Changes that Work ®
President John F. Kennedy said, “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”
President and CEO Deborah Passerini
We’re taking those words to heart at Goodwill-Suncoast as we make changes that will enable us to do more of what we do best – helping people find work.

Goodwill’s center in Clearwater is becoming a hub of employment services. The facility on U. S. 19 will soon house a sixth location of our Life Skills Development program, where men and women with disabilities learn job skills and earn paychecks. I’m pleased to announce that WorkNet Pinellas has opened a one-stop employment center at the facility to assist job seekers. Our Clearwater Center is also the new home of GoodwillSuncoast’s human resources department and Goodwill Temporary Staffing agency. Other changes will expand support for our job services. We’re enlarging the Goodwill retail store on Gandy Boulevard in St. Petersburg and improving the donation drive-up area to facilitate easier donation drop off. Even our newsletter has changed with a new name, new format and more interactive content. For more than 100 years Goodwill has helped people achieve their full potential. Our aim is to assist even more people and create brighter futures through the power of work. Sincerely,
President and CEO Emeritus R. Lee Waits Our Mission: To help people achieve their full potential through the dignity and power of work. A Good Fit It was a perfect match when Paul Horowitz joined the GoodwillSuncoast Board of Directors in 2011. He was looking to become involved with a nonprofit that had work at the core of its mission. He heard about Goodwill from Dan Johnson, a family friend and former Goodwill board member. “I realized that I really related to the Goodwill mission,” says Paul, a partner with the Tampa accounting firm of Foelgner, Ronz & Straw. Although Paul had been invited to join the boards of other nonprofits, he approached Goodwill about serving on our board. His experience since then confirms he made the right choice. “I can see that the individuals in Goodwill’s programs are happy. People’s lives need to have purpose and meaning,” he says. Outside of work and his duties on the board, Paul keeps busy with his young family. He and his wife Angela have three children, Samantha, 9, Eli, 7, and Eddie, 6, and the family lives in Tampa. Paul’s favorite leisure activities include attending his children’s athletic events – football and soccer as well as Samantha’s dance – and doing home improvements. He finds it rewarding to be part of an organization that helps people build better lives.
In Memoriam
Richard Cooper, a maintenance technician for Goodwill-Suncoast, passed away Oct. 30, 2013. If maintenance was performed at a Goodwill facility from St. Petersburg to Spring Hill during the past three years, there’s a good chance Richard had a hand in it. “He could put anything together with his hands. He loved the job and the people at the job,” says a co-worker. Richard is remembered fondly by those who knew him. 1

A
quick smile and an energetic work ethic belie what was Amber Bledsoe’s reality. Just three years ago she was at rock bottom after being arrested for illegal prescription drug use. Amber was sent to jail, and her 3-year-old daughter was sent to live with grandparents. After 144 days in jail, Amber was referred to Goodwill’s six-month residential drug abuse treatment program. Each year, Goodwill’s Tampa Bay Community Corrections Center in St. Petersburg treats hundreds of non-violent drug offenders for various addictions. The participants live at the center in a highly restricted environment while attending workshops, lectures and group meetings to help them break their chemical dependencies. Participants also receive job placement assistance and are eventually sent to work in the community. After work they return to the center for continued treatment and assistance.
Amber Bledsoe is off drugs, happy, and reconnected with her daughter. She credits Goodwill’s drug treatment program. Amber and her daughter are happily rebuilding their family.
“Before the program, I couldn’t stay off drugs,” Amber says. Today Amber is back home and working two jobs. She’s on track to achieve a management position at Publix and she also works as a server in a popular restaurant. Her daughter, now 6, lives with her mom full-time and it’s clear the two have fully reconnected.
Amber walked the runway as Kate Middleton at Goodwill’s annual Halloween fundraiser.
“I’m so grateful!” Amber says. “I have a really good life now.”

he himself was given by a judge in Detroit after a long string of arrests during his teenage years. The judge deferred Mark’s 10-year prison sentence, and Mark ran with the second chance. He went on to get a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, a bachelor’s in sociology, and a master’s in social work. He’s also a “Certified Addictions Professional,” a designation that requires an intense level of study and testing.
Before his career at Goodwill he backpacked through Europe for a year, pitching a tent as he went along. Later he “hitchhiked” on boats through the Caribbean islands, where he’s proud to say he went a full eight months without ever wearing shoes or socks.
Every day Mark oversees the treatment and activities of some 220 participants at Goodwill’s Tampa Bay Community Corrections Center in St. Petersburg.
Mark plays guitar, doesn’t have kids, and is the owner of the Horse & Jockey British pub in South Pasadena.
Mark has held the position for 13 years and despite the ups and downs, the successes and the failures, it’s clear he loves what he does.
So how did Mark end up a clinical supervisor for Goodwill’s six-month residential drug treatment program? The answer may lie in the break
“We’re in the business of saving lives here,” he says. “We’re honestly contributing to the fabric of society. How can you beat that?”
“I’m very much in the trenches, which is where I prefer to be,” Mark says. “The intrinsic rewards I glean are countless.”

