letter from the editor : At the beginning of this year The G.O.O.D.S. Magazine lost not just a driving force of our publication, but a member of our family, Ken Williams a well-known and respected man within the Photography world. Ken played a big part in the San Diego fashion and art scene devoting his time not just to the traditional fashion scene but to encouraging and developing new talent. He was a versatile and creative individual who was not only inspiring but also had a bit part the revival and future of The Goods Magazine. I initially had the opportunity to meet Ken and Connie in 2011 and my first impression of him was that he was an extremely knowledgeable in the fashion industry as well as having a huge part in the photography world. I found it easy to communicate and we feed off of each other’s creative ideas. Ken and Connie played a major role in the production and publication of the January 2012 issue and brought the idea of the Goods Girls to life. If I had to choose a defining moment within our relationship and work together that stands out most when remembering Ken it would have to be the first Boutique run we collaborated on. It was a gorilla style shoot of boutique runs up and down 5th Avenue of the San Diego Gaslamp district. We were armed with our models in hair and makeup, a stylist, his photography equipment and a creative goal. Ken and Connie made a huge impact on me as an individual due to the strength of their relationship as well as his inspiration and belief in my creative ideas; he was the fuel to my creative fire. After having met with and interacting with Ken I came to the realization that not only is ken a versatile individual who is extremely down to earth and talented, he is a people person and can hang with the best of them. He gave his best in anything and every event that he was involved in and automatically took me under his wing to put me in touch with the right networks to establish the growth and presence of the Goods. I remember once asking Ken his thoughts on a must have feature in the publication and out of everything in the industry he suggested House of Lies because. In his opinion Don Cheadle was most relatable to me as a creator due to our similar personality types and style. He suggested the show and gave me plenty of words of wisdom about adjusting and excepting the aspect surrounding the constructive criticism in the industry. His influence has humbled me as an entrepreneur and put me into a realistic light surround the vision and growth of my publication. I didn’t just meet a man that helped with the magazine but someone who developed me as a person. I, we, lost such an amazing man one thing that I have come to realize is that we must all appreciate what we have while it is present, do not take for granted anything that can be lost. Appreciate one another and take the time to stop and smell the roses. Knowing and losing Ken was bitter sweet because everything he did, was, and encompassed had such a huge impact on me. The entire bullshit aside Ken Williams was an amazing man, who put forth the utmost effort in every avenue and venture he involved himself in. I am honored to pay 110% tribute where it is due and not as any fabrication of my admiration or exaggeration loss but because it’s just a fact. He was an influential individual who always and forever be remembered, respected and be a part of The G.O.O.D.S. family in spirit through the master pieces he left behind.

Who’s Out and About: At the 2013 Academy Awards, black and white ensembles and one shoulder shimmering gowns were the theme of the night. The diva look was rockin’ it, and Jennifer Hudson was the Diva of the night. She looked stunning in a midnight blue Roberto Cavalli gown. Her hair was sleek, her body was slim and she blew everyone away with her performance of You’re Gonna Love Me. We did, babe, we did. Anne Hathaway, in Prada, sported her short do that was more sculpted ala the popular Vidal Sassoon styles of long ago. Hallie Barry looked great- but the same. Same style of dress, same hair. Jennifer Lawrence, the hit of the evening both for her gown and her trip on her way up to grab her award, floated on a cloud of Dior and was a smash.
What’s In, What’s Out: Bangs, bangs and more bangs. Say so long to a hint of bangs framing your face, and say hello to tons of fringe. Michelle Obama sported a curtain on her forehead as she handed out the Oscar for best picture. Jennifer Hudson premiered her long, straight hair with heavy bangs on the red carpet. Celebs like Olivia Wilde, Alexa Chung and others are getting into the groove and sporting this rocker chic style. Hail to Zooey Deschanel who began this fun tend. No longer child’s play, a fringe of bang down to the eye is sexy. Upcoming Trends: Bandage dresses aren’t exactly upcoming, but are still en trend. The focus on this style of dress is silky, sleek and body hugging. It encourages an hourglass figure which is all the rage. You can dress it up for a classy look, or wear a more daring style to enhance your own personal sexy style. These dresses are just plain hot and hug every single curve of the body. They have a V neckline, accentuate the bust and are made of a spandex, nylon or rayon. You can wear them anywheregoing shopping or going out on the town. You can’t help but feel and look sexy in one of these numbers. Cool Places to Shop: For really fun fashions head on over to Free People. Free People began with a goal to help nurture the young people who lived and shopped in the Philadelphia area where they first began. They wanted to encourage a free feeling in fashion and the choices women made in their clothes. Their focus is on a theme of femininity, courage and spirit,
which reflects in their contemporary fashions. Their clothes have a stamp on creativity, self-confidence, individuality, a romantic flair, or even being a tomboy. They have gorgeous tunics, pullovers, jeans, jackets, shorts, dresses and skirts with Asymmetrical hemlines and tomboy boots. Everything you can imagine. With 80 or so boutiques across the nation, they are gaining in popularity. They have wholesale showrooms in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. You can even order online. Our Fave Product of the Month: We’ve always loved MAC products and Rihanna. And now to our utter delight, she has signed with them to collaborate on their cosmetics. Rihanna hit the nail on the head when she called the offer a “no brainer.” Obviously. Both are the coolest at what they do and to combine the two will be magical. Color is the focus of their collaboration and one of the first products to be released will be RiRi Woo- a ruby red MAC lipstick. The company allowed her free rein in the decision making process when selecting colors, makeup textures and packaging. Look for the products to make its debut right around her May Diamonds Tour concert dates. (Can we say smart marketing?) MAC will be right there with her and is rumored to open up a shop on her first night to show off their line. MAC has always had some of the best lipstick colors around and we bet Rihanna’s influence will only make them even more smashing. “I’ve been using MAC on tour for such a long time it was a natural fit for me,” she recently said. “My makeup looks, my fashion looks… they help me to express myself as an artist. I think it helps people to understand me or my mood, my story.” We just can’t get enough of Rihanna and now, can’t wait for the her unique stamp on the MAC line.

Jennifer Lawrence’s Award Season Fashions
Up to the Oscars...
D
uring this year’s 85th annual Academy Awards, Jennifer Lawrence earned the Best Actress statuette for her performance in “Silver Linings Playbook.” But the road to Oscar gold was also paved with plenty of opportunities to impress film and fashion critics alike. From the Screen Actors Guild Awards to the BAFTAs, and from the LA Film Critics Association Awards to the Golden Globes, the “Hunger Games” star has increased her game in the style stakes.
“Last time was comfort,” the 22-year-old said of her look for last year’s Oscar ceremony. “This year, I’m like, ‘Suck it up, wear a corset.’ I am going to go for fashion this time.” Lawrence did not disappoint, either, wearing a Dior gown that she literally tripped over on her way to accept the coveted Oscar, creating a picturesque moment that almost resembled an high-fashion advertisement. But one lovely stumble will not distract from J-Law’s famously fabulous fashions of the last few months. Let’s take a look back at some of her best looks during award season:

