CHAIRMAN’S CORNER Today we return to league action and welcome the officials, players and supporters of Newcastle Benfield F.C. We hope they enjoy their short stay here in North Shields before the short trip back along the coast road.
Well the early stages of the League Cup have been completed as far as we are concerned and we go through to the next stage as table toppers in our group. We have played well in the competition so far but tried to throw it all away in the second half at Prudhoe against The University, with an abject display after a dominant first half in which we should have doubled our three goal advantage. The best news of the night however was when Jordan Summerly came on in the second for his first game this season following a long lay off due to an injury he got in pre - season. Prior to that, we won away comfortably last Saturday at Whickham against the leagues big spenders, if all the reports are true. That win also means we have won both home and away games against them this season. A great return against a very good side. It's also pleasing to see our attendance averages are up above the three hundred mark. The players are well aware of the importance of these figures, let's hope the performances stay at the current level. There is much conjecture at the moment about clubs declarations of attendances and the fact that some include season ticket holders and then count them in again when they turn up at the ground and pass the turn stiles, or so the rumours go.
Just to confirm, the only numbers we quote here at Shields are the total number actually in the ground, and do not include non attending season ticket holders. Back to today and another very tough game. Let's hope the players keep up this good run and get the three points today. Up the Robins.
Alan Matthews
MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good afternoon and welcome to everyone from Newcastle Benfield for this Northern League match. I’m sure everyone at Shields will join me in offering our condolences following the death of their chairman Jimmy Rowe. He was always welcoming to me whenever I visited Benfield either as opposing manager or even just up there watching a game. Jimmy has certainly left a legacy with how he grew his club into an established NL club. Both teams are in decent form so it promises to be a good, competitive game. We have strung a few good results together and have progressed in the league cup. The heavy schedule has started to take it’s toll with injuries but thankfully we are now working Saturday to Saturday for the near future so hopefully the injured players don’t miss out too much. We are now well placed in the league but we have to kick on and make a challenge for the top five. Everyone is pulling together and working hard and we’ve been excellent since the double whammy of defeats against the top two Hebburn and Stockton. We welcomed Jordan Summerly back on Monday night and it looks like he’s had no reaction so its full steam ahead for him and a welcome boost for the squad. However, with Wayne Buchanan, Gaz Bainbridge and Adam Forster struggling, we will need to juggle things a little. Another positive is the other three forwards are back scoring again with Kyle, Connor and Scotty, who faces his old club today. All are keen to keep their form going. Enjoy the game,
Marc Nash

North Shields survived a second half comeback to beat Division Two Newcastle University 4-3; securing top spot in Group A of the Northern League Cup. An early Connor Campbell strike was cancelled out by Noah Neill, before strikes from Kyle Patton and Cam Cunningham gave the Robins a 3-1 half time lead. The Uni pulled one back late in the game through Niza Chilufya to make it 3-2, but a second Cunningham strike with five minutes to spare restored the two-goal advantage.
In the 43rd minute, the Robins really should have doubled their lead when Cunningham picked out Robinson on the corner of the six yard box, but the midfielder flashed his shot across the face of goal. However, with only moments before the break, Shields’ lead was doubled when a smart turn from Patton, in the penalty area, picked out Cunningham in the centre of the box, with the youngster rising above his marker to power his header into the back of the net.
And despite a goal right at the death for the hosts, the Robins were able to hold on for the win which secures first place in the group.
At the start of the second half, the Robins took the game out of sight when a swirling freekick found Cunningham at the back post, with the youngster’s first time shot cannoning off the keeper before being cleared.
The Robins looked to gain an advantage early on and almost had the perfect start when Campbell was picked out inside the penalty area with a pin-point cross. Unfortunately, his mistimed header flew well wide of the upright.
Then moments later, Campbell should have done better with a chance, after being played through on goal, when he sliced his close range shot straight into the side netting.
