THE PRESS BOX Hello and welcome to the Daren Persson Stadium for today’s Division One tie against Bishop Auckland. I hope that everyone associated with our visitors (fans, players, coaches and everyone in between) has a safe journey home after the game. It seems that our away trip to Penrith has given the side a big confidence boost. Since we returned from Cumbria with all three points, we managed to hold free scoring Billingham Town to a 0-0 draw and in our previous game against Billingham Synthonia, we came away with an impressive 6-0 win. Whilst it was great to see Ryan Carr score his hattrick as well as Paul Robinson’s and Cam Cunningham’s solo efforts, it was fantastic to see Chris Salmon scoring on his debut. For those of you who don’t know, Chris has been out of action for a long period of time after sustaining a serious injury whilst a member of Bishop Auckland. These past few weeks, he has been training hard to get back to full fitness and his goal and great performance was just a glimpse of what he can do on the pitch. Today’s visitors enjoyed themselves against us last season; beating us 2-1 on the opening day before thumping us 5-1 in the return fixture. I don’t know about you but our squad this season has shown so much improvement since then. I feel today’s game could prove to be a real close one. So far this season, I have been editing your match programme as well as filming and recording the match highlights after each game. This, as I am sure you can understand, is a lot for one person to do.

This is why we have brought my friend Ali Salat to the club. Formerly of Ryhope CW, Ali is a talented videographer who will be helping with both match reports and match highlights when he isn’t busy with Monkwearmouth Academy. Ali is a friendly lad and incredibly passionate about photography and videography so feel free to welcome him to the club as you all welcomed me at the beginning of last season. Finally, I want to thank the Robins support for their incredible backing these past few months. I don’t care what anyone says, we have the best support in the league. Enjoy the game

MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good Afternoon as we welcome Bishop Auckland for todays Northern League Division One fixture. There's a few connections now between the clubs and some familiar faces. I worked under our opponents' boss as his assistant manager at Whitley Bay and Woody also played for him way back when. More recently, we have signed Kyle Patton and Chris Salmon who were part of Bishops' successful campaign last season and more latterly Denver Morris who signed for them this summer before moving to us last month. We have bounced back ok in the league after the massive disappointment of Stockton away two weeks ago. We are on the back of two clean sheets following our win at Penrith then the goalless draw against a well organised and in form Billingham Town. We want to put a good run together and we need to be more consistent to do just that. Today's game will be a big challenge as a new look Bishops are young, energetic and vibrant so it should have the makings of an entertaining match. They are just above us in the league so we will be going all out to overtake them today. We have a few returning from injuries like Chris McDonald and Wayne Buchanan but Paul Van-Zandvliet is still struggling with his back and Gaz Bainbridge with his knee. Jordan Summerly is training again but as yet we cant put a date on his return. David Hall has returned from a loan spell with Newcastle University and he'll be pushing for a place. Enjoy the game,

Marc Nash

A Ryan Carr hattrick capped a fantastic team performance as the Robins ran out comfortable 60 winners over Billingham Synthonia. Two goals from Carr and a solo effort from Paul Robinson gave Shields a 3-0 lead at the break. Chris Salmon scored on his debut for the club with a fine solo effort midway through the second period. Carr and Cam Cunningham both scored late goals to round off the impressive victory. The Robins started brightly and after only four minutes, they had their opening goal, with Robinson collecting the ball from a corner before working his way into the box and firing his shot straight into the top left hand corner. Only four minutes later and the Robins had doubled their lead through Carr, after he controlled the ball before firing past the stranded Richard Heslin. In the 12th minute, a parried effort from Cunningham fell straight to the feet of Connor Campbell, putting the former Heaton Stannington striker through on goal. Luckily for the hosts, Heslin kicked the ball out from under Campbells feet before he could add a third goal. From the resulting corner, centre back Rhys Williams rose highest but his headed effort was well saved by the keeper. The Synners were at sixes and sevens and only moments later, a Heslin error tempted Robinson into an effort from distance, only to see the shot stopper recover just in time. Despite their start, the hosts steadied themselves and in the 19th minute, Thomas Bligh had an effort which flew well wide off the goal; his sides first effort at goal. They were made to rue this miss as Carr added his second goal of the game (the Robins third) in the 26th minute. A fantastic ball across the penalty area found the midfielder lurking on the edge of the six yard box before he converted with a first time effort. Whilst the rest of the half remained unmemorable, the hosts begun the second period with a bang as in the 47th minute, a rasping shot from Bligh cannoned off the crossbar before being cleared.

Despite being on the back foot at the start of the second period, the Robins soon added to their lead. In the 57th minute, a weaving run from debutant Salmon resulted in the attacker bursting through on goal before calmly slotting the ball past Heslin. With the game all but won, manager March Nash handed Marc Jacques his first team debut, replacing fellow debutant Salmon in the 63rd minute. As the game entered the 70th minute, the Robins found themselves adding a fifth goal to their tally, with Carr getting his hattrick in the process. After a smooth piece of play between Campbell and Robinson, all that Carr had to do was put the ball into the back of the net. With the Synners pressing hard in search of a consolation goal, the Robins needed to be as alert as ever and in the 77th minute, Robinson executed a perfect challenge, after tailing his man half the length of the pitch, to deny a break away. Not wanting to be left out of the action, Campbell tried to heap more misery on the hosts when he tried his luck on goal, only for Heslin to block his shot. Sixty seconds later, Chris McDonald attempted to sneak the ball in at the near post, after bamboozling his marker, but the keeper managed to smother the fullback’s effort. With time running out, Campbell once again tested the reflexes of the Synners keeper, only to find Heslin a match for another of his shots of goal. But with time almost up, Cunningham managed to squeeze a sixth goal onto the scoresheet to round off an impressive display. After a fine piece of skill, the youngster worked his way into the penalty area, past tired defenders, before gently curling the ball past the helpless Heslin. And only moments after the restart, the referee called time on a game where the Robins rarely looked like getting anything less than three points.

