A Sense of Community ®

Henry Ford once said that "time and money spent in helping people help themselves is far better than mere giving." In this issue, I invite you to see how Goodwill Industries-Suncoast and your community are putting that thought into action.

Our cover story is about men and women with disabilities who are acquiring job skills and earning paychecks packaging product for Coppertail Brewing Co. Another story focuses on our volunteers of the year, who are helping to instill a love of reading in children from homes where books may be an unaffordable luxury. Did you know that 32 million American adults cannot read the directions on a medicine bottle or complete an employment application? As we start our new fiscal year, Goodwill is focused on creating a bigger impact in people's lives, helping those without jobs overcome obstacles to employment. And helping families achieve economic stability. We plan to open three new retail stores before the end of 2017 to increase support for our job services. Meanwhile, we're looking at opening Job Connection centers in our stores. We'll also be doing needs assessments in the communities where we open stores, to determine how we can best meet the needs of people in each locality. Helping people help themselves strengthens families … and our community. Thank you for being a partner to achieve OUR mission.

Sincerely,

President and CEO Emeritus R. Lee Waits Our Mission: To help people achieve their full potential through the dignity and power of work. A Trusted Advisor Goodwill’s mission has always resonated with David Murphy. So when he was approached about serving on the Goodwill-Suncoast Board of Directors in 2001, David was happy to accept. “Goodwill has a powerful and passionate mission,” says David, who retired from The Sembler Company and now manages his own real estate portfolio. He likes the fact that Goodwill turns donations into jobs for people who are needy or disadvantaged, allowing them to retain their dignity. David joined the board shortly after Goodwill-Suncoast opened its first superstore, and his counsel has been invaluable as eight more of these stores have been opened. Although David was born in Michigan, his father’s job with the Ford Motor Company took the family from Michigan to New Jersey and Chicago. After graduating from college at The University of Michigan, David moved to Tampa Bay where he has lived ever since. He now lives in Gulfport with his wife, Pam, and son, Kyle. In his leisure time David enjoys playing golf, but travel is his passion. He indulged that during an around-the-world trip with Pam and Kyle in 2009. “We traveled by trains, planes, boats and automobiles. Even elephants,” recalls David. Their next adventure is seeing Kyle off to college at George Washington University in the fall.

In Memoriam

The team at the Goodwill Superstore in Trinity has lost a valued member. Lenore “Lea” Corrao, a processing associate, passed away on April 6. She worked at the Trinity store since June 2013 and earlier at the Goodwill store that was formerly in Port Richey. Lea was a wonderful lady who would light up a room with her smile, according to her associates. She was always willing to lend a hand to assist a co-worker or customer. She will be very much missed. 1

COVER STORY

A Perfect Brew Goodwill-Suncoast and craft beer now have something in common. Coppertail Brewing Co., a new production brewery in Ybor City, teamed up with our Life Skills Development program for adults with disabilities in Lakeland. Participants in the program are performing customized contract work for Coppertail, assembling six-pack cartons, loading them with bottles and readying them for shipment back to Coppertail for filling. The collaboration is a winning recipe! Coppertail receives customized services at a competitive price performed by qualified, eager workers at our Lakeland training center. In turn, those Goodwill program participants with disabilities acquire skills in areas such as assembly, collating, labeling and packaging.

Bobby Garvin assembles six-pack containers of Coppertail's "Unholy" brew.

Coppertail’s Brewmaster, Casey Hughes, initially thought it would be great if participants in our program could package 500 cases per week. To his surprise they packaged more than 600 cases in just a day and a half. “It has exceeded our expectations tremendously!” Casey says.

Goodwill can help businesses improve their bottom line by tapping into a source of workers who have physical or other types of disabilities. Whether a business has positions to fill or just needs help with certain tasks, we can supply workers to meet those needs. For more information call 727-437-4031 in Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco counties. In Marion County call 863-701-1351.

A Man and a Mission Richard Lawhead believes in the Goodwill mission. In fact, you could almost say he lives it. For 22 years he has worked at Goodwill, first in south Florida for 15 years and later right here at Goodwill-Suncoast for seven. In his current job as a regional manager for our Life Skills Development programs, Richard oversees Goodwill’s efforts to enrich the lives of adults with disabilities. He oversees more than 40 employees at our six Life Skills program locations in Pinellas County. “The best part of my job is helping the people we serve be successful,” Richard says. How does he help? Adults with disabilities in our Life Skills programs who desire job training are carefully assessed and then assigned activities to help them gain employability skills. Some learn the facets of running our outlet store in St. Petersburg, others package new items to be sold in Goodwill stores, and some may learn food service skills in our Clearwater cafeteria. Those who don’t want job training engage in various enrichment and community activities.

Richard Lawhead lives the Goodwill mission every day.

