QATAR GOODWOOD FESTIVAL 2 020
Foreword The 2020 Qatar Goodwood Festival was filled with inspiring performances however, the COVID-19 pandemic meant it ran without a crowd and only trainers, jockeys and owners present. An exhilarating opening day saw Frankie Dettori steer Stradivarius to win the Group 1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup for a fourth consecutive time for trainer John Gosden. On the same day, the Charlie Appleby trained Space Blues turned heads as clear-cut winner of The Qatar Lennox Stakes. Battleground showed his rivals a clean pair of heels as he ran out as impressive winner of The Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes. The spectacle continued on Wednesday as Mohaather showed exceptional talent winning a dramatic Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes under Jim Crowley for trainer Marcus Tregoning and owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum. Steel Bull delighted connections as he quickened in the final furlong to claim The Markel Insurance Molecomb Stakes, pipping rival Ben Macdui to the post for Irish trainer Michael O’Callaghan. Thursday saw trainer Clive Cox and jockey Adam Kirby repeat their 2019 success in the Group 2 Qatar Richmond Stakes this time with Supremacy who beat well contested favourite Yazaman. The Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes, gave Donnacha O’Brien reason to celebrate as Fancy Blue soared past rivals to become the Irish trainer’s first winner in the UK. The Aidan O’Brien trained Mogul recorded his first victory as a three-year-old under Ryan Moore in a thrilling edition of The John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes. On Friday, the outstanding Charlie Hills trained sprinter Battaash won the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes for the fourth year in succession setting a new course record of 55.62 seconds. The final day of the Festival saw the John Gosden trained Enbihaar claim her second consecutive win in the Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes after overhauling Snow. The Unibet Steward’s Cup saw 22-1 shot Summerghand triumph in a field of 27 for trainer David O’Meara and jockey Danny Tudhope as he held off challengers to win by a head. To round off the festival, Cieren Fallon prevailed on board Muraad for the second consecutive year in The LG Apprentice Handicap. The 2020 Qatar Goodwood Festival will be long remembered for both Stradivarius and Battash winning for a fourth time and the record of five wins in the same races could well be achieved next year. We would like to thank you very much for your support, especially considering the circumstances and we look forward to another successful and more recognisable Qatar Goodwood Festival in 2021.
The Duke of Richmond & Gordon
“I cannot think of a more beautiful racecourse than Goodwood on a summer day. I feel very fortunate to have won some of Goodwood’s biggest races, but Battaash winning a remarkable fourth King George Qatar Stakes is a day I will never forget.” JIM CROWLEY, LEADING FLAT JOCKEY
“Goodwood is right up there amongst my favourite meetings of the year. The setting amongst the downs is breathtakingly beautiful with the views right out over to the Isle of Wight. In a normal year there is a great, stylish garden party atmosphere which compliments the top notch racing. It was a shame not to have crowds there this year especially with superstars Stradivarius and Battaash winning again but I still loved being there and presenting from the most glorious location looking out over the parade ring and down to the sea. My favourite moment of the week was the tactical masterclass from Frankie Dettori getting Stradivarius out of a pocket in the home straight to win his fourth straight Goodwood Cup.” FRAN CESC A C U M A N I , PRES EN TER I T V R A C ING
“Its always wonderful to have winners at Goodwood and especially Battaash’s 4th King George Stakes this year. It was a fantastic effort by Goodwood to make racing as pleasurable as possible during the Covid 19 pandemic.” CHARLES HILLS, LEADING RACEHORSE TRAINER

3)
We d n e s d a y 2 9 J u l y 2 0 2 0 The Markel Insurance Molecomb Stakes is named after part of the Goodwood Estate and for nearly half of the 20th century the race was restricted to fillies. The Maktoum family celebrated a first-ever Group victory when Hatta won the 1977 renewal for Arundel trainer John Dunlop, while the brilliant Marwell won the last fillies-only race in 1980. Fillies have continued to do well, with 14 successful since 1981, including Hoh Magic who added the G1 Prix Morny in 1994 and Carmine Lake, victorious in 1996 before defeating the best five-furlong sprinters in Europe in the 1997 Prix de l’Abbaye. Enticing triumphed in 2006 and returned to the Glorious Goodwood winner’s enclosure in the 2008 King George Stakes over the same trip, while another speedy filly, Fleeting Spirit, won in 2007 and then took the 2009 G1 Darley July Cup. Among high-class colts to have triumphed was Precocious, who prevailed in 1983 and went on to win the G2 Gimcrack Stakes at York in an unbeaten campaign. Irish-trained horses have been successful six times, with the latest winning raider being the David Wachman-trained Requinto in 2011. Charlie Hills sent out Cotai Glory to win in 2014 in a new two-year-old course record time of 57.30s. Trainer Mark Johnston saddled a first Molecomb Stakes winner in 2016 with Yalta who significantly bettered the course record when passing the post in 57.14s. Another North Yorkshire handler, Karl Buke, landed the 2017 renewal with Havana Grey, The incomparable Lester Piggott gained eight victories in the Molecomb Stakes during his brilliant riding career – the first in 1957 on Abelia and the final one with Precocious in 1983. The shortest-priced winning favourite was 1-8 chance Diableretta in 1949. At the other end of the odds’ spectrum, Hotbee triumphed at 100-1 in 1985. In 2018, Rumble Inthejungle landed the race for Richard Spencer, while in 2019 Liberty Beach rewarded favourite backers with a win for John Quinn and Jason Hart. 2020 saw Steel Bull quicken in the final furlong to pip rival Ben Macdui to the post and claim victory for Irish trainer Michael O’Callaghan.

course cha r act e r istics Goodwood has a straight six furlong course and a longer looped Round Course. The Round Course enters the straight at the four furlong marker by either the Top or Bottom Bend depending on race distance. The two mile five furlong race starts in front of the Stands before running the wrong way down the Straight and then heading out onto the Round Course via the Bottom Bend. Goodwood’s pronounced gradients and sharp bends favour the active, handy type of horse, the fluent mover rather than the big, long striding horse.

Race Summary Significantly has gone close in each of his three starts to date and warrants plenty of respect representing Karl Burke, who won this race in 2017 with Havana Grey, but SARDINIA SUNSET could prove tough to beat in receipt of 3lb. She was a place in front of subsequent Super Sprint winner Happy Romance when fourth in the Queen Mary and justified skinny odds when landing a Listed contest at York last time. She looks rock-solid and will give this a big shake. Internationaldream might go well at longer odds.