by Alejandrina Aragon When it comes to local fashion in San Diego, CA. there is one important phrase that explains the style here within our community, which defines our city’s Fashion trends, and that is, Stylish Versatility. There are many local designers that have a variety of styles from Vintage Boutiques, to surf wear, Club wear to High fashion you name it. San Diego hasn’t always been considered a big part of the fashion industry but it is putting itself of the map with all the creativeness and versatility that local San Diegans have to offer. There is one local new brand that I have in mind that I believe completely embodies that idea about our locals making imprints in the fashion world thru creativity and persistence in something they are passionate about. Ducqets clothing, which was recently established and trademarked in 2012, is making a huge impact within the local fashion community and has popularized with locals rather quickly. I recently had the amazing opportunity of interviewing the man behind the brand. Tony Rivera aka Dago Ducqets is the owner and founder of Ducqets clothing. Dago explained that his brand was started as a young entrepreneurial company, which he chose to represent the struggle. He shared that Ducqets was chosen as the name due to it being the old English term for original gold currency. He quoted “The gold that the System has taken from us that we need back!” Dago Ducqets admits that prior to Ducqets clothing he has not had any affiliation with fashion, simply a passion for it. He grew up between San Diego and Anaheim, Ca. where he graduated as class of 07 and attended Junior College for General Education with focus on Business. When I asked Dago what fashion meant to him he shared that he believes fashion is huge and different for everyone, he said it is a form of self-expression and admits style is the key. Take for instance his own style when asked to explain his personal style he said he is definitely a mood dresser. It is just dependent on the day for this creative and talented designer. He shared that he is very experimental with fashion wearing a variety of colors and trends himself. He shared that his first attempt at creativity through fashion was in junior high when he would make sweaters with stencil designs and spray painting on them that he would sell to his friends at school. He was always interested in what he had to offer in the fashion world.
He mentioned that San Diego’s fashion scene is really stepping up in the industry and he believes that Ducqets will be able to keep up, as it is becoming a movement. The general fashion crowd that has gravitated toward his brand includes the skate community, Hip Hop community, Hipsters, MMA athletes and locals ranging in ages from approximately 8 years of age and up. Dago Ducqets is also planning on coming out with a kids line and women’s line within the next few months to a year max. He shared that we can look forward to the kid’s line being more characteristic, fun and appealing to the kids and the women’s line will be very versatile with the style and more feminine appealing specifically to a variety of women’s styles. His design process is very creative and he pulls his ideas from a variety of channels including different things he sees going about his day. He mentioned that his brand currently has a wide array of items to choose from including T shirts, V necks, Crew shirts, Beanies, Hats, Hoodies, Back packs, Bags, Skate gear and more. He has a group of graphic designers and artists that he works with to assist him in the process of putting all the ideas into effect. Many other clothing lines such as Diamond, Crooks, and other up and coming designers inspire him greatly. He mentioned that his inspiration and goal in becoming a fashion designer and getting his label out there is to share that it’s more than just a clothing brand; it is representative of a common struggle. The logo, which is a bat and crow bar, crossed with a D for Ducqets represents not letting anything get in the way of making it. If you got to pry your way in, bat your way in, don’t let anyone get in your way of your goal just go and get it. Dago admits that he loves and appreciates the whole creative process that comes along with being a designer from beginning stages of digital design and freehand design sketching to the completed product. Dago likes leaving his Ducqets fashion lovers guessing about what is coming next, from the clothing brand. He loves to use prints and is coming out with several of his own that we can look forward to in the near future. Dago admits that when he put his brand out promotionally it caught on quicker than he expected which rushed the process, now he is trying to keep up. Dago is definitely doing a great job with keeping up with the demands of being a new Clothing Brand owner. Ducqets clothing is currently available online @ ducgets.com is the official website which is linked to the online store. For more information on this upcoming local brand you can also stay informed by liking Ducqets Clothing on Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/ DUCQETS or by friend requesting Dago himself @ https://www.facebook.com/dago.ducqets, fallow the Ducqets Clothing Movement on Twitter @ https://twitter.com/DUCQETS, via Instagram @ http://instagram.com/ducqetsbrand and don’t forget to stop by the Ducqets Boutique now officially open for business located locally @ 2488 Main St. Suite E Chula Vista, Ca. 91910 open Monday – Saturday from 10am to 7pm. Ducqets clothing offers stylish duds at affordable prices without compromising the product. Ducqets is definitely making an impression within the community and is branching out to the LA areas as well as making its way up the coast. Dago is open to ideas from creative minds and customers, anyone who has ideas or wants something that Ducqets has yet to offer is welcomed to make suggestions through Facebook. Ducqets clothing has something for everyone and I know I myself can’t wait to see what else comes from this upcoming brand and local business.

accessorize & surprise By Angela Soberanes
As fashion shows come to an end and runway trends hit stores, top designers bring out their Spring Fling Fashion Accessories for all to follow with help from The G.O.O.D.S Magazine. Outside, flowers are blooming in San Diego and springtime weather is approaching, which means it’s time to shop for this season’s most tasteful totes and must-have shoes and jewelry pieces. Your accessories should tell a story of their own, express your individualism and compliment an outfit. This spring is all about statement neckpieces and cuffs, not-sohigh heels and some chunky heels, as well as fun and flirty handbags.
accessories a la mode
Top designers like Dolce and Gabana chose decorative earrings with tassels and gold coins influenced by the ethnic cultures of the world. Basket woven bracelets and gold knuckle rings adorned every finger on Balenciaga models on the runway, so do not be shy to show off more than one while you are texting to draw attention to your hands. Dannijo Spring 2013 showcased antique silver with decorative jade and colored stones for a vintage yet sophisticated accent piece. Another top brand to look for is The2Bandits, whose 2013 spring accessory lookbook has everything you need to make a subtle yet distinct impression. A used antique gold and brass in their open cuffs brings out a rustic but refined look to any casual outfit and the neck-ties in the line can make any plain white tee look hip. Earcuffs are a new decorative piece that everyone should try. Fun floral pieces have been seen on celebrities on the red carpet this award season. Shop Libertystyle. com. Another trend to look for in any store is a bold gold or silver chest plate or neckpiece like the Jean Paul Gaultier choker. It surely makes a statement on the runway but can be wearable above any LBD or everyday dress shirt.

Shop for obscure bracelets as well in order to change the standards in the average cuff. Decorative uses of animal charms like birds, feathers, insect, snakes, and skull charms are a must, just pick out the things that interest you the most. Look for more influences at Michael Kors, Rock&Republic, and the ever-so-daring “Rainbow Warrior” by Sea of Bees to get a taste of what spring has sprung.
bags galore
From handbags, to side purses and clutches, fashion designers have a standard structured bag that can come in many color, even Clear! Gucci has an adorable transparent clutch in different pastels with a plexiglass finish that is unique and glamorous. Match it with anything because it is clear, the new black. Marc Jacobs and Burberry have also gone see thru in their new lines this spring. Color blocking has been a big hit with designers like Prada and Fendi who use different colors and geometric shapes. Louis Vuitton’s checkerd bags have arrived in more colors for this season. Black and white is everywhere as well in angular shapes and cubes. Look for
bags with dimension like Fendi Sp. 2013 and steer clear from frumpy lose hanging bags that will cramp your style. A well designed Dior will be worth the splurge for it will hold up for this season and be a staple in your closet forever. Look for top handle bags that are outside the norm of the usual box shaped bags to add a different motif to your ensemble. Don’t be scared to try graphic bags that go with anything or patchwork snake-skin bags for a sssexy style at night. If your ensemble is casual-chic, a statement bag will certainly set it off. Bold colors and chains will give the right edge to your look for day and night.

Now that the cold weather is taking its’ leave, Spring blossoms with strappy sandals, wild wedges, and chunky heels. On the runway this season, however, many designers like LV have shortened their shoe giving women a rest. Thank You! Fun flats and short-but-chic heels have stepped into this year’s Spring line, kicking six inch heels to the curb. Marni Sp. 2013 offers a perfect array of all that is sandals and wedges to model by when shopping. Being true to who you are is an important concept when shoe shopping but you need to take a risk. Be eclectic and sexy when it comes to your shoes because they can make or break an entire outfit. Strappy sandals and leather woven gladiator sandals by Nine West’s Vintage America in Bolden are affordable for any price range and will look so sexy for a stroll down the beach. The new futuristic shape of heels may look too hard to walk in, but you can only know until you try it. Try the gold embellished ankle strap by Guiseppe Zanotti Sp. 2013 collection that offers the new sleek structure and metallic accent. Your shoes should show just how hard core you really feel. Find more at Shoerazzi.com. For a night out on the town, paint the town red in Nicholas Kirkwood Sheer mesh bootie with black suede trim. It will certainly show off a longer and sleeker leg and nobody with be able to look past you. Everyone’s new year resolution should be to try something different. Don’t be basic, instead be bold and daring. Your accessories should make a statement and scream out loud just how fun you are.

