ALAN MATTHEWS Media Officer Ed Painter speaks with Alan about what has been a impressive week for North Shields Football Club Today we welcome Tow Law Town to The Daren Persson Stadium as we embark on this season’s FA Vase campaign. We welcome their officials, supporters and players. We hope they enjoy their short stay here before the long journey back to the high spots of County Durham. Like ourselves, The Lawyers have been to Wembley and were indeed finalists in 1998. Another matter of note is that they were the first club to be allowed a team mascot on the day to tread the hallowed turf, sadly the young man passed away recently.
Tow Law play in our second division, but have aspirations to get their club promoted at the end of the current season. Here's hoping these early games follow the same pattern as our successful 2015 campaign in the vase as the winners of today's game will be at home to Northallerton just as we were back then, except then of course we were away in the competition. Tow Law have had a few problems with their pitch, not for the first time, but thankfully those issues have been made safe and they get on with the business at hand on their home games.
These notes are being prepared before the end of the Billingham game on Wednesday so here's hoping we can follow up on that fine victory on Saturday away at Seaham. I understand we had a few knocks on Saturday so hopefully those that were injured had a rest on Wednesday and come back today with all guns blazing. This is a great opportunity to get on the Wembley trail again so let's hope the players put their best foot forward and take us through to the next round. Up The Robins

MARC NASH Media Officer Ed Painter speaks with Marc about what has been a impressive week for North Shields Football Club Good afternoon and welcome to the Daren Persson Stadium for today’s FA Vase tie against Tow Law Town; a side who are familiar with success in this competition. I hope that the players, officials and fans of today’s visitors have a safe journey home after the game. After drawing the opening game of the season against Newton Aycliffe, we have registered successive wins against Seaham Red Star and Billingham Town, scoring seven goals between the two games. It goes without saying that there is a real confidence in the side
at the moment. It has also been great to see both Coleby Shepherd and Robbie Christie make a positive impact on the side. Coleby had a cameo against Seaham before completing 90 minutes at home against Billy Town, while Robbie came on in the final 20 minutes on Wednesday evening and didn’t disappoint. Today will prove to be a very difficult challenge, as both sets of players will be desperate to enjoy a good lengthy run in this competition. After a challenging start to their season, Tow Law will be confident of a result, after beating Birtley Town
While we are a division above, it is absolutely vital that we, as a group, do not take them lightly. We cant afford complacency in any game this season, if we are to have a successful campaign.
Wednesday evening saw us attract a crowd of 270 through the doors and the boys couldn’t have been more happy with the support. With your backing, anything is possible. Enjoy The Game

FA VASE PREVIEW Last season was a difficult one for Bedlington Terriers, with the club struggling to perform in the league. This year has been a different story as they find themselves pushing at the top. They face division rivals Heaton Stannington for a place in the next round. After an impressive start to the season, with the club currently sitting atop the Division One table, Northallerton Town will turn their attention towards cup glory, with league rivals Billingham Town standing in their way. The winner of this tie will face a trip to North Tyneside to face North Shields. Crook Town were one of the clubs to miss out on promotion, due to the Covid -19 pandemic. They have started slow in the league this season so a cup game against Albion Sports could help them refocus. Following two draws from their first two league games, Newton Aycliffe manager Colin Stromsoy will be hoping that his side can spark their season into life when they host North West Counties League side Barnoldswick Town.
Vase game against Garforth Town,
Bishop Auckland have found things difficult this season and currently sit near the bottom of Division .
