Spring is a time of new beginnings.
That’s especially true this year as the world begins to recover from the effects of the pandemic. At Goodwill we’re bringing back well-loved programs that have been on hiatus, and adding new twists.

Our Hippie Dash is back this year, in a new location, with lots of safety measures in place. We invite everyone to enjoy a morning of peace, love and Goodwill at the Safety Harbor waterfront on May 15. Or share in the hippie spirit remotely with the run-from-home option. More about Hippie Dash on page 3.
Our volunteer programs have returned in reimagined formats appropriate for a more virtual world. Volunteers for our BookWorks children’s literacy program are now doing online readings for preschool children rather than going into Head Start centers for the story times. Volunteers drop off books in advance so each child still receives a book to take home and share with their family.
President and CEO Emeritus R. Lee Waits
The annual BookWorks book drive also has a new twist. Instead of asking people to drop off children’s books at our donation sites, books for the program may be purchased through an online wish list. Details are on page 2.
Our Mission: Transforming lives through lifelong learning and the power of work.
Our J.A.G. (Junior Ambassadors of Goodwill) program has also gone virtual while still allowing students to earn community service hours through activities that support Goodwill’s services. You’ll find more about J.A.G. Virtual on page 3.
GoodWorld News is a quarterly publication for friends and employees of Goodwill IndustriesSuncoast, Inc.
The way we do things has changed, but we will continue to find ways to partner with the community to create new beginnings for those we serve.

In Memoriam
Sylvia M o ore, m a n a g e r o f t h e Goodwill store in Riverview, passed away Nov. 15, 2020. She had been with Goodwill since 2016 and had managed stores in Ruskin and St. Petersburg before being named manager of the Riverview superstore. Team members at the store remember Sylvia as a wonderful boss and friend. A huge animal lover, she also had a passion for the Goodwill mission and loved doing her job. She will be missed, but never forgotten.

We hope you can help us keep the love of reading alive during this year’s Book Drive, beginning April 1.
There are two ways you can help! One way is by donating online directly to our BookWorks fund. We can then purchase books for a fraction of their retail price. The second way is by choosing the books you’d like to purchase from our Amazon wish list, and the books will be sent directly to our BookWorks location.
Gena Schaffer loves to hop on to her home computer with preschool storybooks at the ready, and log on to a virtual “meeting.” On the other side of the meeting is a group of children from a Brandon preschool, seated on the floor and ready to listen intently as Gena reads them a story or two. When the virtual reading is over, the schoolteacher presents each child with a book of their own to take home, provided by BookWorks. During the pandemic, Gena was one of the first BookWorks volunteers to pivot to virtual readings, instead of the prepandemic in-person readings. She is a member of Brandon Kiwanis, and has recruited other club members to do virtual readings also.
In addition to supplying the preschools with books prior to the virtual readings, our volunteers also continue to drop off books to elementary schools in need, to help supplement their libraries.
This year we can accept donations of actual books for our Goodwill stores but not our BookWorks program, as they must be sorted and cleaned by numerous volunteers prior to distributing. To learn more visit www.goodwill-suncoast.org/book-drive-2021
The virtual scenario is one way our BookWorks child literacy program has adapted during the pandemic. The readings help keep kids engaged in story time, and the free, ageappropriate books help each child create a home library of their own. Oftentimes, these are the only books available to them. While nothing can replace the enjoyment of in-person readings (and we can’t wait to get back to them!) we know it’s vitally important to engage these young minds with books of their own to take home and enjoy.
Thank you to our Book Drive sponsors!