Thankfully, in the tenth minute, the young striker went one better when a well-placed cross from Nick Cassidy met the head of the former Heaton Stannington forward, with the ball deflecting past the Uni keeper to give the Robins the lead. Having dominated the early proceedings, the Robins soon found themselves pegged back when Noah Neill capitalised on a poor clearance, in the 14th minute, to hammer his effort into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the six yard box. Looking to regain their lead, the visitors pressed forwards and in the 18th minute, a low drive from Patton on the angle was well collected by Uni keeper Harrison Avery. Shields’ dominance was soon repaid as in the 21st minute, they regained the lead. A great piece of vision from Paul Robinson picked out Patton in acres of space, with the young winger firing his shot in off the bottom of the post. In the 30th minute, a powerful drive from Cunningham forced Avery to parry the ball straight into the path of Campbell, only for the striker to fire his shot against the post with the goalmouth gaping.
Shields were starting to have their way with the Uni defence and in the 51st minute, Patton’s fierce drive narrowly missed the bottom corner of the net. Despite being under pressure for large spells of the game, the Uni were able to claw a goal back in the 78th minute. Substitute Niza Chilufya hammered home from close range after the Robin’s defence failed to deal with a dangerous cross. With nothing to play for but pride, the Uni were in search of their first point of their League Cup campaign. However, in the 86th minute, Cunningham restored the Robin’s two-goal lead when a low shot from the edge of the area beat the outstretched hand of Avery before nestling into the bottom corner. With seconds remaining, the Uni were able to add a third to their tally when Will Christopher bundled the ball home from close range. Despite the linesman raising his flag, the referee overruled him and allowed the goal to stand.

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY
The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League. They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900– 01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900. After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance. They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic. The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958. North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933–34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3–0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0. A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951–52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956– 57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign. North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runners-up and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas). The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local shipyard worker. (North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was shortlived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium. Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United. The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. This campaign in which Wembley skipper Kevin Hughes made his 300th appearance the side enjoyed a promising mid-season run of results which saw them put pressure on the top three.

NEWCASTLE BENFIELD CLUB HISTORY The origins of the club can be traced back to 1988 when, as a result of the Northern Alliance expanding to three divisions, the club were granted admittance and competed as Brunswick Village in the Second Division for just one season. Changing the club’s name to Heaton Corner House thereafter brought about a change in fortunes as the club transformed themselves from the previous season’s 10th place finish by storming to the Second Division championship in 1989/90. The club then moved to its current ground at Sam Smith’s Sports Ground off Benfield Road, and again changed its name; this time to Benfield Park. Following a couple of near misses in the race to gain promotion to the Premier Division, the club succeeded at the third time of asking before stunning the Premier Division big boys by claiming a League and Challenge Cup double at the first attempt at the end of the 1994/95 campaign. That success wasn’t built upon and the club suffered a few seasons in the doldrums, before an approach by local rivals North Shields St. Columba’s gave the club additional momentum at the turn of the millennium. Having managed to persuade Allan Bell to take the manager’s job just weeks after he had led Walker Central to the Northern Alliance title, Benfield’s second Northern Alliance title was achieved in 2002/03 and this fine achievement was heightened by the club’s acceptance into the Northern League. Allan Bell left the club before the start of the Northern League adventure, but his replacement Keith Sheardown started brilliantly, leading the club to immediate promotion into the First Division after a final day 9-0 demolition of Willington, but Nissan’s victory over main rivals Ashington was erased from the record books as they had fielded an ineligible player. Ashington won the replayed fixture