After finishing second in Divison One last season, Shildon were hoping to start this campaign off on a stronger foot. Two wins, one draw and one loss has them sitting first, with Division Two struggled Chester-le-Street Town standing between them and progression in the FA Vase. In the FA Cup, West Allotment Celtic made others stand up to attention by defeating Penrith on their own soil 3-1. This time around, Allotment welcome their Cumbrian counterparts for an FA Vase clash which could determine whether the Division Two side can consistently compete at the level above them. Since being promoted to Division Two, Sunderland West End have been focused on establishing themselves as a Northern League team. In their second season at this level, they turn their attention to the
That being said, they enjoyed a great 5-0 away win against Kendal Town. If it is cup football they want, cup football they get when Billingham Synthonia visit Heritage Park. After a slow start, Ryton & Crawcrook Albion, under the stewardship of Mark Bullock, have turned things around with a 3-1 league win over Tow Law Town. Today sees Division One Ashington visit Kingsley Park; a side they defeated in last season’s League Cup. Whitley Bay have had a difficult start to their season, after members of their squad were hit with Covid19. With the rest of the league well under way, the Seahorses have barely even begun. Today’s Vase game against Newcastle University could help the three-time champions get up and running.

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY North Shields Athletic was originally formed in 1896, and played initially in the South Shields & District league. They progressed through the Northern Combination, Northern Alliance and North Eastern League and became a major force in North East Football, outside the Football League, moving to play at Hawkey’s Lane around 1900. They originally joined the Northern Alliance, before switching to the North Eastern League in 1908. The club emerged as Preston Colliery F.C. after the Great War, reverting to North Shields A.F.C. in 1928. They enjoyed tremendous local support with a record 12,800 watching the local derby with South Shields in October 1936. Shields won the North Eastern League title in 1950, before the league folded in 1958. Spells in the Midland League and Northern Counties league followed before the club joined the Northern league in the 1964-65 season, finishing third at their first attempt. The Robins moment of crowning glory came in 1969, when they won the FA Amateur Cup by beating Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium. Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey – both laid on by Orrick, a shipyard worker from Byker. The club, which also won the Northern League title and Challenge Cup that same year, were declared joint holders of the European Amateur Cup the following season when two games against Italian Side Almas resulted in a level aggregate score. In 1982, the Robins won 1-0 at Halifax Town in the FA Cup First Round, Bede McCaffrey scoring the all-important goal that year. Walsall were the visitors to Appleby Park in the second round, for only the second time in the club’s history and left with a 3-0 victory. Having moved into the national pyramid by joining the NCEL in 1989, North Shields earned promotion to the Northern Premier League by winning the title in 1992. However, financial problems arose, which meant Appleby Park had to be sold to and lead to the club folding. However, they almost instantly reformed as a new club, thanks to the efforts of local people and many of the current committee. The club, headed by new chairman Richard Slade, sought and gained immediate admission to the Second Division of the Wearside League. They were promoted to the top flight as runners-up in their first season, briefly reverting back to North Shields Athletic for four seasons. They enjoyed success in local cup competitions, too, the Shipowners Cup and NFA Senior Bowl added to that title in the 1998/99 treble-winning season. In 1999, the club moved to Ralph Gardner Park, now known as the Daren Persson Stadium, and began to develop the ground to meet the Northern League standards. Once again known as North Shields FC, the club began to kick on, league runners-up in 2000/01 and winners by eight points the following season. They also continued to collect silverware elsewhere, winning the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup in 2001 and again in 2003. After a fifteen-year absence, the Robins gained promotion back into the Northern League in 2004 following their third Wearside League title and a further Shipowners Cup triumph. After ten years in Division Two, the club belatedly returned to the top tier having narrowly missed out in 2010/11. The Robins shattered records en route to