CHAIRMAN’S CORNER Today we welcome the officials, players and supporters of Newton Aycliffe F.C. to The Daren Persson Stadium for this crucial encounter. We hope they enjoy their short stay here before the journey back home.
This now begins a marathon run of home games through December and into January for us. Not the best of situations when trying to balance the accounts. This also means the in January we currently only have two fixtures in total. As it's Christmas I would like to thank a couple of people for their input into our operations. Firstly Paul Jackson who, as usual has our pitch in great order despite the horrendous weather we have been experiencing. Secondly there's John Sayers who joined our army of supporters during the Vase run and has now amassed well over 300 matches as a spectator. I've often said once here it get's in your blood. Of course John is usually accompanied by his son Chris. Thanks also to the many other supporters who follow the team week in and week out. Without your support we would simply fail to function as a unit.
DON'T FORGET THE CLUBHOUSE IS AVAILABLE FOR PARTIES AND FUNCTIONS. JUST ASK ANY
COMMITTEE MEMBER FOR DETAILS.
Back to today and our visitors Newton Aycliffe who have themselves been on a great run and are currently one position higher than ourselves in the league table. This game could be referred to as a six pointer and although there is still a long way to go three points today would be invaluable for us. Whatever happens enjoy the game and as usual. Up the Robins.
Alan Matthews
MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good afternoon as we welcome Newton Aycliffe for todays Northern League Division One match. It's been a frustrating time having only one game in the past month, with a blank week and a few postponements. It can really affect momentum especially when your on a good run. The other side is that it's almost three months since we tasted defeat at Stockton. Since then we have played ten games, winning eight and drawing two. Impressively, we have only scored less than three goals in two of those games against Billingham Town (0-0) and Heaton Stannington (2-2). Goals are being spread around which is always a good thing and we’ve also developed a canny knack of scoring important late goals which is a sign of our belief. We were grateful to squeeze in a friendly against Ryton & Crawcrook Albion on Saturday and I was delighted with the application showed by the lads as they all went at it from start to finish. They looked sharp which answered a key question as to where we were at. You cant get a full picture from just training. Today we will put our excellent run to the test and hopefully we can get something against a very strong side sitting just above us and a win helps us stay in the mix at the top. Enjoy the game,
Marc Nash

FA VASE ROUND UP Hebburn Town made the most of their break from League responsibilities by beating Lower Breck in the third round of the FA Vase. Despite going a goal behind early on to their hosts, goals from Olly Martin, Carl Taylor and Michael Richardson secured the 5-1 win. They are only two rounds away from matching last season’s effort in the same tournament but with Stockton Town, West Auckland Town and Consett all remaining in the hat, the Hornets will be very keen to avoid any familiar faces.
Also safely through to the fourth round of the FA Vase are last season’s beaten finalists Stockton Town. Taken to extra time by their hosts Bridlington Town, Michael Roberts, Kevin Hayes and Max Craggs ensured that the Anchors will carry on their impressive runs in both the league and the cup. Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Sunderland RCA has helped the Anchors leapfrog Hebburn Town into first place with three games in hand over their nearest rival.
Through to the next round but after a much closer game than their fellow Northern League sides, West Auckland Town booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Vase courtesy of a 2-1 home win over Yorkshire Amateur. With only ten minutes left on the clock, the hosts were set to be dumped out of this years FA Vase, however, two late goals from David Dowson rescued a victory from the jaws of defeat. A 40 away win at Hartlepool FC in the Durham Challenge Cup also adds more to their campaign.
They might be in the hat for the fourth round draw but Consett will have to host Wythenshawe Town in a third round replay, after Dale Pearson cancelled out a Brad Byrne penalty. Bringing the North West Counties League Division One South side to their 3G could prove to be an advantage for the Steelmen but having said that, nothing should be taken for granted in this unpredictable competition.
The Northern League are now down to only four representatives this season after Newcastle Benfield were on the wrong end of a 2-0 defeat to Vauxhall Motors at Rivacre Park. Their task was made all the more difficult after both Reece Noble and Matthew Parker were sent off, leaving Vauxhall with a relatively simple task. Now that their dreams of Wembley are over for this season, attentions must turn back to their league effort as an 11th place finish will not sit well with their passionate fan base.

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY
The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League. They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900– 01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900. After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance. They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic. The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958. North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933–34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3–0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0. A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951–52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956– 57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign. North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runners-up and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas). The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local shipyard worker. (North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was shortlived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium. Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United. The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. This campaign in which Wembley skipper Kevin Hughes made his 300th appearance the side enjoyed a promising mid-season run of results which saw them put pressure on the top three.

