CHAIRMAN’S CORNER Today we welcome the officials, players and supporters from Sunderland RCA to the morgue for this first fixture of the new decade at The Daren Persson Stadium. We hope they enjoy their short stay here, before the journey back home down the A19 to Ryhope. We did play our opening game of this season at our visitors ground and deserved to get something from the game but were on the end of some dreadful refereeing decisions and lost 2-1, some of which had to be seen to be believed. Here's hoping today's officials are more capable than those that day.
W did win our local derby against Whitley Bay on Boxing day, and were good value for our win in front of our biggest gate of the season so far. I thought both sides gave their all on a very heavy pitch and turned in an exciting performance, with both goal keepers making vital saves at crucial times. That win has seen us climb to fourth in the league. Despite losing clubs to promotion last season, the league remains one of the strongest in the country, and has lost non of it's competitive edge. Indeed, who would try to name the three clubs in line for promotion at the end of this campaign. There are still at least eight in contention all of whom will prove worthy opponents for any opposition at a higher level.
Back to today and the job at hand. We hope our squad can return to full fitness and get those three vital points to maintain our own promotion push. Whatever happens enjoy the game and as usual up the Robins.
Alan Matthews
MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good afternoon and welcome to our visitors Sunderland RCA for our first Northern League game of the new decade. May I take this opportunity to thank our fans, committee and players for their efforts over the past year and may everyone have a prosperous new one. Our last game of the decade was one of the biggest as we inflicted a fourth defeat in a row in the league against our derby rivals. We done what we have achieved so often at home this season where we outbattled and outplayed Whitley for long spells but won the game quite late. It’s a great habit we have and it shows the belief that the players possess currently. In fact we have fallen behind in all of our last 5 games but have managed still to take 10 points from losing positions. I was delighted to see our youngsters play so well in their first full appearances in a derby and in front of a big crowd. Young Cameron and Paul Van acquitted themselves superbly for such an occasion and obviously the latter delivered the killer blow showing fantastic determination to attack Cass’ set piece. I was delighted with our subs who impacted the game with their quality and it was great that Callum Smith is off the mark with his goal. That’s now just one defeat in 16 games and we are hopeful the excellent form can continue into the new year and that we can keep challenging the top 3 for as long as possible as well as the league and senior cups, which we will be going all out for. Todays opponents are on the back of their very own impressive derby victory so will be full of confidence. We lost at their place first game of the season in somewhat controversial circumstances, after playing very well first half. After being denied a penalty we took the lead early in the second only for the referee to turn the game by awarding a soft penalty to RCA, who carried the momentum and went on to win 2-1. Having given at least 6 debuts that day we have come a very long way and made loads of progress so we are looking forward to seeing how we compare today. Enjoy the game,

WHITLEY BAY
DIVISION ONE ROUND UP Who is there to stop Stockton Town in their quest to win the 2019/20 Northern League Division One title? That is a question many are asking but nobody can give an answer to. When North Shields held the Anchors to a point a fortnight or so ago, the likes of Hebburn Town, Shildon AFC and Consett were hoping this would be the beginning of a blip. However, a 4-0 win against Whickham and a 1-0 win at home to Thornaby (in front of almost one thousand people) have further solidified the Anchors as league favourites. Speaking of North Shields, the Robins’ have bounced back well from their 3-0 loss to promotion rivals Shildon. Successive 3-1 wins against Thornaby and Whitley Bay have pushed the club up to fourth in the league, five points behind Shildon but with a game in hand. The next two games against Sunderland RCA and Newcastle Benfield are crucial if the club want to be considered serious promotion candidates. One issue they will have to overcome is keeping a clean sheet, something they haven't done since the 3-0 win against Bishop Auckland on October 5th. Could we have witnessed another chink in the armour of Consett AFC? The imperious Steelmen seemed to be on a warpath since their inconsistent start to the season. However, with the likes of Dale Pearson in scintillating form, they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to mid-table Newcastle Benfield. What was really the most damaging aspect of that result was that they have now lost their game in hand over fourth place North Shields, leaving the club in fifth. An away game against Northallerton Town, before their FA Vase game against Lutterworth Town, represents a chance to get back on track. Ashington are finding thing tough this season, currently occupying 15th place in the Division One table. What is making those Ashington fans a little nervous is that they are only seven points ahead of bottom of the league Northallerton Town; albeit with a game in hand. Having not won in the league since early October, the club were boosted by a 2-0 win over lowly Whickham. The problem now is that they are scheduled to face Hebburn Town, Sunderland RCA and Bishop Auckland in the coming weeks. Will be a big challenge for the club to pick up valuable points. A season of disappointment for Whickham has recently been headlined by the resignation of club chairman Paul Taylor. The last result that Mr Taylor will have witnessed was that underwhelming defeat to fellow strugglers Ashington plus with the recent departure of Carl Finnigan, there are a lot of questions about whether Whickham can avoid the drop. The Lang Jacks are only two points above bottom side Northallerton Town but with the recent addition of Ben Harmison, on loan from Morpeth Town, they have the target man striker to help lead them to safety. Only time will tell if this signing is too little too late.
