CHAIRMAN’S CORNER Today we welcome newly promoted Billingham Town for this EBAC Northern League Division One fixture. We hope their officials, player and supporters enjoy their stay here in North Shields before the journey back home. Town are doing well in their first few games in this division and have raised a few eyebrows with their progress so far. It's well known they are a well ran club and have a very good team. Let's hope they don't enhance their reputation at our expense today. Having missed a couple of games recently, including last weeks win at Penrith, I'm beginning to feel it's me that's the Jonah. But the truth is we are still far inconsistent and continue to throw games away. The second half performances were quite frankly abysmal and not acceptable. Let's hope that last weeks game has turned a corner and we can resume our climb up the table and into a challenging position. There's still along way to go and anything can happen as Hebburn's result last week proved.

We have been drawn at home against West Allotment in the Northumberland senior cup. Let's not forget that it was this fixture up at their place that gave us the stepping stone into the final at St James Park. Having said that though, as we all saw on the night. it took a monumental effort to get past them.

The new format of the League Cup is proving interesting after much condemnation when the games were drawn. Let's just see what happens. I believe we are away next week to Town's neighbours Synthonia so that should be very interesting also. Back to today and here's hoping we can put our best foot forward and not give the game away in the second period. Up the Robins.

Alan Matthews

MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good Afternoon as we welcome newly promoted Billingham Town who are in tremendous form having won seven in a row followed by a league cup draw in midweek. Sitting just above us in the table, they will be full of confidence but it’s in our own hands to overtake them today. Since our last home match against Hebburn, we have been on our travels to Stockton then Penrith. I must admit there was major disappointment at Stockton after a brilliant first half saw us in great position to go on and inflict a first defeat on them, but we just didn’t capitalise. The only bright spot in the end was a record equalling goal from Gaz Bainbridge. However, we bounced back at Penrith and for all their struggles this season, they are difficult to beat on their own patch and scores have been close. Thankfully, after an initial struggle, we changed shape and put Scott McCarthy and Cam Cunningham in wider areas and it gave us more space and time to play. We scored at great times and were treated to a superb volley from Kyle Patton – a sign of his confidence to hit a first time effort like that. We have had some injuries of late with Chris McDonald, Wayne Buchanan and Paul Van joining Jordan Summerly on the sidelines but we are hopeful to see a few returning today. We then return to cup action midweek so there maybe a chance for some get some game time but I can assure everyone we are all out to try and qualify out of the group as early as possible and our good win against Seaham has given us the perfect start. Today though is about three points. We are close to the pack above us and we need get amongst it. Enjoy the game

The Robins secured their first away win of the season as goals from Cam Cunningham, Scott McCarthy and Kyle Patton saw the Robins to a comfortable 3-0 win over struggling Penrith. Cunningham’s goal on the stroke of half time gave the Robins a deserved lead at the break. Substitutes McCarthy and Patton heaped more misery on the Bonny Blues with welltaken strikes midway through the second period.

And with Penrith rarely threatening to score, the Robins comfortably held on for all three points. The Robins were dealt a blow early on when Gareth Bainbridge, who had recently equalled Don Winskill’s scoring record, was forced off with a knee injury; with McCarthy coming on in his place. This stunted the visitors early momentum as both sides struggled to break into the final third. In the 15th minute, Ryan Carr had the first real chance of note when his shot on goal, following a good move from Cunningham, was well saved by the keeper. Three minutes later, Penrith came close to threatening a goal when striker Martyn Coleman’s cross-goal shot only needed the slightest touch to go in. After a corner in the 27th minute, defender Rhys Williams, who was recalled to the team, almost caught Penrith keeper Dan Staples off guard with a close range shot; one which the keeper was able to deflect away. Shields kept applying the pressure and Adam Forster almost made the breakthrough in the 31st minute, only for his shot, following a flowing move, to be saved by Staples. With the game looking like it was going to be scoreless at the break, Shields finally managed to make the break through.

Following a brilliant McCarthy run through the Penrith defence, Cunningham collected the ball just inside the area before prodding it into the bottom corner of the net. The Bonny Blues began the second half brightly and in the 48th minute, Coleman was denied by a good save from Greg Purvis. Penrith were made to rue that miss as in the 51st minute, a low cross from Cunningham was fired home from close range by McCarthy; his first goal for North Shields. After both benches made a number of substitutions, it was the Robins who maintained their second half dominance. As the game entered the final 20 minutes, only a spectacular save from Staples denied Carr from putting the game to bed. McCarthy was keen to add to his total and two minutes later, he almost finished off another flowing Shields move, only for Staples to make another top save. The visitors were finally rewarded for their second half performance when, in the 80th minute, Patton thundered his shot from just inside the penalty area past Staples, after a fantastic pass from Cunningham. Three minutes later and it could have been four when Carr’s towering header was gratefully collected by the under pressure Penrith shot stopper. However, with Penrith providing no real threat on the Shields goal, the Robins celebrated an impressive away win.

