New Beginnings ®

One of the guiding principles at Goodwill-Suncoast is the belief that work and lifelong learning transform lives and strengthen communities. As 2016 gets under way, I’m proud that we’re launching new services that support these key beliefs.

President and CEO Deborah Passerini Board Chair Heather Ceresoli Members of the Board Lee Bell Heather Ceresoli Robert D. Dobkowski Tom Falone IV Mark E. Gauthier Martin W. Gladysz Marie Hebbler Paul Horowitz Andrea D. Kiehl Louise R. Lopez John Maceovsky Dominic Macrone Carole F. Philipson Mark D. Pichowski Ed Rader Bob Wabbersen Sandra Young President and CEO Emeritus R. Lee Waits Our Mission: To help people achieve their full potential through the dignity and power of work.

We recently opened a Job Connection Center at the Goodwill store in central St. Petersburg, the first of several such centers planned at our stores. Our goal is to be responsive to the needs of those who come through our doors by offering career exploration as well as workshops and other resources to help job seekers succeed. Goodwill has long provided workforce services at One-Stop employment centers operated by the government. This new program allows us to offer job services directly to people in the communities we serve. Meanwhile we’re walking the talk internally by offering Career Navigation services for GoodwillSuncoast employees. Career navigators are now on staff to help employees develop a career plan and then encourage and coach them along the way. Whether their dream is a promotion, a career change or a job outside of Goodwill, this service, coupled with our tuition reimbursement program, is designed to help employees visualize and achieve their career goals. Eleanor Roosevelt said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Both of these services will help people achieve their dreams and create brighter futures for their families. In this New Year, this represents new beginnings, for us, for our employees, and for the people we serve. You are a big part of that effort. When you donate to Goodwill or shop in our stores, you’re supporting these and many other services to help people achieve their full potential through the dignity and power of work. Together, we can create new beginnings and transform lives.

Sincerely, Deborah A. Passerini President and Chief Executive Officer

Experience Counts! Long-time board member Ed Rader was first introduced to Goodwill when he was Vice Chair of the Industrial Development Authority for Marion County. Lee Waits, then CEO of Goodwill-Suncoast, was seeking approval for our Ocala Superstore. The two met, and with Ed’s strong retail background, the rest was history.

M E M B E R

After having retired from managing Kmart stores around the country for nearly 30 years, Ed decided to join the Goodwill-Suncoast Board of Directors in 2001. “I said ‘Hey, why not, it might be fun!’” The fun has lasted some 14 years, during which Ed rarely missed a board meeting. During his long tenure on our board, Ed is proud of three main accomplishments: Helping bring our “superstore” concept to life, beginning with the Ocala Superstore; greatly lowering workplace risks; and, many years ago, suggesting a superstore be built in “The Villages” area of Marion County. It took years, but that last idea came to fruition last year with the opening of our Oxford Superstore, adjacent to the huge active-adult community. The success of that store is one example of the foresight Ed brings to Goodwill through his service to our board. “It’s been a long and rewarding ride,” Ed says. Ed and his wife Jo have one son and a brand new grandson. They live in Ocala. B O A R D

In Memoriam

Congratulations to board member Lee Bell, who was elected President of Saltmarsh, Cleaveland & Gund.

Thaer Qasem, a skills trainer at the Gandy Boulevard location of Goodwill’s Life Skills Development program, passed away Dec. 31, 2015. He had worked at Goodwill since 2011 and was a valued employee. Thaer was dedicated to helping the men and women in the program master tasks. He was a quiet man until conversation turned to sports. Then he had plenty to say. A diehard Bucs fan, Thaer even flew to Chicago to watch them make the number-one pick in the NFL draft. He will be missed.

Connecting Our Community to Jobs We have exciting news! To bring our mission of putting people to work to the forefront of our daily operations, we’ve opened an innovative Job Connection Center right inside our St. Petersburg Superstore on Central Avenue. All of the Center’s services are free to local job seekers.

