CHAIRMAN’S CORNER This evening it's back to cup action as we welcome the officials, players and supporters from Heaton Stannington to the Daren Persson Stadium tonight. It's the re-vamped League Cup and should we win this evening we would be assured of moving into the knock out stages of the competition. Our only remaining fixture in our group is away next Monday against Newcastle University. That game will be played at Kimberley Park, Prudhoe. It's been a welcome change of fortunes for us with most of the players returning to full fitness and the team stringing together a decent run of results. Most impressive was last Saturday's defeat of Bishop Auckland, where we dominated the game from start to finish. It really was great to hear our supporters getting behind the team and cheering them on. Congratulations also to Chris Salmon who got his first goal for the club on his debut following a long spell on the sidelines following a nasty injury. Then against Bishop's it was Denver's turn to get on the score sheet, turning in a sublime cross at the far post in front of the ultras. I would also like to congratulate Kevin Hughes on the birth of his new daughter Rose. Kevin retired at the end of last season after a long playing career. No doubt he was looking forward to the rest. There will be no rest for him now. We may be half way in the first division at the moment, but we are also leading the fair play award table with the fewest booking so far this season. Long may it continue as any transgressions only cost the club unwanted fines.
Back to tonight and the game at hand. Just like Billingham Synthonia last week tonight's visitors play in the second division. However that must not be underestimated. We have been expecting them to get promoted for a few seasons now, and another local derby would be great with both clubs having a healthy support the atmosphere would be top notch. Enjoy the game. Up the Robins.
Alan Matthews
MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good evening and welcome to what could be our last midweek home game under the lights for a while. We have enjoyed some brilliant nights here so far this season with great wins and performances against Whickham, Shildon, Consett and also in this competition against Seaham. We look forward to welcoming our local neighbours Heaton Stannington tonight as the group stage comes close to a conclusion. We just need a point to qualify after a perfect record so far; two wins and no goals conceded. In fact we are now four clean sheets in a row which has saw us enter a little run. The last week we have beaten Synthonia away with a fine 6-0 performance, which saw two debuts for Chris Salmon and Marc Jacques, then an absolutely dominating performance on Saturday against Bishop Auckland. Asides to our own games, I’ve seen a lot of NL games this season but I haven’t seen anyone dominate a game as much as we did on Saturday. It was complete control and the only slight negative was the game should have been safe score-line wise much earlier. The impact from a very strong bench done the trick in terms of clinching the points. I dread to think what an already battered defence must think when we can bring on Denver, Scott and Robbo. It’s a sign that we are getting everybody back, with Davie Hall also returning last midweek. We are just waiting for Gaz Bainbridge and Jordan Summerly now, with the former possibly involved tonight which may see him break that record.
Enjoy the game!

North Shields extended their good run of form after three second half goals helped them to a deserved 3-0 victory over Bishop Auckland. The Robins were frustrated in the first half, as effort from Cam Cunningham, Connor Campbell and Kyle Patton were squandered. However, Wayne Buchanan opened his account for the club early in the second half with a fine header, putting the Robins ahead. With minutes remaining, strikes from Paul Robinson and Denver Morris saw the Robins to a commanding lead. And with the game put to bed, a fine Greg Purvis save ensured the Robins had their third clean sheet in a row. The hosts started the game brightly and in the fifth minute, Cunningham burst into the box but his shot was poked wide of the upright. The young winger came closer in the 13th minute when his powerful strike forced Bishops keeper Nick Liversedge into a smart save. Midway through the first half, the Robins should have taken the lead when Campbell’s close range shot was parried away by the keeper, with Patton’s follow up deflected to safety. Trying to go one better, the former Bishop Auckland winger fired a shot in on goal from distance, only to see the ball swerve in the air and zip the wrong side of the post. Bishops were struggling to get out of their own penalty area and only moments before the half time break , Adam Forster’s well taken volley looped onto the top of the net. It didn’t take long for the Robins to reassert themselves after the restart and in the 48th minute, Buchanan rose highest to meet a Chris McDonald cross; giving the Robins the lead.
Having missed opportunities in the first half, Cunningham was eager to get on the score sheet. Minutes after Buchanan’s opener, the youngster almost got what he wanted, but for a fingertip save from Liversedge. The Robins were piling on the pressure, with Ryan Carr the next Shields player to test his luck from range, only to see the ball deflect wide. On any other day, the hosts could have had five or six! Moments later, just before he was substituted, Patton turned his marker on the edge of the penalty area before firing a shot which zipped across the face of the goal. With the game entering the final five minute, the Robins finally added a second goal to their tally. Robinson, who had come on moments earlier, fed fellow substitute Morris as he broke into the penalty area. Despite initially losing possession, the former West Auckland winger won the ball back before returning it to Robinson. Noticing that Liversedge was off his line, the experienced midfielder unleashed a deft chip over the keeper’s head and into the top corner of the net. Less than a minute later, the hosts had a third goal to boast about when Carr played substitute Scott McCarthy into space on the flank, before the former Newcastle Benfield attacker picked Morris out at the far post, leaving him with the simplest of finishes. Despite the game being beyond their reach, Bishops were looking for a consolation and with seconds remaining, substitute Darren Richardson was played through on goal after a neat one-two play. However, his effort was brilliantly saved by Purvis, who had very little to do all game.