GoodStuff Hey Man, We’re Back! After having to cancel the 2020 Hippie Dash for Peace, Love & Goodwill, we’re really looking forward to May 15 when we’ll safely celebrate our fifth year of groovy fun as hundreds of free spirits take to the streets of Safety Harbor. Modern-day hippies can choose from a 10k or 5k run, a 1-mile Walk, Woof & Roll (dogs welcome) and a Flower Child Fun Run for the little hippies. After the race, we’ll hang out at Safety Harbor’s waterfront downtown, which allows plenty of room for social distancing. There will be vintage VWs on display, a DJ spinning tunes from the ‘60s, free beer and munchies, costume contests with prizes and an all-around super psychedelic vibe! Register now for the grooviest race in Tampa Bay at runsignup.com!
A Certain Gift During Uncertain Times As we look forward in 2021, we realize the uncertainties that affected us during 2020 with COVID and the political divide that shaped our elections. It had a strain on our economy with all of us feeling the effects in some manner. Goodwill-Suncoast has seen some of our longterm programs disappear, only to be replaced with new, exciting programs that fill current needs in our communities. In order to continue serving individuals, we continue to need your financial support. Some of you have seen the loss of income due to the pandemic while others are concerned about the future taxation of income and other assets and ponder if there will be enough to continue your current standard of living. While we greatly appreciate current cash gifts or gifts of appreciated assets, you might want to consider a legacy gift. A legacy gift would allow you to make a future gift that would not be a current out-of-pocket expense but would allow programs and services to function for years into the future. Legacy gifts can be as simple as a bequest in your will or living trust. By naming Goodwill IndustriesSuncoast, Inc., you will receive an estate charitable tax deduction in the future while demonstrating the importance of the Goodwill mission to you. A gift can be made in a specific amount or a percentage of your estate.
J.A.G. Virtual Our super popular volunteer program for high school students has pivoted to a virtual format this year. Students in J.A.G. (Junior Ambassadors of Goodwill) can earn up to 25 hours of community service. The virtual program allows them to volunteer on their own at the direction of Goodwill Volunteer Services. Each program activity supports a different aspect of our mission. Learn more at www.goodwill-suncoast.org/junior-ambassadors
The other main category of legacy gifts is designed to provide you with an income for a period of time or for life. Depending on the type of gift, you can also provide this income stream for other beneficiaries. Upon the passing of the income beneficiaries, the remaining principle will be paid to Goodwill-Suncoast. The two most common income gifts are the charitable gift annuity and charitable remainder trusts. The type of assets that will fund the vehicle, plus the number and the relationships of the income beneficiaries will determine which method is best to meet your needs. Each will provide a current tax deduction and can begin income payments in as early as a month. You will want to consult with your accountant to assure you are eligible for the tax deductions. A Legacy gift will give you the ability to touch multiple lives for years. With a plan to share a small portion of what you have been blessed with, you are giving someone the chance to write a successful story in their life, thanks to future services you made possible through Goodwill-Suncoast. Please contact Jim Williams, Vice President for Fund Development if we can provide additional, detailed information. (888) 279-1988 Toll Free jim.williams@goodwill-suncoast.com.

of Tarpon Springs makes charming upcycled art using old picture frames and jewelry pieces
1 Glue the glass onto the back of the frame using a hot glue gun
2 Mix resin according to the directions provided by the manufacturer
3 Pour the resin onto the front of glass, covering the whole area
4
5
Carefully place the jewelry pieces in the resin in whatever pattern you like – it’s best to plan out your pattern/design ahead of time!
After laying all of the pieces in the resin, quickly blast with a heat gun to pop any air bubbles and make sure the resin is evenly spread
And, you’re finished! You’ll have a new flower pot – or whatever design you decide to create – made from an upcycled frame and up c yc led jewelry pieces.

GoodWorks DREAMING
BIG
A young man begins working on his career to accomplish his dreams Colin Shetter has a new job and big dreams. He’s saving money to buy a car so he can take a girl on a date, buy a house with a fence, a couch, a big TV and a push mower for yardwork. In his last year of high school, Colin enrolled in Project SEARCH in Ocala, a program that provides on-the-jobtraining for high school students with disabilities. Project SEARCH is a partnership between Goodwill-Suncoast, Florida Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Marion County Public Schools and host sites Hilton Ocala and Bridgewater Park Health and Rehabilitation Center. “It’s just cool,” Colin says. “I thought I’d do a great job.” And he has. During the program at the Bridgewater Park host site, Colin rotated through housekeeping, floor technician and touched briefly on maintenance before the coronavirus struck and the program was cut short.
Where Dreams Come True In 2003, the Belle of the Ball Project was lovingly founded as a nonprofit organization that provided free prom and homecoming dresses to high-school girls in the Tampa Bay area and surrounding counties.
But because of his work ethic and positive attitude, Colin made a lasting impression and was offered a position as floor technician at Bridgewater Park. “I like doing floor tech and I like that it’s a career,” he says. Colin has progressed to the point that he is now mentoring other Project SEARCH students, and he looks forward to moving up to a maintenance position.
“Project SEARCH trains you how to do the job, get the job, and it shows you things in life,” he says. For more information about Project Search, visit www.goodwill-suncoast.org/project-search
We’re very pleased to announce that Goodwill-Suncoast will be carrying on the Belle of the Ball legacy now that its founder has retired. We will be providing free prom, homecoming, and formal event gowns for young women who may not be able to afford them. Our St. Petersburg boutique will have thousands of new and gently-loved quality dresses in a wide variety of sizes and colors. Stay tuned for more information about our boutique and shopping events. We believe providing dresses is just the beginning. We will also introduce the young women to career development and pathways to a rewarding and successful future. While we are unable to hold all-day shopping events due to the pandemic, we are offering in-person shopping appointments at our temporary location at 16432 US Hwy 19 N., Clearwater. To make an appointment to shop for a dress, please visit our web page at goodwill-suncoast.org/belle-of-the-ball or email belle.oftheball@ goodwill-suncoast.com