the 2013/14 championship including the Daren Persson Stadium attendance which was 1,312 for the visit of West Allotment Celtic and the presentation of the 2nd division trophy. But better was to come as the Robins swept past the likes of Phoenix Sports, Erith & Belvedere and Highworth Town to reach the 2015 FA Vase final at Wembley. In front of almost 10,000 fans, Shields went behind to Glossop North End, but a late equaliser by Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster’s extra-time finish clinched the coveted trophy for Graham Fenton’s men. The club also finished fourth in division one to cap a memorable season. The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Manager Graham Fenton left the club in September 2016 to join South Shields, with Jon McDonald replacing him as manager. McDonald kept North Shields at the top until early April, losing out to South Shields in the title race. North Shields also lost the Senior Cup to Blyth and the League Cup to South Shields after which Jon McDonald left the club. Shields moved to appoint Assistant Manager, Brian Smith as the new Manager, with Gary Ormston stepping up as Assistant and Andy Gowans joining the coaching set up alongside Wilf Keilty. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. The latest campaign of 2019-2020 before halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the side saw an impressive 4th placed finish with games in hand on the teams above. The team scored 56 goals only conceding 37

FA VASE PREVIEW After impressing last season, Gary Foster’s Guisborough Town have started where they left off. After a disappointing away loss to Whickham in the league, Division Two strugglers Washington will travel to the King George V Ground, with a place in the next round on the line. Jarrow have been on something of a positive wave recently, with Adam Lennox (formerly of Hebburn Town U23’s) leading the line for them. Having firmly established themselves as one of the better Division Two sides, they will be looking to add an impressive FA Vase run to their resume. A trip to Steeton will prove to be a tough test. Carlisle City, who were transferred over to the Northern League at the beginning of last season, performed above expectations last season, finishing in the top eight. This season has seen them start on the same foot, sitting currently in ninth place. With the FA Vase taking precedence this weekend, their attentions turn to facing

North West Counties League side Nelson at Gillford Park.
Current Northern League Division Two pace-setters Birtley Town have been impressive on and off the pitch this season, and look set to push for promotion to Division One this season. Today sees them begin their FA Vase campaign against Squires Gate, who have previous experience of facing Northern League sides, having defeated Whickham 2 -1 in extra time.
Speaking of Whickham, who have performed above expectations this season, given the overhaul their squad has seen since Mark Convery took over the side late last season. Having fallen early on in the FA Vase last season, this year’s away tie against a strong Willington side will prove to be their biggest challenge of the season, as both sides will be up for a cup run.
P14: Official North Shields Match Programme @NorthShieldsFC #HowayTheRobins
An opening day draw against Guisborough Town, a thumping win against Ashington and a narrow defeat against Sunderland RCA have left Stockton scratching their heads as to what has happened. They can steady the ship somewhat when they face a West Auckland Town side who are haemorrhaging goals. West will go into the game with new signings Dennis Knight and Aaron Thompson. After a thumping win away to Seaham Red Star, Consett will be looking for more of the same when they entertain a Newcastle Benfield side which has began the season in impressive form, winning their last game against Newton Aycliffe. Seaham Red Star will be desperate to bounce back after the heavy defeat to Consett. Hebburn will be awaiting them.
HEAD TO HEAD
V TOW LAW TOWN
It has been several seasons since these two sides have faced one another, with the 2016 match at the Daren Persson Stadium proving to be the most recent encounter. Two goals from Dan Wilson, as well as strikes from Ryan Carr and Lee Mason, helped the Robins secure a 4-1 home win in the season which saw North Shields win the NFA Senior Cup. Since then, both sides have gone in separate directions, with North Shields remaining near the summit of Division One, whilst Tow Law Town find themselves in Division Two. The Lawyers, over the years, have enjoyed a favourable record against Shields, winning 32 of the 64 games played; with the other games ending with 15 draws and 17 losses. They also boast a more favourable goalscoring record, with 126 goals well beating the Robins 89.

