CHAIRMAN’S CORNER Tonight it's back to League Cup action as we welcome the officials, players and supporters of Ryton & Crawcrook Albion to The Morgue for tonight's game. We got to this stage of the competition by winning our group. We now enter the knockout matches and obviously we would like to make progress, following our successful win against West Allotment Celtic in the Northumberland Senior Cup last Wednesday here at the Morgue. That win of course was followed by our hard fought victory at Seaham Red Star in the league. The games really are coming thick and fast now. That is the welcome penalty of having a successful team on the pitch. At Seaham, Kyle Patton notched another two goals, he's in top form at the moment, and it's great to watch the goals flowing. Things are getting tighter and tighter at the top of the league and other than Stockton, no one can predict who the final three will be at the end of the season. All we can do is to get behind the team and give the players our full support. I mentioned Cam Cunningham and Paul Van in out last programme. It was great to see both of them back in action at Seaham. Here's hoping their recovery continues tonight, and they both get some game time.

Back to tonight and the task at hand. Just like Allotment, Ryton & Crawcrook are among the pace setters in division two, and pushing for promotion. Just like last weeks game I expect this one to be just as tough. So here's hoping we can get over the line and into the hat for the next round of the competition. Up the Robins

Alan Matthews

MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good Evening and welcome to our fans and the Ryton players, officials and supporters for this last 16 league cup tie. We have negotiated the group stage with 3 wins and a draw, with our opponents finishing second in their group, including a tremendous result when they defeated Stockton. Manager Tony Fawcett has got his side right in the promotion mix this year and they look well placed to secure a top four place on offer. Obviously losing former youngster Jack Cooper to Benfield is a blow but they have responded well and produced an excellent 5-0 win against Bedlington on Saturday. I’ve been very happy with our recent results since we lost at Shildon before Xmas, which ended our run. I think five wins from six games since shows the quality and desire we have to keep pushing this season. I admit the only blemish was a very poor 2nd half showing against RCA in that recent period. We are lying 5th in the league and well in touch with everyone above apart from Stockton. We are in the Semi Finals of the NFA Senior Cup again but this time we are guaranteed a massive game once the draw is made. Tonight’s game offers another opportunity that we will be going all out take. I was very happy to welcome Cam back into the team on Saturday at Seaham, after he missed a month following a bad bout of the mumps. With Cam, Fozzy back and Paul Van close to full fitness, we are getting near to full strength and with Gaz Bainbridge back in training, hopefully we can kick on during the last few months of the season. Lastly, the final word has to go to Gary Ormston who made his 200th appearance on Saturday. To have those appearances in his thirties it is testament to his attitude, fitness and love of the game; to be still churning out consistency week after week. Sadly, it looks like a dying breed of player that can keep high standards for many years and play for pure enjoyment well into their thirties. We are fortunate to have a couple more in Bucks and Robbo. Hopefully their brilliant examples can rub off on our younger lads. Enjoy the game,

Marc Nash

DIVISION ONE ROUND UP Arguably the biggest game of the weekend was at Dean Street last weekend, with top of the table Stockton Town travelling to face Shildon in second. Despite coming under heavy pressure, the Anchors were able to secure a vital 2-0 win; a result which gives them even more breathing room at the top of Division One. Another statement of intent for Stockton is their acquisition of Jonathan Franks who, after a long professional career, has returned to where it all began for him.