Two goals from Cam Cunningham helped the Robins to a dominant 4-1 win against Guisborough Town at a muddy KGV Ground. Cunningham opened the scoring with a fine strike early in the first half, before Paul New’s header gave the Robins a 2-0 lead at the break. A Mark Robinson penalty at the start of the second half gave Guisborough a fighting chance.
The Robins doubled their lead three minutes later when a Cassidy corner met the head of Paul New, who ghosted in at the far post the nod the ball into the back of the net. With five minutes before the break, the hosts almost pulled a goal back through Brooklyn Miller, only for debutant Robins keeper Bradley Skirpan to make a smart save at his near post.
However, Kyle Patton’s strike, after the Guisborough midfielder Joe Ferguson was sent off, restored the Robins’ two-goal cushion.
Guisborough came out firing in the second half and after only six minutes, the referee awarded them a spot kick when he judged New to have brought down substitute Daniel Earl.
And in added time, Cunningham weaved through the home defence to finish low and put the game beyond doubt.
After a short delay, Robinson made no mistake in sending Skirpan the wrong way to give Guisborough a way back into the game.
Shields started on the front foot and in the third minute, a Nick Cassidy freekick from just outside the area whistled over the Guisborough crossbar.
Having weathered the early storm, the Robins began to press forwards once more and in the 62nd minute, a Cunningham header, from a Cassidy freekick, forced Catterick into a save.
Three minutes later, a spectacular save from Ryan Catterick denied Cunningham after the young midfielder’s volley looked destined for the back of the net. Guisborough were struggling to get a foot hold in the game and had to wait until the 10th minute for a chance on goal, with Mason McNeill’s effort sailing high over the crossbar. In the 20th minute, Patton had a glorious chance to give the Robins the lead when he broke through on goal, however, after rounding Matthew Crust, his effort was cleared off the line by Guisborough captain Robinson. One minute later, a mistake from Catterick gifted Rhys Williams the ball on the edge of the six-yard box. Luckily for Guisborough, the young keeper recovered well to block Williams’ effort from point blank range. However, after a botched clearance, Gary Ormston was given time to cross the ball to Cunningham, who smashed the ball into the back of the net on the volley. As the game entered the 36th minute, the Robins thought they should have had a penalty when Scott McCarthy was brought down in the penalty area. However, referee Craig Dean wasn’t interested and waived their claims away.
Four minutes after that, substitute Paul VanZandvliet almost converted a low cross from McCarthy, only for the Guisborough captain to make a last-ditch challenge to prevent Shields from adding a third.
The hosts chances of getting back into the game were dealt a blow in the 72nd minute when Joe Ferguson was shown a second yellow card for a late lunge; much to the dismay of the Guisborough bench. And in the 81st minute, the Robins made good use of their advantage. After McCarthy dispossessed Miller in the centre of the pitch, he released Cunningham through on goal before the winger unselfishly set up Patton, who finished calmly into an open net. Whilst Guisborough were licking their wounds, the prolific Robins struck again in the 91st minute, with Cunningham deservedly grabbing his second of the game and the visitors fourth. A clever through ball from Adam Forster found Cunningham in acres of space on the edge of the box, with the youngster weaving his way past three defenders before thumping the ball past Catterick. This result lifts North Shields to third in the Ebac Northern League Division One table, whilst Guisborough Town now sit in 11th place.
KYLE PATTON Find out exactly how Kyle has settled in during his first year with the Robins! What a start to the season Kyle Patton has had! After joining North Shields at the start of the season, it hasn’t taken him very long to make himself right at home after some spectacular performances. He also loves to score a late goal or two, with his last gasp efforts against Newcastle Benfield and Northallerton Town helping push the club further up the table. Media Officer Ed Painter checks in with the former Bishop Auckland forward to see find out what life has been like for him at NE29. Hi Kyle, How have you found your time since joining the club in the summer? I have really enjoyed my time at Shields so far, we have a great dressing room and everyone gets on really well. Also the people who work behind the scenes for the club all do a class job and we have a great set of fans too, which makes it an enjoyable environment to be in. When you first started with North Shields, did you imagine that you would be having as prolific a season in front of goal as you are? I knew from working with Nashy and Woody previously that they would give me the freedom to attack and enjoy playing so I knew I’d get chances in games. I’m just happy I’ve been able to get on a good goal scoring run and hopefully can keep it up for the rest of the season. Out of all the goals you have scored this season, do you have a favourite and if so, which one and why? Penrith away was probably the best goal I’ve scored this season but my favourite goal I think has to be my 3rd against Benfield to get my first hattrick for the club and of this season.