Updated on
DIVISION TWO ROUND UP With Stockton Town doing as well as they are at the top of Division One, West Allotment Celtic are doing even better at the top of Division Two. After yet another resounding victory, this time at the hands of lowly Brandon United, West Allotment are a whopping nine points clear at the top of the league whilst also maintaining a one game advantage over second placed Redcar Athletic. Still with only one loss in the league and still with three of the top Division Two scorers in their team, it seems that Division Champions elect will be returning to Division One next season.
Crook Town just seem to keep on impressing and after four wins and one draw from their last five fixtures, they occupy fourth place in the Division Two table. If truth be told, they would be sitting third had they not conceded two goals in two minutes during their 2-2 draw against Carlisle City. Crook are still well in touch with third placed Ryton & Crawcrook Albion and if they manage to win their next game against Sunderland West End by more than three goals, they would take that third spot. With Daniel Kent leading the line, it is a possibility. At the start of December, after a 3-1 defeat away to Crook Town, Jarrow seemed destined to a mid-table finish. However, an impressive run of form, with victories against Birtley Town, Tow Law Town and most recently against Chester-le-Street Town, they now find themselves sitting in seventh. More importantly, they now only sit eight points off of third place and with several months left in the season, there is still every chance that Jarrow can sneak into a promotion spot come the end of the 2019/20 campaign. Inconsistency has really cost Willington this season, with any promotion hopes surely falling by the wayside this year. Having struggled early on, many thought the club had finally discovered some important form, after impressive wins against promotion hunting Ryton and Redcar Athletic. However, those results were soon followed by a loss to Birtley Town. Willington were able to bounce back again with a win against Bedlington Terriers, however, their last five games perfectly depicts what kind of a season they are having. Lowly Durham City just can drag themselves away from what many assume will be an inevitable relegation. Two seasons ago, the Citizens were an outside bet for promotion, back when Ryhope CW midfielder Ollie Hotchkiss was the manager. Nowadays, they have really found the going tough, with only Brandon United below them in the league. Somehow, with Washington being dragged into a relegation battle, Durham City still have a chance of survival and after their 1-1 draw against the team just above them in the table, supporters are wondering if the club has what it takes to make a great escape.

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY
The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League. They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900– 01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900. After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance. They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic. The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958. North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933–34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3–0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0. A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951–52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956– 57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign. North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runners-up and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas). The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local shipyard worker. (North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was shortlived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium. Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United. The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. This campaign in which Wembley skipper Kevin Hughes made his 300th appearance the side enjoyed a promising mid-season run of results which saw them put pressure on the top three.

North Shields come from a goal down to beat near-rivals Whitley Bay 3-1 in the first El Coastico derby of the season. Whitley Bay got the game underway, with North Shields shooting towards the Conifer end of the ground. It was North Shields who started the brightest, with Paul Robinson having an effort from outside the area, only for Whitley goalkeeper Daniel Lister to save with ease. It was North Shields who had another shot at goal, with Scott McCarthy doing well with a run down the channel and having a shot saved by the ‘keeper. North Shields continued to add pressure at the Whitley goal, however, Kyle Patton and Scott McCarthy both saw an effort saved and go wide of the goal. Whitley Bay managed to deal with this pressure and were soon rewarded with a penalty by referee Alex Clark, after Greg Purvis brought down Michael Colquhoun.
Shepherd took the penalty and sent the Shields keeper the wrong way to give the Seahorses the lead on the 15th minute. Being a goal down spurred the home side on, with a cross not being dealt with by the Whitley defence, with the poor clearance falling to Scott McCarthy on the 21st minute, leaving the striker to bundle the ball home.
and looked to use their pace up front to get in behind the North Shields defence on a heavy pitch that was making passing football difficult. The visitors had a strong claim for a penalty denied on 58th Minute, after Marcus Giles was clearly brought down in the area after checking his run, only for the referee to wave the appeals away. Whitley Bay again continued to pressure the North Shields goal with Greg Purvis again pulling off an excellent save.
With the game level, Marc Nash and the management team began to make changes with Callum Patton replacing Paul Robinson. This added a bit of energy to the team as Paul Van-Zandvliet had a chance to take the lead with a header being cleared off the line. Only moments later the young midfielder Paul Van-Zandvliet rose up above the defence and powered a header into the back of the net with the North Shields lad giving the home side the lead in this encounter. After a stoppage in play due to an injury to Greg Purvis a substitution was made with Callum Smith replacing Scott McCarthy. The game was then put to bed after a bad error from ex-North Shields goalkeeper Lister; misjudging a header outside of the box.
Whitley began to grow into the game, and on 30th minute, Colquhoun took advantage of another defensive slip to find himself one on one with the keeper.
The ball rolled towards the goal, with the Whitley Bay defence and goalkeeper watching on as substitute Smith finished from a tight angle for his first goal for the club.
Thankfully, Purvis saved well low down with Marcus Giles putting the rebound high and wide.