Job Searches

The Center is a local, community based place where people can comfortably job search in a supportive environment. It offers career planning and exploration and assists job seekers to identify paths to their careers of interest. It also offers reading, math and financial literacy options as well as employability workshops for those who need assistance. In addition, the Center connects people to other area resources that can best meet their needs outside of work. The Center is designed to be a place for job holders or job seekers to simply get answers regarding local services – such as where to find childcare, transportation, and training, for example.

Career Planning

Employability Workshops

Our Job Connection Center is also reaching out to other local agencies to help them provide workshops or job placement services that they may not otherwise have the resources/budget to provide themselves.

Making Connections Donna McGrath’s focus is getting our new Job Connection center up-and-running. In her new position at Goodwill, Donna will manage the center’s day-to-day operations, as well as focus on building relationships in the community to provide employability and job placement services. She’ll also be working with community-based agencies to offer workshops that meet the needs of job searchers and hosting recruiting events for area employers as part of the center’s outreach and business development. Donna is no stranger to “getting the job done!” She was previously a program manager of Goodwill’s Community Employment Services, where she helped find meaningful employment for people with developmental, learning, physical or emotional disabilities. “I’ve seen first-hand how employment can change a life,” Donna says. “I’ve seen it lift people up and make a difference in their lives. That’s what keeps me passionate about the work I do for people who are looking for jobs!” Donna lives in Bradenton with her husband and son. She also has two adult children, plus a son-in-law and daughter-in-law.

Keep it Glassy! Transform a plain glass into something pretty and personalized

Here’s an easy project to bring your personal style to life!

Find napkins with a design you like (packages are often available at Goodwill for $.99) and peel away the layers of ply until you’re left with just the printed sheet.

1

2

Start with glass jars, vases or plain old drinking glasses. You’ll easily find options at Goodwill, starting at about $1 a piece.

Brush a thin layer of “Mod Podge” glue or watered-down Elmer’s glue on a small section of your glass with a paintbrush. Lay a portion of your napkin onto the glass, then brush another thin layer of glue over it. Keep repeating this process, layering the napkin pieces as you go. Paint a thin layer of glue over each layer until you’re happy with how it looks!

3

4 Embellish your glass with yarn, fibers, lace or charms! 4

GoodWorks Two Decades

OF DEDICATION

As customers pour into the Winn-Dixie supermarket in Tarpon Springs, they call out “Hey Gary!” to the store employee gathering carts. “Hey there!” Gary Cooper answers back, then turns to explain where each customer is from and how long he has known them. With a friendly smile, happy attitude and 20 years on the job, it’s no wonder Gary is on a first-name basis with many regular shoppers. He began working at a different Winn-Dixie nearby before transferring to this one on Pinellas Avenue. “I don’t mind changing places,” he says. “As long as I have a job it’s all good!” In April of 1995 Gary entered Goodwill’s Supported Employment program that helps adults with disabilities find and keep jobs. That August, he began with Winn-Dixie

as a front-end clerk and bagger. His Goodwill job coach, Angela Harris, says that Gary is a flexible teamplayer praised by the store’s management team. His 20 years on the job was recently recognized and celebrated by his Winn-Dixie peers. Gary, 61, lives with his mother. In his spare time he attends church service and participates in educational classes from The Grow Group, a non-profit organization that provides vocational rehabilitation services to Floridians. Gary says he’ll retire at 65, but in the meantime: “A lot of people know me and like me here. I always try to be nice to everyone!”

Coming Soon to Clearwater! We’re excited to announce the opening of our newest store at 16432 U.S. Hwy 19 N. in Clearwater this spring! It joins an existing three-building campus of Goodwill-Suncoast operations and services, including our BookWorks childhood literacy program, Community Employment Services, Human Resources and a Life Skills Development program for adults with disabilities. Stay tuned for Grand Opening details!

The store will be 21,000 square feet of bargain-hunting paradise, and employ about 25 people.