If the weather behaves itself, we have six games in the month of December, five of which are at home. How big a part can the Robins supporters play in helping push the club towards a potential promotion place? I think the fans help a lot not only because it gives the players a lift but they can also get under the oppositions skin at times which puts some players off their game. The fans are a big part of the club so hopefully we can keep getting a good crowd. Speaking of the rain, it has already been the reason as to why a number of games have been called off this month (November). As a footballer, how tricky is it to keep yourself in the zone, especially with the club on a current good run of form?
Personally I love playing so when there’s a game I always look forward to being part of it. We have carried on training and keep our training standards high so hopefully this helps to keep us prepared and keep our run going. It seems that there is a lot of competition for a starting place in this team. Would that be something you agree with and if so, do you think that it helps players put in their best performances on the pitch?
We have a good squad so when you get the chance it is up to you to perform at a good standard to keep your place. I think this is important to have in a team as it keeps all players motivated.
At home to Newcastle Benfield and away against Northallerton Town, you’ve managed to score very late into the game to secure all three points. What do you think it says about the team that they are creating chances like these with such little time left in the game? It is a good sign that we are dangerous until the final whistle. It is hard to keep concentration sometimes when you’re tired so it shows a strong mentality from the lads and it helps having a good squad so there's always quality to come on from the bench and change the game. Since the 2-2 home draw against Heaton Stannington one month ago, the Robins have scored a whopping 20 times, with goals being spread about the whole team. Does this just make North Shields an even more difficult team to play against than some people already think? It is good that we have a lot of players that can chip in with goals because if one of us have an off game in front of goal there is always others who can step up and perform. Having so many goal scoring threats in the team makes it very hard for the opposition as they can’t just concentrate on keeping 1 or 2 players quiet because then they give freedom to the other threats in the team.

A late Kyle Patton goal earned the Robins a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Northallerton Town to maintain their unbeaten run. The Robins took the lead early on with Adam Forster’s low effort before Scott McCarthy doubled the visitors lead with a close range header. However, a David Hillerby strike before half time kept Northallerton within touching distance. Callum Smith then brought the hosts level just after the restart. But with moments to spare before full time, Patton’s fine finish helped the Robins come away with all three points. The hosts started brightly and after only two minutes, a good block from Ben Christensen denied Northallerton an effort on goal. Two minutes later, the Robins had a chance of their own when Rhys Williams fired over from a freekick. Despite the ball taking a deflection, the referee awarded Northallerton a goal kick. Shields were starting to warm into the game and in the eighth minute, McCarthy found himself in acres of space after a run into the penalty area. However, he was unable to connect with the cross and the ball was cleared to safety. The Robins broke the deadlock in the 13th minute when captain Forster low shot from 20-yards out zipped past home keeper Andy Coulson and into the back of the net. Northallerton responded well and only three minutes later, a long-range effort flew just wide of the upright. However, two minutes later, Patton almost doubled the lead when, under heavy defensive pressure, he fired the ball over the crossbar. In the 28th minute, a cross from McCarthy, following a mazy run, presented Ryan Carr a chance on goal, only for the Shields midfielder to see his header comfortably saved by Coulson. Four minutes later and the Robins had their second of the day when Carr made up for his wasted chance moments earlier. Following a Nick Cassidy freekick, Carr knocked the ball down to McCarthy, with the attacker left with the simplest of finishes to double the lead.