It wasn’t just Stockton who benefitted from Shildon losing at home. Hebburn Town were able to leapfrog The Railwaymen into second place, after their comfortable 4-1 away win at Ryhope CW. After a mid-season wobble, and the additions of Mark Foden, Tom Potter and Michael McKeown, the Hornets have steadied the ship and look as fearsome a force as they have done this season. A tricky League Cup game against Newcastle Benfield awaits before a long trip south to face struggling Northallerton Town. Many thought that the loss of top scorer Dean Thexton to Shildon AFC would damage Newton Aycliffe’s hopes of challenging for a promotion spot. However, their fans need not worry as new signing Adam Burnicle, who joined the club from West Auckland Town, has settled in nicely and even helped the club to a dominant 4-0 away win against Sunderland RCA. Sitting in eighth place in the Division One table, but with games in hand on the teams above, Newton Aycliffe cannot be counted out, with a game against Ryhope CW between them and the next round of the League Cup. It has certainly been a very turbulent time at Billingham Town in recent weeks. After their manager left his post, they were to soon lose their top scorer Craig Hutchinson to Guisborough Town; a man who played such a key role in their promotion to Div One. No such replacement has been made of date but more important issues have taken a priority, such as the floodlight issues which have essentially reshuffled the Billy Town fixture list. With most home games now kicking off at 2pm, and a heft bill to fix the floodlights awaiting, it might prove to be a stressful end to their season.

Bottom of the league for such a long stretch of the season, Northallerton Town were handed a massive boost when they deservedly beat Whitley Bay 1-0 at home; only their second home win of the season. Whilst it might only lift them to 18th place, it shows that the club do have what it takes to compete in this Division; with the signings of Chris Stockton, Micky Rae and Nat Skidmore strengthening their playing squad. The fixtures don’t get any easier though as home games against Hebburn Town and fellow strugglers Penrith will no doubt test the club to its limits.

DIVISION TWO ROUND UP After their defeat to North Shields in the Northumberland Senior Cup Quarter Final, Division Two leaders West Allotment Celtic were handed an immediate opportunity to bounce back when they travelled to Billingham Synthonia. In what was an incredibly close game, West came out 3-2 winners, courtesy of a Shane Jones double and a goal from Abubaker Salim. Seaham Red Star are the next team up in the League Cup, giving West yet another opportunity to prove they can match up against teams from Division One. The loss of Jack Cooper to Newcastle Benfield was a major blow to RACA in their pursuit of a promotion spot. Things also went from bad to worse when they lost 5-2 to fellow promotion rivals Crook Town; a game which saw two RACA players sin binned. However, clearly in the mood to wright all previous wrongs, they smashed struggling Bedlington Terriers 5-0, reasserting their position in the league as promotion contenders. The signings of Ross Thirlaway from Heaton and Michael Bell from Bedlington will help to strengthen an already strong team.

Replacing Connor Campbell, who scored a whopping 30 goals for the Stan last season, was always going to be a challenging task. After a bit of an up and down start to the season, Heaton Stannington have really settled and are on a very good current run of form. The signing of striker Michael Baxter from West Allotment has given them a dangerous threat at the top of the pitch and could, at the end of the season, prove to be a difference maker!

Similar to Heaton Stan, at the start of this campaign, Tow Law Town were at the wrong end of the table and wondering how they were going to turn things around. Thankfully for the Lawyers, the red-hot form of Matty Moffat has helped the club climb well away from danger; even to a point where promotion could be a possibility. Wins against Birtley Town, Crook Town, Brandon United, Sunderland West End and Washington have helped Tow Law become one of the form teams in the league. Is it all too little too late though?

26/01/2020

Poor old Brandon United, still rock-bottom of the league as we are set to enter the month of February. Whilst conceding far too many goals is an obvious problem to point out, their efforts in front of goal are an even bigger cause for alarm at Welfare Ground. So far this season, they have only managed to score a measly 21 goals, with Matthew Lovegreen their top scorer on only three! However, there is a little cause for optimism as in their last fixture against an impressive Willington side, they were able to hold them to a 0-0 draw; very against their current run of form. They are now only one point from second bottom Durham City whilst still having two games in hand.

