And the Award Goes to… ServiceSource presented its Community Partner of the Year Award to Goodwill’s Ocala Community Employment Initiatives team in November. The award is given to an organization that partners with ServiceSource to enhance the lives of people with disabilities. ServiceSource cited Project SEARCH and other pre-employment transition programs as examples of Goodwill services that are opening up employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Goodwill-Suncoast was honored as an outstanding nonprofit as part of the One Tampa Bay Awards. The award was presented by the Tampa Bay Business Journal in November. Melody Marrs, Goodwill-Suncoast Director of Community and Fund Development, has been honored with the J. Lloyd Horton Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding accomplishments and dedication to philanthropy throughout her career. The award was presented by the Tampa Bay Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals in December. Melody has more than 23 years of fundraising experience and has been with Goodwill since 2012. Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful presented an Environmental Service Projects Award to Goodwill’s Hillsborough County Residential Re-entry Center in December. Practicing Goodwill

How one high school student is improving her future and the future of others We caught up with Jacqileen Custer, a “veteran” of our Junior Ambassadors of Goodwill (JAG) volunteer program on a January weekend. The Hillsborough County high school student has volunteered for JAG several times, earning dozens of community service hours that will help qualify her for Florida’s Bright Futures scholarship. As a Junior Ambassador of Goodwill, Jacqi helps out in our retail and outlet stores, reads to kids as part of our BookWorks program, assists residents in our affordable apartment communities, and works alongside adults with disabilities.

“It’s a great experience,” she says. “Not only do you get hands-on work, but you’re helping a good cause… “It’s a great experience,” she says. “Not only do you get hands-on work, but you’re helping a good cause, and practicing social skills with people who sometimes have a harder time being social. It’s really nice to interact with different people.” Jacqi has volunteered in both our week-long JAG Summer program, where students earn 35 community service hours per week, and in our JAG Weekend program, earning 14 hours per

Meet JAG’s Jim! For a little more than a year, Jim Hampton has headed up our Junior Ambassadors of Goodwill (JAG) program. Due in part to his contributions as a volunteer specialist, attendance in the program grew a remarkable 358% since its inception in 2016! It’s a statistic Jim takes pride in.

Jacqi enjoys working alongside James and other participants in our Life Skills Development program. weekend. Her favorite volunteer activity is Goodwill’s BookWorks program, which promotes literacy by giving books to children from families with low incomes. Volunteers read to children at Head Start centers and other locations and then present each child with a personalized book to take home. (Learn about our annual BookWorks Book Drive on page 3.) “It’s fun reading to the kids, and they love getting their new books!” Jacqi often recommends JAG to her friends, and even got her younger brother to sign up. “I tell others that everyone here is very welcoming and open,” she says. “They’re like ‘I’m glad you’re here, let’s get this done and let’s do it together.’” For more information on our JAG program, visit goodwill-suncoast.org/junior-ambassadors

75 percent said they’ll be involved with Goodwill in the future, and 78 percent said they had fun and made new friends.” Jim says his ultimate goal is to have JAG kids engage in Goodwill’s Ambassador Program as adults, and become “educators in the community about Goodwill.”

“The word is out!” he says. “And many of these participants are repeat students.” For Jim, interacting with high school students comes naturally. He taught Spanish at a public high school in Florida for seven years and later in a private school in Atlanta for 14 years. He discovered his own love for linguistics and the Spanish language while in middle school. Jim went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in multicultural and multilingual education, and a master’s degree in Spanish language and linguistics. As a hands-on, engaged JAG leader, Jim is proud of the difference the program is making in the lives of students. “After our summer program in 2019, 78 percent of kids said they had a better understanding of adults with disabilities,

As the Grateful Dead said, “What a long, strange trip it’s been!” Except in our case, it’s more like what a long, GREAT trip it’s been with our Hippie Dash for Peace, Love & Goodwill run/walk event! On May 16 we’ll celebrate our fifth year of groovy fun as hundreds of free spirits take to the streets of Safety Harbor. Participants can choose from a 5k run, a 1-mile Walk, Woof & Roll (dogs welcome) and a Flower Child Fun Run for the little hippies. After the race, we’ll come together at Safety Harbor’s waterfront downtown and enjoy a stroll through vintage VWs on display, a DJ spinning tunes from the ‘60s, free beer and munchies, costume contests with prizes and an all-around super psychedelic vibe! Sign up for the grooviest 5k in Tampa Bay at goodwill-suncoast.org/hippie-dash, man!

Leave a Legacy Many people think of charitable giving as a one -sided or one way gift. You give a donation to a charitable organization to be used for its programs and expect nothing more than a “thank you letter.” However, a charitable gift annuity is a simple way to make a substantial donation to Goodwill-Suncoast while you continue to receive a secure and steady income. A charitable gift annuity is an agreement between you and Goodwill-Suncoast. In exchange for your irrevocable gift of at least $10,000 in cash or public stock, Goodwill will pay you a guaranteed amount for life (including your spouse). Charitable gift annuities are easy to set up and the donors receive an immediate tax deduction for the gift portion of the annuity. A portion of the annuity payments is also tax deductible. One of the chief benefits is that you will play a significant role in helping Goodwill-Suncoast to continue to be able to help thousands of people access job training and find employment so that they can become self-confident, productive citizens. To learn more, please contact us toll free at 888-279-1988 or email jim.williams@goodwill-suncoast.com.

Organization is in your "jeans" with this simple upcycle idea! All you need is: • Embroidery hoops in different sizes. You can often find donated hoops at Goodwill. • Old jeans (Thrift Tip: shop our “color of the week” sale to score jeans at half price! These jeans were $3.98, but just $1.99 during red tag week.) • Scissors • Spray paint (optional)

Spray the outer hoops of your embroidery hoops any color you want (or not at all).

Place the denim between the inner and outer hoops and screw the whole thing until everything is nice and tight.

Once the paint is dry, place the hoops over the jean pockets to see where to cut. Just make sure to leave enough excess fabric so it can be stretched tight within the hoops.

Cut away the excess denim and fill with pens, pencils, books, rulers, whatever!

GoodWorks Kirsten went from extremely shy to hosting happy hours! In her last year of high school, Kirsten enrolled in Project SEARCH in Ocala, a program that provides on-the-jobtraining for high schools students with disabilities. Project SEARCH is a partnership between GoodwillSuncoast, Vocational Rehabilitation, Marion County Public Schools and host sites Hilton Ocala and Bridgewater Park health and rehabilitation center. During the first week of the program at the Hilton Ocala host, she was extremely shy and avoided conversation. But after a few weeks, she began to break out of her shell and became more and more comfortable in her surroundings. Kirsten’s first rotation at the Hilton was in the banquet department, including serving food and drinks to guests. Next she shadowed another lobby attendant and eventually became the program’s first participant to be able to work the position completely independently – with her own cart, keys and a list of tasks.

… after a few weeks, she began to break out of her shell … Fast-forward to today, and Kirsten is working full-time as a life enrichment assistant at Palm Garden Ocala health and rehabilitation center. She plans and participates in activities with the patients, including bingo, happy hours, and reading to and playing games with those who are confined to their rooms. A Goodwill community employment specialist monitors Kirsten’s progress and trouble-shoots any problems. While still shy, Kirsten has stepped out of her comfort zone as a Project SEARCH spokesperson, explaining the program to a group of her peers and speaking at a family information night and at a Project SEARCH graduation ceremony. “I thought I had it in me!” she says.
