“Heroes help people and that’s what I want to do.”

O

ne day I want to be the hero,” says Joseph Langford, who goes by the name Earl. “Heroes help people and that’s what I want to do.”

To Earl’s mom, and all those who know him at Goodwill’s Life Skills Development program in Ocala, he already is a hero. “I’m so proud of him, he doesn’t give up on anything,” says Earl’s mom, Wanda. “He has done things here I never knew he could do.” Earl came to the Goodwill program for adults with disabilities in 2012 to learn skills that would help him become more independent. Other programs, his mom says, had given up on him or failed to help. But at Goodwill, Earl thrived. He learned new work skills and eventually worked up to staffing the program’s “Good Dogs” hot dog cart that teaches participants hands-on food service skills.

Earl, 29, has transitioned from Life Skills and with the help of Goodwill’s Supported Employment staff, he now works part-time at Cracker Barrel. “They told me I was going to get a job, and I got it!” Earl says. He is proud to be out of the house and earning his own money. His mom continues to proudly watch her son make strides. “Everything changed when he came here,” she says. “He’s come so far – his behavior, his work ethic, everything. If it wasn’t for this program I don’t know where he would be.”

“I was scared …but they were so patient!”

W

hen Joe and Bernice Anderson, a retired couple from St. Petersburg, found themselves going to the bank to make withdrawals far more often than they were making deposits, they knew a change was in the cards. But for seniors, job searching can be a daunting and unfamiliar task. Traditional newspaper want ads are all but gone and statistics say it takes older workers longer to find a job once unemployed. And businesses tend to hire younger employees, although both Joe and Bernice retired after decades of experience with General Motors. Luckily the Anderson’s job search landed them in Goodwill’s Job Connection Center, where an employment specialist quickly got them on the right track. “She forced me to get on the computer,” Joe said “I was scared…but they were so patient!”

Joe had two interviews in one day with help from the Job Connection Center and within just a few days, he had five job offers to choose from. “They were blowing my phone up. I didn’t know which way to go!” he laughs. He ended up choosing a job with Walmart, where he was recently honored as employee of the month. For Bernice, the results were equally as stellar. With the help of the Job Connection Center staff she ended up with four job offers at once! She now enjoys her cashier job at a local grocery chain. “I don’t know if I would’ve enjoyed looking for work until I went to the Job Connection Center,” she said. “I can’t say enough about them. They’re so happy to help.”

I

have good news, Claudia Hiers said shyly. “Yesterday I got a plaque!”

The plaque Claudia is so proud of celebrates her 10 years as a Goodwill employee. For a decade the 56-year-old has worked as a processing associate at the Goodwill Superstore in Lakeland. She works three days a week and has never once been late. In fact, she comes in early to say good morning to everyone and stays to enjoy lunch with her peers.

“I like what I have!”

“I like it here, it’s very nice,” she says. When Claudia first came to Goodwill she was extremely shy and had never had a job. She first gained work experience assembling mops and performing other work activities at Goodwill’s Life Skills Development program for adults with disabilities in Lakeland. Eventually, her drive for independence led her to try for a job at the Goodwill Superstore.

Her decade of working and earning a paycheck has enhanced her life in many ways – she shares an apartment with two friends, goes bowling every Saturday, loves to shop at Target and takes a Carnival cruise every year to the Bahamas. “I like Goodwill, I like to come to work,” she says. “I like what I have!”

Our amazing Takin’ it

to the

Streets

Hundreds of “hippies” took to the streets of Gulfport for our second-annual Hippie Dash 5k, 1 mile Walk, Woof and Roll and Flower Child Fun Run. A most excellent time was had by all!

Hello,

Sebring!

The community of Sebring welcomed us with open arms as we opened a Highlands County store. Not only did the superstore create about 30 new jobs, adjacent space also serves as a hub for BookWorks, our childhood literacy program that gives books to children from low-income families.

J. A. G.

Takes Off ! Our Junior Ambass adors of Goodwill program got off to a great start! High school students volunteered during the summer, to learn about all we do and earn service hours.

Goodwill and Feeding Tampa Bay joined forces to create My Mobile Market, an innovative “g r o c e r y s t o r e o n wheels” that brings food to areas in need. Learn more about My Mobile Market on page 15.

Year in Review! Ghoulwill was a

Bash !

With a new venue on a luxury yacht, our Ghoulwill Bash Ship of Ghouls fundraiser was a Halloween cruise to remember. Guests enjoyed a delicious buffet, free drinks and lots of fun!

Thanks

to Our Volunteers Laura Gage was named our Volunteer of the Year for her passionate service to our BookWorks childhood literacy program. In 2016 Laura spent an astonishing 122 hours reading to 456 kids and distributing 2,773 books! The Kiwanis Club of Brandon was named Volunteer Group of the Year in honor of more than a decade devoted to volunteering for BookWorks.

Community

Connections Our partnerships with The Florida Aquarium, Florida State Fair and Dinosaur World allowed us to offer great dis counts to our donors all year round.

Nailed It! Our programs for people with disabilities again earned a three -year accreditation by CARF International, the highest endorsement that can be awarded to agencies providing comm unity integrat ion and employment ser vices for people with disabilities.

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs!

More than 30 employers participated in a community job fair hosted by Goodwill in honor of the nation wide Goodwill Industries Week. Job seekers were able to get a wide array of free jobrelated services through our Job Connection Center.

! s e o r e h r Supe The Sensational Shopper Spurred by a sense of fashion, a love of variety, and the undeniable thrill of the hunt, the Sensational Shopper knows just how to swoop in, save money and empower others with their purchases. They quietly search the aisles of our stores and outlets, knowing their purchases are helping people in their local communities.

The Philanthropic Partner These passionate individuals and companies know that with great power comes great responsibility. With benevolence and big hearts they spring into action to support the Goodwill mission. They are tough to classify as they appear in many forms – as event sponsors, community partners, volunteers and even legacy donors.

We’re We’re on on aa Roll! Roll! My Mobile Market is the store that comes right to your door! Antonia Rodriguez stepped out of the My Mobile Market “grocery store on wheels” at its September launch. She had a bag full of cereal, pasta, jelly, Vienna sausages and chunk chicken. Her bill: $7.25. “This is a wonderful service!” she said. The grand opening gave Antonia and other residents of New Life Village a first taste of how My Mobile Market operates. The truck provides both fresh and shelf-stable foods at a fraction of grocery store prices to areas that are underserved and impacted by barriers such as food costs, mobility, transportation and language. New Life Village is a Tampa community designed for families raising foster and adopted children.

The innovative “pop-up market” is a collaboration between Feeding Tampa Bay and Goodwill-Suncoast that takes job training, food distribution, and the creation of healthy communities to a new level. The “market” is staffed in part by participants in Goodwill’s Life Skills Development program, such as Shaniece, who is getting the skills and training she needs to help her transition to community employment. Shaniece’s skills trainer says she is very eager to learn the job and loves meeting and helping customers. Shaniece has even developed the confidence to give feedback on how My Mobile Market processes can be improved. My Mobile Market was made possible through the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay “big idea” grant, awarded to innovative, collaborative projects that address basic needs such as hunger and housing.

My Mobile Market delivers fresh food to underserved areas. It also helps people like Shaniece acquire the skills and training needed for community employment.
