CHAIRMAN’S CORNER Today we welcome the officials, players and supporters of Guisborough Town to North Shields for this mouth watering 1st extra preliminary round of The F.A, Cup. We hope they enjoy their stay here at The Morgue before the long journey home to North Yorkshire. The prize money today is a mouth watering £200 with the winners receiving £1,500 and the runners up £500. I do hope I have that information correct. We did play particularly well against Whickham on Wednesday and deserved the three points. It's always nice to win on your first home game of the season particularly when the visitors are so fancied for promotion this season. It's also worth remembering that we were denied at least a share of the spoils on Saturday by a terrible referee. At least on Wednesday we had a fair ref who was fair for both sides. Although missing most of Wednesday's game due to duties in our clubhouse it really was a treat to see so many supporters in the bar before and after the game.

I do believe we may have had the biggest home gate on the day. Most encouraging and something we need to build on. I do hope the new away kit was welcomed by all. It's a total difference from that of previous season. It's striking and the black socks were an innovation that really was a delight to the entire committee.

Our home kit continues to be sponsored by main sponsors Daren Persson Funeral Services and we have been lucky enough to have our away kit supplied by Northern Power and Gas. We are looking forward to a long and successful partnership with them for a long time to come. Back to today's game and the task ahead. Our visitors will no doubt have many ex Borough players and current Middlesbrough juniors in their ranks. Here's hoping our experience and Wednesday's win will see us pull through to another victory and get us through to the next round. As usual. Up the Robins.

MULLIGAN’S MINUTES sides (not just the kit!) and we were unlucky to lose the game. During the off season, myself and my media team have tried to continue to give you the best service we can by letting you know what is going on behind the scenes! We have signed quite a few players, launched the brand new away kit as well as the brand new website, which I hope you are all enjoying as we aim to have the best media outlet around! August and September is going to be very busy for the media team as myself and Ed are running on all cylinders. This is while we await the arrival of our brand new videographer, Ali who is visiting back home in Qatar. We hope you enjoy today and cheer the Robins on to victory in this very special game, with the winners set to visit either Seaham Red Star or Penrith! Hello and welcome to the new faces and to those who return back here at The Daren Persson Stadium for another season at North Shields FC. Today we welcome the players, management, officials and supporters from Guisborough Town for this special game as we kick off with he Extra Preliminary Round of The FA Cup. This is the first meeting between the two sides in this prestigious competition. For those who attended Sunderland RCA last Saturday, I am sure you will agree that North Shields were the brighter of the two

Lastly, we are delighted to welcome Olivia as our official team mascot today. As a special birthday present, North Shields FC have invited 5-year-old superfan Olivia to lead the teams out in today’s game! We hope she enjoys the game.

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY

The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League. They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900–01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900. After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance. They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic. The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958. North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933–34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3–0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0. A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951 –52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956–57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign. North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runnersup and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas). The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local shipyard worker. (North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was short-lived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium. Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United. The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. This campaign in which Wembley skipper Kevin Hughes made his 300th appearance the side enjoyed a promising mid-season run of results which saw them put pressure on the top three.

