President and CEO Deborah Passerini
I’m an unfailingly positive person. Yet my role here at Goodwill requires me to be a realist, so I want to share the good and not so good with you.

First the positive. In a recent survey, Goodwill was named the No. 1 brand doing the most for the world. Locally, GoodwillIndustries Suncoast won the Health & Human Services category in the Tampa Bay Business Journal’s 2016 Nonprofit of the Year Awards. (More about these on page 5.) We are preparing to open a new superstore in Sebring this summer, one of three new stores planned in the next 18 months. More stores translate into increased support for our human services. As we open stores, we also look at ways to meet local community needs. For example, our BookWorks children’s literacy program will be expanding to Highlands County with a hub at our Sebring store. Now the not so good. Despite a rebounding economy and lower unemployment, there are many people who still need assistance to achieve economic stability. We aim to provide that assistance. And you can help. By donating or shopping in our stores, by volunteering your time, or by hiring a Goodwill client, you’ll be helping people achieve their full potential. Let’s fill the glass together!
Sincerely, Deborah A. Passerini President and Chief Executive Officer

S A JUNIOR AMBASSADOR OF GOODWILL, teens can earn community service hours in a fun and meaningful way! Our week-long summer program will introduce them to Goodwill and our daily operations. Each day students will volunteer in a different setting, helping others in the community while earning 30 volunteer hours in one week.
For more information on J.A.G. call Scott Coursen 727-523-1512, ext. 1013 or email scott.coursen@goodwill-suncoast.com
Teens learn about and lend a helping hand in these areas: • Goodwill’s retail store, outlet and warehouse operations • Goodwill’s Life Skills Development program for adults with disabilities • Goodwill’s BookWorks childhood literacy program The summer program runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, beginning at our Goodwill-Suncoast headquarters in St. Petersburg. Upon completion of the one-week program, additional volunteer hours may be available. Just ask!

Goodwill’s Wonder Woman Residents of Goodwill’s Tampa Bay Community Corrections Center often leave the Center with jobs, new hope for a life after prison, and increased self-esteem. The Center helps people break the cycle of addiction and assist with their integration back into society. It’s not easy, but those who succeed often credit Wanda Dunmore, the Center’s program manager. They say her combination of toughness and compassion is key. Wanda, a former Department of Corrections (DOC) employee, oversees 195 residents in the Center, and 40 staff members. She also volunteers as a Guardian ad Litem for abused and neglected children. And in December, she hopes to receive her doctorate degree in Criminal Justice. After an early retirement from the DOC, Wanda began her career at Goodwill in 2010. “At the DOC you were trained to be tough, because if you didn’t – you’d get run over,” she says. “Here it’s rewarding to see residents accomplish so much.” Wanda is a mother to two and has four grandkids. She treats them with the same “old school” discipline she uses at work. “A little love, along with a little toughness!" she says.

GoodStuff We’ve Got Books!
The community donated 36,517 books to our BookWorks childhood literacy program during the annual book drive Feb. 1 through March 15. Thanks to all who contributed for their generosity! In 2015, the program presented 51,579 books to children from low-income families. We couldn’t do it without the community support and fantastic volunteers (see back page)!
Making an IMPACT
Employees from Deloitte volunteered their time at Goodwill for their company’s IMPACT Day, a celebration of Deloitte’s commitment to local communities. The volunteers fanned out to many Goodwill programs. They sorted, labeled and read books for our BookWorks childhood literacy program and engaged in activities with men and women with disabilities in our Life Skills programs.
Graduation Celebration
Tea & Fashion
Aston Gardens senior living community in Tampa hosted a fashion show of Goodwill finds at its annual Mother’s Day Tea. The models – and the outfits – were a huge hit! Residents of Aston Gardens shopped at Goodwill’s superstore in Oldsmar and were joined on the “runway” by two participants in our Life Skills Development program for adults with disabilities. All proceeds from the charming event were donated to Goodwill, along with a $1,000 check from Aston Gardens. Thanks to all involved for your generosity and support!
A Nautical Nightmare!
Save the date! Our Ghoulwill Bash Halloween-themed fundraiser will set sail Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. on the Yacht StarShip in Tampa. The dinner cruise will feature a costume contest and a boatload of surprises!

GoodWorks 660 Strong! Thank you to all our 660 volunteers throughout West Central Florida!
When Goodwill’s BookWorks childhood literacy program expanded to Sumter County in 2015, Kitty Bruens was one of the first volunteers. Every week she’s at the Goodwill store in Oxford, sorting and cleaning donated books that will be presented to children from low income families through the BookWorks program. In addition to volunteering her time each week, Kitty has recruited several friends to the program and she never misses an opportunity to spread the word about BookWorks. For those reasons, we are proud to honor Kitty, a retired employee of the State Attorney’s Office, as GoodwillSuncoast Volunteer of the Year! Goodwill-Suncoast Volunteer Group of the Year is the New Tampa Newcomers. Since 2012, the group of
New Tampa residents has supported childhood literacy by volunteering for Goodwill’s BookWorks program. The group regularly reads to preschool children at Head Start centers in northern Hillsborough County, reaching more than 170 children and presenting them with more than 1,524 books. The group also drops off books donated to elementary schools. Employees of HSN generously participated in BookWorks with their time, talents and finances. Last year, 41 HSN volunteers spent 265 hours cleaning and preparing books and holding book drives. The organization also supported BookWorks through financial donations. For those reasons, HSN is our Corporate Philanthropic Volunteer Organization of the Year.
Hello, Sebring!
We’re thrilled to announce that construction is well under way on our newest superstore in Sebring, located at Sebring Square Mall on U.S. Hwy 27. At press time, the store is expected to open in August. The 33,000-square-foot store will employ approximately 30 people, creating new jobs in Highlands County. It will also be a hub for BookWorks, our childhood literacy program that provides books to children from low-income families. Visit our website for grand opening information!
The Sebring superstore is the 10th opened by Goodwill Industries-Suncoast since 2001. Besides being a bargain-hunter’s paradise, the store will offer a covered donation area.