Sensational second half send Shields second
A sensational second half performance from North Shields saw them comfortably claim all three points, beating Billingham Town 4-1. The Robins entered the break with a narrow lead, after Dan Wilson’s effort took a heavy deflection off Matthew Osmond before beating the keeper. Tom Bexton and Wilson added a third and fourth goal within minutes of each other, handing Shields a commanding lead midway through the second half. Craig Spooner added a fourth to the Robins score, when he calmly placed the ball into the back of the net with ten minutes to go. And despite Danny Boyle’s thunderbolt with moments to spare, Shields were able to comfortably hold on to all three points, sending them up to second. The Robins were looking to build upon a strong performance against Seaham at the weekend and after nine minutes, David Robinson’s effort from the edge of the box was directed wide of the left hand post. Not long afterwards, Coleby Shepherd, who was making his home debut for the club, tried his luck on goal, after dazzling his way through the Billy Town defence, only to see his shot sail over the crossbar. Spooner, who was starting in place of Ryan Carr tonight, was looking to make his mark on the game and almost did so with a speculative effort, but he didn’t connect well enough with the ball and his shot flew harmlessly wide of the goal. Midway through the first half, Billingham Town should have taken the lead, when Alex Bruton connected with a low cross into the box, but a tremendous save from Greg Purvis, followed by an excellent defensive block by Adam Forster, denied the visitors the lead against the run of play. But it was the Robins who entered the half time break a goal up, when a low Cartwright corner found Wilson in the penalty area, whose attempt on goal took a heavy deflection off Osmond before finding the back of the net. With a one goal advantage never secure, the hosts set about trying to double the lead. In the 51st minute, Spooner saw his goal bound effort cleared off the line, after the Billy Town keeper failed to claim a deeply swung corner. Two minutes later, Forster was at the heart of another North Shields attack, snatching the ball off a visiting midfielder, before feeding Cartwright on the right hand side. With Wilson waiting to strike in the penalty area, a defender was able to cut the ball out before the Shields forward could get a strike away. However, only one minute later, the hosts finally had their second of the day. After Shepherd saw his effort parried behind by the keeper, Bexton was able to react quickest from the resulting corner, nodding the ball over the line at the far post, following a goalmouth scramble. Things went from bad to worse for the visitors as only a few minutes later, Shields had their third of the game, when another sliced defensive clearance almost resulted in a second own goal, before Wilson hammered the ball home from a yard out. With North Shields in complete control of the game, it allowed for Marc Nash to make a number of substitutions, including Robbie Christie, who had signed from Newcastle University earlier in the week.
On the stroke of the 80th minute, Shields found themselves four goals in front, after a well-placed through pall found Callum Smith charging in on goal. With Spooner in acres of space in the penalty area, Smith unselfishly squared the ball to his teammate, leaving him with a simple finish. Billingham were left to throw everything at the ball, in search of getting something from the game and in the 85th minute, Boyle fired a thunderous shot from a tight angle past Purvis and into the bottom corner of the net, denying the Shields keeper another clean sheet. Despite being three goals in front with only minutes left on the clock, the hosts weren’t done attacking, with Smith sending the ball skidding across the goal line, after rounding the keeper, before the visiting defence finally recovered. But there wasn’t enough time for either side to register another chance, as the referee swiftly brought the game to an end. P17: Official North Shields Match Programme @NorthShieldsFC #HowayTheRobins

THE INTERVIEW
RYAN CARR Media Officer Ed Painter speaks with Ryan ahead of today’s key FA Vase tie against Division Two Tow Law Town. Loyalty is a trait which is very hard to find in football these days, regardless of the level a team plays at. With more and more money being pumped into the sport, players, especially part timers, are finding that they can earn more money if they move from club to club on a regular basis. The likes of Kevin Hughes, the long term captain of North Shields Football Club, before his retirement in 2019, are few and far between. However, the Robins have been blessed by the loyalty shown by Ryan Carr, who has been one of the mainstays in the team for several years, to date making 224 appearances and scoring 66 goals. He has also played influential roles in some of the club’s greater successes, including the 2016 NFA Senior Cup win over Blyth Spartans. But just like any other player at this level, he has had to balance his football alongside his work, something which has taken on
greater meaning over the summer, with Ryan recently starting his career as a firefighter.
do, with Fozzy playing a key role in helping Ryan adjust to his new career choice.
“I got to a point in my old job where I wasn't enjoying it as much and there wasn't much progressing. I wanted a new challenge,” explained Carr.
“Fozzy and Marc Lancaster (former teammate who now plays for Ashington) have helped me massively with the recruitment process, the training course and now that I'm on station,” he said.