In an age where so many people have decided that it’s better to just offer a selection and give it to customers quickly Lola Luna Boutique in Ocean Beach choses to keep that one on one daily interaction with their customers. Nestled along the main strip of Ocean Beach, less than a block away from the beach Lola Luna Boutique doesn’t just offer the basics, little black dresses, jeans, or heels that would make even your best friend green with envy. They give you something for every aspect of your style and life. One rack you will find vintage inspired day dresses for a day along the beach and next to it another that would be perfect for your cousin’s day wedding. As you move throughout the store you find clothes to inspire your inner rock star and the perfect skirt that allows you adventure into the rockabilly style without abandoning your Chanel Black inspired style.
can make sure that the great skinny jean they found they can secure even when they don’t have it right then and there to pay for. See it’s those small things that are going to keep us here in OB for the next five years. Little things that show that we aren’t just about sales but about our customers and making them feel great each time they walk out the door.” As the interview was wrapping up Kim turned to compliment a customer on the outfit she had on and offered a necklace to go with it for the next time she wore it. The girl thanked her and asked to see a pair of shoes as well to go with the necklace. Seeing the smile that crossed Kim’s face at the appreciation in the young girl’s voice would make anyone a believer. This fashion forward owner didn’t just love fashion or her boutique but genuinely loved and cared about her customers; it’s her passion.
Her passion that radiates through Lola Luna is what is going to keep this When asked about the customer experience in Lola Luna owner Kim John- pillar of the Ocean Beach community going for many more successful son stated, “We don’t just want you to come in and make a purchase, we years to come. want you to come in and leave feeling great about your style and knowing you bought something that makes you feel good.” “I originally went to school for interior design and always had a passion for fashion. In 2001 I decided that I wanted to have my own boutique. I knew that I wanted it to have the name Lola in it and was driving one night and saw the moon and was inspired.” Lola Luna lives up to its name providing a consistently changing selection that is handpicked by Kim regularly. “I go to Los Angeles regularly to shop for new clothes that don’t just inspire me or are on trend but I feel reflect my customers here in OB.” “I like knowing that my sense of style is helping others and I like being there to actually see my customers happy.” Watching Kim assist shoppers as they pass through the store looking for various items its apparent why her hands on approach to running the boutique has kept it going. A rebel in this day and age choosing not to have a website, eBotutique, or a strong social media presence Lola Luna prides itself on simply connecting and satisfying each customer daily and turning them into regulars. “I tried the website thing and found that it was just a large expense but time consuming. If I’m going to spend time on the boutique I want to do it IN the boutique where I can keep a feel for what my customers really want.” One look around the boutique and the fruits of Kim’s decision to not focus more on grass roots than viral marketing are more than sweet. “We get a lot of returning customers who we see in here very couple of weeks for something new and who trust our sense of style when they want something different.” In her own words Kim described The GOODS on Lola Luna as, “A variety in selection that isn’t just affordable but that’s personal. We also support our local designers and also try to support green fashion. Oh, I almost forgot we offer layaway. I know some people may think that is whatever but think about it, we are a small boutique that rotates selection in and out constantly and sometimes we don’t get something back in stock or in stock right away. The lay away option we give customers is so that they

good beauty
BODY sugaring
How much longer can we endure painful procedures in the name of beauty? There needs to be a time in our life when we finally say, “enough is enough!” As a licensed esthetician, I chose to specialize in hair-removal because it is a very popular treatment and a common concern that most women have. Hair always grows back after waxing, and leaves me with a constant rotation of repeat clientele. Yet, there came a point in my chosen profession when I became bored and rather disenchanted with waxing. There has to be a better way to remove hair without totally damaging the skin, while still remaining reasonably priced. What if there was actually a treatment that removed hair while benefiting the skin as well? I had always used a razor even after I learned how to wax. If you think about it, the waxing process is pretty barbaric: we dip the stick into a jar of molten wax spread it on your hair then we lay pieces of cloth over the wax and rip it off in the OPPOSITE direction of the hair growth. This leads to burns, irritation, lifted skin, bruises and ingrown hairs. Uhm, ouch! With this being said, may I introduce all of you to the world of “sugaring”? WHAT IS BODY SUGARING? Sugaring is the most natural way to remove hair. A truly progressive method of hair removal for all, body sugaring is becoming a popular choice of young women in America for all parts of the body. Body Sugaring is effective on all skin types and hair textures for both men and women of all ages. Additionally, not only does sugar have pure and natural ingredients (water, lemon juice, sugar and gum) -- it is also 100% sanitary and water dissolvable. The treatment will not burn, rip or stick to live skin cells, leaving skin feeling much less sensitive, but more silky, soft and healthy. The sugaring technique extracts hair in its natural direction of growth in the early stages, eliminating breakage, irritation, ingrown hairs and unnecessary discomfort while also exfoliating dead skin cells. An added bonus: your hair not need exceed 1/8 of an inch to be removed! With this being said, as soon as I learned how to “sugar”, I literally threw away all of my razors. I can do my own Brazilian and I often sugar my under arms and legs. The regrowth of hair is not very substantial; it’s actually become very sporadic after just a few treatments. This is coming from an esthetician who refused to use wax on herself and would succumb to shaving. NOT ANYMORE! Certified sugar practitioners are professionally trained and certified. They are committed to a high standard of service, helping you to make body sugaring a part of your monthly routine. The popularity is growing quickly as more and more people learn about the benefits of sugaring over other forms of hair removal. Please don’t just take my word for it -- ask your friends, check Yelp! Do your own research online to see if sugaring would benefit you. For more on Molly and her work check out: http://www.facebook.com/ashleyesti

21 and Over
Jack the Giant Slayer
21 and over is a Raunchy comedy about a straight A student trying to get into medical school. Jeff Chang, played by Justin Chon, has never been drunk, barely touched a woman, and is always trying to do the right thing. His best friends Casey, played by Skylar Astin, and Miller, played by Miles Teller, see this as a challenge. They think he should lighten up and takes him out on the town for a few drinks to celebrate his 21st birthday. Things get wild and crazy pretty quick. Casey and Miller have no clue how to handle the new Jeff and may end up ruining his life. If you loved Project X, then you will dig this. The movie opens March 1st, 2013.
Bryan Singer, the director of Superman Returns and X-men 1 and 2, lights up the screen with Jack the Giant Slayer. This is a classic tale being retold with a juicy twist. A young farmer named Jack, played by Nicholas Hoult, finds a beautiful princess trying to escape her kingdom. They accidently open a gateway to the world of Giants. The giants aren’t happy to know that humans are still alive and want to start a war. This becomes an adventure that is suitable for the whole family. The film opens March 1st, 2013.
March has turned into a decent movie month for low and high budget films. Some impressive and unforgetful films have been released during March Madness. Panic Room, 300, and Alice in Wonderland all graced the screen, entertaining the public at large. Will this trend follow suit? It looks so because this time, it has something for everyone.
Director Neils Arden Oplev brings us one of the best films of the year. Victor, played by Colin Farrell, is forced to work as an enforcer for an evil man that killed his wife and children. Beatrice, played by Noomi Rapace, blackmails him into helping her take down the man that wronged her. His boss believes that he is under attack by an unknown killer and wants Victor to figure out who it is so he can destroy him. From what I’m hearing this film is a must see and may even bring you to tears. The film opens March 8th, 2013.
This is a prequel to the world famous Wizard of Oz. The great wizard is just a simple town inventor named Oscar Diggs, played by James Franco. During a failed expedition he is transported to a strange world. There he finds unique and unimaginable creatures that give him the motivation to become the great and powerful Oz. However, there is someone who wants to stop him and send him back to where he came. This is a film that you can bring your kids and grandparents to see. The film truly fits all ages. It opens March 8th, 2013.

