CHAIRMAN’S CORNER Tonight we welcome the officials, players and supporters from Ryhope Colliery Welfare F.C. to North Shields and The Daren Persson Stadium, for this EBAC Northern League fixture. We seem to be having more mid week fixtures than normal, caused by the dreadful weather we are experiencing of late. Needless to say our trip to Teesside was cancelled last Saturday, because of a waterlogged pitch. This time however, because Billingham Town have difficulties with their floodlights the re-scheduled game is on a Saturday thankfully. Just like any other season the nerves are starting to jangle a bit as the run in begins. We now find ourselves with a strong hand to play as we have games in hand on the three clubs above us. Stockton have obviously gone but Hebburn, Shildon and Consett are now feeling the pressure. They all still have to play each other or Stockton. Being where we are means we can watch the dog fight and hopefully take advantage as we wait to pounce with the games in hand. This all takes me back a couple of seasons when we finished up third on goal difference with Morpeth coming second. The really remarkable thing though was that the top three clubs all finished with over 100 points each. South Shields won the title and Morpeth and ourselves had 103 points each.

I don't think that had ever happened in The Northern League before. It won't happen this year either but at least it makes it all the more exciting for the supporters involved.

Back to tonight and the game at hand. Having lost to Ryhope earlier in the season at their place in The F.A. Cup it would be nice to turn the tables and get the points on offer. Whatever happens enjoy the game. Up the Robins.

Alan Matthews

THE EDITOR Recently, I spent two weeks with the media team of York City Football Club and I feel that I have come back far better for the experience. From researching former players to interviewing the likes of Steve Watson, Kurt Willoughby and Steve McNulty, I couldn’t have wished for a better experience. I was also given the opportunity to cover three games, one for the first team and two for their Under 19 side. Travelling to Boston United was a particular highlight as I have always wanted to visit York Street but having said that, the opportunity to cover two academy games was also something which I enjoyed.

Another home game under the flood lights. I can’t think of any other better way of spending a Wednesday evening. Tonight, we welcome Ryhope CW to the Daren Persson Stadium. It goes without saying that I hope everyone associated with our visitors has a safe journey home after the game. This has been my second full season with North Shields and as the old saying goes: time flies when you are having fun. Now that this cliché has been put to one side, it really has been a pleasure to design and edit this programme. Never in my wildest imagination did I think that doing a programme would involve as much work as it does. It definitely gives me an appreciation for those who do put in the time and effort to make their editions as good as possible.

I was even supposed to cover the home game between York City and Hereford but considering that Hereford is suffering a lot of flooding issues, and there were reports of 60mph winds, the game was postponed. Now that I am back amongst the fold with North Shields, I look forward to getting stuck in and working harder than before. My first game back was against Morpeth Town midweek and whilst we suffered a 3-1 loss, we competed with our NPL opponents throughout the game. It was also good to see Callum Smith scoring once again. Since then, our game against Billingham Town was called off due to a waterlogged pitch and I picked up a heavy cold so if I look like death today, you will know exactly why. But on a positive note, it was great to see Craig Spooner joining up with the team once again. Not going to lie, I was gutted to see him leave in the summer but after brief stints with Blyth Spartans, Whitley Bay and West Auckland Town, I am glad that he is now on our side as we chase that promotion spot. DIVISION ONE ROUND UP We may as well hand Stockton Town the Division One title now. Another win for the Anchors, this time against fellow promotion chasers Consett AFC, has put the club 15 points clear at the top of the table. Still on only one league defeat all season, Stockton seemingly have more than one foot in the next division above. Only a monumental collapse would see the Anchors concede the title to either Hebburn Town or Shildon AFC. Today’s home game against a strong Guisborough Town side could prove to be a bit of a banana skin though. Last Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to table-topping Stockton Town was a blow to Consett’s automatic promotion hopes. Yes, they still sit in fourth and mathematically, they seemingly have a very strong chance of success this season, however, they are now six points behind third-placed Shildon having played the same number of games. On top of that, North Shields are still level on points with the Steelmen, but the Robins have two games in hand. Winning only one of those would send Shields up to fourth so Consett will now likely be hoping for some kind of a blip in NE29. Despite having something of a free hit against Morpeth Town last Wednesday, the Robins fell to a 3-1 defeat to their Northern Premier League visitors. Despite going into the break level at 1-1, two goals at the beginning and end of the second period cost the Robins another St James’ Park appearance. Following that, Saturday’s game against Billingham Town fell fowl of the weather, meaning that today’s game at home to Ryhope will be their first chance to bounce straight back. New(ish) signing Craig Spooner will no doubt add even more quality to a packed out midfield. The promotion hopes of Guisborough Town have faded somewhat over the last few weeks. Still sitting in sixth place, but having played two more games than Newton Aycliffe in seventh, a 1-1 draw against the criminally inconsistent Newcastle Benfield wont have reassured many that this is going to be their season. Newly signed striker Craig Hutchinson, who was on fire for Billingham Town at the start of the season, hasn't been as prolific for the Priorymen. A silver lining though is that if they can keep the core of this squad together next season, they could prove to be very strong.

