Do! by all means wear white after Labor Day! The ancient rule no white after Labor Day went out when fashion came in. White can be great for the winter in a dress, jacket or coat, try pairing it with darker accessorize to maintain balance.

Do! throw all white tights and stockings away! This is not Sunday school and nothing looks good with white stockings not even your Easters best. White stockings add weight and make even the slimmest legs look tender; it also gives you an outdated appeal.

Do! keep vibrant colors in your closet all year long! Just because that sun shining summer has gone away doesn’t mean the colors don’t want to still stay out and play. Bright colors go great in any season never be afraid to go bold even in the middle of winter. Try mixing shades of gray with a citrus greens and yellows.

Do! remember less is always more! When accessorizing never overdue it, too much of something can be a distraction. If you plan on doing your own circus show this is a great way to go otherwise keep it simple. Remember a nice shoe can go a long way and can stand as an accessory all by itself.

11

Last and certainly not at their least, would the real men please step forward. Fellas school is now in session.

Do! know Pretty Pink and Pleasant Pastels brings out the real man in you! Try a pink or pastel color v neck sweater. This look can be worn with or without a button down underneath. You can dress it up or casually down and still manage to maintain your masculinity.

Do! throw away the tighty whities! Yes I said it! Your mother should not be your go to guru for your under garments. This fashion mishap should never be found hiding in your drawers. Women prefer briefs it ads sex appeal and provides a good support system for peter the piper.

Do! play mix and match with your ties and shirts! You don’t have to always play it safe with a solid on solid. A solid button down and tie to match is simply BORING. Throw the shirt off balance with patterns. For fashionable fun try a polka dot tie with a plaid shirt, it gives you that geeky fashion yes stamp.

12

Do! know that size matters! Get your mind out the gutter! Although it may be flattering to you to beef up the unmentionable area, know that it’s not to others. Wearing pants that are too tight around the waist can cause an unflattering bulk in the crotch area and looks very tacky. If you have this problem try getting those pants tailored, that way you can never go wrong with size.

On February 11th, 2010, the fashion industry took a hit when British born designer, Alexander “Lee” McQueen tragically took his own life. Most were devastated by the news, wondering if the brand would still stand, or if its doors would close forever. But that’s when Sarah stepped in. Sarah Burton worked beside McQueen for nearly 15 years, and it’s clear she sought the same version for the house as her late boss once did. There is no harder task in fashion as to when some one new takes over a fashion brand. You must keep the same anesthetic it’s followers are so familiar with, but give it your own flair to make yourself known as a designer, and that is exactly what Sarah did with Alexander McQueen.

It was evident that Sarah had kept the uniqueness of the McQueen brand. She did so, so effortlessly keeping intact with Alexander’s vision. Sarah really softened the trademark McQueen look. Taking his famous tailcoat and leaving the edges unfinished, as she did with the peaked shoulders, slashing them for a move relaxed feel. She opened with a soft palette of white but quickly took a turn to the exotic prints we all know and love. Making nature her muse, she showcased a butterfly inspired dress, with shoes to match. And taking what looked like black Ivy, draping it around the model, and forming a dress. But it was the final dress that made everyone sit at the edge of their seats. Sarah’s final was an absolute showstopper, featuring the same silhouette as many of the garments seen on the runway, but with an extra wide skirt that seemed to have been covered in some type grey feather, it danced beautiful with the model down the runway.

14

Maybe it was Sarah’s gender, but the stage too had a softer feel to it. Seeking a more nature-esque motherly feel, where Alexander’s stages were usually bleak, dark, and cold. Sarah’s staging was more nurturing, and more welcoming.

One thing is for sure, Sarah has proved to the fashion industry that she can be just as exciting and can put on a show just as well as Alexander. It’s going to be such a journey watching Sarah take the label and reinvent it. Now that Sarah has proved her familiarity with the brand, it’s going to be riveting watching the brand grow and flourish to a new vision for the house.

co Design was first named “Product of the Earth” in 2007 back in college and so began the idea for the clothing line it has made Eco Design by Trina Nyangoto the strong idea and company it is today. Sure, credit must be give though where credit is due. I’ve had many influences along the way back in 2002 a co-worker of mine taught me on her kitchen floor patterns and I worked with Deborah Lindquist a Ecofriendly designer for a short time as well she was a great influence in the Ecofriendly direction. However, I always had a very strong spiritual pull toward the earth and environment my great aunt noticed that early on.

17

“You’re good with animals” she said, and I was, I had a special connection in childhood with animals and nature. Even my mom Patricia Ann Weems who encouraged me to sew even though I resisted her when in my early teens said so I was “different” wasn’t like the other kids there was eight of us. So, I guess in retrospect I was always going to do something great. My dad David Lee Weems who owned his owned painting contracting family business called me “The smart one”. Well design is something I fell into. However, my skills where obviously gained from both my mom and dad genetically. My counselor in High School had me pegged for it but I didn’t want it. I went into Dental Assisting my senior year and graduated with straight A’s .

In my 30’s I got injured on the job and really wanted my creative side to come out more. I took graphic design, didn’t love it and had time to explore. So, I finished the Corse and relaxed for a few years. Within three and a half to four years I figured out I wanted to go back to work and worked for a wholesale clothing company for men’s suits 2002-2003 at the end of that I was board and decided to go back to school Mount San Antonio College 2003-2004 for Fashion Merchandising I loved it and flourished there. I challenged my teachers and my craft.

20

The theme of my clothing line is Eco-friendly fabric natural at its manufactured base. I always thought wouldn’t it be great if fabric felt good and didn’t irritate your skin or smell bad. I would walk into a department store and just smell the dye on the fabric. Yep, I’m that sensitive to the smell and dye of the fabrics and you know what, I don’t think I’m the only one out here that is. I believe my line will appeal to a broad spectrum of clients and clothing customers that are the same sensitivity level. As a child I had food allergies and skin allergies and even as an adult still have some food allergies to wheat. It’s affected the way I design and create my line of clothing. I like to create clean lines and keep my clothing clean, fun and elegant. I first went to Mount San Antonio College then that ended short from a major illness and misdiagnosis. This misdiagnosis would bring about my design “blooming” you could say so to speak.

would start to draw these amazing drawings that started in college back at Mount San Antonio College and haven’t stopped since. Two major events would happen next I would meet my now husband and go back to school. I met my husband July 2006 I had to re-start college in January 2007 at the Art Institute Ai Los Angeles and there I began “Product of the Earth” and the fabrics, colors and stylization of designs reflect or mimic the many aspects in relation to earthly elements. The colors in this line are as diverse as the line itself, the sun twinkling off of a translucent tropical ocean ripple in Tahiti for example. The dresses are made to feel young, girly and fun always with fabric that is both comfortable and wearable stylized in with fabric that naturally resemble vanilla bean icecream for instance .

