Finding the
“greatest” in people
Dear Friends of Goodwill, He was a 19-year-old torn between launching a career in music or trying out for the United States Olympic team. Sixty years later, it is apparent that Johnny Mathis made the right choice. He went on to sell 350 million records worldwide. His career is also notable for something else. In 1958, Johnny Mathis’ Johnny’s Greatest Hits was the first greatest hits album ever marketed. At Goodwill Industries-Suncoast, we don’t launch music careers or teach people to sing. We do help people overcome barriers to employment and find the best within themselves. With a hand up, not a handout, we help people achieve their full potential through the power of work. Finding a job helps people gain new hope and dignity and boosts purchasing power. That, in turn, strengthens families and communities. In 2015, Goodwill Industries-Suncoast placed 8,864 people into employment with an economic impact of $259 million. Employment and wages paid resulted in a total consumer impact of 10,626 people going to work and $509 million in economic impact in Central Florida.* Yet we understand that we serve one person at a time. The woman whose job allowed her to put homelessness behind her, the man whose steady job gives him a sense of pride and belonging. You can read some of these stories on pages 5-10. Last year we expanded our employment services, adding a Job Connection Center at the Goodwill store on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg to assist anyone who needs help to find a job. And we more than doubled our BookWorks program, sharing books and the joy of reading with nearly 20,000 children to prepare them for success in tomorrow’s workforce. Meanwhile, we continued to increase our retail presence, opening our Clearwater store in March 2016 and making preparations to open three additional stores within the next 18 months. It is the sales from these stores that fund our services. It is you who keeps us at the “top of the charts!” Through it all, there is a consistent goal … to help people become the greatest version of themselves. And that’s music to our ears.

HUBERTA REJOUIS 9
Huberta’s last name is pronounced “rejoice,” and that’s exactly what she’s doing these days! About two years ago “Berta” was laid off from her job as a respiratory therapist. Already living paycheck to paycheck, the job loss forced her into homelessness. Berta lived in her car while her two young children stayed with a friend. After three months, desperation led her to break the law and forge a signature, and she was later jailed for 15 months.
Huberta got the boost she needed at Goodwill’s Job Connection Center.
Once released, Berta searched for employment all over Pinellas County. But every time “it was like a wall I couldn’t get through,” she says. Until the day she walked into Goodwill’s Job Connection Center (JCC) and met a Goodwill employment specialist. “The specialist smiled at me and that opened the door
…I was welcomed as if I was a person who just came from college, not a convict.” With lots of job leads and a professional resume prepared by the JCC, Berta landed a full-time position within two weeks. She now works as a housekeeper for a beachfront condominium complex. She knows the job is a stepping stone buts vows “I will always keep a job no matter how big or small.” Her plan is to work her way back to a position as a respiratory therapist. In the meantime, she says, she has not become bitter, but better. “I cannot thank the Job Connection Center enough, the service there is second-to-none,” she says. “It’s well-needed and I pray you’ll be here for a good long time.”
Now I am stronger, Now I am wiser I am better, so much better I made it –Huberta’s “theme song” is Never Would Have Made It

GARY COOPER 7
As customers pour into the Winn-Dixie supermarket in Tarpon Springs, they call out “Hey Gary!” to the store employee gathering carts. “Hey there!” Gary Cooper answers back, then turns to explain where each customer is from and how long he has known them. With a friendly smile, happy attitude and 21 years on the job, it’s no wonder Gary is on a first-name basis with many regular shoppers. He began working at a different Winn-Dixie nearby before transferring to this one on Pinellas Avenue. Goodwill was critical during that transition, convening a conference to bring Gary’s circle of support together to ensure the move would be a smooth one.
Gary has received the job support he needs from Goodwill for 21 years.
“I didn’t mind changing places,” he says.
“As long as I have a job it’s all good!” In April of 1995 Gary entered Goodwill’s Supported Employment program that helps adults with disabilities find and keep jobs. That August, he began with Winn-Dixie as a front-end clerk and bagger. His Goodwill job coach says Gary is a flexible team-player praised by the store’s management team. Gary lives with his mother. In his spare time he attends church service and participates in educational classes from The Grow Group, a non-profit organization that provides vocational rehabilitation services to Floridians. Gary says he’ll retire in a few years, but in the meantime: “A lot of people know me and like me here. I always try to be nice to everyone!”

