-inspired jewelry (i.e. tribal print, natural

colored stones, spikes, geometric shapes, military,-inspired). Necklaces were multi-colored and multi-layered. Simple necklaces were taken to the next level with an additional long necklace added for extra dimension and texture. Statement necklaces, like these, are sure to be an ongoing trend. The night finished with Kenneth Barlis’ “Eea” Couture collection, where “Eea” means eternal love, was inspired by a fairy tale of a dead bride with an undying love for her husband. Typically shows end with the bride, but Kenneth Barlis wanted to start with the bride and take guests “backwards in time” to the bride’s teen years. Wedding dresses were styled with a ball gown and long train with intricate button details on the

spine of the dress. Men wore dark blue and purple watercolor styled blazers with casual natural-colored pants and boots. The audience was in awe for Barlis’ sheer lace fitted long sleeve wedding dress—it exuded elegance, sexy, and beautiful all in one. Other gowns were styled with butterflies, flowers, feather trains, tulle skirts, layered panels, gold and metallic colors, and midriff and back baring cuts. Overall, KBFS 2013 was absolutely sublime—entertaining and captivating from start to finish. San Diego has a very talented and emerging fashion community and I expect that this is not the last we will hear of these inspiring designers.

BEHIND THE SCENES | FWSD 2013

Director of Fashion Week SD By Alejandrina Aragon

Another fall another fashion week, the one week a year every fashion lover looks forward to, but not everyone has the opportunity to experience both in person and locally. Now thanks to Allison Andrews, creator of San Diego Fashion Week making fashion history, us locals are able to enjoy another amazing Fashion Week right in the beautiful and versatile city we call home, San Diego. I recently got the opportunity to interview the amazing woman behind FWSD who has turned her passion for fashion into success. She shared that her idea to bring Fashion Week to San Diego came from a point of exhaustion so to speak with her standing within her career. Having started out in the industry as a successful fashion/business consultant 8 years ago with a small mom and pop type firm that she is still successfully running. She noticed a trend growing within her career that couldn’t be ignored. So she decided since she loved the industry she has long been a part of and had the desire for personal and career growth, she wanted to be able to work in the city that she is so deeply rooted in. With San Diego not only being the place she calls home but the city she met her husband in and the place she would like to raise her children. With that in mind, including a great passion for her industry, a lot of drive and determination she created FWSD. Where she could live, work and love her work in her city without feeling the pressure to leave. Why not do exactly what she would do in New York or any

of the other recognized fashion capitals in the city she calls home. She shared that although it may sound silly and a bit egotistical she has always known that she was supposed to do something like this. For those who attended the 2012 FWSD and loved it your probably thinking, its here again and finally official! We have a trademarked fashion week recognized by the city of San Diego. 5 nights of fashion and entertainment that should not be missed. Including exciting performances during intermissions, great clothing lines, special guest speakers, trunk shows, VIP swag bags and much more. For those of you are attending for the first time I bet your glad you did as this has ending up turning into the fashion event of the season thanks to the creator of this event making her mark official this year. It seems appropriate having received the most media impressions and cover stories coming in second to Comic Con last year and I know we at The G.O.O.D.S are glad FWSD is here to stay. Since the event oversold with last years Fashion week, the location this year is all the bigger and better with FWSD taking over the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier in Downtown San Diego. With a 5 day event including 3 days of runway shows featuring 26

different designers, both local and international in region, as this is a national and international fashion event. As Allison mentioned FWSD is the geographical location and not just about San Diego. FWSD is a platform for all talented emerging designers. One thing that Allison mentioned is that although FWSD is a traditional fashion week, the thing that separates it from the rest is the fact that it is an industry event open to the general public, which is not typical as most official fashion weeks are industry specific and only open to industry members. This is due to a belief in the new wave of consumerism and business, which brings much needed balance between buyers and consumers. This proves beneficial since the buyers aren’t the only ones setting trends as consumers now have equal say. The 2013 FWSD starts on Wednesday September 30, 2013 and will begin with a high emphasis on the presence and importance of the art and beauty behind fashion. Which Allison explained is so important because you can’t have fashion without beauty. She shared that there is such

a huge and talented beauty community influence locally and that goes hand in hand with fashion in San Diego, which has gone unrecognized for way too long. The first night will be kicked off by event host and T.V Personality Jeff Krapf and will include 4 local & global beauty industry experts and guest speakers with the Goods on the ins and outs of the beauty industry. Beauty industry experts include Jan Nordstrom Arnold of CND Nails, Claudio Lazo of Wella, Kevin James Bennett of MUD and Marylle Koken of Sebastian International. Also included in the starting night, a talented panel of experts discussing beauty and fashion hand and hand. Panelists include Leilani Angel of Bellus Academy, Travis Parker, Brian Hawkins of FIDM and StyleSeek, Dean Hall of HALL & SAKS and Sheree Vihon Bergthold of TRE Boutique.