and took the title, leaving Benfield to settle for second place. Expectations were for a season of consolidation in the club’s first campaign in the Northern League Division One, but no-one seemed to have told the players as they led the table for the first six months of the season before falling away and finishing a magnificent fourth. Benfield have since then enjoyed a successful and unbroken tenure in the First Division. Former Hartlepool United striker Paul Baker replaced Sheardown in September 2005 and was still at the helm when the club lifted their first Northern League honour, the League Cup, in May 2007, having beaten Nissan 1-0 at Federation Park, Dunston, courtesy of a magnificent Alu Bangura goal. Baker enjoyed particular success in FA competitions, leading the club to their then best performance in the FA Vase in 2006 and a year later reaching the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, narrowly losing 1-0 to York City in front of 927 fans, a ground record. Undoubtedly, the club’s finest season came in 2008/09 when, under Tom Wade, the club enjoyed an incredible run of form in the second half of the season to shoot up the league from a mid-table position to win the title on the final day of the season, thanks to an 88th minute winner by Stephen Young in the final game to be played at Penrith’s Southend Road ground. Newcastle Benfield had never been top of the table at any point during the whole season, until Young’s winning strike. That success was doubled when victory in the League Cup, ironically also against Penrith, was assured by a breath-taking Ian Graham goal, though all those who were present would agree that keeper Andrew Grainger’s performance was perhaps the finest individual display by a Benfield player during the club’s time in the Northern League. Wade left before the start of the following season, with Baker returning and winning the Cleator Cup, the Northern League’s equivalent of the Charity Shield, in his first game back in charge. The club were unable to repeat their Championship winning form and had to settle for fifth place, which was followed by fourth place in 2010/11. The highlight of that latter season was a third League Cup victory for the club, over Spennymoor United at Dunston, where that man Andrew Grainger was once more the star of the show, saving a penalty and making several world-class saves as 10-man Benfield prevailed 3-1 after extra time. Paul Baker resigned for the second time in September 2011, to be replaced by former player, captain and assistant manager Alu Bangura. Sadly, the club legend’s time in the hot seat was a short one and he left six months later, to be replaced by Perry Briggs as the club limped to a disappointing finish in the league. Briggs himself departed the club in the late autumn of 2012, to be replaced by former North Shields manager Anthony Woodhouse. Despite an encouraging 3-0 victory away to Sunderland RCA in Woodhouse’s first game in charge, results did not improve noticeably and he quit the job, citing work pressures, in early 2013. For the second season running, Benfield had the distinction of three managers in a season, this time seeing former Bedlington Terriers player Steve Bowey assuming the top job but combining it with a playing role. The end of the 2012/13 season saw Benfield avoid relegation by a narrow margin, having won away in the last league game played at Consett’s venerable Belle Vue ground. This was even more impressive as the fixture was played twice, as the lights failed with less than 15 minutes remaining in the first game, when a Benfield victory would have assured safety. The club made their fourth appearance in the League Cup final, ironically in the last ever game to be played at Belle Vue, but came up short against Spennymoor United, despite a battling performance. For 2013/14, Bowey’s side put in some impressive league performances, including a superb 7-0 victory away to Bedlington Terriers, but ultimately ended up finishing in 14th place. The real focus for the season was the FA Vase, where a series of excellent results, including victory away to eventual Northern League Champions Spennymoor United at their Brewery Field ground, put the club into the quarter finals of this national competition for the first time. Sadly this is where the story ended with a 1-0 defeat to Leicestershire side St. Andrew’s ending the dream of a Wembley appearance. Tragically, club founder Danny Gates passed away in November 2013. No-one who has ever attended a Benfield game will ever underestimate the contribution of Danny to the history and development of the club. He will never be forgotten. At the end of the season manager Steve Bowey tendered his resignation and was replaced by Neil Saxton, who in turn left in October to be replaced by the returning Bowey, with the club languishing near the foot of the table. Despite disappointingly early exits in all cup competitions, including a demoralising 2-1 loss away to Chadderton in the FA Vase, Bowey’s return galvanised the club’s league form. The last 14 games saw Benfield win 11 and draw 1 to top the form table, finishing 10th in the real version. This was helped by Northern League Player of the Season Paul Brayson weighing in with 49 goals in