100% FINE LINEN SHELL LINEN NECK LINED. $249.00

The khaki and green dress are both stylized as a contemporary moderate women’s dress. The length is to the knee but the neck plummets giving the dress a fun yet sophisticated look that can be worn in the fall. Butterflies are designed on both the white flower collar and orchids on the sleeve of the dresses which goes along with my theme “Eco Design” giving attention to our need to wake up and take care of our planet earth. Flowers always did fascinate me as a child looking down at their full patches in the earth imagining little people living there. I even wrote a story with characters called “Willow Creek” I once started a company name when living in the city of Brea creating dried flower arrangements. I really pay attention to contrast when drawing the butterflies for example:

ight on dark when looking at the butterflies. All aspects of my designs relate to the earth and creation either through stylization, design or color. I have big dreams for Eco Design, however I’m done with dreaming it’s time to make it all a reality from 2010 on into 2011. I give praise to Jehovah for this precious gift of art form he’s given me the happiness I’ve gained and is incomparable to any past gift I’ve received. I truly feel I’m living the life I have been longing for all these years and it will only get better. Thank you.

IN SYNC WITH SUCCINCT

ART

BY:LINDSAY BARAJAS

30

When I say poetry who do you think about? Shakespeare? Shel Silverstein? Erykah Badu? All have been written into the history books for their own reasons, yet none are who I’m referring to. I’m talking about one very talented woman named Tabitha Brown aka, Succinct. Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Tabitha Brown eventually uprooted her life to travel the world by joining the U.S. Navy ending up in San Diego eight years later. When I found out I was getting the chance to sit down with Succint I was very excited being that I am familiar with her and her work. Now I know this sounds so cliché but this was a very crucial first question leading into a very warm and elaborate interview, I had to know.

31

G.O.O.D.S: Who is your inspiration? Succint: “When I first started out, I went to a spot held by a group locally called Collective Purpose. The first poet that I actually ever saw spit on a microphone in person was Rudy Francisco. He is like a big brother to me now and he serves as that goal that I’m trying to ascertain. He is my biggest pusher, and my biggest inspiration as far as poetry is concerned. I have a lot of respect for him.” G.O.O.D.S: How do you feel about being on the San Diego Slam Team? Were you very surprised at first? Succinct: “I was soo excited! I was so excited. I’ve been trying for the past three years. The first time, I lost to Nikki Blak. I didn’t feel bad about that. But this year being on the slam team was great. I got to work with a lot of awesome poets. We’ve got Ant Black, Rudy Francisco, Jerrica Escoto who is awesome. Also Imani Cezanne, who is amazing and is going to be a demon on the mic as she grows. It was great, we went to nationals and people were like, “San Diego? Who is San Diego?” Then we placed 6th in the nation and everybody was like, “Oh! That’s San Diego”. So it was cool being a part of that”. G.O.O.D.S: What is your most memorable experience thus far? Succinct: “Oh gosh. Umm. Performing on the main stage at the music fest in North Park. That was Awesome! And I swear the rehearsals are so much better than the actual performance from just being silly and being open. So my best experiences have been with Collective Purpose and performing with them. It gave me a lot more confidence.”

G.O.O.D.S: What advice do you have for upcoming poets; men, women and youth that are really trying to get into poetry?

Succinct: “Do it, do it. Do not be afraid. Learn your poem. Memorize your poems. It’s so funny I had to learn this from slamming and doing open mics that, they’re there to see you. They’re there to hear whatever you have to say. And you have to have confidence in that knowing that you know what, you guys need to hear what I have to say. So this is what I have to give you. You never know who needs to hear your message.”

32

G.O.O.D.S: How do you feel about poetry as an industry?

Succinct: “UUGGHHHH!! I thank Def Poetry for putting a spotlight on slam and open mics and things like that, but it was almost damning in the same. It’s just how people feel about the hip hop and the rap industry. That’s how poets who have been around for a little bit feel about open mic and slamming. It’s not about the content anymore, it’s about how loud you can yell, and how much you can cry during a piece. It’s about the theatrics more so than it’s about the poetry.”

G.O.O.D.S: And how about you. How do you feel?

Succinct: “I think that as long as you have great content, you can have great theatrics. BUT, you can’t just have theatrics and no content.”

After the interview, I walked away feeling like I’ve known Ms. Brown for years. I can easily say she is one of the most down to earth people I have met in a long time and plan on following her career more frequently than I had before. By the middle of the interview, I realized Succinct has grown very close to Collective Purpose from inspiration to most memorable experience. Now for all of you who don’t know who Collective Purpose is, it’s time to get familiar. This well renowned poetic group features its three core performers, Rudy Francisco, Ant Black, and Kendrick Dial within the group of seven educators, entertainers, activists, and organizers. This is a talented group of individuals who bring a presence when on stage better than my words would do justice. So I encourage everyone to search their name and check them out when you get the chance. To get a complete idea of their collective purpose I highly recommend their poem called, “Tha Movement”. After getting to know more about Succinct as an individual, I wanted to know more about her as a poet. For spoken word poets, making the Slam Team in their city is a HUGE DEAL! This allows them to represent their city in the National Poetry Slam. As for the past San Diego Slam Teams, they have usually been dominated by the male poets.

33

For all of you who didn’t know, Succinct was recently on the 2010 San Diego Slam Team and represented the city well with the men. As stated in one of her answers, the 2010 San Diego Slam Team placed 6th out of 76 teams at the National Poetry Slam. So now that we know the San Diego Slam Team is not to be messed with, we also know when there is hard work and dedication, you can achieve your highest goals as did Succinct in making the Slam Team this year. But that is never the end of it. Through all of our discussion in the interview, Succinct allowed me to see that poetry is more than words coming from thought and into the crowd. Poetry is one’s experience being shared with strangers who never knew you existed before you stepped into the spotlight.