“We have a great group of people,” Richard says. “And I believe in our mission.” 2

GoodStuff A Winning Team The food service program at MacDill Air Force Base, operated by Aramark and Goodwill’s JobWorks program, won a John L. Hennessy Award recognizing it as one of the best food service programs in the Air Force. It is one of five Hennessy awards presented to Air Force food service programs globally. The Hennessy trophy is awarded to teams displaying excellence in management, effectiveness, force readiness support, food quality, employee and customer relations, training and safety. The award-winning team includes men and women with disabilities who work at MacDill’s dining hall through Goodwill’s JobWorks program.

We’re Booked! Goodwill’s BookWorks program promotes childhood literacy by pairing volunteer readers (see back page) with children from lowincome households. The program continues to go strong, with this year’s book drive bringing in 33,118 donated books! In addition, we’ve expanded BookWorks to our newest superstore in Oxford, near The Villages in Sumter County. The new store serves as a hub for the program. BookWorks is made possible through donations of new or gently used books at any Goodwill-Suncoast donation location.

They Did It! In May, 53 Goodwill employees celebrated their completion of the company’s CORE Management Training Program. The “students” were treated to a luncheon and graduation ceremony. The program –an investment in the professional growth and development of the managers and supervisors of Goodwill–is comprised of group and online classes unique to Goodwill-Suncoast. Congratulations, Graduates!

Tons of Donations Clearwater’s Frontline Communications, a broadcast and communications vehicle manufacturer, challenged its employees to donate to Goodwill for the second year in a row. The result: a whopping 2,024 pounds of donations this year alone! Thank you Frontline for creating and participating in the “Goodwill Challenge!”

Indian Rocks Rocks! Our busiest donation site has a whole new venue, and it’s our only storefront donation center. The center is next to Publix at Indian Rocks Center, 12018 Indian Rocks Rd., in Largo. It replaces the popular Goodwill donation trailer that was formerly in the shopping center parking lot. Attendants will gratefully accept donations 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The new location is staffed by participants in our Life Skills Development program for adults with disabilities. As always, we welcome donations, and donors will receive a receipt for tax purposes.

Reduce Taxes, Increase Income! Consider a Goodwill Gift Annuity. 60 years or older? Invest in Goodwill for tax savings and lifetime income! When you make a gift of cash or stock into a Goodwill annuity, you receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction. You also receive guaranteed income for life, after which Goodwill uses the remaining principle for services to people who are disabled or disadvantaged.

Make Your Garden Glassy! Do-it-yourself glass garden ornaments

Start with a vase ($1.16) turned upside down.

Throw in assorted glass dishes either colored… ($3.16)

…or clear ($2.16)

You can use small ice-cream glasses, little plates and saucers, or candlesticks. Clean all of the glass and let it dry. Start with the top piece placed upside down on a flat surface. Carefully adhere the next piece with clear silicone, then the next and the next, ending with the vase (which will stay right-side-up until it dries). Let the silicone set for 24 hours then it's ready for your garden! The base pole is small copper piping available at hardware stores. Make sure your pole is long enough to go deep into the soil for stability.

Volunteers! Dennis Reece has volunteered for Goodwill’s BookWorks early childhood literacy program since 2011. He reads and presents a book to each child at the North Tampa Community Head Start Center nearly year-round and also sorts and cleans books at Goodwill once a month. Dennis is a retired U.S. Department of State Foreign Service officer and a world-traveler. He is a tireless ambassador for BookWorks, recruiting new volunteers, arranging book drives and helping to spread the word to everyone he meets. For those reasons, we are proud to honor Dennis as Goodwill-Suncoast Volunteer of the Year! Goodwill-Suncoast's Volunteer Group of the Year is SouthShore Readers, made up of six friends who reach more than 400 children at six locations throughout the SouthShore area of Hillsborough County. Many of the children served belong to migrant-working families, and the year-round reading helps them master English and gives them their own home library of books.

Dennis Reece is Goodwill-Suncoast's Volunteer of the Year!

A Day of IMPACT! Employees from Deloitte once again generously volunteered at Goodwill for Deloitte IMPACT Day, a celebration of Deloitte’s commitment to local communities. More than 40 Deloitte professionals sorted and labeled books for BookWorks, read and presented books to preschool children and worked side-by-side with men and women with disabilities, sorting and hanging clothing.

Thank You to Our Volunteers! If you’re interested in volunteering for Goodwill, call Scott Coursen at 727-523-1512, ext. 1013 7

Employees of HSN also generously participated in BookWorks with their time, talents and finances. The company’s 66 volunteers spent 429 hours reading to children, cleaning and preparing books, holding book drives and supporting the program through financial donations. For these reasons, HSN is our Corporate Philanthropic Volunteer Organization of the Year.