Thursday night is the first official night of Runway shows featuring 7 of the 26 emerging designers showcasing their Spring/Summer 2014 Collections including C Venti, CG by Cynthia, Collections of Kathryn Elizabeth, Isabel Vianey, Laced with B, Mahogany Blues and Second Star Designs. Highlights of the night include a collaborative show featuring designers Andre Soriano, Cecilia Aragon, and Dexter Simmons from the new fashion series competition on the style network executively produced by Rihanna, “Styled to Rock.” Fallowed up by an amazing Friday night getting the Fashion weekend started off right! Friday will feature another amazing 8 of 25 designers including Diestra, Dos Caras Swimwear, Greenpacha, Keisha Audrey, ‘Love, Charles’, Maegan Stracy, Makeshift and RHCREATION. Also debuting there never before seen Spring/Summer

2014 Collections. Something to look forward too this evening especially for animal lovers, is the Doggie Fashion Show featuring the highly adorable and adoptable dogs from Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS). Always pays off to support a Goods cause! Saturday is the final night of Fashion Shows featuring the remaining designers debuting their 2014 Spring/ Summer Collections including A’doreus, Ashley Raymond, Danh Ta, Maralonzo, NOIA, SYC Collection, VICTROLA, Wishnow, WM Couture and Yuwei Designs. With a huge history making moment occurring when Interim Mayor and Council President Todd Gloria presents the official proclamation to SDFW Founder & Director, Allison Andrews. With performances and after party featuring the sounds of DJ Who and Paulo da Rosa of Sleeping Giant Music. Ending the fashion weekend off right on Sunday with what is sure to be a great trunk show with VIP swag bag giveaways and the announcement of The Winning Designer of The Business Package and Winning Top Models, whom we would like to congratulate you all for your creativity, hard work and dedication. This is sure to be a Goods 2013 FWSD and a Goods day for attendees to take fashions from the runway straight to their closets, couldn’t think of a better way to end another amazing fashion week. This 2013 FWSD is sure to be a success and an event you won’t want to miss! Top 10 Foods That Help Prevent Aging By Kimberly Kimmel

Let’s face it, we are all getting older. There is no fighting it. But, you can lessen the signs of aging by incorporating these healthy foods into your diet on a daily basis. The good news is that helping yourself not look older can be easy, inexpensive and really tasty. Avocado: Pegged as nature’s butter, they are loaded with monounsaturated fats, which are fabulous for healthier skin, as well as healthy arteries. Flexible arteries are a clear sign of youthfulness.

Tomatoes: Lycopene is abundant in tomatoes, which helps prevent cancers, lowers cholesterol as well as keeps your heart healthy. For the finest in anti-aging benefits serve cooked. Make a great spaghetti sauce and add fresh garlic for even more heart healthy benefits.

Eggs: This delightful food contains biotin and iron, which adds vitality and radiance to your skin and hair. Enjoy scrambled, poached, boiled or whip up an omelet. Your skin will thank you.

Romaine Lettuce: Your mother was right. Eat your greens! Rich in vitamin A, eating a salad daily will help promote new skin cells. Throw in cucumbers, raw sunflower seeds and tomatoes for a nourishing meal.

Sunflower Seeds: Sunflower seeds contain lignan phytoestrogens, which prevent collagen breakdown and boost the skin’s lipid barrier. The healthiest way to eat them is raw. Munch a bunch as an afternoon snack.

Carrots: Want to avoid glasses? Carrots are loaded with vitamin A which also promotes shiny, healthy hair.

Cucumbers: If you’ve had a facial where cucumbers were put on your eyes to reduce puffiness, you know the magic cucumbers can do. They also help reduce wrinkles. Enjoy the peel which has silica to boost the skin’s collagen.

Beans: Lima, navy, red, black or pinto, these babies are high in protein, which helps promote hair growth. They also help make your hair stronger.

Brazil Nuts: These nuts have an abundance of selenium, which helps the body produce glutathione. Cells need regular rejuvenation to slow damage, which causes the skin to age. All nuts are good for you so grab your daily fistful and enjoy.

Blueberries: These berries contain antioxidants, which help fight free radicals that can cause facial wrinkles. Enjoy them on cereal, with cream, or by themselves. www.thegoodsmag.co

The GOODS on Video Games

By Michael T. Brewer

In the next coming months, the two console juggernauts: Xbox One and Playstation 4 will be released to the world. These two consoles will go head to head for your dollar this Holiday season. If you are not a serious gamer or even follow video games, these two consoles can be overwhelming. However, with such huge releases, there are some consoles flying under the radar doing a few things differently. Fear not, here are a couple of consoles that are not only less complicated but more accessible to anyone who just want to play games.