Once she mentioned her experiences and most memorable moments, I asked if she had any advice for upcoming poets. She gave very inspiring advice that made even me confident just by listening. The biggest piece of advice she gave was to be confident in your work and to believe in yourself to give others what they may need to hear. To never think, “I can’t do it” and always think, “This is what I have to say. So hear it”. To hear something like that sounds so raw yet so real. Overall it seems like a very simple solution to fear of public speaking, confidence, and stage fright. So just, “Do it” as Succinct stated so confidently, “Just do it”.

THE GOODS ON KELSEY MAREE by Shay Dean

I recently caught up with Kelsey Maree @ The Hive Studio in Hollywood, Ca to ask her about life, love, and her journey to stardom. Here’s just a few things she shared: Shay Dean: How do your friends and family feel about you following your dreams as a performer? Kelsey Maree: My family is really supportive and behind me all the way. My friends love it…[pauses and laughs]…my friends back home in Australia think I’m famous. Shay Dean: So I hear you have a manager, can you tell me more about that? Kelsey Maree: Yes, I am being managed by Milian Management. Christina Milian’s mother Carmen manages Christina and I. Shay Dean: Who are you working with as far as production goes? Kelsey Maree: Right now I am working with Dillan Pace. I really like working with Dillan. We get along great and vibe really well. We are co-writing music and he is also doing the engineering. He is very talented.

38

Shay Dean: So I’m sure everyone wants to know, are you single? Kelsey Maree: No, I’m not. I have a boyfriend. He is very supportive and never gets jealous…[pauses]… well except that one time. Shay Dean: What do you have coming up in the near future? Kelsey Maree: I am going to be shooting a video for my single “Romeo”… can’t give too much details but it should be really fun. INSIDE SCOOP on KELSEY MAREE: Her favorite artists are Bruno Mars and Neyo. According to Kelsey, the real NEYO is actually following her on twitter!! VISITING VEGAS IS LIKE VISITING THE INTERNET; NEARLY ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE, AND THE FAKENESS, THE GLITTER, THE FAUX GLAM, THAT’S WHAT MAKES IT REAL.

42

FOR AMY, IT’S FACEBOOK, A SAFE PLACE TO MEET ALL SORTS OF PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE, GRAB A COCKTAIL, HAVE A REAL INSTANT MESSAGE WITH A COMPLETE STRANGER, OR EVEN A LIFELONG FRIEND.

43

ADULT FRIEND FINDER? YA, THAT’S ASHLEY BECAUSE LETS FACE IT, SOMETIMES, A GIRL JUST HAS TO WIG OUT, GET BACK ON THE SADDLE; SAVE A HORSE, RIDE A COWBOY.

44

FOR ANGELA, VEGAS IS HER EBAY, A PLACE WHERE SHE CAN SHOP UNTIL HER EXPENSE ACCOUNT RUNS OUT, AND THEN SHOP SOME MORE.

45

46

FOR AMELE IT’S NETFLIX, SHE LIKES THE SHOWS, SHE’S SEEN FOUR DIFFERENT CIRQUE DU SOLEIL’S, AND COUNTING.

47

FOUR GIRLS, ONE NIGHT, AND WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS STAYS IN VEGAS; A COCKTAIL STRONGER THAN A RUM AND COKE, SWEETER THAN A MANHATTAN, DOWN THE HATCH LIKE A SHOT, AND FEELS LIKE A BOTTLE OF ABSINTHE. WELCOME TO VEGAS. EACH OF THEM WILL GET THEIR FILL, THEIR OWN VEGAS EXPERIENCE. SOMEHOW, AT THE END OF THE NIGHT, ASHLEY IS GOING TO BE SLEEPING WITH HER HEAD IN THE TOILET BOWL. AMY IS GOING TO HOOK UP WITH AN INVESTMENT BANKER, ONLY TO FIND HIS WIFE IS LESS THAN THRILLED. AMELE, WELL, SHE’S NICOLE. AND ANGELA, SHE MAY BE THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN REMEMBER HOW ALL THIS HAPPENED. A HERD OF BLACK DRESSES AND STILETTO HEALS GRAZE ON THE FLOOR OF THEIR SUITE, LITTERING THE OFT-DISTURBED LANDSCAPE. CHAMPAGNE GLASSES, STILL HALF FULL, WATCHING THE SCENE FROM THE TABLE, OFFERING THEIR REMARKS AND CONDOLENCES AS THEY WAIT IDLY FOR DESPERATE LIPS, ONCE WRAPPED UPON THEIR BOWL. AND OF COURSE, SINCE THIS IS VEGAS AFTER ALL, THREE CELL PHONES AND TWO IDS HAVE MIRACULOUSLY MANAGED TO MIGRATE BACK TO SUITE; A SMALL VICTORY FOR SOME, AND AN ADVENTURE FOR OTHERS.

TAO:ASIAN BISTRO

LOCATED IN THE VENETIAN HOTEL OFF OF THE LAS VEGAS STRIP IS THE FAMOUS TAO ASIAN BISTRO. MADE FAMOUS IN NEW YORK CITY AND STILL CONSIDERED THE TOP RESTAURANT IN BOTH CITIES TAO HAS CERTAINLY BUILT A REPUTATION FOR BOTH TRAVELERS AND FOOD CONNOISSEURS ALIKE, AND FOR GREAT REASON.