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY
The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League. They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900– 01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900. After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance. They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic. The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958. North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933–34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3–0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0. A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951–52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956– 57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign. North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runners-up and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas). The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local shipyard worker. (North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was shortlived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium. Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United. The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. This campaign in which Wembley skipper Kevin Hughes made his 300th appearance the side enjoyed a promising mid-season run of results which saw them put pressure on the top three.

HEATON STANNINGTON CLUB HISTORY Although officially founded in 1910, Heaton Stannington were in existence by 1903 and playing at Miller’s Lane on the site of the current Fossway. The club name originates from its links with the Stannington Avenue area of Heaton. In 1903-04 they finished fifth in division 2 of the Newcastle and District Amateur League. In December 1904, they resigned from the league with the reserves also appearing to have resigned from the Northern Amateur League (NAL) and there is no further record of the team until 1910. This suggests that they might have folded and then reformed nearly six years later. The summer of 1910 saw Heaton Stannington field a cricket team. The next football match played by the Stan appears to have been on 24th September 1910 when they were beaten 4-1 by Sandyford. From at least 1913, home games were taking place at Paddy Freeman’s Park. The club played friendly matches until joining the Tyneside Minor League in1913 and NAL Division Two in 1914. The club were elected to membership of the Northumberland FA (NFA) on 10 September 1914, just over a month after the start of the First World War. The Stan stopped playing until 1919 as at a NFA emergency meeting on 24 November 1914 it was announced that the club were unable to take part in a Minor cup replay ‘on account of not being able to raise a team as so many of their members had joined the army.’ The club spent the next 19 years in NAL Division One and gained their first trophies in 1934 and 1936 when they won the Tynemouth Infirmary Minor Cup and NAL Challenge Cup respectively. The first glory season came in 1936-37 when the club won NAL Division One, were Northumberland Amateur Cup winners and NAL Challenge Cup runners up. The reserves were also NAL Division Two runners up. For one season, 1938-39, the Stan participated in the Tyneside League and were runners up. By the 1930s the team were playing at the Coast Road ground. In October 1935, they started playing at Newton Park in High Heaton on the site of a recently filled-in quarry. In 2007, the ground was renamed Grounsell Park in honour of the service given, both on and off the pitch, by Bob Grounsell. One of the most memorable matches played there took place in July 2012 when Heaton Stannington were beaten 4-0 by the Gabon national side. This warm-up match for the Olympics included an appearance by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The club were elected to the Northern League in 1939. They only managed one season in the league before it was suspended for the duration of the Second World War. The league restarted in 1945 but Heaton Stannington were elected, until 1946, as a non-playing member as their ground was being used by the military. After 5 consecutive bottom three finishes, the club resigned at the end of the 1951-52 season and joined the Northern Alliance until 1956. The next 16 seasons included involvement in the NAL (1956-59), North Eastern League (1959-60) and the Northern Combination (1960-72). In 1972 the club stepped up to the Wearside League and remained there for ten years. They were forced to resign from the league in 1982 for financial reasons due to the club trustees, who had formed a limited company in 1968, putting the annual rent up from £400 to £1500. The company then tried to build a supermarket on the ground but the planning application was defeated. In 1983 the High Court ruled that the ground belonged to the football club and the company had to relinquish ownership. The team played in the Tyneside Amateur League (TAL) during 1982-83 as Heaton United. Back as Heaton Stannington, they won the TAL in 1983-84 which was only their second league title up to this point. The next 2 seasons were spent back in the NAL where they were champions in 1985-86 as well as wining the Northumberland Minor Cup and the C&E Injections Service Shield. For the next 27 years the club were in the Northern Alliance, which became a 3-tier league in 1988 and saw the Stan placed in the Premier Division. After two relegations to Division One, the Stan achieved stability by spending 9 seasons in the Premier Division. The club won their highest level league trophy when they became Champions in 2012. In 2012-13, they achieved the treble by not only retaining the title but by also winning the Northern Alliance League Cup and the Northumberland Senior Benevolent Bowl. From 1911 to the financial crisis of 1982, the club had a competitive reserve team. It played much of the inter war years in the North Eastern Amateur League before rejoining the NAL on and off for nearly fifty years but with a five-year spell in the 1960s, including two runners up spots, in the TAL. The club had an ‘A’ and ‘B’ team for 2016-17 before these teams reverted back to their previous name of Newcastle Chemfica. The Stan continue to have a successful over 40’s side. For season 2013-14, after a gap of 61 years, the Stan returned to the Northern League. They were in the promotion race throughout the season and finished fifth. In their second season back, they finished ninth and qualified for the FA Cup for the first time in 39 years. Season 2015-16 saw the Stan again finish ninth and they also reached the semi-final of the Northumberland Senior Cup against Blyth Spartans. In the league there was a memorable 3-2 home win over champions South Shields. In 201617, the Stan surprised many by just missing out on promotion in the 2nd last game of the season, coming fourth after winning 11 games in a row starting in January. Last season they were again in the promotion race until the second last match, ending fifth. Since the club gained promotion to the Northern League, improvements have been made to Grounsell Park including floodlights and a stand. These complement the existing facilities which include a bar serving real ale with the club being voted CAMRA Tyneside club of 2018. Much of the recent success is a result of the commitment and work of manager Derek Thompson along with the support of an increasingly large band of volunteers.