GUISBOROUGH TOWN CLUB HISTORY The club was founded in 1973, and, following Sunderland’s FA Cup success in the same year, adopted Red and White stripes as the home colours. The Priorymen began life in the Middlesbrough & District League before joining the South Bank & District League, with the experienced duo of Mick Hodgson and Dennis Wheeler brought in to manage a team with ambition. Mick would go onto manage the team for more than 700 games before he left in 1993 after leading the club through the local leagues to the Northern League, and winning various cups along the way. Town won their first trophy - the North Riding County Cup - in 1976, by beating Smith Dock 1-0 in the Final, with local lad Bryan Hodgson getting the only goal. The following year they joined the Northern Alliance and reached the North Riding Senior Cup Final, eventually losing to Scarborough in a replay following a 1-1 draw in the original tie. The club continued to grow, and after third and second place finishes in the previous two seasons, Guisborough finally won the Northern Alliance League title in 1979/80. The club also reached the Final of the F.A. Vase, going down 2-0 to Stamford in front of a crowd of 11,500 at Wembley. The home semi-final leg against Hungerford Town saw a crowd of 3,112 at the King George V Stadium, which remains a ground record. The club then joined the Midland League, which later became the Northern Counties East League. During a five year stay, Guisborough finished 5 th , 5 th , 12 th , 8 th and 5 th . In 1981 Mark Davis scored his first goal in a Guisborough Town shirt. He would go on to score 340 more, and remains the clubs all-time leading goal scorer on 341 goals. The Priorymen joined the newly formed Northern League Division Two for the 1985/86 season. Mark Davis scored the clubs first ever Northern League goal on 17th August 1985, helping the Priorymen to a 2-0 home victory over West Auckland. Guisborough finished the season in third place. A year later saw promotion, with Guisborough finishing as runners-up to Billingham Synthonia. The 1988/89 season saw Guisborough reach the F.A. Cup First Round proper for the first, and only, time in the clubs history. A crowd of 5,990 watched Bury beat Guisborough 1-0 at Ayresome Park, the home of Middlesbrough F.C. The side also reached the Northern League Cup Final, where goals from Ian Robinson and Craig Gibson gave the Priorymen a 2-1 victory over Tow Law Town at Spennymoor. The Priorymen recorded their highest ever League finish at the end of the 1990/91 season, finishing as Northern League Division One runners-up to Gretna. The same season saw the club win the North Riding Senior Cup for the first time. A solitary goal from Neil Hodgson was enough to see off South Bank in the Final. A year later, Guisborough reached the North Riding Senior Cup Final again, this time losing 3-2 to Scarborough. The Priorymen got their hands on the trophy for a second time in the 1992/93 season with a 2-0 Final victory over Rowntree Mackintosh. Guisborough retained the cup at the end of 1993/94 season with another 2-0 win, this time over Pickering Town. The 1996/97 season had Guisborough dreaming of another trip to Wembley after an F.A. Vase run that took the club to the Semi-Final. Guisborough had seen off Prudhoe Town, Poulton Victoria, Tow Law Town, Wisbech Town and Taunton Town, all in home ties, on route to a 2-0 Semi-Final first leg defeat against North Ferriby United at the KGV. A 1-1 draw in the second leg was enough for the Villagers, setting up a Wembley appearance against Whitby Town. Several lean years followed, and in 2004/05, Guisborough finished bottom of the Northern League First Division, ending an eighteen year stay in the Northern League top flight. The downward spiral continued, and Guisborough finished the 2005/06 season second from bottom. Guisborough finished 9th the following year, and 12th in the 2007/08 season. February 2008 marked a key moment in the clubs rebuilding project. Dean Coates had left his role as Manager, and first team coach Chris Hardy stepped up to take charge of his first game on 9th February 2008. Chardy, as he was affectionately nicknamed, set about the task of restoring the Priorymen's Northern League Division One status, and in his first full season in charge, 2008/09, he set off a trend that would continue throughout his time at the club - the club would go on to better the final league position of the previous year in each season that Chardy was at the helm. After finishing the 2008/09 season in 7 th , Guisborough finished 5 th the year after, before succeeding in their quest for promotion as Chris Hardy guided the team to a 2nd place finish in the 2010/11 season. That season, the Priorymen also won the North Riding Senior Cup for the first time in seventeen years, beating Marske United in the Final. A David Onions header was all that separated the two sides. Back in the Northern League First Division for the 2011/12 season, Guisborough planned on a season of consolidation, and finished the campaign in 16 th . Things continued to steadily improve, and Guisborough finished the 2012/13 season in 11th position, the highlight of which was a 4-1 win over Darlington as 1,350 packed the KGV. The 2013/14 season saw the most prolific strike partnership to ever grace the KGV pitch. Danny Johnson and Mikey Roberts spearheaded the clubs attack, scoring a remarkable 105 goals between them, as the team shot up the League table to finish fourth. Inevitably, bigger clubs came calling, with Roberts joining Spennymoor, and later Whitby, and Johnson moving to Cardiff City at the end of the season. The start to the 2014/15 season was hardly a remarkable one, with Guisborough knocked out of the F.A. Cup at the Extra Preliminary Round stage, and inconsistent League form leading to Guisborough sitting in 12 th position after the opening six games having won two, drawn two and lost two. But a run of twenty League games between November and March propelled the Priorymen into a six-way title fight. Despite topping the table for the majority of the second half of the season, defeats to eventual Champions, Marske United, and fellow title chasers Morpeth Town in the final two games of the season ended the dream of a first Northern League Division One title. The chance to win some silverware was still alive, with a North Riding Senior Cup Final against Middlesbrough still to come, but, unfortunately, Middlesbrough ran out 2-0 winners at the KGV. Chris Hardy left in club to take up the vacant Manager’s position at Whitby Town in December 2015 with his Assistant Manager, Steve Dowling, taking charge of first team affairs at Guisborough. Dowling led the Priorymen to a second consecutive third place finish in the League, and a second consecutive North Riding Senior Cup Final. Middlesbrough once again lifted the trophy, this time with a 3-1 victory at the KGV. The summer of 2016 would ultimately prove disastrous for the Priorymen, with seven first team regulars leaving before a ball had been kicked in the 2016/17 season. A new look squad started the season well with a comfortable 5-2 F.A. Cup Extra Preliminary Round win over Liversedge and an opening League victory against Sunderland RCA, but things soon took a turn for the worse. Guisborough would only win a further two games until Steve Dowling resigned following a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Ryhope C.W. on Tuesday 22nd November 2017, just 357 days after taking up the post. First team coach Chris Fairless stepped up to take charge of the team while the club searched for a new Manager. In his one and only League match in charge, Guisborough beat Whitley Bay 2-1 to move off the bottom of the table. Ten days after Dowling's resignation, and after a healthy interest in the vacant Managers post, Guisborough appointed former Development Side Manager Gary Forster, with Lee Farrington also returning to the club as his Assistant. Forster’s first win came in the Boxing Day derby at Marske United, but two draws and seven defeats in the next nine games left the Priorymen with a lot of work to do to avoid the drop heading into the final six weeks of the season. A run of five wins in the remaining seven games meant that Guisborough finished the season on 34 points and in the final relegation place, just one point behind Washington in 19th . However, this wasn’t the end of the drama. Norton & Stockton Ancients had resigned part way through the 2016/17 season and South Shields won promotion to the EvoStik North, and with only Jarrow F.C. being promoted into the Northern League Second Division, the Northern League was going to be running with just 41 teams across its two divisions for the 2017/18 season. The Northern League recommended to the F.A. that the League have 22 teams in its First Division, and 21 in the Second Division, which would have effectively granted Guisborough a reprieve from relegation. The F.A. however, denied this request, informing the League that Division One would run with 21 teams, and Division Two with 22. Armed with Northern League support, and the knowledge that other League’s at the same level all ran with more or equal numbers it their top divisions, Guisborough appealed the F.A. decision. On 13 th June 2017, officials from the club travelled to Wembley to have their case heard, returning triumphant in the knowledge that the appeal had been successful, and Guisborough Town would still be playing Northern League Division One football for the 2017/18 season. The 2017/18 season saw improvement on the pitch as Gary Forster Managed the side to a 15 th place finish, comfortably clear of the relegation zone.