54

WHEN YOU FIRST ARRIVED IN TAO YOU WALK THROUGH A SMALL CORRIDOR FILLED WITH FOUR SMALL POOLS EACH FILLED WITH ROSE PETALS. THE FRONT DESK IS TO THE LEFT WHERE WE CHECKED FOR OUR RESERVATION. THE FRONT OF THE PLACE IS A HUGE LOUNGE WITH NO DINING TABLES AND A LARGE BAR. AFTER WAITING A SHORT MINUTE OR TWO WE WERE ESCORTED UPSTAIRS TO OUR TABLE. THE STAIRCASE IS COVERED WITH SHEER DRAPES FROM TOP TO BOTTOM SO WHEN WALKING IT FEELS LIKE YOU ARE BEING TAKEN TO A PRIVATE AREA. WHEN WE ARRIVED TO OUT TABLE WE NOTICED A LARGE 16 FOOT HAND CARVED BUDDHA IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RESTAURANT. THE BUDDHA FLOAT ATOP A KOI POND. THE LIGHT CHANGES FROM RED TO WHITE TO BLUE, I GUESS TO REMIND YOU THAT YOU ARE STILL IN AMERICA, EASY TO FORGET WHEN YOU LOOK UP TO THE CEILINGS AND SEE LARGE JAPANESE CHARACTER 4X4 PANELS AND PHOTOS OF LOCAL CHINESE CITIZEN ON RURAL FARMLAND. UPON BEING SEATED BY THE HOST WE WERE GREETED BY OUR SERVER MIKE HOLMES. HE ASKED IF WE WOULD LIKE SOME WATER AND GAVE US OUR WINE MENUS. BEFORE I CONTINUE LET ME TAKE THE TIME TO TELL YOU A LITTLE ABOUT MYSELF, I GREW UP AS A KID DRINKING OUT OF THE WATER HOSE BECAUSE IT WAS TOO HOT OUTSIDE TO PLAY WITH DEHYDRATION BUT TO FUN TO GO BACK INSIDE AND RELAX. I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A SWEET TOOTH AND WATER WAS NOT A REGULAR PART OF MY DIET. IF ASKED WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TASTE AND FEEL OF TAP WATER TO BOTTLED WATER AT ANY GIVEN TIME I WOULD TELL YOU “THE FAUCET IS FREE”. IT IS OF COURSE A BIT DIFFERENT ONCE YOU GET TO VEGAS, THE LIGHTS LET YOU LIVE, AND LIVING GETS YOU FIGI BOTTLED WATER. IS IT SAFE TO SAY I’M A FULL CONVERT? TRICK QUESTION, OF COURSE NOT, THE FAUCET IS FREE, BUT THE QUALITY IN THAT PARTICULAR BOTTLED WATER IS AMAZING (SORRY I’M LATE). UPON TAKING FIRST SIPS THE SERVER RETURNED IMMEDIATELY AFTER TO REFILL

55

56

57

OUR GLASSES, IMMEDIATELY I LET MY GUARD DOWN, “I WANT TO TRY IT ALL” I SAID, BEFORE THE SERVER COULD FIX HIS LIPS TO PREACH TO US HIS LONG LIST OF RECOMMENDATIONS. HE KNEW HOW I FELT AND PLACED THE MENUS HE STILL HAD IN HIS HAND BEHIND HIM. HE OFFERED US SAKE AND BEING THAT THIS WAS OUR FIRST TIME WE STARTED WITH SOMETHING SWEET, TWO 5 OZ PURE PLUM

FOR STARTERS WE HAD EDAMAME, BOILED SOY BEANS IN THEIR POD; THEY REMINDED ME OF PEANUTS OR CHIPS. A LIGHT SNACK THAT WAS SO GOOD I ALMOST RUINED MY APPETITE. I STEPPED OUT FOR A MOMENT ONLY TO RETURN TO A TABLE FULL OF A VARIETY OF APPETIZERS. ONE SPECIFIC PLATE WAS LEFT EMPTY AND IT WAS NOT MY DINING PLATE. WE WERE SERVED A SATAY OF CHILEAN SEA BASS WITH WOK ROASTED ASPARAGUS. I WAS ABLE TO TRY THE ASPARAGUS AND I MUST SAY IT’S THE BEST I’VE EVER HAD. I DID NOT GET A CHANCE TO TRY THAT PARTICULAR FISH AS MY PARTNER HAD FINISHED IT ALL; FROM WHAT I HEAR IT’S DELICIOUS. AMONG THE SEA BASS THOUGH WAS A COUPLE STRIPS OF YELLOWTAIL SASHIMI WITH JALAPENO AND PONZU SAUCE. I HAVE NEVER BEEN A FAN OF RAW FISH BUT FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS NIGHT I HAVE CONVERTED. EACH STRIP WAS THE PERFECT SIZE AND I NEVER FELT LIKE I WAS OVERSTUFFING MY MOUTH, THE SPICE OF THE SAUCE AND JALAPENO COMBINATION WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD. I WANTED TO FINISH THEM ALL BUT I HAD TO MOVE ON, SCANNING THE TABLE TO FIND WHAT WAS LEFT I SEE DECENT SIZED BOWEL FILLED WITH LOBSTER WONTONS WITH SHIITAKE

58

GINGER BROTH. I’VE ALWAYS LOVED LOBSTER AND I HAVE ALWAYS HEARD ABOUT WONTONS BUT COULD NEVER BRING MYSELF TO ACTUALLY PURCHASE AND SEE IF IT’S WORTH MY TIME IN FEAR THAT IT MIGHT BE TOO GOOD YET TOO LITTLE TO FILL ME UP, THEN OF COURSE I WOULD BUY MORE AND BY THE END OF THE MEAL I WOULD BE ABOUT $200 FATTER. I SAY ALL THAT TO ASK A SIMPLE QUESTION, DOES EVERYTHING IN VEGAS HAVE TO BE A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE? AGAIN I HAVE FOUND MYSELF IN A PREDICAMENT IN WHICH I HAVE TO CHANGE MY THINKING AND EATING HABITS. THE WORST PART FOR ME ABOUT THIS MEAL IS THAT WE HAVE NOT GOTTEN TO THE MAIN COURSE YET. AS WE BOTH LIKE OUR STEAKS MEDIUM AND INFORMED THE SERVER OF THIS WE WAITED FOR A SHORT PERIOD BEFORE BEING BROUGHT OUT A BEAUTIFUL DISPLAY OF A 12 STRIP PRIME RIB WITH JAPANESE PURPLE SWEET POTATOES CARAMELIZED WITH BROWN SUGAR. THIS IS AN ITEM THEY ONLY SERVE TWO WEEKS OUT OF THE ENTIRE YEAR, WHICH IS UNDERSTANDABLE BECAUSE WE WOULDN’T WANT THE COWS TO BECOME EXTINCT DUE TO THE RAPID INCREASE TO THE ORDER OF PRIME RIB. THIS STEAK MELTS IN YOUR MOUTH LITERALLY; TO SAY I DEVOURED THAT STEAK WOULD BE AN UNDERSTATEMENT. THE POTATOES WERE A PERFECT COMBINATION, THOUGH A LITTLE ON THE TOUGH SIDE, I BELIEVE THOSE PARTICULAR POTATOES COULD POSSIBLE REMAIN THAT WAY NOT MATTER WHAT YOU DO, GREAT TASTE NONETHELESS. PRESENTATION IS EVERYTHING AND THIS RESTAURANT BRINGS THAT PLUS MUCH MORE IN SERVICE AND QUALITY. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO ADD SOME EXTRA TO THEIR ORDINARY.