NAOMI BROWNELL-COX 5
Naomi Brownell-Cox was a young mother of five when her husband passed way unexpectedly. Soon after, her mother succumbed to cancer after a 19-year battle.
Naomi’s life dramatically turned around while at Goodwill.
In deep mourning and with five children looking to her for direction, Naomi felt suddenly hopeless. She turned to drugs to numb her agony. That drug abuse eventually led to her arrest on a possession charge, and the arrest landed her in Goodwill’s Tampa Bay Community Corrections Center’s (TBCCC) work-release program in St. Petersburg.
That’s where Naomi’s dramatic turnaround began. At TBCCC she attended substance abuse classes and was required to find a job. Working as a server at a local restaurant chain she was able to save $3,500 and send her daughter $450 for a prom dress – all while finishing out her prison sentence.
Naomi has since completed her sentence, kept her job, and is reunited with her five children. Her oldest daughter is off to college and her high school kids are in honors classes. Naomi attends Narcotics Anonymous meetings with her kids because “it’s important for them to be knowledgeable about my addiction and my recovery, and to know that prison isn’t the only way to live sober.” In the meantime, she says, “I have my whole life ahead of me. I’ve stopped watching reruns and I’m on to the next season!”
I won’t give up on us Even if the skies get rough I’m giving you all my love I’m still looking up Naomi’s “theme song” is I Won’t Give Up

More than 800 hippies took to the streets for our
inaugural Hippie Dash 5k & Flower Child Fun Run. See more about this groovy event on page 15. We opened an innovative Job Connection Center right inside our St. Petersburg Superstore on Central Avenue, where a number of services and workshops are free to local job seekers. Read more about the Center on pages 13 and 14. Twice in the past year Goodwill and Feeding Tampa Bay joined together to help feed kids and families in the Tampa Bay and surrounding areas. The food drives collected more than 3,200 pounds of donated food, enough to provide 2,676 meals. Our popular St. Petersburg store on Gandy Blvd. had a Grand Re-Opening! We added an additional 3,000 square feet of retail space, along with an improved floor plan plus a new drive-through donation area that makes it quicker and easier for donors to drop off donations. 11

Hundreds of costumed partygoers attended our Ghoulwill Bash Carnival of Dread fundraiser in October. They were treated to a “Midway of Dread runway show, great silent auction options and much more. Our community partners continued to offer great deals for Goodwill donors. Thank you to The Florida Aquarium, the Florida State Fair and Dinosaur World for their support and collaboration! Kitty Bruens of Wildwood, one of the first BookWorks volunteers in Sumter County, is our Volunteer of the Year. The New Tampa Newcomers is our Volunteer Group of the Year, and HSN is our Corporate Philanthropic Volunteer Organization of the Year. Coppertail Brewing Co., a craft beer brewery in Ybor City, teamed up with our Life Skills Development program for adults with disabilities in Lakeland. Participants in the program are performing customized contract work for Coppertail while acquiring employability skills.

New Release
O
ur innovative new center brings the Goodwill mission (connecting people with jobs) inside our retail store.
In a small meeting room at Pinellas Hope, a homeless shelter, two Goodwill employees are teaching a packed crowd about resume creation and interview skills. When the class is over, the two are ready to sit down and help the shelter residents type up a resume for instant use. It’s the kind of hands-on help that is transforming the lives of people who are in dire need. The classes, and others like them, are offered by our new Job Connection Center. All of the Center’s services, both on- and off-site, are free to local job seekers. The Center is a local, community based place where people can comfortably job search in a supportive environment. It offers career planning and exploration and assists job seekers to identify paths to their careers of interest. It also offers reading, math and financial literacy options as well as employability workshops. In addition, the Center is a place for job holders or job seekers to simply get answers regarding local services – such as where to find childcare, transportation, and training.
Employability workshops are held at the center and off-site.

Chart Topper! n May 21, we held the Hippie Dash 5k & Flower Child Fun Run, our first ever road race to raise funds and increase awareness of the Goodwill mission. The groovy event exceeded everyone’s expectations, with an amazing 864 runners registered! Hundreds more Goodwill program participants joined the Hippie Dash at no charge, for a total of more than 1,000 runners, walkers and rollers. A post-race survey of runners showed that 100 percent would like to do the run again next year! The Hippie Dash 5k was billed as 3.1 miles of Peace, Love & Goodwill. The theme was inspired by the 1969 Woodstock concert and its 3 days of Peace & Music. Runners dressed in their hippie best to win prizes, and brought their kids along for a Flower Child Fun Run. Even dressed-up hippie canines walked the course! A DJ spun 1960s-era tunes and all runners and walkers got a groovy medal, branded t-shirt, and a laid-back after party and awards ceremony. The race was held in the historic waterfront downtown of
Gulfport, Florida, the perfect funky location for a counterculture meet up. In just the first year, the Hippie Dash is already the largest road race ever held in the town. The race also allowed runners to participate virtually and still receive a medal and t-shirt. We had runners from as far away as Argentina and China spreading the Goodwill vibe! The Hippie Dash grew from a strong partnership Goodwill’s Tampa Bay Community Corrections Center has with the race directors of the annual St. Anthony’s Triathlon. Because of the many hours of volunteerism the corrections clients have put in at the triathlon and other races, the race directors provided their advice and guidance free of charge. Marketing for the event began early, with postings on nearly every running website, donated TV and newspaper ads, and a strong social media presence.
