When I was a kid, we learned about the world of high finance by doing chores and earning an allowance.
President and CEO Deborah Passerini
But while that taught me the value of earning a dollar, it didn’t teach me how to budget, how to plan for expenses and how to save money. I was not alone.

If you need accommodation or assistance in accessing any area of employment or program services, please let us know.
Today, less than four out of 10 Americans could pass a basic financial literacy test and that alarming statistic has prompted us to join efforts to provide financial education throughout our community. Goodwill-Industries Suncoast will be a partner in the Junior Achievement Finance Park in Tampa that will open this spring, offering eighth graders an opportunity to learn about personal finance first-hand while also being introduced to Goodwill’s social enterprise. (For more on this, see page 3.) In addition, Goodwill is partnering with area banks to present quarterly “Lunch & Learn” sessions to Goodwill employees across our 10 county territory on financial topics. Our banking partners include Regions, SunTrust, PNC Bank, and Wells Fargo. Plus, Goodwill employees are encouraged to learn about credit, saving, budgeting and home ownership through Bank of America’s Better Money Habits website. Finally, Goodwills throughout the nation are helping people put more money back in their pockets through maximum tax refunds by claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit when they file their federal tax returns. This Goodwill free service, available to low- and moderate-income families, is offered locally at our Job Connection Center at our newest retail store at 2550 N. 34th St. in St. Petersburg, our Clearwater Campus at 16432 U.S. Hwy 19 N. in Clearwater, and our facility at 10596 Gandy Blvd. in St. Petersburg. At Goodwill, we believe in the power of work. And in making wise investments in the future of people in the 10 counties we serve. Sincerely,
Deborah A. Passerini President and Chief Executive Officer
Feeding the Cause Representatives of Wells Fargo present a check for $10,000 to support Goodwill’s Food Production & Distribution Training Program. Goodwill’s Jim Williams and Kris Rawson, far left and right, accept the check from Machelle Maner, Linda Hague and Zubaida Alidreesi of Wells Fargo. The program prepares clients in Goodwill’s Life Skills Development program to staff My Mobile Market, a grocery store on wheels that brings low-cost, nutritious food to areas where it may not be available.

Our Newest Superstore is Open for Business! It was dark, it was chilly, and it was early, but the shoppers came in droves! That was the scene before 7 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 29, when some 200 shoppers lined up outside our newest superstore to see what bargains awaited inside. When the doors opened, those shoppers were not disappointed! In fact, the grand opening was our most successful yet, with 1,650 shoppers on Friday alone. The big, bright, freestanding store is located at 2550 34th St. N. in St. Petersburg. Besides a huge array of great bargains, it houses our innovative Job Connection Center, a community based place where people can comfortably job search in a supportive environment, entirely free of charge. The Center

offers career planning and exploration and assists job seekers to identify paths to their careers of interest. It also offers reading, math and financial literacy options as well as employability workshops such as resume development, computer classes and interview skills for those who need assistance, or who need to be connected to other agencies that can best serve them. The Job Connection Center was formerly located in the Goodwill store at 3365 Central Ave, in St. Petersburg. Besides being a bargain-hunter’s paradise, the new store offers a convenient drive-through donation lane. This will give area residents a place to easily drop off items they no longer need, contributing to a greener community while supporting Goodwill-Suncoast’s services to thousands of people in West Central Florida.

A Gambling Man Bob McCabe had a 20-year career in the casino industry when he decided to roll the dice and take a retail management position with Goodwill-Suncoast. After overseeing slot departments at four different casinos across the country, he landed first as an assistant manager at our Oldsmar superstore. “I was looking for a change,” he says. “I didn’t want to keep moving around.” After steadily moving up the ranks for the past three years, Bob is now settling in as the manager of our brand new St. Petersburg store on 34th St. N. He is a very hands-on manager, stopping to straighten and pick up items while talking to customers and employees. His hobby, he says, is his family. Especially his six grandkids – and 10 cats, but that’s another story! He is the youngest of eight boys and was born on Dec. 25. For years, he says, he was convinced Christmas was all about celebrating him! As for his relatively new Goodwill career, Bob thinks he has hit the jackpot. “I like the family aspect of Goodwill,” he says. “The team is like family, and the company understands the importance of your actual family.”