IMITATION IS THE BEST FORM OF FLAT TERY The original Luxor is the world’s greatest open air museum, now just ruins in Egypt can be relived in Las Vegas, Nevada. The shuttle bus drives me from the airport to my destination, which is 3900 Las Vegas Boulevard South Las Vegas, NV 89119. Staring out the window of the bus, as I arrive at my location my eyes capture the true meaning of beauty, as my tourist mode kicks in and I start clicking away at the outside of the Luxor hotel, a magnificent bronze tint pyramid and the sphinx statue towers me, as I enter threw the sliding doors to make my way to the front desk to check in. The hotel air conditioning relieves my body from the Las Vegas heat and I make my way to my room which is also known as the “Deluxe Tower Room”! Feeling like a modern day Cleopatra I look around at my room amenities, a king size bed, 27” color television, separate tub and shower lighted make-up mirror, spacious armoire and so much more. I make my way over to the window, which has a spectacular view of the Las Vegas Strip and I think to myself, “What happens in Vegas, won’t stay in Vegas!” So many decisions to choose from as I decide what to do first, Luxor has thousands of international tourists arriving annually to visit who all contribute a large part towards the hotel’s nightlife, which include LAX Nightclub, Cathouse, Noir Bar, Aurora, Liquidity, Flight, High Bar, and Playbar. When I awoke from a night of clubbing I enjoyed the hotel shows which include Criss Angel Believe from Cirque du Soleil, Fantasy, Carrot Top and Menopause the Musical. I have received nothing but the best ever since I book my trip with them and I am ever so grateful, as their hotel hold five star dining and fast food in my budget to fit the recession, the food court which is open seven days a week from 6am to midnight, carries restaurants such as McDonald’s, Little Caesar, Starbucks, and etc. For your chance to visit a place that reputation precedes them, please check out their website at

The size of Lavo is small in comparison to Tao, but that is part of its appeal. Many patrons begin the night at the restaurant downstairs, then head over to the lounge or the patio area earlier in the night. And when the club opens, some people will start the party at Lavo before heading over to Tao or go to Tao first and come to Lavo.

Lavo does a great job of mixing things up too. The events and special appearances at the club make it a popular destination and are part of the reason why it is one of the few nightclubs on the Strip to be open six days a week. Lavo is also the spot where Joaquin Phoenix made his rap debut (see the horrendous display on Youtube).

If you can, order a bottle of Dom Perignon. The presentation of the champagne is epic: a man dressed in a Superman outfit is “flown” out to the table by a host of burly men to deliver the bottle while the movie’s theme song plays.

Many clubs have tried to emulate the style of Lavo and Tao, but few have succeeded. The clubs have set the bar and until you have tried them, you can’t say that you have truly experienced the best Vegas has to offer.

Grime Wave London While the American club scene may be a stranger to the underground music movement in the United Kingdom, grime, no doubt it is steadily on the rise. Quickly spreading from it’s origin in East London to the greater UK and beyond with beats like a boxer in a ring, on the move, evolving and fast-paced, grime is a little bit like hip-hop on crack, a little erratic and always an adventure.

With a following stronger than a heartbeat and more set to burst than a pressure cooker, the hub of whats to come from the foremost key players in the scene, occurs weekly event Forward>> a tiny venue in the heart of Shoreditch, East London.

The Dirt on the UK’s Nastiest New Beats BY: ALEXA MANGRUM

Two clairvoyants of the movement Elijah and William aka Skilliam Butterz, MC’S on London’s Rinse FM provide the grass-roots gateway into the inter-core of the grime scene. Quickly on their way to wrapping up their biggest year to date, kicking off with some serious buzz in Pitchfork, the musical voyeur for all things about to become big, the two truly know what’s what and what will become, hosting a weekly show to all things noveau Elijah sits down with The G.O.O.D.S to catch us up on the A-Z of London’s newest music movement.

65

G.O.O.D.S: What was the evolution of grime, how did do you seen it evolving in the future? It went from being a dark style of garage which was going cheesy early nineties into music made for clubs and MCs, then kind of into a hip hop offshoot now its going back towards the clubs and DJ orientated music. It hasn’t really remained static. Here in London problems in dance music kind of naturally fix themselves. Too cheesy, you get grime, too grimey, you get funky, too funky you get grimey, so I think people are going back and forth between these points. Fans, producers, DJs, radio, nobody can make their mind up. It is all really one big family of music. G.O.O.D.S: What attracted you to the scene and to later produce a popular monthly mixtape? I started Djing in late 2008 and since then I have just been doing everything I have wanted as a customer and as a fan beforehand. No other Grime DJs do regular mixes, and I don’t understand why! I love them, just listen on your ipod or in the car the freshest selection of tunes, every month, in the space of 40 mins. It does well virally and has helped us get out there as DJs to more people, and helps people learn the music we will be bringing to the clubs. Without at least a mix a month I doubt we would of attracted a nice little following like we have. G.O.O.D.S: Who makes up the typical grime audience? Its a really young audience still, but it has been a mixture of people for over 5 years now. It depends how they got into the music, some people approach it like hip hop, and listen to artists mixtapes, some follow it like dance music, going to the clubs, buying singles, vinyl or whatever, and some kind of follow the dramas in the scene via Grime Daily videos and stuff like that. G.O.O.D.S: Has grime been on the increase or decline? An easy answer is to say a decline, because sales of the music have never been amazing, but this is the era of music we live in. Kids dont really pay for music anymore so judging a scene on sales is a bit silly. It is reaching far and wide in different ways with little to no infrastructure or organization that I think is a massive achievement. The Internet is keeping it alive at the moment! It is really confusing for people because you have artists from our scene on television doing the worst pop music ever, going number one and doing major tours across the country which is great, but it isn’t the grime sound. Then you have someone like Terror Danjah who