He has to regain the trust of his superiors while trying to save the President from certain death. The movie opens March 22nd, 2013.
Nell Sweetzer, played by Ashley Bell, was a victim of an exorcism caught on tape. She is found, traumatized, in the woods. Will there be anyone able to stop them before she loses her soul and puts everyone’s lives in jeopardy? The film also opens March 1st, 2013.
Continuing where the last one left off, the G.I. Joes are all framed and mostly destroyed by their own government. Zartan, played by Arnold Vosloo, is in disguise as the President of the United States and has all the world leaders under his control. It is now up to the last remaining G.I. Joe survivors to stop Zartan and Cobra before they completely take over the world. The film was pushed back for months to improve the 3D and special effects. Let’s hope they also improved everything else as well. The film opens March 29th, 2013
A different take on the body snatcher concept, The Host is about parasitic aliens possession the minds of their hosts. One human however, refuses to allow her soul to be taken over. She speaks to the alien in her mind and by luck, the alien agrees with her. Together, they set out on a mission to find her love ones, and to find an understanding between the two species. The film opens March 29th, 2013.
See you at the movies!

Super Lyrical West Coast Veteran MC Ras Kass Drops the anticipated album Barmaggedon, which is the Follow up to the Barmaggedon Mixtape. This project was released on January 18th 2013 via the rappers bandcamp page http://raskass.bandcamp.com/. This album is heavy with guest features that you will love from artist such as Kendrick Lamar, Talib Kweli and Too $hort . I don’t want to give away all the features on the album but those names alone should have you interested into what this MC has carved up for the masses. There are more than a few stand out tracks to me one of those tracks is
“Judas”On the Production side of this album a few producer names stuck out that I know 1) Focus 2) Klasic. This project is 18 tracks of Lyrics & Beats Fool (quoting the rapper off his website). There are also some skits on the album which are hilarious but set the temple for the upcoming song. In my opinion, this might be “Album of the Year” as far as lyrics go, this is that Raw, Ruff and Underground Hip Hop that everyone says they want. Do yourself the favor and support this project and continue to keep good Hip-Hop alive. My grading on this album 4.5 out of 5. by Earl Wilson
M U S I C Review Local Rapper Real J Wallace who is also the part of rap Group Brother Nature with Bam Circa 86, released his Coretta Scott EP in November 2012. Download this project at http://realjwallace. bandcamp.com/track/thejahfather-i-vii-coretta-scott-ep . The EP is 5 Tracks on a continuous Mix (this is the version that was provided on the rappers bandcamp). The Lyrics to the tile track “Coretta Scott” are written out on the bandcamp site. Real J Wallace lets you know where this EP is coming with quotes such as “The Martin Luther King free way is an inner state of Mind” and “Made to be listened to on Interstate 94 in San Diego, California”. And inspired by Coretta’s beauty,
“My model of a perfect woman”. Both quotes come from the rappers bandcamp. Real J Wallace recently performed this EP at Graffiti Beach, where there was a hard copy’s of the project with a different cover art and he also brought special musical and art guest for this project. The 5 Tracks provided does not give me a lot to do a review on so I will have to give this a 3.5 out of 5. Do yourself the favor and check out the artist bandcamp, listen to it and download the other material at http:// realjwallace.bandcamp.com/album/the-j-hfather-of-so-u-l-cal Real J Wallace also check out the album Real J. Artist: Corrine Bailey Rae Album: Corrine Bailey Rae Label:EMI Genre: Neo-Soul British songbird Corrine Bailey Rae’s self-titled debut album has a charming ode to old-school soul with modern instrumentation. Artist: Le Kid Album: Oh Alright! Label:Roxy Recordings Genre: Pop Teenage sugar rush, ABBA-esque pop melodies and double entendres that Katy Perry would even raise an eyebrow to after hearing. Standout Songs: America, Escape Artist: LaToya Luckett Album: Lady Love Label: Capitol Genre: R&B Everything that a modern day R&B album needs, this album has it: great production, relate-able concepts and impressive vocals. All the swag you need without needing to say the word swag. Standout Songs: Lady Love, Love Rollercoaster Artist: Lights Album: The Listening Label: Sire Genre: New Wave The dreamy and surreal sythesizers fragrantly pull you into this sense of euphoria bliss. Escapism is the word that comes to mind while listening to this album. Standout Songs: Face Up, Second Go, The Listening
Artist: Marina and the Diamonds Album: Electra Heart Label: 679, Atlantic Genre: ElectroPop A concept album usually feels forced or unauthentic, however Electra Heart has the current electronic-obsessed music trends as a mere backdrop to soften the blow of her chilling and bittersweet lyrics. It’s much easier to shallow with a spoon full of sugar. It is the kind of album Katy Perry should be recording. Standout Songs: Primadonna, Power and Control Artist: Michelle Williams Album: Unexpected Label: Music World/Columbia Genre: R&B/Pop Taking the dive into mainstream music isn’t the easiest for any artist, especially someone coming from the world of Gospel. Magically, Michelle falls into the clubready dance beats with ease. This album is very unexpected. (Bad Pun.) Best songs: Lucky Girl, Sick of it Artist: Simon Curtis Album: 8Bit Heart Label: Independently Released Genre: Pop A frantic and delicious album of electronic spiced pop music with a concept of an android looking for love. Which is just a metaphor for ourselves because...aren’t we all looking for love? Standout Songs: Brainwashed, Don’t Wanna Be Alone Artist: Vanessa Carlton Album: Harmonium Label: A&M Genre: Classical Pop Though Vanessa’s music endeavors have been rather under the radar after her debut, her sophomore album was truly epic masterpiece. With her fresh and infectious vocals that dance on every single key from the piano, the album is a work of art. Some of the best piano compositions ever recorded, Vanessa is an incredible singer, songwriter and musician. Needless to say, no matter your taste, this album is sure to satisfy. Standout Songs: Annie, Afterglow, Private Radio

the
Forever Marriage by Ann Bauer Review by Jessica Krantz From the publisher’s description: “The Forever Marriage is at its heart a mystery, and the mystery is what, exactly, the nature of Carmen and Jobe’s marriage might have been. Page-turning and irreverent, The Forever Marriage is a compelling examination of a relationship and of a woman facing up to her imperfect past. It merits comparison to the best work of Anne Tyler, Elizabeth Berg, and Alice Sebold.” Ok, so I have mixed feelings about this book. The concept is good -- a woman falls into a marriage she isn’t passionate about, then feels trapped and obligated for so long, that when she becomes widowed she feels... free? Alone? Guilty? Still trapped? But it’s also more real and more emotionally honest than most books I’ve read. It makes the book both enjoyable and unsettling at the same time. I think part of the reason I’m so on the fence is that my underwhelming emotional response is lacking, perhaps because I don’t have enough years in life to totally empathize with Carmen, the main character, who is a self-centered protagonist and comes off as a real bitch sometimes. Even her best friend seems to think so. She doesn’t quite love her husband -- but in some ways, she does, even if that love happens to emanate out of a sense of responsibility or duty. She is not emotionally attached to her lover, but uses him to make up for the lack of sexual activity in her marriage. You may not respect Carmen or like anything about her at first, but hang in there. She’s endearing one moment and repulsive the next. It seems that her vices are the only methods she has to cope with the dissatisfying consequences of her virtues. However, I’ve never read a story quite like this and that is one reason why I did love this book, it is an artfully constructed story about the complexities of relationships and love. Yes, it deals with cancer, adultery, a child with disabilities, but I didn’t find it depressing or uplifting, but rather realistic in the aspect that all of these main characters, Carmen, the late Jobe, the lover Danny, and the mother-in-law Olive, as well as the boy with Down’s Syndrome, Luca, are all more than they seemed at first glance and became more endearing by the end of the book. We all know Carmen’s and Jobe’s and it is interesting to think what happens when two such different people marry and create a family and life together. People are drawn to their opposites and marry for all sorts of reasons, many of which are completely unaware of their choice, as they are young and lack the understanding of who they are. All said, this is a tough read - not because it’s poorly written (it’s not) or uninteresting (it’s not); but because it pierces through to the truth. It is best read by those who have weathered many of their own storms, successfully and otherwise and by those who enjoy branching out from their regular reading comfort zone.