“I was very lucky that the fire service were recruiting at that point and after conversations with people in the service I knew it would be something I would enjoy. “I've only been on station a little while since finishing the training but I'm really enjoying it. I'm learning so much and work with some great people.” When Kev Hughes did retire, after another Senior Cup run which saw the club lose 2-1 in extra time to Morpeth Town, Ryan saw his responsibilities at the club increase, after being made the vice-captain. Supporting his long time friend and colleague Adam Forster, who was made captain in the summer of 2019, was always something Ryan was eager to
P20: Official North Shields Match Programme @NorthShieldsFC #HowayTheRobins
“My first year will be tough trying to fit it all in but I'll do the best I can to make as many games as possible.” “The recruitment process was very difficult with online tests, physical tests and an interview. “I am very fortunate that I got onto the course as thousands of people expressed their interest. “The 15 week training course was very intense. You were constantly tested with written exams, practical exams and fitness tests. “Coming from a football background really helped me with the fitness side of things and the team work aspect of the job.”
Just like every other member of the club, Ryan had to begin his pre-season without any fans allowed in. Games against Wallsend Boys Club, Dunston UTS, Seaton Delaval, Jarrow, and Blyth Town were all forced to take place behind closed doors, due to the Covid -19 pandemic which has swept the globe. “It's been very strange, something that none of us are use to,” he admitted when asked about whether the lack of fans made a difference. “The fans are a massive part of the club and they do make a difference on match day. “Obviously I hope things get back to normal as soon as possible. But until then, we need to concentrate on getting points on the board ready for their (full) return.” When that will be is still uncertain, but with recent news that
the DCMS (Department of Digital, Culture, Media & Sport) are still aiming to go forward with trials from October 1st,of having larger fan gatherings in elite sporting venues, there is some hope that by the turn of the year, the doors will be opened to even more people. But Ryan remains realistic that until there is a workable vaccine in place, public health is a far more important priority.
“I don't think anyone really knew what was going to happen in regards to the upcoming season,” said Carr. “I would of been gutted if it didn't go ahead but as much as I love football, everyone's health comes first.” While the world of non-league football was brought to a grinding halt over the summer, non-league clubs were not just faced with the challenge of
making a very limited budget stretch as far as possible, first team coaches from every corner of the UK were tasked with trying to maintain a strong unity amongst the squad. On top of that, with all forms of training initially made illegal, their was a fear that fitness levels would be depleted, something which no doubt would have concerned Ryan, given his new career path. However, as Ryan revealed, the Robins, as a unit, have been working just as hard to maintain some level of normality. “I think the club have done really well in the current situation,” boasted Carr. The squad kept themselves fit despite no training during lockdown. There has been friendlies called off and lots of changes but everyone has been patient and continued to work hard ready for the season.”
P21: Official North Shields Match Programme @NorthShieldsFC #HowayTheRobins
Why exactly do clubs need a lengthy pre-season schedule before the real stuff begins? It is all about getting the playing squad in the best physical shape possible. Without that, players are at a greater risk of injury, something which the Robins have been very unlucky with to begin the season. Following a heavily interrupted preseason campaign, creative midfielder Paul Van-Zandvliet was side-lined in the last pre-season game against Heaton Stannington with a broken foot, while last season’s top scorer, Kyle Patton, dislocated his knee against Marske United in the FA Cup. “Both Paul and Kyle performed very well last season and that continued into pre season,” began Carr. “It's a big miss for us and I know they are both itching to get fit and back playing. Fortunately for us we have a big squad with lots of quality where players will step in.