66

is pushing the actual Grime sound in an electronic music direction and is doing shows all over Europe and releasing music on well-known labels. I think a balance of both is a good way of looking at grime in general. G.O.O.D.S: When making your mix-tapes what would you consider more important: the beats or the vocals? Where does the heart of grime lie in…the former or the later? Nowadays we are keeping the sound pure, so your not going to hear pop on our mixtapes, people come to us for that cutting edge stuff, and right now that’s driven by the beats. Mixing the quality beats with the really strong vocal stuff is how we have made our names and it is working we wont change until the balance of great vocals outweighs great instrumentals, which doesn’t look like it is going to happen any time soon. I do believe the heart of Grime does lie in the MC music, as they are the faces, the people that initially got the music out there to the masses in the first place, but people can go to Logan or Cameo for that kind of stuff. G.O.O.D.S: How much do you infuse classics with new? On Rinse we try and keep it upfront as much as possible, I used to be a frustrated listener hearing Grime DJs play the same classic tunes over and over and I just got really bored of them. In the clubs we keep it upfront as well we may drop one or two tunes from the past but nothing obvious like a classic Wiley or Dizzee Rascal vocal. Just seems too cliché now, I’ve moved on. G.O.O.D.S: In the digital age, what inspired you to did you choose to create a vinyl label? Again it was just correcting problems along the way we were having when DJing. We were getting tons of great material, nobody was confident enough to release. It was all going to waste, maybe 70% of the music on our Rinse shows last year will be unreleased material that is unproductive and gives people no motivation to continue. We got things cracking again and people have followed suit, slowly building up their own imprints so it has been a positive thing for us to take the dive and get this music out to the masses again. The reason we did vinyl and digital over just digital is because that is the standard way to release electronic music! Grime has always kind of been sectioned off, but I want it out there alongside the Dubstep scene as a healthy alternative. There hasn’t been this much Grime on vinyl for over 3 years as everyone stopped doing them and moved onto mix tapes, but artist mixtapes are more hip hop culture and that’s not where I want it to go. I want it in the clubs!

67

G.O.O.D.S: Described as the soundtrack to East London, do you see grime as accessible as a global movement? The instrumental side can be, because theres no language barrier. I think we are a long way away from seeing UK MCs taking the sound global. The DJs and producers will do it first! G.O.O.D.S: How has East London or London in general been crucial to the development of grime? Its all based around pirate radio stations and raves. Back in the day the main stations were Rinse and De Ja Vu but there were loads of pirates dotted around the town with upcoming, DJs and MCs broadcasting all day every day. Everything is built off of that, without those stations there would be no Grime scene. Even though most pirates are gone now, and a lot of the clubs Grime raves were held are gone as well now, the scene is still dominated by artists that were on these platforms in the first place. All the core artists, Wiley, Dizzee Rascal, Kano, Lethal B, Tinchy Stryder are from East London. G.O.O.D.S: What are your favorite places in London to play? We played in Fabric Room 1 in September that was pretty sick, and for the second time at Plastic People which is a different sort of feeling, especially going there as a fan for the last 5 years and watching loads of other DJs play there. We used to play at a really shit club called the Egg, but it was awesome, the crowd just came to hear Grime so it was really fun. Normally we play alongside other Dubstep or House acts so you wont have a full dance floor of people into it sometimes, but at the Egg everyone came for the Grime. G.O.O.D.S: And the future of grime? Can Grime survive? Nothing ever really dies.. Just evolves the meaning of Grime changes every year, it will change again next year and the year after that. The meaning is still open to interpretation! If you asked me to define Grime to this day I would still struggle!

68

G.O.O.D.S: For someone starting out getting into grime, what where would you suggest starting out? Radio = Rinse FM - Check out shows from Us, Spyro, Vectra, JJ, Teddy etc. Writing check out = Grimeforum.com, Butterz.co.uk and Blackdowns Blog. To download classic sets Grimetapes.com and for any background information on artists Grimepedia.com G.O.O.D.S: As 2010 starts to come to a close looking back on who you predicted future break out stars of 2010 would be have you been correct? If you can say, who do you think will bring in the new year? I only predicted producer wise, I am not as clued up artist wise. I predicted Terror Danjah who has had 7 releases, played all over Europe and has an album dropping on Hyperdub, I was right with him this year. Swindle had a massive cross genre track called ‘Airmiles’ (which I named) that has ended up getting him a deal with Planet Mu and DJ bookings up and down the country and Europe, which was a massive difference to the vocal funky house he was doing at the end of last year. D.O.K has emerged the second half of this year dropping ‘Missing’ and ‘Chemical Planet’ and has music coming out on Hyperdub in 2011. SRC has had 4 releases with Numbers, Rwina, No Hats Ho Hoods & Butterz, so he has really got his music out there, last year he had none! Def an improvement! Royal T has done vocal work with P Money who is arguably the best in the scene at the moment and has releases forthcoming on Butterz and new labels Pitch Controllers and Boogaloo City.

Next year my tips lie with TRC, Mr Mitch, Virgo and DJ Q. Lets see if I am right!

HAIR TRENDS TOP NOTCH

BY: KELL

COLOR CRESEN

Not just for ballerinas, this fresh and flirty up do trend has emerged onto the scene. Worn loose or tight, with or without a fringe, this newfangled twist on the bun looks effortless and actually is. To try it yourself simply sweep you hair up into a high ponytail at the top of your crown. Back comb the tail and twist it, coiling it around and secure with pins. You can also try braiding the ponytail first. Change up your routine by working this topical top knot dressed down or debonair for a flattering hair variant.

Time for a touch up? Not so fast... The latest in hair color craze leaves it darkest at the roots and fades gradually to the ends being the lightest. I asked celebrity colorist and stylist Kareen Boursier of Prive Salon Los Angeles how to achieve this natural beachy style.

70

“This look can be obtained by balayage, a french technique of highlighting the hair in the most natural way by deliberately painting the highlights in varying degrees of width exactly where you want them.

SHOULDER’S BACK

It’s time to say peace out to the hippie hair lengths of seasons past and ride the shoulders of the latest look in longitudes. Locks are hottest when lopped anywhere from a few inches past the chin to a few inches past the collar bone. It’s important to layer and or texturize the ends to keep it contemporary. This style’s options are endless, so experiment with curling irons to create loose waves or hot rollers for a retro style.