GUISBOROUGH TOWN SQUAD 2019/20

Ryan Catterick (GK) Ryan is an excellent capture for the Priorymen, signing on a season long loan from Hartlepool United.

Logan Corner (GK)

Matthew Crust (DF)

Charlie Graham (DF)

Logan was spotted by Gary Forster while training for our Under-16 side last season, and the Manager was so impressed with the Guisborough youngster he moved to sign Logan for the first team for the 2019/20 season.

Transferred from Billingham Town in August 2017 and quickly became an imposing figure in the heart if the Guisborough defence. Captained the side at the start of the season while Jordan Nixon was injured.

A young left back with a promising future ahead of him. Charlie transferred from Thornaby last season.

Matthew Lovatt (DF)

Dylan McAvoy (DF)

Josh Rowbotham (DF)

Anthony Snook (DF)

Matty signed for Guisborough from Northallerton Town in December 2016 as Gary Forster looked to strengthen the Guisborough defence. A composed defender with a bright future ahead of him.

A young and enthusiastic full left back with bags of potential. Signed from local football, Dylan gets forward whenever possible and never backs out of a challenge.

Josh joins Guisborough after spending last season with Marske United. Josh is a solid defender who sets himself to a very high standard. He has also gained experience playing for Hartlepool United, West Auckland Town and Billingham Synthonia.

Anthony impressed for the Development Side under Gary Forster’s guidance after joining from Darlington. Possesses the pace to get up and down the right side and the ability with the ball at his feet to causes problems for the opposition defence.

Joe Ferguson (DF) A pacey winger who has rejoined the club from Marske United. Joe made 19 appearances for the club during 2016/17 season, scoring one goal. Can also fill in at left back.

Guisborough born centre back joined from Whitby Town during summer of 2017. Spent his career as a central defender before being deployed as a central midfielder for most of his time with the Priorymen.

An exciting prospect, Louis is a product of our Development Side. An midfielder who will chip in with the goals. Louis has signed for the Priorymen for the season but won’t be seen in a Guisborough shirt very often as he studies in America.

Brandon Holdsworth (MF)

Charlie Marshall (MF)

Steven Snaith (MF)

Joe Taylor (MF)

A young attacking midfielder signed at the start of the season ‘Donny’ is skilful and loves to take on defenders. He missed much of last season after picking up a serious injury, but he has returned looking fit and ready to go.

