The Editor Hello and welcome to the Daren Persson Stadium for today’s Northern League Division One tie against Hebburn Town. I hope that our guests have an enjoyable stay (within reason) and have a safe trip home after the game. When I used to work as a chef down south, I was always told by my superiors that if you have a bad day, you got to dust yourself down, put it behind you and come back the next day with a new energy. I think it is safe to say that after our disappointing defeat to Ashington last Saturday, the boys bounced back in some style by beating Seaham Red Star 3-0 in the Northern League Cup on Wednesday night.

As good as the three points were, it was the fact that we played Seaham off the park at times and if they score had gone up to five or even six, it wouldn’t have flattered us one bit. The only point that needs making, one which Marc made himself in his interview with me Wednesday night, is that we can’t keep finding ourselves in a position where we need to bounce back. Wednesday night is a very good benchmark from which to grow, all we have got to do now is grow as a unit. Today we face arguably one of the favourite to win the Division Title this season in Hebburn Town. The club has gone from strength to strength since being promoted to Division One and will no doubt prove to be a massive challenge for Marc and his team. Having said that, I know for a fact that it is a challenge they are relishing.

They have got some serious talent throughout that squad and if they are anywhere lower than second at the end of the season, I will be very surprised indeed. If the game against Hebburn Town wasn’t enough, the following Wednesday, we travel to the other Division Title favourite in Stockton Town. If Hebburn have had a good start to the season then Stockton have had a splendid one; scoring 19 and conceding only one in the league.

We have had some success against other well backed sides so far this season, beating Whickham and Shildon AFC, but we take nothing for granted and will approach this game with that burning desire to win. Howay The Robins

Three goals helped the Robins brush Seaham Red Star to one side in the opening game of their Northern League Cup group.

Less than a minute later, Cassidy almost had his second of the game after Campbell was tripped just outside the area.

An early Ryan Carr header got the hosts off to a perfect start

His well struck freekick forced Steavens into an acrobatic save to keep Seaham within touching distance.

Nick Cassidy then opened his account for the club early in the second half with a well-taken left footed effort, to double the lead. And with the visitors down to ten men, due to injury, Gareth Bainbridge added a spectacular third goal to secure the three points. After a scrappy opening to the game, the Robins support was not made to wait long for their first goal of the day. In the 12th minute, following a deft Connor Campbell cross, Carr rose highest in front of goal to direct his header into the back of the net; with the keeper rooted to the spot. Carr was at it once again in the 14th minute when he got his head onto another cross, this time from Cam Cunningham, only for the ball to fly over the crossbar. The Robins continued their early dominance and in the 21st minute, a delightful ball from Cassidy found Cunningham in the box, only for the young winger to get his head underneath the ball, causing it to sail well over.

Every time the Robins went forwards, they looked like they were going to score. In the 61st minute, a perfectly weighted pass from Bainbridge almost found Cunningham in the box, however, Steavens reacted quickly and smothered the ball before Cunningham could convert. As the game approached the 70th minute, the Robins were still ploughing forwards in search of a third goal. Fullback Chris McDonald caught the Seaham midfield napping and went on a surging run. After trading passes with Cunningham, McDonald tried his luck at the near post but Steavens once again was on hand to protect his goal. The Robins weren’t to be denied much longer and in the 72nd minute, a long range thunderbolt from Bainbridge, following a smart pass from McDonald, proved to be too much to handle for the young Seaham keeper.

It took until the 28th minute for Seaham to register their first attempt at goal after Liam Gillesphey tried his luck from range. Fortunately for the Robins, he didn’t connect well with his effort and the ball dribbled wide.

On top of being three goals down, Seaham’s fortunes took a turn for the worse when Michael Chilton was forced off with an injury, leaving the visitors with ten men; with manager Mark Collingwood having used all three substitutes already.

Carr and Cunningham were running circles around the Seaham defence and if not for an excellent blocking tackle, Cunningham’s low cross would have found Carr at the near post .

Despite being three goals up, the Robins were still hunting for more, with substitute Kyle Patton and Cunningham both being denied by Steavens in the 79th minute.

Moments later, a fantastic flick from Campbell released Carr through on goal, only for his resulting shot to be well saved by Seaham keeper Aaron Steavens.

Patton tried his luck again minutes later but once again, Steavans was on hand to make the smart save at his near post.

Shields started the second half brightly and in the 47th minute, following an excellent run from Cunningham, the ball found Cassidy outside the area. His sweetly struck left footed shot left Steavens with no chance.