A season which started out on a difficult note, due to Blyth Spartans picking three or four of their starters from last season, Benfield have struggled to hit any kind of run of form. Because of this, they sit in 11th place and have not won a game in their last five outings. Facing Guisborough Town was always going to be a tough nut to crack, however, they did come away with a creditable 1-1 draw, something not many say them getting. The form of Cyril Giraud and veteran Paul Brayson may see them finish in the top half of the Division One table this season, but I can’t see them finishing anywhere higher than that.

Updated on

DIVISION TWO ROUND UP With West Allotment Celtic stuttering as of late, a golden chance has been handed to Redcar Athletic to reduce the points gap between second and first place. Now only five points off first, albeit having played two more games, those Redcar supporters will be beginning to believe that not only are they on the cusp of enjoying a promotion, the league title is still on the cards. Saturday’s 3-1 home win against Jarrow hands the club their second win on the bounce. The test will now be if they can return from Birtley Town with another important three points.

Since being promoted from the Northern Alliance a few years ago, Jarrow have made themselves right at home in the Northern League, pushing some of the bigger clubs all the way. This season, there has even been the faint whiff of a promotion campaign but after their 3-1 defeat to Redcar Athletic, those hopes could have very well ended. The next two games against Durham City and Bedlington Terriers gives the club a chance for six points, but then a crunch tie against West Allotment Celtic will test Jarrow to it’s limits. Several weeks ago, I spoke about how well the club had responded after their bubble had seemingly burst. Well, fast forward to today and it seems that bubble has been burst once again. In difficult conditions, RACA fell to a 2-0 home loss to Tow Law Town, with both goals coming in the last ten minutes of the game. The result sees them drop to fourth in the Division Two table, with Carlisle City level on points in fifth but having played two games less. An away tie against Brandon United has all of a sudden turned into a must win! To put it simply, Matty Moffat has been a huge player for the club this season. His two late goals at Kingsley Park helped them to another win against one of the promotion chasing sides. As a result, they are now only two points off that final promotion place, something which looked well beyond their reach at the start of the season. A home game against Easington Colliery before a trip to Redcar Athletic will be a huge challenge for the club but if they win them both, it could set the Lawyers up nicely ahead of the end of the season.

n 22/02/2020

One of the most important things in having a successful side at any level is making sure that you have a settled squad. Unfortunately for Durham City, they seem to be making signings each and every week. At the time of writing this, Dan Johnson has joined the bottom club in Division Two but in all truth, by the time you read this column, they could well have made many more. Five straight losses has seen them drop below second bottom Brandon United and a home game against top of the table West Allotment Celtic doesn’t exactly hand them much promise. There is always the chance of a surprise however!

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY

The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League. They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900– 01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900. After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance. They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic. The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958. North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933–34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3–0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0. A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951–52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956– 57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign. North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runners-up and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas). The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local shipyard worker. (North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was shortlived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium. Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United. The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. This campaign in which Wembley skipper Kevin Hughes made his 300th appearance the side enjoyed a promising mid-season run of results which saw them put pressure on the top three.

Callum Smith’s first half strike was not enough as North Shields fell to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Morpeth Town; ending their Senior Cup campaign. Jeff Henderson gave the Highwaymen the early lead with an unstoppable towering header. However, Smith’s fine finish gave the Robins a deserved equalizer, following Connor Campbell’s excellent pass. Morpeth re-took the lead early in the second period when Joe Walton finished well after the visitors broke on goal. And Liam Noble sealed Morpeth’s place in the Senior Cup Final when his curled freekick bent into the bottom corner. Shields came close to making a perfect start when Campbell’s header zipped narrowly over the crossbar in the second minute. The hosts were pinning their higher division opponents back and in the ninth minute, Kyle Patton dragged his shot inches wide of the post. Home dominance was not rewarded when, in the 12th minute, Liam Henderson towered above his marker to power his header home, giving Morpeth the lead against the run of play. Only the heroics of Morpeth ‘keeper Dan Lowson was keeping the Highwaymen in the lead, with the shot-stopper tipping Wayne Buchanan’s header over the crossbar.

With both teams trading blows, it was the visitors who came closest to adding to their score when a loose ball fell to the feat of Sam Hodgson in the 38th minute, but the midfielder blazed his shot well over the bar. Seconds before half time, the Robins hit back when Campbell won possession in the centre of the park, before feeding the ball through the Smith. Under pressure, the former Dunston attacker fired the ball into the bottom corner of the net, sending the Robins into the break level. However, five minutes after the restart, Morpeth re-took the lead when Walton finished off a flowing move, which saw the Highwaymen break from one side of the pitch to the other, when he fired into the bottom corner. The visitors almost added a third moments later when Jack Foalle’s shot needed to be cleared off the line, following Walton’s deflected effort which went behind for a corner. Foalle, who struck the winner in last seasons’ Senior Cup Final, was starting to have an effect on the game and in the 64th minute, he should have done better when he fired over from within the penalty area.