Holiday Dresses and Tacky Sweaters Good Day Tampa Bay on Fox 13 welcomed Goodwill to its studio in December. Our models showed off gorgeous holiday dresses found at Goodwill and were escorted by nerdy men dressed in “tacky” Christmas sweaters (also from Goodwill). News anchors Russell Rhodes and Anne Dwyer even came on stage to get in on the festivities!
Giving Back It was a busy holiday season for participants in our Life Skills Development programs for adults with disabilities. Our Lakeland Life Skills clients presented 200 pounds of non-perishable food to the Agape Food Bank in Lakeland. The food bank distributes food to an estimated 100,000 needy families in Polk, Hardee and Highlands counties. In Ocala, our Life Skills participants raised $1,056 to provide 33 children age 4 to 11 with new toys. The program participants went shopping at Burlington Coat Factory to purchase the gifts. Burlington employs two “graduates” of Ocala’s Supported Employment Program.

Goodwill Lives Here! Avid Goodwill shopper Woodly Jean furnished his entire St. Petersburg apartment with amazing Goodwill finds – and a ton of design flair! Full Window, Empty Frames The wicker “screen” came from a Goodwill outlet store and happened to fit perfectly in the window. Empty picture frames from Goodwill make an easy, inexpensive way to create visual interest in empty wall space.

Easy End Table
Woodly found two table lamps at Goodwill. He used one upright on the end table, but the other he inverted to make a hanging ceiling lamp.
Woodly found two matching baskets of different sizes at Goodwill. He later found a piece of glass that fit the top and voila - instant end table! 4

Goodwill-Suncoast Gives Back to Kids Over the holidays, residents from our community corrections center jumped in to help Nourish to Flourish, a grassroots program that sends food home with needy school children. Nourish to Flourish helps feed chronically hungry children in Pinellas County, where Goodwill-Suncoast is headquartered. Public defender Liz Rhodes coordinates the program, providing free food (typically before the weekend) for approximately 1,000 children at selected schools. In November, participants in Goodwill-Suncoast’s residential drug treatment program decorated 600 bags with a Thanksgiving theme. The bags were then filled with food and sent home with kids before Thanksgiving. Goodwill-Suncoast’s Good to Go Catering was able to add its own goodies to the bags and call on food providers to donate more. “We found out the food has to be ready-to-eat because in most cases the kids don’t have anyone to cook a meal,” said Paul Norris, vice president for community corrections and housing for Goodwill. “And we wanted to do more.”
When it comes to helping needy kids in the community, Goodwill-Suncoast volunteers are ready to lend many hands.

So in December, 30 volunteers wrapped 250 donated presents for Nourish to Flourish to distribute to the same needy kids. The community collaboration won’t end there. Next up Goodwill volunteers and Good to Go Catering will be donating time and food for Valentine’s Day. “Our goal is to help the program – and the kids – all year round,” said Norris.
The Courage to Move Forward How does a young man go from someone who hated talking to people he didn’t know to one who meets and greets dozens of strangers a day? Simple: With the belief that he could. Jimmy Danczyk gained that belief through a Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Youth Program, administered by Goodwill-Suncoast. He was referred to the program by a vocational rehabilitation counselor after being diagnosed with emotional disorders. Jimmy came to the youth program painfully shy and withdrawn, but with perfect, prompt attendance. He nervously pushed himself through mock job interviews and customer service training certification. After a successful real-life interview, Jimmy was selected for a paid internship at Goodwill’s new superstore in Trinity. Store management saw his potential. They placed him on the sales floor and encouraged him to work with the public.
Jimmy Danczyk gained confidence and employment with help from Goodwill
Today Jimmy is an employee of the store, manning the donation drive-thru and interacting with strangers all day long. He has plans to move up the ranks at Goodwill and to begin attending college. “I worked hard,” he says. “And I have something to show for it.”