By AJ Walden It’s the beginning of a New Year, so the gym is getting a little more crowded and people are reaching out to friends and family in an effort to be more in touch. Well, guess what… in about two month or so, the gym will be back to normal and your only way of communication with your friends or family may be through social networks. It’s the same Resolutions for most Americans every year. I’m going to lose weight. I’m going to spend more time with family. I’m going to quit smoking. I’ll ditch the relationship that I know is baggage. Yeah, we’ve heard it all. Save it. Spare yourself and me as well. It’s a New Year so the best thing is to be honest with yourself. How many times have you honestly said, “I’m going to do (add whatever you’ve said here) this year?” Or my favorite, “2013 is my year!” Didn’t you say that in 2012, 2011? Now I’m not saying that you can’t have set backs or even just be optimistic. However, I challenge you to be realistic in 2013. If you’ve been eating unhealthy for all your life similar to me for whatever reasons please don’t try and go vegan tomorrow. It’s not realistic. Take myself for instance, I want to be healthier & lose some weight. Yet, I have been in an ongoing affair with Lil Debbie, Lays & Breyer’s Ice Cream for quite some time. It’s that serious. I am not silly enough to believe that I can break up with them overnight. It will take commitment, and setting some realistic goals. Hell might even need some therapy but that’s for another column. 2013 is all about New Beginnings. Start by making small goals & even more so realistic ones. Fitness… For those of you who want to get more fit, don’t run to the gym and sign up for that 1 yr long membership with the over priced trainer. Instead, start out by walking in your neighborhood or a local park. Get your body used to actually doing something. Ask some friends to join you. Once you get a routine going and you have been consistent then you can join the gym. Once again it’s about being real with yourself. If you can’t commit to taking walks then I doubt you’ll go the gym. I’m just saying. Finances… You want to get your finances in order and get Uncle Sam off your back. How are you going to do that when you are constantly spending? You can’t. Now some financial guru may tell you to save or spend. If you are used to buying clothes or every gadget that comes out, you have wean yourself off. Ladies, instead of buying 2 pocket books & 3 pair of shoes that cost more than your car, try to get either one but not both. Fellas, you don’t have to buy every iPhone & gadget as soon as it comes out. Wait, a few months and find it online for cheaper. Or for every new item that you buy, you should give something away. Since, these are my thoughts let me vent for a quick minute. There is no reason why your clothing should cost more than your car note. Unless your pockets are stacked, that’s plain madness. Use wisdom people. Don’t go broke trying to keep up with the Joneses. Reconnecting…

I don’t have this issue but lots of people want to reconnect with family for the New Year. First off ask yourself why? No, that wasn’t a typo. Why? Some of you haven’t spoke to your family in years because they are toxic. Every time there is a get together, there is nothing but negative energy and you are left feeling drained and worthless. If this is you then you need to let them go. Some people are better off loved from a distance. It may hurt but you’ll be better off in the long run. On the flip side if you are the jet setter every holiday with your friends and you forget to call home or even visit, you need to get that in order. Oh, and sending greetings via Facebook doesn’t count. Don’t insult your sibling by simply leaving a HBD (Happy Birthday) on his/her Facebook wall and not calling or sending a card. If you truly want to reconnect with the people you love and who love you back, reach out. It’s that simple. It’s not even complicated. Get off the internet and visit them at home and go out to lunch. And stay away from the phone while you are reconnecting. That is so rude to spend time with someone while being attached to your phone. I’m still working on this. I’m a work in progress don’t mind me. Career… Someone reading this is at a standstill career wise. Let me help you. Why are you still working for someone who doesn’t appreciate you or what you bring to the company? Now, before I go any further let me clarify I am not saying quit your job with nothing to fall back on. That’s crazy talk in this economy, not the brightest move. If you are dreading going to work for whatever reason, do something about it. If that means a change in career, then go for it. What’s holding you back? If you have a passion then maybe it’s time you get from behind the desk and start pursuing it. Hate your boss? Well then become your own boss. Once again please be realistic. Everyone doesn’t become Bill Gates or Steve Jobs overnight.
You may need to get some new skills or even take a few classes for that new career move. If you want it bad enough, you will do it. You’re only miserable because you aren’t doing anything about it. Last but not least LOVE… Hopefully, you read my last article and you didn’t bring that dead relationship into the New Year. Since, I know some of you are hard headed, I will address you first. It wasn’t working last year and guess what… it won’t work this year. You overdosed on Lifetime Movie Network and romantic movies and you are waiting for something that isn’t coming. You can’t change someone. They change when they are ready. Not a minute sooner. Swallow that pill and you may find the soul mate you are looking for. For the love birds all around 2013, bring something new to the relationship. Rekindle that fire that may or may not be a little dim. Show your appreciation for your significant other by leaving them notes around the house or taking them to lunch on their break at work. Do some of the things that made them fall in love with you in the first place. Remember, it’s the small things that matter the most. Get back to loving people. 2013 is all about New Beginnings and being real with YOU. I’m out and once again, Pardon My Thoughts. AJ Walden @JusticeK33per (Twitter)

Kameron Dash Feature
Kameron Dash is a stunning young and talented model from Sacramento, Ca. She attended Franklin High School and her interests include makeup, fashion and family. Kameron is of mixed race being a beautiful ethnic combination of Black, White, Puerto Rican, Indian, German and Irish. Kameron Dash was first introduced to the world of fashion and modeling professionally 4 years ago. When asked how it all started Kameron Dash admitted it was for the pure love of it. She shared that she became an urban model for the financial aspects of it however she is interested in getting back into the fashion side of the industry due to that being one of her main interests. I asked Kameron if she had any designers or fellow models that she appealed to most. She admits that she is funny when it comes favorites due to the fact that she likes what she likes and doesn’t always know names, she simply has an appreciation for amazing work. When it comes to staying up on trends, Magazines like Vogue and Glamour are Kameron’s go to’s as well as makeup mags and beauty blogs. When asked to explain her style Kameron says she classifies it as a little on the bi-polar side since she can go from being laid back casual to dressy and classy which she admits she loves just as much. She shared that she does the majority of her shopping online and abroad since she loves San Diego however feels the local fashion is a little more laid back than she prefers for her personal style. Some of Kameron’s favorites shopping destinations include LA and NYC. Kameron Dash shared that what makes her hometown of Sacramento’s fashion unique is that was where the tomboy side of her originated, which is still very much a part of her, she admits however she does like to explore versatility in fashion. As far as other affiliations within the fashion industry outside of the modeling realm of things Kameron Dash has had experience within the Fashion industry having put together a fashion show in the past, she also aspires to eventually get into the design side of the industry. What Kameron finds rewarding about modeling is the confidence that exudes and gratification that comes with having an amazing shot. The aspects of the industry she admits to not being so fond of are the politics that are involved with the industry. Kameron Dash’s advice that she has to offer to aspiring models is “Stay true to yourself… Whatever that may mean to you.” Kameron shared on a personal note that she feels modeling has changed aspects of her life because it has helped her to become a better person by allowing herself to always take the good with the bad and try to see a positive outcome in any given situation. When discussing how she prepares for a photo shoot, Kameron stated that the preparation for a shoot depends upon the type of photo shoot and concept ideas involved, therefor the process could vary for each individual photo shoot. When working with different photographers, Kameron shared that listening to the photographer is a must because they see things from the other side of the lens, which is a whole other perspective. She says that Photographers styles vary, for example Ziggy is very artistic in his photography style.
I asked Kameron to define what she classifies as a stylish man or woman? Her response was, “Is there a difference? What makes them stylish is their own sense of fashion, because everyone is different and creative in their own way.” When Kameron was asked, out of all of the photographers she has been shot by which shot was her personal favorite and why, she said it would have to be the Nick Saglimbeni and Ziggy shoot because their visions where so different from most. She shared these photos are available for viewing @ bazvis.com. Kameron also mentioned that her favorite fashion photographer is a friend by the name of Ray who has a line called Milk Money LTD because he is extremely creative and designs the pieces himself. When it comes to fashion and modeling Kameron feels fashion is an art, a way of life. She states that what distinguishes a good model from a bad one is the models habits and personality and what distinguishes a good photographer from a bad one is angles, lighting and personality. The one thing that Kameron admitted to disliking as a part of the industry is that although it has come so far, there is still a complex that you have to be a size zero to walk the runway. Kameron Dash is constantly building and adding to her modeling portfolio and has several projects that’s she is working on. As she mentioned before she is currently pursuing the fashion side of the industry. There will be more to look forward to from this talented and versatile model in upcoming months. by Alejandrina Aragon