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY

The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League. They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900– 01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900. After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance. They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic. The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958. North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933–34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3–0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0. A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951–52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956– 57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign. North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runners-up and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas). The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local shipyard worker. (North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was shortlived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium. Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United. The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. This campaign in which Wembley skipper Kevin Hughes made his 300th appearance the side enjoyed a promising mid-season run of results which saw them put pressure on the top three.

BISHOP AUCKLAND CLUB HISTORY It all started in 1882 when theological students from Oxford and Cambridge Universities whilst studying at Auckland Castle, home of the Bishop of Durham, formed a team known as Bishop Auckland Church Institute. A later dispute caused a breakaway team called Auckland Town to be formed in 1886/87 and it was from this upheaval that Bishop Auckland Football Club was eventually born. Eight days after its formation, the club chose royal blue with white facings and subsequently the light and dark blue colours of the original Church Institute representing the colours of Oxbridge. Auckland Town was a founder member of the Northern League in 1889 but left after its first season before returning as Bishop Auckland in 1893. Between 1893 and 1988, the club won the league championship a record 19 times. The first championship was claimed in 1898/99 with the club going unbeaten in their league campaign, winning nine and drawing seven of their sixteen league matches. Success in national and local competitions often left the club with a backlog of league fixtures at the end of the season. In 1936/37 the team played 18 games in 18 days, without defeat, to finish runners-up. In 1937/38 the club ended up playing 14 games in 18 days, again finishing as runners-up, and in 1938/39 they played 10 games in 11 days to become champions. The most successful period in the Northern League came between 1947 and 1956 when the team never finished below second place. During this period they were champions seven times and runners-up on three occasions. Following the tragic Munich air disaster of 1958 when Manchester United lost so many talented players, three Bishop Auckland players went to assist the First Division champions. They were Derek Lewin, Warren Bradley, and Bobby Hardisty, who all played in United’s Central League side in March that year. Bradley, an England Amateur International, not only became a regular in United’s first team but also went on to play for his country at full international level. In the FA Amateur Cup, the Bishops record was without equal. No other club can match their number of wins, finals, and semi-final appearances. They were in the final 18 times, winning the cup on ten occasions including a record three times in a row in 1955, 1956 and 1957. The club were also semi-finalists on 27 occasions. When the competition ceased in 1974, the club was presented with a replica of the Amateur Cup in recognition of its outstanding record. In the FA Cup, the Club has played in the First Round Proper on a remarkable 23 occasions winning 10 times with memorable games against the likes of Sheffield United, Wolves, Carlisle United, Blackpool, Bury and Crewe. The best Cup run came in the 1954/55 season when, after beating Kettering Town 5-1 (home), Crystal Palace 4-2 (away), and Ipswich Town 3-0 (home) after a 2-2 draw in East Anglia, they were defeated 1-3 at home by York City in a thrilling Fourth Round tie. Two seasons earlier, a record attendance of 16,319 packed into Kingsway to see a Second Round defeat to Coventry City. In the FA Trophy the Club has reached the quarter-final stage three times in 1970, 1997 and 2000. Unquestionably the most famous player to wear the famous ‘Two Blues’ shirt was Bobby Hardisty. In a glittering 21 year playing career, starting with an FA Amateur Cup semi -final appearance at the age of 17, he gained every conceivable amateur honour. Bob was in the British team at three Olympic Games, won 15 Amateur International caps for England, and also played for Middlesbrough, Hibernian and Manchester United reserves. He also played in six FA Amateur Cup Finals at Wembley, gaining three winners medals, and won six Northern League Championship medals in seven years. In 1988, almost a century after first joining the Northern League, the Bishops decided to enter the pyramid system via the Northern Premier League. It was the end of an era, but it was also the beginning of an exciting new phase in the club’s history as the team immediately gained promotion to the Premier Division, where they more than held their own for over a decade. The highest ever league placing was as Runners -up in the 1996/97 season At the end of the 2001/02 season the Club, now a limited company, moved away from Kingsway, home for 116 years, so that part of the ground that was shared with the local Cricket Club could be sold to help fund a new ground that would meet the now more demanding criteria for football stadia. The Club entered ground sharing agreements with a number of local clubs over the following 8 years. In 2002 the Two Blues suffered relegation for the first time in their long and distinguished history. Despite not finishing in a relegation place, they were demoted by the Northern Premier League on a ground technicality. They battled back, and found themselves in the Premier Division in 2004 following the restructuring of the non-league pyramid. However, relegation inevitably followed and so after a gap of 18 years, the Bishops’ returned to the Northern League for the 2006/07 season. After a considerable amount of complex negotiations a site for the new stadium was found and Heritage Park, with a capacity of just over 2,000 was officially opened by Sir John Hall on Sunday October 24th 2010 and hosted its first game against a Middlesbrough team shortly after watched by 1,341 spectators. Heritage Park hit full capacity (2,004) in the opening league match of the 2012/13 season against our current ground sharing partners Darlington 1883 in their first competitive game in the Northern League since reforming. 2015 has seen possibly the biggest news for quite some time in the history of the Club when Colin Rowell, an avid supporter of the Club for more than 70 years, left the bulk of his estate, worth more than £300,000 to the Club on his death at the age of 79 years, as a fitting tribute to Colin, his ashes were scattered on the Heritage Park pitch. The 2016/17 campaign saw the club finish a solid 8th position in the Northern League. The club progressed to the 4th qualifying round of the FA Cup eventually getting knocked out by ex-football league club Stockport County, this was Bishop’s best performance in the cup in the last 20 years.