NOT JUST AN ADULT DESTINA EXTRAORDINARY LAS VEGAS ATTRACTIONS BY: WHITNEY GOMES

76

ATION:

When most people imagine Vegas, they envision legendary hotels and casinos with extravagant pools complete with open bar service, an insane nightlife, and of course planned (as well as unplanned) weddings conducted at little chapels off the main strip. After all, everyone has seen this all come to life in the 2009 film The Hangover. Fortunately, what happens in Vegas doesn’t always need to stay there when you visit the entertainment capital with your family. There are plenty of ways to have a blast in Vegas when accompanied by children and teens. My very first trip to Las Vegas was in July 2010 when I was only twenty years old and I still had the time of my life. Now, I want to share these attractions and memories I was able experience with you, no matter what your age!

77

The numerous attractions in Vegas include theme parks, roller coasters, museums, National Parks, and so much more. Some theme parks are better known than others because they notoriously push the limit for even the most avid dare-devil. The rides atop the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino precisely fit this description. The phenomenal view alone from the Tower’s observation deck is breath-taking. When you discover the four rides around it, you can understand why this attraction is groundbreaking, not to mention world famous. If you have ever considered skydiving, then SkyJump Las Vegas is the perfect thrill for you. You jump 855 feet from the 108th floor of the tower onto a safety mat. SkyJump is considered a controlled free-fall because you are attached to a harnessed vertical zip line. If you’re seeking a thrill even higher than 855 feet, then have no fear, the three other rides will surely satisfy your fixated soul. X Scream is a teeter totter like coaster that rolls its riders downward towards the Vegas strip and then rolls you back towards the Stratosphere tower. Did I mention this is all 866 feet from the ground and about 29 feet over the edge of the tower? This is an overthe-top version (literally) of the teeter totter you loved at the park as a kid. When the 69 foot long coaster rocks back and forth, it stops midair at a thirty degree angle. If the feeling of flying straight into the ground 900 feet above the Vegas Strip sounds exhilarating to you, then X Scream is just your cup of tea. The two most popular and well-known Stratosphere rides are titled Big Shot and the most epic of all—appropriately named— Insanity. Big Shot reminds riders that what goes up must come down. But in this instance, what goes up is the rider, reaching a peak of 1,087 feet high with its biggest drop at 160 feet within a shocking 2 seconds. The velocity of this ride makes thrill-seekers experience an astonishing 4Gs of force from the initial takeoff. Feeling like a rocket ship in Big Shot almost takes the cake for the most intense attraction at the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino. However you must be undoubtedly insane to ride Insanity. At 906 feet above the Las Vegas Strip and 68 feet over the edge of the tower, passengers are spun around in different directions at a force of up to 3Gs. But what makes Insanity so unique is that it is pro-

78

grammed with more than 100 different variations of the ride. This way, you can create a slower more pleasurable sight-seeing ride with the whole family or a fast, spinning, extreme experience for all ten riders. Aside from the legendary Stratosphere Hotel and Casino attractions, other hotels and locations on and off the strip are entertaining for visitors of all ages. The Luxor Hotel & Casino is a 30 story black glass pyramid located at the south end of the strip. The spacious rooms surround the world’s largest atrium and it has many attractions within it for guests of all ages. The trendiest parts of Vegas are adult shows, thrill rides, or renowned malls with expensive designer duds. But the most astounding and revealing of them all is Bodies-the exhibition within the Luxor. Visitors get an informative, intricate 3-D vision of the human body. These real bodies are preserved with their inner organs by a detailed process known as “polymer preservation” to prevent decaying of the bodies. This exhibition features 21 whole-body specimens, more than 260 organs throughout nine rooms assigned to different body systems. If you visit this system with little ones, it is sure to be eye-opening and convincing that smoking cigarettes is really as bad as they’ve been taught. The room compares a real blackened smoker’s lung to a healthy lung who hadn’t smoked throughout their life. You read eye-opening facts like a single pack of cigarettes takers three hours and forty minutes off your life. When they display a human brain, the experts explain how eating breakfast does wonders for your memory. There is so much more throughout the exhibit with facts you probably never would have known if you hadn’t visited Bodies. Your family can learn how your muscles work, the process of blood pumping to your heart, and exactly how your nervous system controls every thought and emotion you have ever experienced. At the end of the exhibition, you may pick up guest books to jot down your impression of Bodies, buy a takehome organ model, or purchase educational material made for children and teens. For only $31 per ticket, Bodies is a phenomenal experience for the home family and a unique attraction in Las Vegas.

79

Near Boulder City, Nevada outside of Las Vegas, is a flight over the desert valley unlike any plane you’ve ever ridden. This is because you paraglide from the top of Red Mountain via zip-line at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. The minimum weight restriction is only 75 pounds, so most if not all of the family can enjoy this life-changing experience. Once you arrive at the Bootleg Canyon Flightlines’ office your family will go through a quick safety course and then be driven up the canyon hill. After this, everyone in the tour hikes uphill for approximately thirty minutes where you then reach the top of the canyon and the real experience begins. Your tour includes flying through four different runs slowly coasting over the remarkable ecosystem. Though I have not had the chance to soar through a Bootleg Canyon tour, I have promised myself that on my next trip to Vegas, this is an experience guided by nature I cannot miss out on and neither should you! Thus far, I have informed how a family can become an ultimate thrill-rider, renowned scientist, and adventurous sightseeker all in a day’s work during your stay in Vegas. But with its roots of production primarily based on Vegas crime, you can’t forget about CSI: The Experience at MGM Grand. Have you ever wanted to be a Crime Scene Investigator for a day? Well the MGM Grand Hotel has made that possible with this popular attraction. CBS Network premiered the hit show CSI: Las Vegas on October 6th, 2000. The original series follows Las Vegas criminalists as they utilize physical evidence to solve murders in an abnormally graphic way. The show has been recognized as the most popular dramatic series internationally throughout its ten seasons. The total cost of the MGM Grand simulated experience was $5 million to create! You will be using critical thinking to put together the clues found at 1 of the 3 different crime scene mysteries with 3 murders and 15 suspects. This is a hands-on exhibit that gives you the most real-life idea of what an actual crime scene investigator