by AJ Walden Julio Fonyat, a third generation photographer has most definitely made his family proud. His work speaks volumes. From breath taking views of surfers on waves to heartfelt photos of couples on their wedding day, all his photos carry an esthetical beauty. Julio was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. For the past twelve years, he’s called San Diego home. Julio is also the owner of Fonyat Weddings. For 8 years he’s been the man behind the lenses of thousands of engagement and wedding photos all across the world. He grew up with both his grandfather and father being photographers, so naturally he never saw any other profession for himself he said. He recalls being a youngster going through thousands of negatives with his mom. It sparked something in him and the rest is history. Being a lover of nature and having the beach as his second home, Julio started out taking pictures of the ocean and surfers on waves. He loved being able to catch the beauty of the water but he eventually got bored with that. Due to the fact that at times he would have to wait for the perfect shot, because nature isn’t always in sync with photographers. In 2004 while in college, Julio was an assistant to a wedding photographer and he realized this could be his niche. Eight years later with thousands of wedding shots, I can say I agree. Julio realizes that weddings can be a trying time for women everywhere which is why he wants his clients to become his friends as well. “They come into my home. I want them to get comfortable with me so we can have the best working relationship. I want them to trust me as an artist but more so as a friend.” Due to the great energy, and passion for his work, Julio hasn’t had any Bridezillas. If you ask any photographer, they will tell you that their camera is their baby. They love to brag about that piece of equipment. Julio used everything from digital SLR Canons to Rolleiflexs & Polaroids. Yet, his most prized possession is his Dad’s camera that he still uses to this day. He refers to his Leicas M3 as “The Ferrari” of cameras. It’s on his desk and it’s the first thing he sees when he wakes up and goes to bed. Jose Bina Foyat was an impressive artist whose Fine Artwork is still being sold after his untimely passing at 40. Julio likes to describe his work as Fine Art. “Though I’ve never sold any of it as Fine Art, that’s where I’m leaning towards.” He is surely on his way to following in his dad’s footsteps in the Fine Art department. His photography has taken him all across the world. Seeing places he’s only dreamed of. He has been to Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, China and several other countries as well. He also shoots weddings in Brazil for his high profile clients and others every year.
Julio recently returned from a month long road trip from San Diego to Brazil. Two of his friends, who are surfers and himself took three vehicles, bucket lists and hit the road. They hit 15 different countries where they explored, hit the waves and crossed a few things off their bucket lists. Julio wanted to shoot a random wedding. So while in Cartagena, Columbia he reached out to a fellow photographer shooting a wedding where he asked if he could shoot the bride and groom as well. After seeing his portfolio, they agreed. That was something he was able to scratch off his bucket list. Julio enjoys exploring the world by traveling and seeing all that life has to offer in his eyes and through his camera. When asked if he had any advice for aspiring photographers Julio said, “WORK HARD. Don’t give up. Learn how to use video because it will be necessary soon. Get inspired. Get an internship. Stage your own shoots. Hang around people who do what you want to do or become.” He also stated that if he could do it all over again, he would have gone to college for business or marketing instead of photography. “I was sure I would be a photographer but I just assumed I’d work for someone. I didn’t know how to balance the books or do any about the business stuff once I became a business owner. Go to college for something other than just your talent. You always need something to fall back on.” Julio spends his days and nights running his business along with his wife Priscilla who handles all the financial aspects of the business. Julio said, “I can tell how busy I am but never how much money I make. That’s her department.” They have dogs who alongside his cameras are the only kids for now. He hopes to continue making couples happy for years to come with his photos. For more info on Julio Fonyat and his work check out:

#1 People Watching
#6 Improv
I’m sure this may have never crossed your mind but people watching can be a great first date. Not just for comedians who like to make fun at people. Head over to Mission Beach Boardwalk or Balboa Park and watch the people surrounding you. Find the person who grabs your attention the most and guess what profession they are in. Or my favorite, find a couple who is talking and guess what they are talking about. Turn it into role play.
The first date is made to get to know each other but why not see how well you already know one another. So switch roles with one another and act out different scenes as if you were your date and see if they can finish by doing what you would do. It’s funny seeing how well you think you know someone and you can be humorous at the same time.
*FYI (Try not to be so obvious if people know you are watching them, they may get annoyed and get offended.)
Go to a local toy store or book store and find things that remind you of your childhood. You can even switch it up and try to guess which toys your date had as a youngster. Grab that Etch a Sketch and show those skills. If you are passionate with literature, head to the book store and do the same thing. Either way, walking down memory lane can be fun.
#2 Food Truck Hunt For the foodies and food critics, you can’t go wrong with exploring your palate and senses with the Food Trucks that can be found all over San Diego. Whether you’re looking for fine cuisine or just some junk food, a Food Truck is a sure way to get it. This will also allow you and your date to explore the city in a different way. #3 Give Back I know it’s not a typical first date but what better way than to see the good in a potential date by doing community service or feeding the homeless. You serve others and it is sure to come back to you. #4 Trading Places Ok, so who says you can’t dream and be someone else on a date? Get dressed in your finest clothes and go the nearest luxury dealership and test drive a Ferrari or whatever you like. Then call up a high end realtor & go house hunting in La Jolla or wherever you please. Why not? You only live once, go for it! *FYI (Some luxury car dealerships may require you to call ahead for a test drive.) #5 Progressive Meal Instead of the typical dinner date, divide it into 3 dates. Find three of your favorite restaurants in the city all within walking distance if possible. Have drinks at the first one, maybe a local bar or lounge. Get your appetizers at the next place. Then last but not least have dinner & dessert if you choose at your final destination. You can get to know each other as you walk from place to place and it will give you time to walk off that food until you are ready for the next.
#7 Memory Lane
#8 Dive In Theatre If you are in the San Diego area and you are a movie lover, relaxing by the pool and great drinks, head over to The Pearl Hotel in Point Loma. They have free weekly screenings of movies at their poolside lounge. It’s a great way to enjoy two different activities at the same time. *FYI (The pool is open for free to hotel guests and others with purchase of a drink.) Hope you try some of these dates and let me know if they worked out for you. - AJ Walden @JusticeK33per (Twitter)
sex lies skin : the other hole