GoodStuff Book Drive Begins! BookWorks Book Drive Feb. 1 - March 15 Maya Angelou once said “Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.” We wholeheartedly agree! That’s why February kicks off our annual BookWorks book drive. If you live in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Hernando, Marion, Sumter or Highlands counties, please consider donating new or like-new books for children. To donate books, attach a note indicating they are “For BookWorks” and drop them off at any Goodwill-Suncoast store or donation site. During the entire year, BookWorks volunteers read to thousands of kids from low-income families and then present them each with a personalized book to take home. To donate money so new books can be purchased, please visit goodwill-suncoast.org/give-online. Thank you to our book drive sponsors!
High School Students Wanted! For the third consecutive summer, Goodwill is offering its Junior Ambassadors of Goodwill (J.A.G.) program for high school students. The weekly volunteer program offers 35 community service hours earned in a fun and meaningful way! It’s currently offered to students in Pinellas County, Polk County and Tampa. Learn more and register online at www.goodwill-suncoast.org/junior-ambassadors
Get Hippie With Us! Calling all fun-loving free spirits! Goodwill’s Hippie Dash returns May 19, with a few funky enhancements – such as an added 8k distance, new medal designs, awards 3-deep in each age group, and the ability to create your own team, to name a few! Don’t miss the grooviest race in Tampa Bay, and remember, dogs and your little flower children are welcome too! Register at https://runsignup.com/ Race/FL/Gulfport/HippieDash

Deep-Fried Fun Now through Feb. 18, anyone who donates at GoodwillSuncoast stores or attended donation centers will receive a coupon good for $2 OFF an adult ticket to the Florida State Fair, open Feb. 8 - 19. For each redeemed coupon, $ 1 will be donated to Goodwill. The discount applies to tickets sold at the fair admission gates, and may not be used for advanced ticket purchases.
Coming Soon Goodwill-Suncoast will have a “storefront” at the new Junior Achievement Finance Park in Tampa. The Finance Park will teach 8th grade students about careers and money management in a fun, interactive environment.
Leave a Legacy Many people think of charitable giving as a one-sided or oneway gift. You give a donation to a charitable organization to be used for its programs and expect nothing more than a “thank you letter.” However, a charitable gift annuity is a simple way to make a substantial donation to Goodwill-Suncoast while you continue to receive a secure and steady income. A charitable gift annuity is an agreement between you and Goodwill-Suncoast. In exchange for your irrevocable gift of at least $10,000 in cash or public stock, Goodwill will pay you a guaranteed amount for life (including your spouse). Charitable gift annuities are easy to set up and the donors receive an immediate tax deduction for the gift portion of the annuity. A portion of the annuity payments is also tax deductible. One of the chief benefits is that you will play a significant role in helping Goodwill-Suncoast to continue to be able to help thousands of people access job training and find employment so that they can become self-confident, productive citizens. To learn more, please contact us toll free at 888-279-1988 or email jim.williams@goodwill-suncoast.com.

Flowers of Fabric
Create everlasting one-of-a-kind flowers with materials from Goodwill
❶ ❸
Purchase various articles of clothing of coordinating colors from Goodwill
❷
Tear the clothing into ½-inch wide or less strips, then tear those strips into 3to 4-inch lengths. Cut out a basic flower shape from cotton muslin or a similar fabric. This will be your flower base.
Next, stitch buttons to form the center of your flowers or hot glue them into place.
❹
Begin layering the strips in various directions on top of your base. When you are happy with your design, do a simple hand stitch through all the layers in the center of the flower.
❺
To make a bouquet, attach your flowers to a floral wire stem by bending the end of the stem into a circle and hot gluing the bent circle to the back of your flower.

GoodWorks A DECADE OF SUCCESS One of Claudia Hiers' favorite possessions is a plaque that celebrates her 10 years as a Goodwill employee. For more than 10 years Claudia has worked as a processing associate at the Goodwill Superstore in Lakeland. She works three days a week and has never once been late. In fact, she comes in early to say good morning to everyone and stays to enjoy lunch with her peers. “I like it here, it’s very nice,” she says. When Claudia first came to Goodwill she was extremely shy and had never had a job. She first gained work experience assembling mops and performing other work activities at Goodwill’s Life Skills Development program for adults with disabilities in Lakeland.
Eventually, Claudia's drive for independence led her to try for a job at the Goodwill Superstore. Her decade of working and earning a paycheck has enhanced her life in many ways. She shares an apart ment with two friends, goes bowling ever y Saturday, loves to shop at Target and takes a Carnival cruise every year to the Bahamas. “I like Goodwill, I like to come to work,” she says. “I like what I have!”
HURRICANE HELP When last year’s hurricane season was in full force, Goodwill-Suncoast pledged to donate two weeks of contributions from our “Round Up” program to the Red Cross for Hurricane Harvey relief. Many of our customers either rounded up their purchases or donated extra to the fund. As a result, we were able to give the Red Cross almost $11,000 for hurricane relief. When Hurricane Irma hit our state, we partnered with the Red Cross to provide shopping vouchers for victims of that storm.