80

accomplishes. Before starting your experience, you are given an investigation sheet to record observations at the scene followed by viewing an introductory video by creator Anthony E. Zuiker and even cast members from the show. All guests get to choose which life-size crime scene they want to investigate. The first crime is titled “A House Collided” which displays a car through a living room window. The second crime scene, “Who Got Served?”, shows a young female dead behind a motel. While the last one called “No Bones About it!” has different bones including a human skull buried in the sand of a desert. All three of the crime scenes have unique clues you can write down on your investigation sheet as you study the exhibit. Once you exit the crime scene, you will view a panel of photos to help you get a closer view of possible clues. The scientific part is next in your experience where you visit two interactive lab areas with multiple stations for DNA and fingerprint analysis to touch screens and other lab equipment to test your findings. Once you have made inferences about your findings, you take a multiple choice test based on how you believe the crime happened followed by a video reenactment of what actual happened. Based on the worldwide popularity of the CBS hit, it is easy to see how CSI: The Experience is a visitor and family favorite. The marketing manager for CSI: The Experience, Ava Bahnam, has even said that their hands-on exhibit has inspired many guests to pursue a career in the CSI and forensics industry. Though Las Vegas is and will always be considered “the city of sin”, there is so much more to experience than the famous casinos, night clubs, and adult shows. Though, many visitors go to Vegas solely for the gambling and nightlife, when choosing to visit the entertainment capital of the world with your family, explore some of my favorite attractions to ensure an exciting vacation for everyone.

MAINTAINING POUNDS ALL YEAR AROUND BY: LATASHA EDMERSON

82

SUMMER HAS PASSED AND AUTUMN IS HERE HALLOWEEN IS SOON AND CHRISTMAS IS NEAR. WE ARE AT THAT TIME OF THE YEAR WHEN THE HOLIDAYS ARE BACK TO BACK AND THINGS USUALLY GET A LITTLE MORE HECTIC AND STRESSFUL. WITH TRAVELING TO SEE YOUR FAMILY, DASHING AROUND TOWN GETTING THOSE LAST MINUTE GIFTS, AND MENTALLY PREPARING FOR THOSE LONG AUTUMN AND WINTER DAYS, EATING HEALTHY IS MOST LIKELY THE LAST THING ON YOUR LIST. ASIDE FROM THE DELICIOUS FAMILY MEALS THAT WE ARE ALL DYING TO EAT, HAVING A HEALTHY MEAL SHOULD STILL BE A PRIORITY. WE WORK HARD IN THE SPRING TO GET A NICE TONED BEACH READY BODY FOR SUMMER SO WHY NOT MAINTAIN THAT WILLPOWER ALL YEAR AROUND? AMERICANS ARE MORE LIKELY TO GAIN ANYWHERE BETWEEN 2 TO 5 POUNDS BETWEEN SEPTEMBER AND EARLY JANUARY. IT MIGHT NOT SEEM LIKE THAT MUCH NOW BUT IT DOES ADD UP OVER TIME. THE AVERAGE THANKSGIVING MEAL CONSISTS OF TURKEY, STUFFING, HAM, A WIDE ASSORTMENT OF SIDE DISHES, CAKES, PIES AND OTHER TASTY TREATS. CHRISTMAS MENUS ARE USUALLY SIMILAR TO THANKSGIVING MEALS. WITH THOSE HOLIDAYS BEING ONLY A MONTH APART THAT CAN BE SOME SERIOUS INCREASED CALORIE CONSUMPTION. DURING THE HOLIDAYS EATING HEALTHY IS ALMOST NONEXISTENT SINCE IT’S THE SEASON OF DIVULGENCE. BUT IN LATER YEARS WITH OBESITY ON THE RISE AS WELL AS AWARENESS, WE’VE BEGAN TO STRIVE TO STOCK OUR SHELVES WITH HEALTHIER FOODS. AS WELL AS THE OPENINGS OF DOZENS OF ORGANIC FOOD CHAINS. SO AVAILABILITY FOR HEALTHIER FOODS HAS BECOME MORE WIDESPREAD. THERE ARE WAYS TO HAVE DELICIOUS MEALS AND STILL REMAIN HEALTHY. FOR INSTANCE, TRY SUBSTITUTING THE TRADITIONALLY PREPARED HAM OR TURKEY WITH TURKEY BREAST OR CHICKEN BREAST. SWAPPING FRIED SIDE DISHES WITH STEAMED RICE, FRESH VEGETABLES, FRESH SALAD, AND REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF HEAVY SEASONING AND SAUCES CAN HELP AS WELL. THE ALTERNATIVE DISHES CAN BE JUST AS TASTY AS THE FRIED DISHES. ALSO, DESSERTS CAN BE PREPARED WITH LESS SUGAR AND ICING OR SUBSTITUTED WITH FRESH FRUITS AND FROZEN YOGURTS. IN ADDITION TO THE MEAL, WE ARE ALSO MORE LIKELY TO INDULGE IN DRINKING WINES AND CHAMPAGNES. HOLIDAY PARTIES AND SOCIAL GATHERINGS ARE PEAKING AND UNWINDING WITH A DRINK WILL BE A MUST. WHETHER YOU ARE A SOCIAL DRINKER OR A MODERATE DRINKER, BEING RESPONSIBLE SHOULD ALSO BE THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR. NEVER TAKE A DRINK ON AN EMPTY STOMACH. THAT IS A SURE WAY OF GETTING THE MAXIMUM EFFECT OF ALCOHOL IN AN UNSAFE AMOUNT OF TIME. SIPPING SLOWLY ISN’T JUST A STYLE OF DRINKING, IT IS ACTUALLY A TECHNIQUE TO ALLOW YOUR BODY TO DIGEST AND ABSORB ALCOHOL AT A MORE REGULATED PACE. AS FAR AS SAFETY, KEEP A DESIGNATED DRIVER OR CALL A CAB, KNOW YOUR SURROUNDINGS AND NEVER LEAVE YOUR DRINK UNINTENDED NOT EVEN FOR A SECOND. SO NOW THAT YOU HAVE A FEW TIPS ON MAINTAINING A HEALTHY DIET AND DRINKING RESPONSIBLY DURING THE HOLIDAYS, YOU’LL BE SURE TO AVOID GAINING THOSE DREADFUL UNWELCOMED POUNDS AND REDUCE YOUR RISK OF BEING INVOLVED IN AN UNNECESSARY ACCIDENT. MOST IMPORTANTLY EAT GOOD, DRINK GOOD, AND ENJOY YOURSELF DURING THE HOLIDAYS.
