In a socially distanced world, Air Force veteran Ceylin Brooks made a soft landing into civilian life as a receptionist and information technology student.

PAGE   5

AN AIR FORCE VETERAN FINDS HER CIVILIAN WINGS. AN EXCEPTIONAL NEEDS STUDENT TEACHES OTHERS. Ceylin Brooks’ new prospects began with a visit to our Job Connection Center. Colin Shetter’s strong potential came to light during our Project SEARCH program. Now the two young adults are thankful for their good fortune and eager to see what their futures hold.

Ceylin

CONNECTING TO JOB SEEKERS A young Air Force veteran gets help navigating civilian careers When Ceylin Brooks decided to leave the Air Force after serving for six years, she moved from the Hurlburt Field Air Force installation in northwest Florida to Tampa. The transition to civilian life was a little difficult, especially when it came to looking for a job. While searching to find a new position, a friend told her about Goodwill’s Job Connection Center in Riverview. The help she got there was an instant game-changer. “I’m telling you, I got the job, so it works!” In fact, with input and advice from Job Connection staff, Ceylin soon landed two job interviews. Best of all, she received offers for both positions! She chose to go with a full-time receptionist position at a day spa, but, she says, that’s just the beginning. She’s also enrolled in training that leads to Google IT Support certification, funded by a scholarship through a Google and Goodwill partnership.. The most beneficial advice she received was from Goodwill’s Job Connection employment specialist Raymond Steward, who is himself an Air Force veteran. With his help, Ceylin was able to modify the jargon of her “very military” resume to align more with the civilian work force. She also learned interviewing tips and how to target her resume depending on the position she wanted. “I felt very welcome, as if there was no such thing as a dumb question,” she says. “The Job Connection Center was a super big help!”

Colin

CONNECTING TO YOUNG ADULTS A young man begins working on his career and his dreams Colin Shetter, 21, has a new job and big dreams. He’s saving money to buy a car so he can take a girl on a date, buy a house with a fence, a couch, a big TV and a push mower for yardwork. In his last year of high school, Colin enrolled in Project SEARCH in Ocala, a program that provides on-the-job-training for high schools students with disabilities. Project SEARCH is a partnership between Goodwill-Suncoast, Florida Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Marion County Public Schools and host sites Hilton Ocala and Bridgewater Park Health and Rehabilitation Center. “It’s just cool,” Colin says. “I thought I’d do a great job.” And he has. During the program at the Bridgewater Park host site, Colin rotated through housekeeping, floor technician and touched briefly on maintenance before the coronavirus struck and the program was cut short. But because of his work ethic and positive attitude, Colin made a lasting impression and was offered a position as floor technician at Bridgewater Park. “I like doing floor tech and I like that it’s a career,” he says. Colin has progressed to the point that he is now mentoring other Project SEARCH students, and he looks forward to moving up to a maintenance position. “Project SEARCH trains you how to do the job, get the job, and it shows you things in life,” he says.

Our Year

CONNECTING TO THOSE IN CRISIS…

CONNECTING TO OUR COMMUNITY…

Help for the Bahamas

A Busload of Happy Thrifters

We were thrilled to present a check for $26,360 to the Red Cross to aid relief efforts for people in the Bahamas devastated by Hurricane Dorian. The donation was thanks to our generous shoppers who rounded up their purchases to support the Bahamas. Donations from our Round Up program usually go to support Goodwill-Suncoast President and CEO our services to help Deborah Passerini presented the check to people get jobs. Red Cross Regional CEO Eric Corliss and Regional Philanthropy Officer Robb Resler.

Two Tons of Food In April we collected 4,507 pounds of nonperishable food at our stores and donation centers in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties for people in need during the COVID-19 crisis. The donations helped supply Feeding Tampa Bay’s community outreach programs.

About 60 “happy thrifters” descended on our 34th St. superstore in St. Petersburg as part of a “Mystery Resale Shopping Bus Tour” in February. The tour is organized by Happy Thrifter magazine. The shoppers enjoyed light refreshments, learning about Goodwill’s services, and left with a great impression of Goodwill and lots of wonderful treasures from the superstore.

Tampa Bay Lightning employees enjoyed a “Tailgate” party with games and barbeque alongside our Life Skills clients.

Goodwill Ambassadors pitched in for a beach clean-up.

in review Onward, Online! Our e-commerce division, based out of our Tampa distribution center, grew immensely this year and allows us to connect to Goodwill supporters nationwide. Our online store now ranks 56 in sales out of the 139 Goodwills participating. And, it has grown from a staff of one employee to six. The site mainly sells jewelry but will soon add collectibles.

A SEA of Learning

In November we hosted the Southeast Association of Goodwills for its annual SEA Conference. The event, held in beautiful St. Pete Beach, was rich with experiences, conversation and learning. With a strong focus on the future and technological changes and challenges, it sparked innovative ideas for keeping the Goodwill mission thriving and viable.

Young Ambassadors Our Junior Ambassadors of Goodwill (JAG) program offered 185 high schools students with 5,072 hours of volunteer work as they learned about the Goodwill mission.

CONNECTING TO INNOVATE… Innovative Ideas Goodwill was chosen by Synapse Florida to benefit from a “Synapse Challenge” that invited innovators to help solve one of our organizational issues. We asked for help with inventory tracking and after reviewing many great solutions, we chose Christina Dills of Smart Edge Technologies as the innovation challenge winner. She took home the $7,000 prize money provided by the SunTrust Foundation. We benefited from learning about her automated inventory control and check-out systems!

CONNECTING TO JOBS Job Center No. 2 Our second Job Connection Center opened inside our new Riverview superstore in July, offering free services to job seekers and employers. The center, like its counterpart in St. Petersburg, is a place where job seekers can access resources and develop skills to help with employment success.

JET Certified launch A new segment of our JET program (short for Job, Education & Training) launched, called JET Certified. The program is for students and adults with learning difficulties or career obstacles. It offers paid, hands-on experience leading toward certification in Hospitality, Food Service and Retail careers. The program is currently offered in Marion and Citrus counties.

How our Job Connection Centers pivoted in a distanced world What do you do when your service model is mainly helping people hands-on and face-to-face, and suddenly that model is no longer an option? That was the dilemma faced by the staff of our Job Connection Centers located inside two of our superstores. As our retail stores began closing, unemployment numbers began skyrocketing. Suddenly our most needed service couldn’t serve anyone at all. Clearly a new delivery model had to be imagined then created. After a few weeks of work we were able to launch a new website, myjobconnection.org, and offer virtual job services to help as many job seekers as possible. Job seekers can now find up-to-date information on community services to help them navigate issues related to unemployment, as well as tools and resources to augment

PAGE  11

job searches and employment skills. The site contains access to job boards, resume help – including the ability to upload a resume for free feedback – and online certification courses to help increase employability. The website also has a live chat portal that allows Goodwill employment specialists to assist people immediately. A dedicated phone line was also implemented to help those who may be uncomfortable with computers. As our stores have reopened, the virtual services remain an important complement to in-person services. We’re now able to serve more job seekers than ever before, including those who are within our service area but not near a physical Job Connection Center. “The Job Connection Center was a super big help to me,” says Ceylin Brooks. She was able to get the help she needed to land a job during the pandemic. Read more about her story on pages 6 and 7.
