Together We’re Better
President and CEO Deborah Passerini
Helen Keller once said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” This is particularly true of Goodwill and the work we do in the community.

An example is My Mobile Market, the grocery store on wheels that’s bringing nutritious foods to areas where there are no supermarkets while providing job training for people with disabilities. My Mobile Market is possible because of a partnership between Goodwill and Feeding Tampa Bay, with support from the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay. This is just one way Goodwill is translating community support into services that help people achieve their full potential. When you donate to Goodwill or shop in our stores you become part of a social enterprise that helps thousands of people in the local community achieve economic stability each year. People like Berta who is no longer homeless, thanks to a job she obtained with assistance from Goodwill. Berta’s story is on page 7. Together, we’re all better!
Sincerely, Deborah A. Passerini President and Chief Executive Officer

My Mobile Market is Rolling!
The innovative “pop-up market” is a partnership between Feeding Tampa Bay and Goodwill-Suncoast. It is staffed in part by participants in Goodwill’s Life Skills Development program, like Nazim Kamal, who is getting the skills and training he needs to help him transition to community employment. Tressa Iozzia, Nazim’s skills trainer, says his confidence and customer service skills have skyrocketed since joining the My Mobile Market team.
Staffed by Goodwill, it’s the store that comes right to your door! Antonia Rodriguez stepped out of the My Mobile Market “grocery store on wheels” at its September launch. She had a bag full of cereal, pasta, jelly, Vienna sausages and chunk chicken. Her bill: $7.25.
My Mobile Market was made possible through the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay “Big Idea” grant, awarded to innovative, collaborative projects that addressed basic needs such as hunger and housing.
“This is a wonderful service!” she said. The grand opening gave Antonia and other residents of New Life Village a first taste of how My Mobile Market operates. The truck provides both fresh and shelf-stable foods at a fraction of the usual cost to areas that are underserved and impacted by barriers like food costs, mobility, transportation and language. New Life Village is a Tampa community designed for families raising foster and adopted children.

Oh, the places they'll go! When Tressa Iozzia talks about her job and the people she helps, the tears begin to well up. “I couldn't have found a better job,” she says. “I love my clients, I’ve seen them improve so much.” The clients Tressa is talking about are participants in our Life Skills Development program for adults with disabilities. More specifically, Tressa helps clients acquire job skills and training via the innovative new My Mobile Market “mobile grocery store.” While she drives the truck and acts as cashier, our Life Skills clients are doing inventory, helping to load the truck and practicing customer service skills. The goal is to help the program participants eventually transition into community employment. “I love the whole process,” Tressa says. Tressa is familiar with how it feels to overcome obstacles. Cancer medication caused her to have a stroke in 2012 and she was left with a disability and out of work for three years. She is a widow with a 10-year-old daughter. Now healthy and ready to give back, she is also working on an associate degree in health and human services. “I’m excited to see where my clients and I can go!” she says.

Dinner With Goodwill! Frequent shopper Mercedes Gonzalez transformed her dining room with some paint and a few smart items from Goodwill. Mercedes, a Tampa resident, was going for a casual farmhouse look when she redecorated her dining room from its darker, more Tuscan-inspired past. Here’s how she did it!
Before
After
She whitewashed a corner stand from Goodwill with chalk paint, resprayed the iron work and used a gloss brown paint for the shelves. (Corner stand $12)
Holy cow! Mercedes picked up this adorable creamer from the Goodwill in Oldsmar for $1.16. Two farmhouse chairs from Goodwill were also whitewashed with chalk paint then waxed to seal. (Chairs $8 each at Goodwill) A collection of milk glass is key to a farmhouse look, and Mercedes found all these pieces at Goodwill for less than $5 apiece – and they look great on the side table her husband made to show them off!
What’s better than eating cake? Eating cake from a beautiful stand you only paid $3.16 for at Goodwill!
When combined with new curtains, a new rug and freshly painted walls, the result is the new farmhouse-inspired dining room Mercedes wanted.

GoodWorks Connected to a Second Chance Huberta’s last name is pronounced “rejoice,” and that’s exactly what she’s doing these days! About two years ago “Berta” was laid off from her job as a respiratory therapist. Already living paycheck to paycheck, the job loss forced her into homelessness. Berta lived in her car while her two young children stayed with a friend. After three months, desperation led her to break the law and forge a signature, and she was later jailed for 15 months. Once released, Berta searched for employment all over Pinellas County. But every time “it was like a wall I couldn’t get through,” she says. Until the day she walked into Goodwill’s Job Connection Center (JCC) and met a Goodwill employment specialist.
“The specialist smiled at me and that opened the door…I was welcomed as if I was a person who just came from college, not a convict.” With lots of job leads and a professional resume prepared by the JCC, Berta landed a full-time position within two weeks. She now works as a housekeeper for a beachfront condominium complex. She knows the job is a stepping stone buts vows “I will always keep a job no matter how big or small.” Her plan is to work her way back to a position as a respiratory therapist. In the meantime, she says, she has not become bitter, but better.
“I cannot thank the Job Connection Center enough, the service there is second-to-none,” she says. “It’s well-needed and I pray you’ll be here for a good long time.” Goodwill’s Job Connection Center is located inside our St. Petersburg store at 3365 Central Ave. For more information e-mail JobConnection@goodwill-suncoast.com or call 727-321-7337.
Having a Hay Day! Every Friday morning participants in our Clearwater Life Skills Development program for adults with disabilities head out to volunteer. Their destination: Horse Power for Kids & Animal Sanctuary, a non-profit farm and petting zoo in Tampa. The volunteers do various chores for two hours, including leading pony rides, shoveling clean bedding for the animal stalls and measuring food into baggies.
Kim Mote, a Goodwill employment transition specialist, says the benefits of volunteering are many. “Our participants are gaining skills for community work and understanding that hard work can be fun, fulfilling, and increase their quality of life.”