It didn’t take long for the hosts to respond and in the 35th minute, after the Shields defence failed to clear a Northallerton corner, Hillerby was on hand to volley home. The Robins pressed forward in an effort to regain their two-goal lead, with Cam Cunningham and Carr both having excellent chances. However, it was Northallerton who came closest to scoring when a cross into the box from Connor Lowes was narrowly missed by Smith. The hosts were rewarded for their efforts and in the 55th minute, Smith went one better by converting a spot kick which was awarded for a foul on Ryan McKendry by Christensen. After letting their two-goal lead slip, Shields came out firing and in the 58th minute, a great cross from Cunningham found Patton in the box but home keeper Coulson flapped at his shot and managed to clear it to safety. Substitutions for both sides broke up what was becoming a very back and forth game but with the pitch cutting up badly, the Robins were struggling to get their passing game going. In the 78th minute, the Northallerton attack were really piling pressure on the Robins defence and if not for an excellent piece of skill from Paul Robinson, which sent three attackers flying, the Robins may have conceded once again. One minute later, Patton was once again at the heart of the Robins attack and after a powerful run forwards, his shot at goal was flew harmlessly over the crossbar. With the game coming to a close, the Northallerton support thought their side had managed to secure a point against the red-hot Robins. However, with only moments to spare, Gary Ormston picked out Patton with an exquisite ball. This allowed the attacker to streak through on goal and slot the ball under Coulson and into the back of the net; securing the Robins’ fifth straight win. As a result, the Robins now climb to second in the Northern League Division One table whilst Northallerton now occupy 16th place.

CLUB HISTORY 2015/2016 was quite simply the most successful season in Newton Aycliffe’s history. The highlight was winning the Durham Challenge Cup, but added to that we had our best ever runs in the FA Cup (2nd Qualifying Round Replay) & FA Vase (5th Round-last 16). We also had our highest finish in the Ebac Northern League (6th). Having smashed their way into the Start To Learn Northern League in emphatic fashion – winning back-to-back league titles; Durham Alliance (2007-08) and the Wearside League (2008-09) – Allan Oliver’s side built on their inaugural campaign at Northern League level by topping the table for a huge eight months as they finished seven points clear of their nearest rivals in the 2010-11 title race. It is difficult to find the definitive date when Newton Aycliffe Football Club was formed. There is evidence of a Newton Aycliffe Rangers in 1951 playing in the Darlington and District League. In 1954-57 there was a NAFC playing in the Auckland and District League, firstly at Sugar Hill sports ground and then Burn Lane sports ground. There then appears to be a gap. There is a report in the Newtonian in 1965 setting out the Newton Rangers Club was formed in 1961/2 and playing home games in Darlington. A further team, Newton Aycliffe AFC was formed in 1964 (as a soccer section of the NA sports club, playing its first season in 1964/5 in the Darlington Weekend League, playing home matches at Simpasture playing fields. Newton Aycliffe Rangers later played on a pitch near Aycliffe Stock Car Stadium. In 1967/68 The Rangers won the Auckland and District League Div 2 Championship (playing home games at Croxdale Welfare). By 1968-69 they had moved to Moore Lane as part of Newton Aycliffe Sports Club and had a reserve team in the Auckland and District league Division 2. 1969 saw Aycliffe Rangers reach the Semi Final of the Durham Challenge Cup, losing to Ferryhill Athletic after beating another Northern League side Stanley United on a very heavy Moore Lane pitch! In 1969-70 a team named Newton Aycliffe SC played in the Auckland and District League Div 1 and a reserve team played in Div 2. This team won the League Challenge Cup in both 1969-70 and 70-71. As Newton Aycliffe FC the team later moved to the Teesside League and joined the Wearside League in 1984 before folding from it during the 1993-94 season. And although the current club was re-formed a number of years ago, competing successfully in the Darlington & District League its re-emergence from 2007-08 was nothing short of phenomenal. The club’s development off the field has been as rapid as that on it, as Moore Lane Park gradually transformed into a ground befitting a club at Step 5 of the National League “pyramid” System – the club averaged 191 attendance in 200910, the fifth highest average crowd in the Northern League and 222 in 2010-11, again bettered by just four teams! Of course, the club owes a lot to Sedgefield Council’s Local Improvement Programme and the Football Foundation for providing grants to afford the facilities but the football club are also indebted to the support received from Newton Aycliffe Sports Club who continue to be a massive backer and supporter of the club’s transformation. Seated accommodation was delivered in the spring of 2010 and after the assistance from local firm Finlay Structures and a team of volunteers dedicated to the club, standing accommodation for over 100 persons was installed in February 2011, ready for the club’s transition into a top-flight outfit. In December 2016 Deano Browne & a returning Danny Mellanby joined as joint manager, steering the Club 9th in Division One, following that with a 14 th place finish in 2017/2018. For 2018/2019 Danny has elected to move to a new role on the club’s committee concentrating on youth development. Andrew Jinks & former skipper Sean Tarling have come in as Assistant Managers. A poor start to the 2018/2019 season brought a change of management with former Team Northumbria manager Colin Stromsoy joining in early 2019. His input led to an improvement in form which resulted in a 12th place finish in the league.