But the visitors were beginning to turn the screw in the 25th minute.

But as the Robins pressed up the pitch in search of that all important leveller, Morpeth put the game to bed when Noble, who joined the Highwaymen from Hartlepool United, fired his low freekick straight into the bottom corner in the 89th minute.

Walton raced clear of his marker before Chris McDonald’s impressive recovery forced the striker to fire into the side netting.

This proved to be the last real action of the game as the brave Robins were unable to make it to the Final for the second year running.

A goal in the first half was enough to give the Robins a battling 1-0 win over in-form Ryhope CW.

However, the closest either team came to opening the scoring was in the 30th minute.

Carr scored his third goal in four games late into the first half to give the Robins a deserved lead at the break.

Ryhope striker Craig Ellison rose highest, only to narrowly miss out on heading the visitors in front; with the ball skimming wide.

And despite several chances for the visitors in the second period, the hosts held on for their second win in three days. After a windy opening couple of minutes, the Robins started to apply pressure on the Ryhope defence with Adam Forster finding Sean McRoberts on the wing, however, the attacker was unlucky when he couldn’t quite get his foot behind the cross. Two minutes later, the visitors tried their luck on goal when James Ellis struck the ball on the edge of the area, only for Greg Purvis to pull off a smart save. Jack Donnison was causing all sorts of problems for the opposition defenders and in the 18th minute, he delivered an inviting cross into the box. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a red shirt in the box to fire the ball home. With the wind beginning to pick up, both teams were struggling to maintain possession of the ball. In the 23rd minute, Forster was unlucky to not quite be able to get on the end of a beautiful Donnison cross.

Four minutes later, the Robins finally took the lead when a Paul Robinson corner was poorly defended, allowing Carr to collect the ball on the angle before rifling his shot into the bottom corner of the net; giving the hosts the lead at the break. The second half saw Ryhope dig deep in search of the equalising goal and if not for some fine defending from the Shields back line, plus one or two good saves from Purvis, they could very well have turned this game on its head. James Ellis in particular was causing the home defence a few issues and in the 48th minute, some smart defending from Kevin Hughes was needed to prevent the Ryhope attacker from equalising straight from the restart. However, the Robins dug deep to see out the game and earn another three points which sees them solidify their mid table position.

RYHOPE CW HISTORY Ryhope Colliery Welfare was founded by the Coal Miners of Ryhope in 1892. It was not until 1927–28 that it won its first league title. However the club enjoyed most of its success in the 1960s, winning the Wearside Football League on four occasions, the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup twice as well as the Sunderland Shipowners Cup and League Challenge Cup during the decade. In the 1967–68 season, the team reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the only time in its history, losing 1–0 at home to then Football League Division 4 side Workington. The club’s next successful season was 1977–78, finishing 3rd in the league, winning the League Cup with the season culminating in winning the Durham Challenge Cup for the only time in the club’s history. Between the 1988–89 and 1991–92 seasons, the club was known as Vaux Ryhope after a merger with Sporting Club Vaux (previously South Hetton FC) In season 2009–10 under the guidance of newly appointed manager Martin Swales Ryhope won the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup for the first time in 44 years as well as being runners up in the league their highest position also for 44 years. Season 2010–11 however was the most successful in the club’s history, winning all four competitions the Wearside League Title, Sunderland Shipowners Cup, Monkwearmouth Charity Cup and League Cup.This was only the third time in the history of the League that this has been achieved by a club. However, in season 2011–12 Ryhope repeated the feat of the previous season winning all four competitions and gained promotion to the Northern League for the first time in its history. It ended the season having only been defeated once in its last 70 Wearside League and Cup games. The team continued its success in season 2012–13 finishing runners up to Crook Town and gaining promotion to the Northern League 1st Division at its first attempt, losing only three games and scoring 147 league goals. However, due to off the field ground grading issues, rather than making the step up the club was relegated back to the Wearside League. It was a decision taken by the Northern League Management Committee and endorsed by the FA. Season 2013–14 saw the team back in the Wearside League and finish runners up to Stockton Town and with the ground issues solved the team again was promoted to the Northern League 2nd division for the season 2014–15. Under Gary Pearson and Stuey Gooden, in 2015-16 the club finished runners up in Northern League Division Two and gained promotion to Division One for the first time in the club’s 124-year history. In their first season in the top flight in 2016-17 the team finished in 17th place, they followed this up with an 11th placed finish in 2017-18 The 2018-19 season showed further progression for the club, both on and off the pitch. Additional offfield support was established and ongoing ties with Sunderland University continued. Gaz strengthened his team throughout the season resulting in a top half finish and a first win ever, over local rivals Sunderland RCA.
