A GUIDE FOR OWNERS & TRAINERS 2015

THE QATAR GOODWOOD FESTIVAL

Welcome To Goodwood Proudly boasting an illustrious history and heritage, Goodwood is an inspirational, unique venue that has often been described as the world’s most beautiful racecourse. I am delighted that Qatar should have decided to play a significant part in Goodwood’s position as one of the finest racing experiences in the world. Goodwood has, for more than 200 years, been about the best racing in the most English of settings, accessible to everyone. Our partnership with Qatar will make an enormous contribution to horseracing in the UK. Royalty, celebrities, sporting heroes, statesmen and diplomats have all enjoyed visiting Goodwood. It now gives me great pleasure to invite some of the very best overseas owners and trainers to be a part of this truly great horseracing festival.

Lord March Owner of Goodwood

ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT AND VALUABLE MEETINGS IN THE WORLD WITH TOTAL PRIZE MONEY OF £4.5 MILLION Widely acknowledged as the sporting and social highlight of the summer season, the Qatar Goodwood Festival – known affectionately as ‘Glorious Goodwood’, takes place over five thrilling days in late-July.

In December 2014, an exciting and lucrative 10-year partnership with Qatar was announced by Goodwood and this has seen over £2 million being invested into prize money for eight key races during the Qatar Goodwood Festival 2015 as well as a commitment to increase this year-on-year.

Total prize money on offer for the week now totals £4.5 million, with Qatar once again demonstrating its passion and support for British racing.

The Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes has a total prize fund of £ 1 million, cementing its position as one of the most valuable mile races in the world, while the Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes is worth £600,000, making it the most significant mid-summer race for fillies and mares.

The Qatar Stewards’ Cup is the headline handicap of the week with prize money totalling £250,000.

Each Group 2 feature race, The Qatar Lennox Stakes, The Qatar Goodwood Cup and The Qatar King George Stakes are worth £300,000, recognising their recent records for attracting some of the best horses at their respective distances.

The Qatar Sussex Stakes, The Qatar Goodwood Cup and The Qatar Nassau Stakes will remain part of the prestigious QIPCO British Champions Series.

“Since I first went racing at Goodwood I was taken by its beauty and the racing scene. It is the most beautiful racecourse in the world and I am so glad that it will now host some of Europe's best racing. I've had many successes over the years and love racing there.” Luca Cumani

THE FEATURE RACES Qatar Goodwood Festival Fact File • • • •

Tuesday 28 July to Saturday 1 August 2015. £4.5 million in prize money. Staged at one of the world’s most glamorous and picturesque venues. Two Group 1 races and five Group 2 races plus a £250,000 sprint handicap. • The headline race, the £1 million Group 1 Qatar • Sussex Stakes, is a career-defining contest won by the European Horse Of The Year in three of the last four seasons. • Overseas-trained horses have done well here in recent seasons: the Australian mare, Ortensia, landed the Qatar King George Stakes in 2012 while French fillies have finished second in three of the last eight renewals of the Qatar Nassau Stakes.

An Unrivalled Racecourse The racecourse at Goodwood is meticulously prepared by Clerk of the Course, Seamus Buckley, and his highly skilled team using their collective wealth of experience to create a fantastic racing surface. Since its inauguration 12 years ago, the Goodwood Racecourse Groundstaff team has won the Neil Wyett Grounds Awards on three occasions and been second seven times – on a points basis they are now the outright winners of this prestigious trophy. The course benefits from an artificial watering system.

The track’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse – the fluent mover, rather than the big, long-striding runner, and this applies especially in short races and when the going is fast.

“In terms of beauty in Europe, it’s hard to pick between Goodwood and Deauville. I think those two tracks are charming, historical. Goodwood with its panoramic view, and undulating course… it’s just a fantastic place.” Barry Irwin, owner of Team Valor International (USA)

It was a privilege to run Ortenisa there, and her win in the 2012 King George Stakes was an important part of her successful season in Britain. We would love to return to Goodwood, especially as we have heard about the increased purses.” Paul Messara, Trainer of Ortensia (AUS)
