Heart and Hustle 2020 was a tough year and unlike one I have ever seen. I don’t think anyone could have predicted what we all had to face during COVID-19. The challenges that we were confronted with as an organization made us look at every aspect of our operations to ensure that we were the most efficient and effective with our resources. While 2020 was a challenge, it also gave us the opportunity to hustle and pour our heart into ensuring that we were still able to meet our mission and serve New Mexicans throughout the state, who in many ways needed our services more than ever. We were able to be creative, flexible, and work as a team across departments in a way we never have before. Despite 2020’s challenges, it did have its positive points. I had the pleasure of seeing employees express their voices through the power of voting, I heard thoughtful conversations regarding diversity, inclusion, and understanding, and I witnessed a new level of compassion, concern, and empathy throughout the organization. In addition, the organization experienced an abundance of GOOD will; more specifically, we received a generous donation, the largest gift in our company’s history, and we

Meet a New Mexican we helped When Jeanne N. applied to the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), she was looking for a resource to assist her with job training and employment. She had been out of the workforce for several years and had dealt with illness, homelessness, and substance abuse during that time. When her application was selected for enrollment, she was elated to get started but lacked the necessary

had a true commitment from the community through unprecedented levels of donations. A lot happened over the course of 2020, all of which could not have been achieved without all of you. To quickly recap, we successfully relocated our Clearance Corner; we were able to keep our customers, donors, and employees safe; we were able to pay all of our employees during COVID-19 related shutdowns. Further, we began the research and process of opening an e-commerce site; we transitioned technology to support services and operations; we served over 13,000 individuals in our programs and services and placed 1,124 individuals in jobs throughout the state. And finally, we were able to end the year financially healthy. Not to mention, all of this happened during a pandemic with a new leadership team. While it certainly was not the year I was expecting, I am honored for the opportunity to serve as the new President and CEO. I am excited about the growth, opportunities, and ability to meet our true potential as a local nonprofit serving the state of New Mexico as we move forward. I am beyond grateful to our employees for the hustle and heart they showed in 2020, and I continue to be amazed by the support of our donors and customers. Goodwill would not be able to change the lives of so many New Mexicans.

documentation to enroll. She had saved enough money to pay the fee to obtain her birth certificate, but she needed assistance to pay the fee for her state ID. A SCSEP coordinator referred Jeanne to Albuquerque Healthcare for the Homeless, which paid for her state ID. When her identification arrived, she was able to begin her enrollment. When she began with SCSEP, she was placed at Barela’s Senior Center as a kitchen assistant to learn the skills she’d need to work in a restaurant environment. She was enthusiastic, positive and eager to contribute to the community. Her supervisor was impressed with her work ethic and her positive attitude. Jeanne established a good working relationship with patrons and her coworkers. Recently, she submitted an application with the City of Albuquerque to become a permanent employee at Barela’s Senior Center. In addition to thriving in her work placement, Jeanne is recovering from her substance abuse. She has a place to live and potentially permanent employment with Barela’s Senior Center. We thank Jeanne for sharing her story!

Goodwill’s Mission

We’re a local nonprofit on a mission to provide skills training, job development, and social services to New Mexicans. Our free programs and services are funded primarily by revenue generated through the sale of donated clothing, housewares, furniture, and gently used items in our 15 stores and 14 donation centers. Every time you make a donation or a purchase in one of our stores, you help someone secure community employment or gain access to social services.