“ Hopefully they have a speedy recovery and are back playing as soon as possible.” One of those players who will add a lot of quality is Dan Wilson, who returned with a bang this season, netting a hattrick against his former side Seaham Red Star. Having played alongside Dan for a number of years, before his departure, Ryan was delighted to line up alongside him once again. “I played some of my best football alongside Dan,” he recalled. “He holds the ball up extremely well and brings players into the game. It gives us a different option going forward. Dan is a great signing for us as are the other signings the club have made.” The Robins will be on the road next as they travel south to face Guisborough Town on Wednesday evening. Tow Law Town
The Lawyers were founded in 1890 and became founder members of the Auckland and District League in 1892. The following year they won the Durham Amateur Cup. They first joined the Northern League in 1894, winning the Durham Challenge Cup two years later. After leaving the Northern League the Lawyers played in the South Durham Alliance (1900 to 1905) and Crook and District League (1912 to 1914). After the war the club played in the Auckland and District League until being readmitted to the Northern League in 1920 where it has played ever since. Until 1994/95 season the club had not won the championship apart from two successive seasons 1923/24 and 1924/25.

In between the League Cup was won in 1973/74 when Ashington were beaten 2-1 in the final at Crook. The 1994/95 League Championship win is a certainly an outstanding memory for the club especially as it was won by 14 clear points. The Lawyers finished second in the league in the 1998/99 season. Another outstanding memory was the tremendous F.A. Cup run of 1967/68. Having reached the first round Tow Law beat Mansfield 5-1 and in the second round drew 1-1 with Shrewsbury at Ironworks Road. The Lawyers went into the hat for the Third Round and drew a home tie with Arsenal. Sadly, it was not to be after they went down 6-2 at Shrewsbury in the replay. Frank McGee reported after the replay, Arsenal were saved from a fate worse than death - a trip to Tow Law in January. Peter Quigley and Tony Heslop took the Club on its first visit to Wembley was made on 9th May 1998 after a tremendous F.A. Vase run. It was a splendid adventure which sadly ended with a 1-0 defeat by Tiverton.

A major scare occurred early in the 2004/05 season, the playing surface was struck by subsidence, rendering it unplayable. The Club was forced to ground share at Esh Winning for the remainder of the season, whist repairs were carried out by the Coal Board. Continuity at the club was provided by the longest serving trio
of officials in the League, Chairman Harry Hodgson, Treasurer Harry Dixon and Club Secretary Bernard Fairbairn who followed his father and grandfather into the job.) They had over 100 years’ service between them. Harry Hodgson stood down as Chairman at the end of the 95/96 season but is still a member of the committee. At the end of 1997 Harry Dixon also stood down but stayed on as the Club President until his death in 2002. Harry Hodgson took over as President. Their places have been taken over by John Flynn as Chairman and Kevin McCormick as Treasurer. Bernard Faribairn stepped down as Secretary in 2007 after being in the post since 1961 – over 40 years. “A prisoner would get less for murder.” Steve Moralee Taking over for the 2007/08 season. During 2004, John Flynn stood down as Club Chairman. Harry Hodgson again showed his devotion to the Club, returning as Chairman for 1 last year. Following the 2004/05 season, Harry Hodgson took a well-deserved retirement from the Club. His replacement, Sandra Gordon becomes the first female Chair at the Club and only the third in the long history of the League. Billy Hall who played for Blackpool and Manchester City returned to Tow Law after his playing days and became the team’s trainer. He remained a staunch supporter until he died in January 2000, aged 98. He had been the Northern Leagues and the Football Leagues oldest surviving player. Billy was a member of the League Championship teams in the 1920s. In recent times the Lawyers most famous player was the England International Chris Waddle who transferred to Newcastle in 1980

P35: Official North Shields Match Programme @NorthShieldsFC #HowayTheRobins
Today’s businesses demand a robust and dependable energy solution provider, Northern Gas and Power has already built strong foundations and has a reputation for exceeding expectations. Since we launched we have worked with thousands of businesses in a range of sectors, our service has evolved to become the most dynamic energy procurement and management service on the market today. At NGP we offer Global buying power with a personal touch. In 2018 along we contracted almost 12,000 energy meters, equating to 5.1 billion kilowatt-hours! That’s equivalent to the entire energy consumption of Tanzania! Quite an achievement from a company that starts from our MD’s bedroom only 7 years ago, even if we do say so ourselves!
