It has been a while since I dressed up in a costume for Halloween and the idea of going trick or treating is a distant memory. But this year, on Oct. 24, the week before Halloween, I am going to change that … minus the trick or treating, of course!

Dennis Brant, a facilities technician at our Lakeland Superstore and Lakeland Training Center, died June 3 following a car accident. A Goodwill employee since 2007, Dennis was serious about his work, yet always wore a smile. He is remembered for his funny stories and golden tan, which was evidence of his love of the outdoors. He will be deeply missed. Joni Jones, lead cook at Goodwill’s Hillsborough County Residential Re-entry Center, passed away July 10. She was with Goodwill since 2011. In addition to being an excellent cook, Joni had a great sense of humor and delighted in playing practical jokes. She always had a smile on her face and was very popular with her co-workers. She will be missed greatly.

Zombies Everywhere!
Deloitte Day
Goodwill-Suncoast is hosting a Scare Zone – The Dead Zone Alley – at the downtown Lakeland ZombieFest October 11. The event’s “Outbreak Wristbands” are sold at Goodwill-Suncoast stores. We’re also the official “Zombie Gear Headquarters” for the 5K Zombie Run taking place November 8 in Tampa. Each of our stores has a “zombie gear zone” within our Planet Halloween section.
A huge thank you to the employees of Deloitte who chose to spend their IMPACT Day, a national day of volunteering, at Goodwill. About 35 employees fanned out to lend a hand in our BookWorks literacy program, in our Life Skills Development programs for adults with disabilities, and as art workshop helpers at our housing communities. Thank you Deloitte for your invaluable efforts!
Reduce Taxes, Increase Income! Consider a Goodwill Gift Annuity. 60 years or older? Invest in Goodwill for tax savings and lifetime income! When you make a gift of cash or stock into a Goodwill annuity, you receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction. You also receive guaranteed income for life, after which Goodwill uses the remaining principle for services to people who are disabled or disadvantaged.
For seven years, our training center for adults with disabilities in Lakeland has hosted a small haunted house. It has grown steadily over the years and we hope this year will be the best yet! The “Zombie Apocalypse Survival Shelter” will be open select dates October 23 – 31. Admission is $5 per person, with all proceeds benefiting Goodwill. Be sure to “lurk” for our special guest Dr. Paul Bearer II. For more details visit our website.
BookWorks Boon Goodwill’s childhood literacy program, BookWorks, received $20,000 from PNC Grow Up Great, an initiative founded by The PNC Financial Services Group to help prepare children for success in school and life. The money will be used to purchase books for BookWorks and support the program’s volunteer training services. PNC is also supporting a GED program for residents of our Tampa Bay Community Corrections Center. Heartfelt thanks to PNC’s Dianne Jacob and Joseph Meterchick for assisting with the grants!

Old jeans and bits of jewelry are transformed in to a one-of-a-kind bracelet by local artist “GenieHarlow.” You can find more of her repurposed art at Etsy.com.
The artist picked up a pair of donated jeans and assorted donated necklaces at Goodwill.
She tore the denim into ¼-inch strips and twisted it with silk novelty yarn to make a one-of-a-kind cord that she enclosed in jewelry end caps. She then drilled holes into Buffalo nickels and added more beads for dangle and “charm.”
After adding additional beading and attaching everything with jump rings, the end product is a beautifully unique, boho chic creation!

Starting Over
How Goodwill helped a hard worker get back to work.
U
“Little by little things are turning around,” says Lilliam. nemployed and newly divorced was “If it wasn’t for Goodwill’s employment services, I don’t where Lilliam Flecha found herself in 2011. The Wisconsin mother of two teenagers knew know where I’d be.” she had to take drastic measures. The job market was dismal and her unemployment compensation would soon run out.
“I couldn’t find anything as much as I looked,” says Lilliam. So in June of 2012 she packed up herself, her son and her daughter and moved to Florida to stay with family members. One of her first stops was to CareerSource in New Port Richey, where Goodwill-Suncoast provides employment services. Within two days she was enrolled in Beyond Jobs, a program that helps unemployed and underemployed women get back on their feet. The program requires participants to take job search classes, dress as if they’re going to work and be punctual. The requirements, Lilliam says, helped her get back into the “swing” of having a job. Within two short weeks Lilliam did land a job, at a local insurance agency. She is now a “certified professional service representative” and looks forward to one day getting licensed in insurance sales. In the meantime, her son is a senior in high school and her daughter is enrolled in college. Lilliam and her husband have reconciled, and her life is much improved from her precarious time in Wisconsin.
Lilliam is happy with her new life and her new career.