all competitions. With a settled squad, including some quality additions, the signs were hopeful for 2015/2016 at Sam Smith’s Park. However, after a difficult run of results, Bowey tendered his resignation at the end of October. The club acted to appoint Mark Convery and Paul Brayson as joint player managers in November 2015. After safety was assured, with a paperthin squad, the club opted for stability by retaining them as managers for the 2016/2017 season, which saw some encouraging performances in the league, with a 10th place finish in Division 1 securing the club’s status as Newcastle’s leading non-league side. Season 2017/2018 again saw noticeable improvement. Despite some poor home results, 7th place in the Northern League was assured, with Stockton Town denying The Lions 6th spot on goals scored; 91 to 90 in point of fact. Unsurprisingly, Paul Brayson was responsible for many of those; he contributed a total of 49 and scored over 40 goals for the sixth successive season. As well as improved league form, Benfield showed good form in the cups. Locally, a run to the Northern League Cup semi-final was ended with a disappointing penalty shootout loss at Bishop Auckland. In the Northumberland Senior Cup, Newcastle United Under 23s proved too strong at the semi-final stage. Nationally, a good run in the FA Cup that saw West Allotment Celtic, Goole, Whitley Bay and Ashton United defeated, was ended by a narrow 1-0 loss to former Football League outfit Kidderminster Harriers, only 2 games from the first round proper. The real heartbreak of the season was a defeat on penalties away to Coleshill Town in a last 16 replay, having already seen off Hebburn Town, Pickering Town, Bedlington Terriers and North Shields to reach that stage. However, the signs are positive following such a good season and the whole club was determined to kick on during 2018/2019. Sadly, following a slow start, manager Mark Convery and his assistant Craig “Bruiser” Heward left the club at the start of October, with Tom Wade returning as manager after an absence of 9 years. However, his second spell in charge lasted just over 4 months, before he left the club, enabling former Newcastle United and Benfield player Stuart Elliott to take over the role. Stu guided The Lions to the Northern League Brookes Mileson Cup final where, after dominating West Auckland Town for the whole game, a winner proved elusive and The Lions had to endure the heartbreak of a 4-3 loss on penalties. However, Stuart Elliott immediately pledged his future to the club, and we look to 2019/2020 with renewed optimism.

CHRIS SALMON Get to know the latest Robins recruit as he looks to build upon a solid start It is safe to say that new Robins signing Chris Salmon has had to fight hard to get his career back on track after a horror injury whilst a member of Bishop Auckland. The versatile wide man has not only recovered from what was a season ending injury, he now aims to begin a new journey here at North Shields. Head of Media, Sean Mulligan, catches up with Chris to see how he has found his time at the Robins. Firstly welcome to North Shields Chris, how do you feel to be back after being out of action for over 7 months? “Its great to be here, It’s amazing to be back on the pitch after a long period out of the game.” It’s been seven months since you last featured for ex club Bishop Auckland, how have you found your time on the sidelines whilst being on the road to recovery? “It’s been a long stressful journey but I knew that If I kept myself In good condition and I’d be back playing soon enough.” You have joined North Shields who are a community club on the up, you’ve been here for a few months, what are your thoughts on the club?
“North Shields are a big club with a fantastic history. I am really pleased to have singed for the club. The manager, staff, players and the fans have been brilliant.” After such a long time being out and trying to get yourself back on the field, what are your aims for the remainder of this season? “My personal aim is to be playing regularly within the team and to hopefully get my football back to the level I know I can play at.”
On your debut you got a goal against your old club in the Northern League Cup against Synners how did that feel? “The goal meant so much to me as I’ve been out of football for 7 months. There were a lot of days I was on my own working hard in the gym just to get back playing. So yeah it meant a lot. “ You have been reunited with Marc Nash and Anthony Woodhouse how crucial were they in the decision to join NE29?
“I’ve always had a lot of respect for Marc and Woody as they introduced me to NL1 and I’ve been able to push on under their management. “ There has been a lot of speculation that you are faster than Denver Morris is this true? “No comment” I’m sure you’ll all support a Salmon v Morris race, right? Do you have any pre match superstitions?
“I don’t have anything I do before a game I just try to relax myself as much as possible ready for the game ahead.” With the Robins’ schedule getting busier as the season goes along, Chris will no doubt be eager to make his mark. If his debut against Billingham Synthonia is anything to go by, Chris will have a big say on the Robins’ success this season.