The OUYA From the mind of Julie Uhrman, the OUYA is a fully hackable device that runs on Android OS. Bringing the same kind of gaming apps from your phone to your Hi-Definition Television running games on stunning 1080p resolution. The OUYA started as a fund-raising campaign on the ever-popular Kickstarter. The goal was to bring mobile apps to the big screen in a seamless experience. Not only that, but to give users the ability to fully customize and “root” (hack) their device to create home-brewed applications and functions. For those who aren’t as tech-savvy, the console comes out the box ready to play. The library of games at the moment available for purchase are over 400. Not to mention, if you’re into retro gaming, there are various emulators from Playstation 1 to Super NES that you can purchase. All of the games are free to try. The OUYA retails for $99.99 which includes one controller, HDMI Cord, power adapter and batteries. (Additional controllers are $49.99.) Everything you need to get you up and running within minutes. Its small enough to fit in your purse or messenger bag. Its sleek, sexy and perfect for gaming on-the-go.

The Gamestick This pint-size console is about the size of Flash Drive. It plugs right into a HDMI port of any HD TV or LCD display. The Gamestick comes equipped with a Bluetooth controller that houses the Gamestick when you aren’t using it. It runs on the current Android OS and has a very similar set-up as the OUYA but isn’t as hack-friendly. The Gamestick retails for $79.99 and comes with the controller and Gamestick. (Available 10/29/13)

LISTEN TO THIS Little Nikki Artist: Little Nikki Album: Little Nikki Says (Single) Label: Columbia Records UK Genre: Pop

By Michael Tremaine Brewer British Pop cool kid Little Nikki makes a bombastic debut with her single “Little Nikki Says. More than just a play on Simon Says, Little Nikki is the leader of the pack commanding everyone to dance hard and party harder.. Her gentle and sweet voice sounds angelic during the pre-chorus before the lead up to the epic dance break. With a thundering stomps and hard drum loop, the song has lots of energy and never stops unless Little Nikki says.

LISTEN TO THIS Kim Cesarion Artist: Kim Cesarion Single: Brains Out Label: UK / Sony Music Sweden Genre: R&B

Swedish Pop/R&B crooner Kim Cesarion channels ‘80s Pop and ‘70s Funk on his single “Brains Out.” Kim’s falsetto is spot on and his gentle whisper of “I wanna love your brains out” oozes sensuality and sex appeal without being creepy or desperate. The song has tingles of retro instrumentation paired with contemporary Pop melodies intertwine in perfect harmony.

Southern California Rockers The Colourist bring their brand of West Coast rock on the summery tune “Little Things.” Breezy vocals, catchy lyrics, and amazing guitar riffs seems to blur by just like Summer that you have to play it over and over.

In the spotlight

Musician Spotlight:

San Diego’s own Hiphop artist X.O. By Solomon Osayande Jr.

Southern California loves X.O. and the talented artist loves the collective cities that form the illustrious SO Cal culture right back. As this emcee’s California fan base continues to grow, so does the demand for more from the young hiphop artist. Since the G.O.O.D.S. last checked in with the 6’6’’ lyricist nearly a year ago, X.O. has leapt several industry hurdles landing him several steps closer to hiphop superstardom. So far 2013 has witnessed the tall-statured artist who looks like a hoopstar blessed with lyrical abilities, begin to reap some of the benefits of his lyrical success. Critically acclaimed songs from this artist which include “Orange Soda”, “Get Live”, and “Amanda Bynes”, have earned the 24-year-old features and recognition from dozens of websites and publications such as Complex, Noisey, indy.livemixtapes.com, thissongslaps, thisis50.com, and XXL to name a few. 2013 has also witnessed X.O.’s first licensing deal through Tony Hawk’s 900 films which featured his song Orange Soda (The music video is approaching 100,000 views on youtube in one year since its upload).

With a fan base that is catching on like one of California’s many wild fires, the young emcee’s presence can no longer be localized. X.O.’s steadily growing social media presence as well as his popularity in San Diego is on the rise. The gifted artist has set his sights on making his presence known throughout the music world and is utilizing the help of his sponsors, clothing companies Fortune Cookie Clothing and Boom Tho, and his affiliation with Top Floor Music Group to help his talent and popularity ascend to new heights. X.O. appears to have all of the ingredients to superstardom but isn’t allowing complacency to halt his progression as an artist and entertainer. This past August 17th X.O. took his talents to Nor Cal along with fellow Top Floor Music Group hiphop emcee/producer Kidd Upstairs to perform some of their latest songs for a sold out Sacramento crowd. With the crowd chanting and recanting lyrics from some of X.O.’s latest work, to the artist being accosted for several autographs from overzealous fans, it is apparent that X.O. is ready for his time in the limelight. X.O.’s recently appeared as a special guest performer at San Diego hiphop nightclub F6ix where the emcee performed infront of a capacity crowd while helping celebrate the one-year anniversary of Fingaz Fridayz. You can find more X.O. at facebook.com/ xorockstarmuzik, twitter.com/porfavorian, and by visiting www.mrporfavorian.com. Follow this artist to catch everything X.O. including upcoming release dates to his latest music videos, performances, and projects.