by Brittany Marie Tonight the sex with you and your man is great. Better than great actually it is phenomenal. It may be because of the extra shot of patron or glass of wine that you had earlier or it may just be that he finally listened to you when you said to spend more time giving you oral before inserting himself in you. Either way tonight is probably going to go down as one of the best nights of sex you and your partner have ever had. Then it happens… He pulled out too far and instead of going back inside you, you feel his full force against… The other hole. Yes this moment is not only awkward but your reaction can either ruin the evening or keep the passion going and let’s face facts, you’re slightly stressed out. The bigger question remains, what should you do? My philosophy on this subject is pretty simple. If he gets the tip in roll with it and if he doesn’t say a few sexy words, reach down and guide him back inside you. I know the first part of what I said has the majority of you ladies even more anxious then when you first felt him on your butt but let me explain. First and foremost anal is not as taboo of a bedroom activity as it has been previously even in America. In European and Latin porn it has been standard for years now and in America it isn’t just becoming common place on most sites and sales it is becoming almost as popular as lesbians, big dicks, and threesomes. Ladies this isn’t something that weird bicurious men are whispering about anymore to secretly explore their sexuality it has become a common curiosity and appetite of heterosexual men. Considering what I just said lets add another dose of reality to the picture, you and your partner have already had a hypothetical conversation about this. In fact part of you may even think this may be his attempt to try it when you previously had brushed it off. Your partner may have engaged in it with his ex-girlfriend or the random tail that he was hitting before finally settling with you and then again he may just feel that comfortable with you he wants to experiment in what he considers a “safe environment.” Whatever his reasons were/are the look of shock and surprise on your face is unnecessary this situation isn’t that far-fetched to you. The last thing that you want to do is jerk back, call him a bastard, and totally kill the mood and injure your communication lines. As women I think that we forget men don’t appreciate harsh and polarized sexual rejection any more than we do. You wouldn’t like if while riding your man he just moved you off and asked, “What the hell are you doing?” The same goes when he slips to the wrong hole don’t over react it may damage the lines of healthy communication about your sex life or make him feel the need to suppress a desire he truly has leaving him an unaddressed sexual void. So in a matter of milliseconds you have gained your head and controlled your reaction now what? Right? From here it’s pretty simple. If the tip is already in the initial pain is over and the good news is it’s in. That being said go ahead and let him stroke a few times before you have him pull completely out this allows you time to breathe and adjust to actually see if you like it. Who knows you may actually find that you enjoy anal sex and it works for you. Now, if he doesn’t get inside trust me when I say some dirty talk and gentle hand direction back to the promised land will have him more concerned about the sexy comment you just said and how he feels going back inside you. You’re not done yet. When everything is said and done whether it is a few moments after climax, the next day, or next week you and your partner need to talk about whatever did happen. If you guys did have anal sex you need to discuss how you both felt about it and if it is an activity you want to continue to engage in going forward. Even if you didn’t you still need to talk about it to see if you do want to actually try it (or try it again) in a more controlled environment. Talking about it allows both of you to freely express how you felt, what you want, and make a decision together about where to go from the initial encounter with, “the other hole.” I know that this probably isn’t what you wanted a fellow woman telling you but then again that is what makes this different it’s about being real with the little lies we tell ourselves, getting comfortable with life in just our skin and most of all looking at sex differently. Ladies it’s not the end of the free world he just happened to slip into/towards “the other hole”.

OFficE daTiNg A Few Reasons Why Oil & Vinegar Do Not Mix

•
april 2013
by AJ Walden @JusticeK33per
To understand why oil and vinegar don’t mix, you have to understand their individual compositions. Vinegar is about 95 percent water, with just a small amount of acid and some other compounds. Oil is made up of fats. Many people believe that oil and vinegar don’t mix because they are of different densities. I say the same for business & pleasure.
Others simply ask you not to date people not directly over you (i.e. your boss) or another employee in the same department. Weigh the pros with the cons for yourself. I’ll give you a few scenario’s as to how things can go down. ...
Single But Not Interested. Ok, so you find out that he/she is single but you aren’t sure if they’re interested. Tread very lightly if you fall into this bracket. Sexual harassment & office gossip could be your fate if you aren’t successful. If there aren’t any sparks then move on. However, if you are on the other side of the coin and a co worker tries to ask you out but you aren’t interested then you should turn them down gently or it could turn into something nasty. Who likes rejection? In the world of office dating it can go from being fun and exciting to be- No one does, especially when you have to see that person every day. ing a SCANDAL. Unless, you have an Olivia Pope somewhere on retainer I’d suggest you know what you’re getting into beforehand. Still want to Single Both Parties Interested. This looks like it. Lusting at him in the take that jump then at least find out if your company even allows em- break room finally paid off. You’ve found your knight in shining armor ployees to date. Most companies have a strict no fraternization policy. & you didn’t even have to leave the office. How sweet? Since this isn’t Career Builder recently surveyed more than 4,000 employees around the country & asked if they have ever dated their co-workers. 40% of them said, “Yes.” I don’t find this unusual but I wish I could ask how many of those relationships lasted. With more and more people spending most of their time at work it’s only natural that some would seek out a potential mate within the company.
Lifetime let me crash your party. Once, most people fall in love they become distracted for a little while. So while you used to be the most productive person now you are day dreaming at your desk. Taking extra walks just to see if you catch a glimpse of your “office boo” (as my sister says). Or what if you sleep with him & he lets everyone know. That one night of passion has its backlash. See where this is going? You’re Single & He’s The Married Boss. Ok, even though married should automatically mean off limits and ignore any obvious advances from him. Let’s be honest that isn’t always the case. You work late hours and you find yourself glancing at him. Stop yourself. While having a spicy affair may be fun & exciting in the beginning but rest assure it always ends bad. Once the word gets out no woman one will trust you & the men will think you’re the office tramp. Think it won’t ever come to light just remember Monica Lewinsky thought that as well. So, instead of giving in to the temptation of playing with fire respond with something quirky, “Will your wife be joining us?” Now for your sake I hope they aren’t swingers because if so then you are on your own. Now if after all that you still feel like you must engage in finding romance in the workplace then I’ll give you tips to help you out.
... Don’t date your boss. Under no circumstance ever should you date your direct boss. It’s a taboo & can cause lots of problems. Yet, if you find love with your SINGLE boss go to HR and ask for a reassignment or possibly even find a new job. You don’t want people saying you get preferential treatment. Be Discreet. Social media has ruined this for most Americans. Nonetheless, try & keep your business out of the office. Even in the quietest offices gossip is around. Don’t feel the need to let everyone know Ken at cubicle X belongs to you. No rendezvous in the janitors closet at lunch. Keep your love life off your work computers. Don’t send him/her sexy pictures through the company email. Crazy but it’s been done. Remain Productive. When your company hired you they got a great employee who was on fire & passionate. Now that you’ve found love in the office your fire is elsewhere. They don’t care that you have an “office boo” they still want their work done & just as good. Don’t give them a reason to fire you because.. Guess what? Love doesn’t pay the bills!