FROM KINGSLEY PARK TO THE MORGUE I remember the moment I was approached, as a student, by RACA about coming on board and helping their media output. I was walking through Eldon Square ahead of Newcastle United v AFC Bournemouth; my first time visiting St James’ Park. Having never worked for a sports team, I thought I must have been a different level of crazy as not long after Christmas, I was sat in a van on the way to my first Northern League away game against Tow Law Town. Fast forward to today and the couple of months I spent working with Ryton & Crawcrook Albion are among the best moments of my life; highlighted by our amazing E Armstrong Memorial League Cup run; seeing off Tow Law and Hebburn Town before losing 2-0 in the final against Chester-le-Street Town. But unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, I knew that I would no longer be able to volunteer my time with a club I had become closely attached to. Coincidentally, about a week or two after I had come to this realisation, an advert from North Shields popped up on Social Media, asking for anybody who would be interested in becoming their new programme editor. I decided to throw my hat into the ring and sure enough, Sean Redford got in touch and invited me to the next home game against Penrith. It was an entertaining game, for the neutral at least, as North Shields were held to a 3-3 draw by the lowly Cumbrian side. Funnily enough, after a day or two of thinking, I had actually turned down the position with Shields, simply because as a trainee journalist, there simply wasn’t enough writing for me to justify coming on board. Telling me that he would get back to me, I was 100% certain that I had missed out as it had been several weeks of hearing nothing. I was so convinced that a move to North Shields was off the table, I had applied for a spot on the Hebburn Town media team. But rather surprisingly, I got an email soon after I started talking with the Hornets, saying that if I would come work with the Robins instead, I could do match reporting, on top of looking after the programme. This was all I needed to pull out of the race to work with Hebburn (a role my flat mate currently holds) and join the team at NE29. The first month of my first season (2018/19) was pretty rubbish by all accounts. Five straight losses had created something of an uncomfortable atmosphere at the Daren Persson Stadium. However, this all changed with an away trip to the free-spending Hebburn Town. We had put in a battling performance but despite goals from Gary Day and Lewis Suddick, we were 3-2 down with minutes remaining. That’s when Paul Robinson decided to have a shot from the half way line, catching Hebburn keeper Sam Taylor off his line; sending the visiting supporters, including commercial manager Steve Arkle, into raptures! From there, I could really get a sense of how big a club North Shields are and how well supported they are. I now consider myself a North Shields fan but as Sean Mulligan will know, when results are in, I will always immediately cast my eye towards how my friends at RACA had done.

Edward Painter - Media Officer

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY

The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League. They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900– 01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900. After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance. They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic. The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958. North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933–34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3–0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0. A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951–52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956– 57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign. North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runners-up and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas). The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local ship yard worker. (North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was shortlived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium. Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United. The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. This campaign in which Wembley skipper Kevin Hughes made his 300th appearance the side enjoyed a promising mid-season run of results which saw them put pressure on the top three.

A first half double from Kyle Patton helped North Shields to a closely-contested 2-1 win against Seaham Red Star.

In the 56th minute, after Paul New denied Seaham with a tremendous last-ditch tackle, the Star finally got on the score sheet.

Patton gave Shields an early advantage after six minutes; converting a Cam Cunningham cross from close range.

Wilson, under pressure from two defenders, manager to hook the ball over Purvis from the edge of the area.

The in-form attacker doubled the lead not long after, when he reacted quickest to a deflected Nick Cassidy freekick. Former Robin Dan Wilson pulled a goal back for Seaham at the start of the second half, with a lobbed finish under pressure. But Shields were able to hold on for an important three points at the Ferguson Motor Repairs Stadium. The Robins started on the front foot and after only six minutes, Cunningham collected a Cassidy cross before centering the ball to Patton; leaving the attacker to beat the keeper with a close-range shot. It took a while for the Star to settle into the game but in the 16th minute, Paul Gardiner’s ferocious drive took a wicked deflection to steer the ball behind for a corner. Starting up front for the Robins today, Callum Smith almost created a golden opportunity to double the lead. In the 21st minute, only for his cross to be smothered at the feet of Patton by Chris Bannon. Chances were few and far between but approaching the 31st minute, a deep cross from Jaden Cahill-Taylor got caught in the wind, almost catching Greg Purvis out at the far post before sailing behind for a goal kick. But only one minute later, the visitors had a deserved second goal, after Patton reacted quickest to a deflected Cassidy freekick; leaving the former Bishop Auckland attacker with a simple finish. Seaham reacted well to the latest setback, with Wilson muscling his way to the by-line before his cross-goal pass was blazed over by Richard Coulson from inside the six-yard box. The Robins were finishing the half strongly and could have had a third goal in the 36th minute, only for Cassidy’s dangerous freekick to drift narrowly over the crossbar. With half time fast approaching, the hosts were trying to get one foot back into the game, with David Robinson’s low drive comfortably saved by Purvis. The start of the second half saw more pressure on the Seaham goal, with good play from Cassidy and Gary Ormston releasing Patton on goal, only for Patton’s shot to take a deflection before going behind.

