Resolved to Serve ®
By now, the confetti has long since fallen and been cleared away and some of the New Year’s resolutions we made may be starting to become memories, too. But that does not have to be the case.
President and CEO Deborah Passerini Board Chair Oscar J. Horton Members of the Board Lee Bell Heather Ceresoli Robert D. Dobkowski Steven M. Erickson Tom Falone IV Mark E. Gauthier Martin W. Gladysz Marie Carson Hebbler Paul Horowitz Andrea D. Kiehl Louise R. Lopez Richard E. Ludwig John Maceovsky David E. Murphy Carole F. Philipson Mark Pichowski Ed Rader Charlie Robinson, Jr. Bob Wabbersen President and CEO Emeritus R. Lee Waits
Former Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson once had a simple, eloquent answer when asked about a resolution. He said: “Let our New Year’s resolution be this: we will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, in the finest sense of the word.” Goodwill is there for people in the communities we serve – helping individuals and families achieve their full potential through the power of work. In this issue you’ll learn about the new Goodwill superstore opening near The Villages in Sumter County that will create jobs and allow us to fund more services. And about our annual BookWorks book drive, during which we will collect books that will be presented to children from low-income families throughout the year. You’ll also meet Betsy Robinson, a Goodwill youth placement specialist who has been named a “champion” at preparing young people for success in the workplace. We try to live Persson’s words every day as we help people create brighter futures. That’s our mission. And it’s one resolution I can promise that we will not forget. Sincerely,
Deborah A. Passerini President and Chief Executive Officer

A Competitor’s Spirit Louise Lopez thoroughly understands the Goodwill mission. She’s a Goodwill-Suncoast board member and is herself a living example of the power of work. Her upbringing, she says, was humble. The daughter of Cuban immigrants who came to this country with minimal material possessions but full of hope for the future, Louise says her parents sacrificed to make their dream a reality. They invested significantly in Louise’s and her sister’s education. Louise graduated from the University of Florida and began a career in accounting. Now, as director of finance at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, her work has frequently taken her to Mexico, South America and other diverse locations in the world. Louise and her husband Marcos have four children, Marcos, 17, Mia, 14, Lily 11, and Lucas, age 8. The family lives in South Tampa with a Havanese dog named Bongo. Despite a demanding career and busy family life, Louise makes the time to run – a lot. She has completed four marathons, including the New York City marathon in November. When Louise was recruited to the Goodwill board in 2005, she was surprised to learn all that Goodwill does, particularly the mission of enabling people by training and helping them find fulfilling work. She was impressed with how the organization puts donations to the highest and best use. ”Goodwill helps people while lifting them up and without compromising their pride,” she says. “I’d like others in the community and all the donors to learn more about that mission.”
In Memoriam
John Attaldo, a beloved cashier at the Goodwill Outlet Store in St. Petersburg, passed away on Nov. 3, 2014. Customers and co-workers alike enjoyed John’s wit and good humor. “He was one of the kindest men you’ve ever met. His spirit was contagious,” said Kathy Roegiers, director of organizational employment services. John is missed in many ways. 1
COVER STORY
Hello Sumter County More stores, more support for our services!
The store will be stocked with donated clothing, furniture and household items, as well as a wide variety of brand-new products.
By early March, we’ll open the doors to our newest superstore, located at 11954 County Road 105 in Oxford. The 26,000-square-foot store will employ approximately 40 people, creating new jobs.
Besides being a bargain-hunter’s paradise, the store will offer a convenient drive-through donation lane. This will give area residents a place to easily drop off items they no longer need, contributing to a greener community while supporting Goodwill-Suncoast’s services to tens of thousands of people in West Central Florida.
The new superstore is our ninth superstore opened in greater Tampa Bay and Ocala since 2001. In a highly competitive economy, the bright and contemporary superstore model helps to align Goodwill with other discount retailers. Like Goodwill’s other superstores, it’s sure to appeal to a wide cross-section of value-conscious shoppers.
Please “like” us on Facebook for grand opening updates! www.facebook.com/goodwillsuncoast
Thrill shoppers flocked to the grand opening of our Wesley Chapel Superstore. Our Sumter County grand opening will feature prizes, gift card giveaways and more!
On the cover: Our newest superstore will look much like our pictured Wesley Chapel superstore.

You’ll need a lamp shade with fabric removed so it’s down to the “bare bones,” and a pendant light kit.
Light ‘Em Up! How to transform a “naked” lamp shade into a one-of-a-kind home accessory using items you’ll find at Goodwill.
Gather yards and yards of strung beads in the colors of your choice and silk sari yarn, along with old belts and jewelry.
In this example, the beads were randomly strung to wrap the lamp shade and give a spider web effect. The bottom rung was wrapped with silk sari yarn, and parts from belts and necklaces were attached to the bottom of the shade with large jump rings. A vintage silk scarf (from Goodwill, of course!) was wrapped around the electrical cord to hide it. This fun upcycle project could be used as a lamp shade or a chandelier. Just turn on your creativity!

We Want You!
Join Goodwill's Ambassadors Program
What’s adding new members daily, creating meaningful community outreach and involving people in fun networking and fundraising? It’s the Goodwill Ambassadors Program! At Goodwill, we love our volunteers. That’s why we’ve started the Ambassadors Program, a unique opportunity for people to get to know and understand the Goodwill mission, which is to help people achieve their full potential through the dignity and power of work. If you’re looking for ways to give back to the community, develop advocacy skills, practice public speaking, or meet like-minded business, government and social service leaders in our community, the Ambassadors program may be for you. If you’re considering future service on the Goodwill-Suncoast Board of Directors, it’s an excellent introduction to our business model.
Ambassadors activities may include: • Participation in planning and execution of fundraising and “friend”-raising events to benefit Goodwill’s programs and services • Serving as a representative of Goodwill at Ambassadors recruiting and networking events • Hosting lunch n’ learns or evening networking events with your company, your social group, or your personal friends and family • Directing volunteer opportunities within the Goodwill network of programs and services • Supporting future Ambassadors training and orientation programs For more information, please contact Jim Williams, vice president for fund development, at (888) 279-1988 Ext. 1050, or email jim.williams@goodwill-suncoast.com.
New Goodwill Ambassadors are welcomed during a recent “pinning” ceremony. 11