Charlie spent some time at Thornaby during the 2017/18 season while he continued his development. He returned to the Club last season and some assured performances led to him being named the CLS Young Player of the Year.

A tireless midfielder who signed for Whitby Town following his release from Hartlepool United. He joined the Priorymen in 2015 before returning to Whitby. He spent two years with Whitby before signing for West Auckland Town last season.

A great summer signing for the Priorymen, Joe looks to have all of the qualities that a midfielder needs. He is hard working, strong in the tackle, possesses a great range of passing and is willing to shoot from distance.

Daniel Earl (ST)

John Howard (ST)

Re-signed for the Club in 2018. His last spell with the Priorymen ended after the 2015/16 season. He scored 66 goals in two years at the KGV. He has experience of winning the Northern League title with Marske United.

John had the step up into the first team last season. Another young and exciting prospect at the Club.

Steven Roberts (MF) A product of the Middlesbrough FC Academy, Steve had spells with Billingham Town, Billingham Synthonia and Stokesley. Last seasons top scorer with 23 goals in all competitions.

Sonni Coleman (ST) Sonni signed in the summer from Stockton Town. In five seasons with the Anchors he made 191 appearances, scoring 53 goals. He is tall and quick and with a good touch he is a clinical finisher and scores all types of goals.

Mason McNeill (ST) Quick and strong attacker that makes him a threat when running at defenders. Mase has continued to improve during his time with the Club and was last seasons Players Player of the Year.

MANAGEMENT TEAM Gary Forster (M)

David Onions (ASM)

Gary impressed enormously during his tenure at the helm of our Development Side over four successive seasons between 2011 and 2016. Middlesbrough born Gary left the club following the 2015/16 to take up a recruitment role with Darlington Football Club to improve the club’s Reserve, Under-17 and Under-18 sides. He returned in December 2016 following Steve Dowling’s resignation.

‘DO’ is regarded as a legend at the Club and during his playing days he was one of the top strikers in the Northern League. Dave brings a wealth of Northern League experience to the dugout and will once again prove to be an extremely important asset to Guisborough Town as the Club looks to climb the Northern League ladder.

NORTHERN LEAGUE ROUND-UP By Ed Painter

As the Ebac Northern League season gets into full swing, every team from either division will be still riding on the high that football has finally returned to the North East, following a long and very hot summer. This season, newly promoted Billingham Town, Thornaby and Northallerton Town will have been spending their summers moulding their squads into what they think can be Division One successes. As for the division below, following the reprieves for Durham City and Brandon United, Sunderland West End, Newcastle University and Carlisle City will be making the step up from their respective divisions. At the time of writing this, most teams will have played at least two games each and from what I have seen or heard so far this season, the standard has been set incredibly high. Shildon AFC currently sit on top of the Division One pile, having comfortably beaten Thornaby and Ryhope CW, scoring 13 goals whilst only conceding twice. Only three other teams so far have managed to keep pace with the leaders by remaining unbeaten and credit must go to Hebburn Town, Consett and Sunderland RCA for the starts that they have made. A good guideline to show anyone how competitive this league will be this season is to take a gander at the bottom. Only three teams so far have been unable to pick up any points (Thornaby, Penrith and Northallerton Town). Of those three teams, two have only just been promoted and the other finished bottom of the league last season. The most attention will undoubtedly be paid towards our previous opponents in Whickham. Some seriously impressive signings have been made and when they comfortably beat Newton Aycliffe 3-0 on day one, you could be forgiven for thinking that this was merely the start of a dominant season. For those of you who were in attendance for the North Shields v Whickham game, their hopes received a slight setback when the Robins won 1-0, courtesy of a Kyle Patton penalty. If you thought that Division One was a competitive league to be in, take a look at what is going on in Division Two. After two games, Chester-le-Street Town and Ryton & Crawcrook Albion find themselves in joint first place, having scored and conceded the exact same amount of goals in both their wins. Whilst Chester-le-Street beat Carlisle City 3-0 before seeing off Washington 3-1, Ryton & Crawcrook Albion responded in kind by beating Newcastle University 3-1 and Durham City 3-0. They aren’t on their own at the Division Two summit, however, as Willington, Crook Town and Birtley Town all find themselves on six points a piece. I imagine their coaches will be delighted by their start, however, I do suspect that they wish their players might have been a little more prolific in front of goal. The bottom of Division Two is where Easington Colliery, Heaton Stannington, Esh Winning, Brandon United, Durham City and Carlisle City find themselves. Each of these teams are on zero points, with quick improvements required should they want to steer well clear of a relegation scrap. Brandon and Durham have been there before last season, however, the likes of Heaton especially will not be happy with how things are going.