Seaham were beginning to threaten a lot more going forwards, with Wilson’s shot from an angle flying into the side netting in the 61st minute. However, the referee pulled the game back for a freekick, with Wilson having been fouled in the build up. Despite Mark Waite’s freekick crashing into the wall, Paul Weldon’s follow up effort came within a whisker of sneaking into the top corner. Straight from the goal kick, Cunningham fed Smith through on goal. After the former Dunston winger cut inside of Liam Gillesphey, Bannon blocked his goal bound shot before Scott Young could clear the ball to safety. The Seaham defence was at sixes and sevens as only one minute later, Ormston’s perfectly weighted pass found Cassidy in space, with the right-back’s volley whistling narrowly over. Having just been brought on, Connor Campbell almost made an immediate impact in the 66th minute when his towering header, from a Cassidy freekick, flew the wrong side of the upright. Wilson was proving to be a problem for the Shields defence and in the 68th minute, a header of his own, from a freekick on the right-hand side, forced Purvis into a fantastic save at his near post. Seaham continued to press hard in search of a levelling goal, but the Robins defence was proving a stubborn nut to crack They came ever so close to getting that equaliser as time was running out, when substitute Morgan Dart tried to emulate Wilson’s strike at the beginning of the half. This time, the Shields keeper was alert to the danger. The Robins could have wrapped up the game with minutes remaining, when substitute Scott McCarthy found the ball at his feet in the penalty area, following a Cassidy corner. Though his left-footed shot was charged down and blocked by Bannon, a poor clearance allowed Cassidy another chance to whip the ball into the area, with McCarthy volleying over from inside the penalty area. After today’s result, the Robins remain in fifth place, whilst Seaham Red Star occupy 17th.

ANTHONY WOODHOUSE As former Los Angeles Lakers Head Coach Phil Jackson said, “the strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each individual member is the team.” A great team ethic is certainly something March Nash and Anthony Woodhouse have been working tirelessly to introduce to the squad since they joined the club. We speak to Woody about tonight’s League Cup match and how important a role the supporters play in pushing the club forwards. Q: This season has seen the Northern League Cup get something of a facelift, with the introduction of a group stage before the standard knockout rounds. From a coach’s point of view, what are your thoughts on the changes? A: I know that the cup format has received some criticism, however I personally think it’s been great. We don’t carry a huge squad but this allowed us the opportunity to give players game time instead of going Saturday to Saturday. Q: Given how the club are actively chasing one of the three promotion places this season, is the League Cup seen as something of a distraction or can it help the team push on to the end of the season?

A: I wouldn’t say it was a distraction. As a manager and as a player, you simply want to win every game. Yes - Promotion is the ultimate goal but considering that we’re up against some large spenders who have bottomless budgets, we feel we’re competing and that’s all we can ask. We’ve got 3 things to play for and we’ll be going out to win every game from now until the end of the season. Q: Considering how much strength in depth we have in the team, it must make things incredibly difficult for you and Nashy when picking a starting eleven! A: You could say that but when the starting 11 are winning/performing as well as they have been then it makes it easier. But we are lucky to have options and competition all over the pitch and in all positions. I have to say, the dressing room is the best it’s been since we started the rebuilding of the side. Q: How soon after the end of last season were you and Nashy putting plans together for how you wanted the team to shape up for this campaign? A: I don’t think we stopped. We haven’t stopped now to be honest as we’re always looking to add quality to our current side. We’re already planning for next season. I know there were some long hours put in to get these lads we have and we’re very happy with the business we carried out. Q: Ryton & Crawcrook Albion have promotion hopes of their own after what has been an impressive season for them in Division Two. Will the message to the team before the game be not to take any notice of which division Ryton are in and to get the job done?