By Cassandra Lueck There is little left to imagine why so many people are envious of San Diego lifestyle - temped weather, activities for every flavor, lovely scenery, and even lovelier inhabitants. San Diegans are offered a unique opportunity to look and feel their best all year round, yet so many of us fail to reach beyond our comfort zone and expand our fitness horizons. Now is the time to explore different options and perhaps find a new fitness-addiction. After all ladies, you have to train like a beast to look like a beauty. That fine balance between fierce and fine has always intrigued me, allowing me to cross train between burlesque dance, weightlifting and Muay Thai. While I may be an example of the extreme, cross training between different disciplines keeps workouts physically and mentally stimulating, but also helps keep me strong in a variety of different ways. Whether you are looking to shake up your training by shaking what your mom gave you, or pursuing some warrior-esque workouts, there is an alternative fitness fit just for you. “I believe in building and working on strengths and weaknesses of the way the body already works”, says Cosmoe Cala, CSCS C.P.T. Having conditioned the best and the brightest of Mixed Martial Arts fighters, Navy EOD and SPECWAR specialists and speaking on an extensive personal background in multiple martial arts genres, clearly, he knows what he is talking about. When asked why alternative fitness options need to be pursued, Cala replied “[It’s important] to utilize motions that you already use on a day to day basis and, with using my imagination and skillset, to develop sequences that challenge all my clientele in all walks of life.” Being the melting pot that San Diego is, the time is ripe to explore different options and modes of fitness. 5kPREP
FOR US EVERYDAY FOLKS
by Fernando Sampson fitclubsandiego@gmail.com fernando@thegoodsmagonline.com
If you’re like the majority of Americans, the thought of running for fun may seem a bit backward. Still you can’t seem to stop considering participating in a running event. You may have friends, family members, or co-workers who can’t say enough about the experience. Maybe you’re
tired of hearing about it and ready to try it out yourself. Whether you’re a weekend warrior, or just a simple couch bum, there
are a few steps to completing a running event. Many of us believe we can revert back to our younger and more athletic days with no problem at all. In reality even preparing for a short race such as a 5K does take some planning and preparation. Here are some tips and suggestions in order to not just see the finish line but run confidently through it!
Set Goals with friends -
Like any good plan you must set goals and make sure they are realistic ones. Speaking with most experienced runners the best way to reach these goals is to utilize group workouts. You may have seen these people, groups of runners sometimes wearing the same colored shirt or similar clothing. They are more than likely preparing for a distance run of some sort. In a 2012 study, it was estimated that 0.5% of Americas participated in a running event. Of those Americans, 96% had trained with and recommended training with an organized running group. Group training is a concept well known and respected in the running world. These groups are highly recommended for the beginning runner, as they are usually the ones to quit when training alone. By submerging yourself in a run group, you will benefit from their organized workouts and important racing tips.
All important stretching -
Even your P.E. teacher in elementary school used to bark out the importance of stretching. With all the advances in sports medicine, nothing works better than preventative care. Stretching and rolling of your muscles is old school preventative care, don’t overlook it. Obvious problem areas for runners are the knees, ankles, feet and back. All these areas should be stretched properly in warm-ups and warm downs. Imagine living in the mid-west during winter and not warming up your car before work. The same applies to the muscles you fire while running, they must be warmed up properly. Invest in a foam roller to roll out your problem muscles post workout and warm athletic gear for cold morning runs.
What to eat -
This is simple but many people make it much more difficult. When training for a running event your calorie intake will skyrocket and you must replenish your system correctly. What does correctly mean? 90% healthy non processed foods and 10% junk is the correct formula for most Americans. Don’t kill yourself trying to eat only healthy foods, take the necessary steps to curb your diet correctly. After a workout have a large glass of chocolate milk, drinking plain water after exercise replaces lost sweat and that’s it. Chocolate milk provides protein and carbohydrate replenishment to your muscles. Your junk food should consist of foods like chocolate milk; junk with benefits the industry calls it. You should focus on consuming all natural, non processed foods to give your body the fuel it will need. Give your body plenty of wheat pastas with chicken and vegetables. Go light on your salad dressings, sauces and marinades, as these are the kind of extra calories you don’t need. Try to eat healthy snacks throughout the day to boost metabolism and stay fueled. Don’t focus on one healthy meal a day but yet eat healthy snacks every 2-3 hours.
Financial prep -
The New York City marathon costs around $255 but don’t get scared off yet, most 5k’s cost somewhere around $20-$40. If you really want to feel good about yourself, get sponsors and give the proceeds to a charity of your choice. Many marathons are just huge charity events and what better way to spend your time than to give back while you better your body. If you are searching for a good place to start your 5k journey, go to www.active.com for more information on active events in your community.
1 The Top 12 Super Foods by kimberly kimmel
We’ve all heard the term ‘super foods.’ But, what are they and what makes them so ‘super’? Super foods are called that due to the superior nutrition they bestow and because they help your body’s healing process. Much like medications, they can be used to help lower blood pressure, fight off cancer cells, and even help to prevent heart attacks and stoke.

Here are the top 12 that are recommended for optimum health. These foods will naturally recharge your batteries and help keep you disease free. Mangos One cup of this tasty fruit has tons of vitamin C and supply about a third of your daily vitamin A needs. If you can’t find fresh, reach for frozen. They also contain potassium which helps to lower blood pressure. They are great in a protein shake or on top of cereal.
1
Berries Any berry- especially blueberries and blackberries have natural antioxidants. Getting your antioxidants and phytochemicals by consuming fruit is the best way for complete absorption. So put down that vitamin bottle and eat fresh! They contain fiber and vitamin C and especially high levels of cancer fighting antioxidants. You can add them in a protein shake or mix in with organic yogurt. Berries are naturally sweet and can be eaten like candy.
2
Leafy Greens Spinach, kale, dark green romaine lettuce, collards and mustard greens all contain vitamins A and C along with vitamin K, potassium, calcium, folate, iron, lutein and tons of fiber. Toss in a salad, or put spinach and lettuce in a sandwich. Your eyes, especially, will thank you.
3
Tomatoes The Italians know what they are doing. They eat tons of tomatoes in most of their dishes. An important source of vitamin C and fiber, tomatoes also contain beta-carotene and lycopene. For the best absorption, steam or cook. These beauties help reduce your risk of colon, lung, breast and prostate cancer.
4
Sweet Potatoes These are the stars of the lot. As one of the healthiest vegetables around, they have carotenoids, vitamin C, fiber and potassium. Eat them with spices such as nutmeg or clove, or enjoy baked sprinkled with some olive oil.

Get into the habit of sprinkling it on most of your food as it is a great little warrior against cancer and is a natural detox for your liver.
6
2 7

These seeds help reduce LDL cholesterol, help lower depression, help you sleep better, and are high in zink which help protect against osteoporosis. They also contain vitamin B and protein. Toast in the oven, or eat raw. A true super food.
10
Wild Salmon Salmon contains omega-3 fats which are good for your heart. It even helps reduce the risk of sudden-death type of heart attacks. Broil with lemon juice and serve with brown rice. Avoid farmed salmon.
11
Organic Greek, Unsweetened Yogurt Don’t worry about the fat content. If it’s natural, and contains no sugar, it’s good for you. When fat is naturally in a food, it’s fine. The process to take out the fat is unnatural. Greek yogurt is tastier and creamier than regular yogurt and has tons of calcium. Eat it plain, in a protein shake or eat it frozen with some added berries for a delicious treat.
12
Organic Eggs Choose cage free, organic eggs to avoid any added hormones. Eggs have plenty of protein as well as iron, biotin and vitamin B12.

Some simple rules of thumb to keep in mind when choosing healthy foods.
• All super foods are natural foods. If it’s processed, comes in plastic, or in a box, chances are, it’s isn’t good for you. • If the food has more than five ingredients, it probably isn’t natural. • If sugar is listed within the first five ingredients, avoid it. • Shop the outer parameters of the store. The freshest foods are located away from the center aisles. • If you can’t eat fresh, the next choice is frozen. Avoid any canned foods as they can contain BPA. • Super foods are always a natural food. Remember, if God didn’t make it, don’t eat it. And remember, food is your medicine. Fruits and vegetables are nature’s cancer fighters. So, listen to your mother, as she listened to hers and, “Eat your fruits and vegetables!” Your body will thank you.

Bright eyed and full of hope, just a few months ago so many of us tinked our champagne glasses, exclaimed “Salud!” and vowed that THIS YEAR would be different, THIS YEAR was the year of being fine, sexy and fly. Fast forward, how is that working out for you? Yea, I thought so. Time to cancel that pity party, lace up your sneakers, and get that rear in gear; resolution revamp is about to rain down! Rebel: rethink your goals Robotically, when I ask prospective clients what their fitness goal is, I get told “to lose ____ pounds”. But I challenge them, is that really your goal? Ask yourself that same thing, is it really what the scale says to you that matters, or is it fitting back into those killer Hudson jeans? A healthy body fat percentage and increasing muscle mass is truly what must of us long for, so there is no need to get hung up on the scale. A much more accurate way to measure our goals is to take measurements. Have a loved one use a measuring tape to record your starting point. Take these key measurements: Chest (fullest part of the bust) Waist (natural waistline) Bellybutton Hips (fullest part) Thigh (fullest part) Bicep Relaxed Bicep Contracted (flexed) Retake your measurements every 4-6 weeks to accurately chart your progress to a healthier, leaner you. Conquer your Cardio Armed with your newly gained focused and drive, stop and take a gander on the people stuck on the hamster wheels…I mean elliptical machines, not a lot of tight muscles in sight. So much time is spent on them, many people creating an odd addiction and dependency on the cardio equipment, but no forward progress is really being made. It is important to me that I impress upon my clients one thing: that our bodies are meant to MOVE, to run and frolic and be free! So shake of the shackles of the mindless cardio equipment and make some real progress! Interval Training Aside from slaying calories, interval training is excellent conditioning for strengthening our heart and improving our metabolic output.