With the clock running down, the Robins fashioned one last chance to add a deserved fourth goal to their tally. Substitute Denver Morris weaved his way down the right before his looping cross was fired over from close range by Bainbridge.

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY

The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League. They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900– 01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900. After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance. They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic. The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958. North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933–34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3–0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0. A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951–52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956– 57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign. North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runners-up and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas). The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local shipyard worker. (North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was shortlived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium. Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United. The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. This campaign in which Wembley skipper Kevin Hughes made his 300th appearance the side enjoyed a promising mid-season run of results which saw them put pressure on the top three.

HEBBURN TOWN CLUB HISTORY Hebburn was very different back in 1912. The collieries that had changed it from a small agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty grimy industrial town were nearing peak employment of 1,864 men, the shipyards launched by Andrew Leslie were in full vigour and the town, 11 years earlier, had welcome a diminutive Frenchman called Alphonse Reyrolle. Reyrolle opened an engineering works, initially employing just 50 men, in the former dye factory next to St Aloysius’s church. At its peak Reyrolles would employ 12,000 men from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and cultures and export to 70 countries and be known worldwide. The company also started a football team, encouraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph Carr-Ellison, another famous name in Hebburn history who provided the sports ground on which the Northern League side still plays. Football has played a major part in the life of the town, a cornerstone of its history. Probably it also helped the population forget the harshness of day-to-day life, families of ten and more in insanitary, twoup two-down houses. When the last pit closed in 1931, it had claimed the lives of almost 200 men and boys. There’d been plenty of teams before 1912, of course, notably Hebburn Argyle – kicked off in 1882 by Father Toner, the priest at St Aloysius’s. The town had so many Scots, they became known as the Tyneside Highlanders. Pre-World War 1 derbies with Jarrow would attract crowds of 8,000.The Geordie town also had Shinty and Curling Clubs and even an annual Highland Games, organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society. Alphonse Reyrolle had actively encouraged his workers to take part in sport, including “barefoot” football, and formed the Employees’ Benevolent Association. The team formed in 1912, elected to the second division of the Jarrow and District Junior League, was suitably booted, however. They progressed, flourished in the 1930s, had a wartime season in the North Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1943, and returned to the Northern Combination where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60, Reyrolles had another season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League but finished bottom with just eight points. The club then had 28 seasons in the Wearside League, and won the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup in 1968. In 1988, following the demise of the iconic engineering company A. Reyrolle, the name was changed to Hebburn and application made to join the Northern League – though it was before the days of automatic promotion and relegation and there wasn’t a vacancy. The ground was improved and other clubs canvassed. The break, however, came when North Shields created a vacancy by deciding to play elsewhere. The team played its first Northern League game on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton Comrades, won promotion and the Durham Challenge Cup in 1992 but were relegated – contentiously – for failing to meet ground criteria. They won the Craven Cup in 19992000. In season 2011/12, Hebburn reached the FA Cup final qualifying round – a dream tie at neighbours Gateshead, from whom they were separated by 125 league places – and secured promotion in third place after a fascinating and exciting final ten games which took the team up to the first division. In 2012/13 Hebburn Town met their target of staying in the first division after a nerve racking end to the season. During the close season however manager Paul Bennett decided to leave the club for Jarrow Roofing along with his assistant Dean Nicholson, Unfortunately the team followed suit and in June the club had to start from scratch; two ex-Hebburn players Scott Oliver and Davy Bell took up the challenge and the new management team successfully assembled a squad of mainly young players with a base of experienced players to give the team a good mix. Unfortunately, the very young and somewhat inexperienced side could not avoid relegation although they played with spirit, commitment and enthusiasm throughout the season. The team received many plaudits for their playing style and attitude and also achieved some notable results; although relegated the team got stronger as the season progressed. The squad in 2017/2018 season had a magnificent run from Jan 2018 – May 2018 that seen the hornets record just 2 losses in all competitions, this fine form secured promotion to the Ebac Northern League Division One by finishing in second place. Scott Oliver remains the club 1st team manager with his staff Assistant Chris Thompson, GK coach Andy Mallinson and club sports therapist Kim Furlong remaining with him. Both Scott and Chris are very experienced campaigners in the Northern League both as players and management. Hebburn Town has now enjoyed 30 seasons and over 1,000 games in the Northern League. Hopefully, they will continue to build on their great legacy for another 1,000 games.