A: Absolutely. They’re a well respected club and do things right. We’ve a good relationship with them as we’ve loaned a couple of players to them last season. I’m sure if they regain a good run and spate of form they’ll be up there competing for a promotion spot. Q: Midway through the season, we saw Callum Smith and Callum Patton brought into the team, the latter of which on a short-term loan. What was the thinking behind bringing them in and what kind of an impact did/have they had? A: Patton is a player we had at Whitley Bay and progressed to Whitby. We were alerted of his loan availability and with the heavy winter schedule, we thought it was a good opportunity for both parties Smith is the type of player that simply doesn’t come up all the time. When we found he was available, we contacted Dunston & all three of us contacted him to show our intent and interest. He’s shown in spells what he’s got and I have no doubt he’ll become a favourite once he gets match fit and becomes a consistent starter. Q: Finally, the fans have certainly travelled in their numbers to support the Robins this season. How important has their backing been for the team? A: The fans are huge to this club. I don’t think they know how much impact they have on games. The lads love to kick to the Clubhouse end simply to score a last minute winner so they can celebrate with them. On a serious note, we, as a club, squad, group - whatever you want to call it need to stick together and we need each other to get to where we want to be. I’m hopeful of a big crowd tonight and I’m confident we can progress. Let’s hope we can go one place better than last season in this competition.

Goals from Gaz Bainbridge, Jack Cooper, Gary Day and Callum Johnston secured the Robins a resounding 4-1 friendly win over Ryton & Crawcrook Albion.

After making a number of changes, Shields carried on where they left off, when Johnston’s shot from the edge of the box struck the post; with the keeper rooted to the spot.

Having struck the post early on, Bainbridge’s close-range headed effort gave the Robins the lead at half time.

However, three minutes into the second half, Ryton drew level when Jasper managed to outmuscle his marker before delicately chipping the ball over the onrushing Michael Robinson and into the back of the net.

A well-worked goal from Scott Jasper drew the visitors level shortly after the restart.

And with time running out, strikes from Day and Johnston gave the Robins a morale boosting win ahead of the league match against Shildon.

The home support didn’t have to wait too long for a response as in the 52nd minute, substitute Cooper worked his way inside the penalty area before shooting at goal, with the ball bobbling over the line despite the best efforts of Ryton fullback Mason Stephenson.

On a still night, it was the Robins who threatened to open the scoring first when a brilliant through ball found Sean McRoberts out on the wing, in the ninth minute, before the winger’s cross was plucked out of the air by Ryton keeper David Hansen.

Having fallen behind for the second time, the visitors did not let that deter them as they continued to press forward. More defending from the entire Robins defence managed to keep Jasper and his striking partner Sam Norris at bay.

After an evenly contested 15 minutes, the Robins began to dominate time in possession. In the 21st minute, a fizzing pass from Jack Donnison found Bainbridge before the striker thundered his effort from distance against the crossbar.

With the game entering the final 15 minutes, the hosts quality began to shine through and in the 75th minute, a fantastic run from Johnston, and a perfect cross to match, fell to Day on the edge of the six-yard box. After dummying his first shot, he emphatically hammered home to give Shields a two-goal advantage.

Cooper soon restored the lead after his shot was bundled over the line by a visiting defender.

Moments later, the Robins went close once again through the returning Adam Forster when he managed to round the keeper before firing at goal from an angle, only to see the ball blocked on the line. Pressure was beginning to mount on the Ryton defence and in the 25th minute, Donnison broke free down the flank before firing a dangerous cross into the box; one which Hansen did well to recover. However, four minutes later, the dam finally broke when a Paul Robinson cross found Bainbridge unmarked in the box, with the striker thumping his header into the back of the net. Despite going behind, the visitors kept themselves in the game, with some impressive defending from the Robins back line stifling the Ryton attack; keeping the score 1-0 heading into the break.