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY

The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League. They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900– 01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900. After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance. They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic. The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958. North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933–34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3–0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0. A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951–52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956– 57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign. North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runners-up and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas). The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local shipyard worker. (North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was shortlived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium. Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United. The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. This campaign in which Wembley skipper Kevin Hughes made his 300th appearance the side enjoyed a promising mid-season run of results which saw them put pressure on the top three.

BILLINGHAM TOWN CLUB HISTORY BILLINGHAM TOWN was originally known as Billingham Social Club and was founded in 1967 by Tom Donnelly and Robbie Cushley. Tom, who played in Town’s first game back in 1968, has been secretary of Billingham Town since its conception until 2000 when he became Life president. In 1968 Town joined the Second Division of the Stockton & District League and won the league title at the first attempt, playing at Mill Lane and the legendary slope – the top of the corner flag was level with the crossbar. Town stayed in the Stockton League until 1973 and won the Division A League title three times and the League Cup twice and also winning the Stockton Charity Cup twice. In 1974 Town were admitted into the Teesside League and remained members for eight years. During this time they won the League twice (1978-79 and 1981-82) and were runners-up once. In 1975 they were beaten finalists in the Durham Amateur Cup Final, but won the competition in 1976 and 1982. In 1982 the club took the golden opportunity of joining the newly formed Second Division of the Dryboroughs Northern League and changed its name to Billingham Town. After three years in the Second Division Town gained promotion into the First Division but were immediately relegated back to the Second Division in 1986. However, they bounced straight back in 1987 and lost to neighbours Synthonia in the final of the Durham Challenge Cup a year later. Another relegation followed in 1991-92, but they regained their place in the top flight in 1997-98 and have remained there since. After being runners-up in the Durham Challenge Cup in 1988-89 and 2001-02 Town eventually won the cup in season 2003-04 when manager Alan Robinson led them to a 3-1 victory over then UniBond side Bishop Auckland. Since 1981, ground improvements at the Bedford Terrace ground have resulted in new dressing rooms, a cantilever stand, hard terracing behind one goal, hard terracing and covered accommodation opposite the main stand. A refreshment room and a re-turfed pitch surrounded by an 8ft boundary fence around 5.5. acres of land. Bedford Terrace is now recognised as having one of the more attractive grounds in the North-East. Floodlights were installed in the 1992-93 season with the official switch-on match against Middlesbrough F.C. After sever gales blew down one of the pylons, Town installed new floodlights in 2003. In the summer of 2007 Hartlepool United invested in Bedford Terrace and completely re-laid the football pitch to a depth of several feet and installed new drainage. The new pitch measurements and now exactly the same measurements of Pool’s Victoria Park. Also behind the scenes there has been a total facelift with new showers and central heating being put in the dressing rooms. Hartlepool now play the majority of their home Reserve games at Bedford Terrace. The 2015/6 season saw the arrival of Manager Barry Oliver and assistant Graham Popple whom have brought stability to the club and managed a respectable finish season. The 2016/17 season was one of the club most exciting in recent years with a FA VASE run saw Town knocked by Cleethorpe Town in the 4th Round proper. The Lincolnshire side went on to make the final only to be beaten by South Shields. Also that year Craig Hutchinson broke the record for goals scored with a total of 59. At the end of the 2017/18 campaign, stalwart of the club and long running Chairman & Secretary, Peter Martin announced his retirement from all club duties. Unfortunately the 2017-18 campaign saw the club rapidly decline off the field with volunteers leaving and attendances dropping dramatically. In January 2018 the Billingham Town Supporters Trust was set up which worked to oust the regime in charge, eventually taking over the running of the club facilities on 18th February after an EGM of club supporters and volunteers. Paul Beddow was voted in as the new Chairman of the Supporters Trust along with a strong committee behind him. The new committee immediately set about getting the club back on track which saw many ex-volunteers and supports return and rally around the club. At the end of the 2017-18 season, Manager James Hunter and his assistant Harry Taylor stood down from their positions, and the club moved swiftly to appoint familiar face Barry Oliver and ex-Thornaby manager Paul Edwards as a joint management team. With a strong team off the field and stability slowly returning to the club, hopes were high for the 2018-19 season. The team went unbeaten in the league till February 2019 and won the Second division title on the last day of the season with an 2-1 win at Heaton Stannington, before an massive away contingent narrowly beating neighbours Thornaby fc to the title .Craig Hutchinson won the League Golden boot award with 43 goals Recruitment for life in Division one has seen a number of players brought to the club by managers Barry Oliver and Paul Edwards who are continuing for an second season assisted by ex Blackburn rovers player and last season Billingham Synthonia coach Craig Haley