This goal seemed to be the straw that broke the camel’s back as only two minutes later, Johnston got himself deservedly onto the scoresheet when he headed home from close range after the ball was parried. Despite the now emphatic score line, Ryton still worked themselves into dangerous positions and with a little more of lady luck on their side, they could have very well added a second or a third. With Marcus Giles and Tom Hizzett making appearances for the Robins against Newcastle Blue Star, it was the turn of youth prospect Robbie Christie to get some valuable game time. In the 80th minute, some excellent play between the New Hartley Junior player and Josh Skivington almost resulted in another chance on goal, only for a defending to clear the ball to safety.

CLUB HISTORY Shortly after the start of the 1970 - 71 football season John Oliver, the club’s first Secretary, and Les Robson were approached to see if a club could be formed quickly to take over the fixtures of Prudhoe and West Wylam Co-op who had just resigned from the Northern Combination League. After securing a loan from Ryton Social Club the club got permission to play football at Stargate. RYTON FC played their first Northern Combination League game, a 3-3 draw, against works team Parsons Athletic on Saturday 17th October 1970. The mid 1980’s saw the club transfer to Clara Vale for our home games & during this period Ryton won the Prudhoe Hospital Cup twice, the Northern Combination League Cup as well as the Durham County Trophy. Following the amalgamation, in 1988, of the Northern Alliance, the Northern Combination and the Northern Amateur Leagues into three divisions, Ryton were allocated a position in the First Division of the newly structured Northern Football Alliance League, winning that title in 1997, thus securing promotion to the Premier Division. Off the field, a lottery grant achieved in 1998, saw a further move to our current home at Kingsley Park. The club stayed in the Alliance until gaining promotion to the Northern League at the end of the 2004–05 season. 2005-06 marked our first campaign in the Northern League finishing a respectable 11th place in Division 2, followed by a 12 th place finish in 2006-07 then a commendable 3rd place in 2007-08 which gained us promotion to Division 1 for the 2008-09 season where we finished a very creditable 10th place. Unfortunately that was where the upward progress ended as the following season we finished 17th, then came the infamous 2010-11 season which saw us finish rock bottom with just 8pts, receiving a whole host of league & cup drubbings on the way including Shildon beating us 10-0 & 7-0 in the league & losing 8-0 at home to South Shields in the Vase. Coupled with the fact that our facilities are based in Crawcrook, and wishing to involve the local community further, the club sought, and was subsequently granted permission by The Durham FA, to change our name to RYTON & CRAWCROOK ALBION F.C. at the commencement of the 2011-12 campaign in which we finished 18th in our first season back in the Second Division. 2012-13 saw a slight improvement in fortunes with a 14th place finish. Then our new, very young outfit in 2013-14 under the guidance of new manager John Wilson, faced a tough campaign with survival the target, famously secured on our last match of the season. With the squad older and wiser, stability was achieved with a mid table finish in 14/15 2015/16 started under the stewardship of Wilson's former assistant Paul Dobie with Sunderland Academy coach Jordan Moore as coach but despite a decent start Paul resigned in October & was swiftly replaced by former Ryton player Craig Robson with Jordan remaining as coach. The campaign ultimately proved slightly disappointing with RACA losing every cup game & finishing only 16th in the table. 16/17 started even worse & Robson stood down, Moore moving up to manager before Peter Bryson took over in January 2017 with Jordan reverting back to a coaching role. However Brysa resigned just two months into the job & so Albion quickly acquired the services of Monkseaton boss Anthony Fawcett who steered the club away from relegation. Jordan moved to Whickham so Tony & new assistant Simon Moody transformed the squad in 2017-18 with a host of players from Monkseaton FC & North Tyneside signing on. A steady season followed culminating in an appearance in the E Armstrong Cup final, Albion’s first Northern League Cup final which we lost 0-2 to Chester-le-Street. 2018-19 started well, dipped badly then finished well with a run of eight games unbeaten leading to much optimism for 2019/20, especially after a pre-season of five wins and a draw.