Salt was then added to the wound as referee Alex Clark gave James Martin his marching orders after a second bookable offence. Marc Nash then brought Jamie Clark for the final few moments as he replaced Cameron Cunningham.
The Robins had the chance to go ahead as on the 40th minute, with Cam Cunningham setting up a chance for Kyle Patton, but this brought a good save from Lister, ensuring that the teams went in level at half time. Whitley Bay started the second half brightly,
The referee then bringing the game to an end, with North Shields running out 3-1 winners against close rivals Whitley Bay.
CONNOR CAMPBELL Having initially signed for the Robins at the start of the 2018/19 season, Connor soon made the move to Division Two side Heaton Stannington, in search of first team football. It was whilst at Grounsell Park that the young striker excelled, scoring thirty goals as the Stan narrowly missed out on promotion to Division One. When the opportunity arose to bring Connor back to the Daren Persson Stadium, Nashy jumped at the chance. Ed Painter spoke to Connor about his season so far and coming up against some familiar faces. The Robins’ unbeaten run came to an end with a 3-0 defeat to Shildon. What are your thoughts on the game and how important it is to bounce back from that game straight away? “The game was really hard in tough conditions, especially as the wind and rain picked up in the second half in our direction of play. It’s pivotal that we bounce back instantly and it goes down as just a ‘blip’ if we want to go on another run and challenge at the very top of the league.” Despite that result, there is still a legitimate chance of promotion this season. How much is this spoken about amongst the players? “Believe it or not, we try to avoid the talk of promotion and where we will finish, we try to focus on the upcoming game only and try to get the win.” Last season saw you lead the line for Heaton Stannington in Division Two. What would you say, as a striker, are the major differences between Division One and Two? “The major difference for me is the intensity and tempo of the games. There isn’t a single game in division one where you can ‘coast’ through a game as a striker, whereas I felt there were some cases in division two where you found yourself doing that.”
So when you saw the Robins get drawn against Heaton Stannington in the League Cup Group Stage, what were you thinking? “I just knew it was going to happen before the draw even started! It was always going to happen wasn’t it haha “ Since you made your debut for the club at the beginning of last season, how do you think you have improved as a player? “When I made my debut last season, it was my first real go in division one of the northern league and I was thrown right in with injuries etc. After going to Heaton Stan and scoring a hatful of goals, I feel like I have grown massively in confidence, as well as my link-up play with the rest of the team.”
The team we face today were one of those sides who caused us trouble early on, beating us on the opening day. Is there any revenge on the mind of the players? “Revenge should never be on the mind of players because it allows emotion to get in the way of what we do best, try to outplay the opposition.” “All we need to do is focus on our game and play the way we do and we’re always confident of securing the win.” Given the support the team has received, home and away, this season, do you feel they have an important role to play for the rest of the season?
After a really tough first month for the club, things seem to have greatly improved on the pitch. What do you personally think the reason for this is?
“The fans and volunteers are the biggest part of the club for me. Players never like to admit it but there’s always that little bit more grit at home when you have the amazing backing of the fans every week.”
“The team mentality is like nothing I’ve experienced before! When we get beat or draw, the team are instantly itching to put it right the next week and when we win the feeling amongst the players is amazing. Everyone gets along with each other and the camaraderie amongst us is brilliant.
“As well as that, seeing how many of our fans show up at away games, even those that are long distances away , makes us players want to push that little bit more to get the result we all want.”

Two first-half goals from Callum Johnston saw the Robins come out on top against Sunderland RCA in a closely fought contest. Shields took the lead in the tenth minute when Johnston raced onto a perfectly weighted through ball before beating the keeper at his near post . The former Gateshead striker doubled the lead just before the break when he beat the offside trap before finishing past the onrushing keeper. The visitors got back into the game shortly after the restart when Mark Davidson converted from close range. However, some dogged Shields defending ensured the hosts a well-deserved victory. The first chance of the game came in the fourth minute when Curtis Coppen headed narrowly over at the back post, following a deep swinging corner. Three minutes later and the visitors came within inches of taking the lead only for Greg Purvis to deny RCA with a fantastic save before the ball was ultimately cleared. However, the hosts deservedly took the lead when an astounding cross from Paul Robinson released Johnston through on goal; leaving the youngster to slot it past Dimitrios Tsapalos in the tenth minute. Not wanting to let the Robins run wild with the game, RCA upped the tempo and in the 18th minute, a volley from the edge of the box by Colin Larkin flew over the crossbar. As the rain started to come down, both teams struggled to create many clear cut opportunities. However, in the 35th minute, the visitors came within inches once again of scoring but another brilliant save from Greg Purvis kept the Shields lead intact. Having survived the RCA pressure, the Robins began to press and with seconds left in the first half, they were able to double their advantage when a clever pass from Gary Ormston released Johnston through on goal once again. Just like the first time, he made no mistake in
beating the on-loan RCA keeper.
Whatever Martin Swailes had said to his RCA side at the break must have done the trick as only shortly after the restart, a scramble in the Robins box gave Mark Davison a easy shot which he converted past Purvis. Despite this setback, the Robins still came flooding forwards and after an excellent Bobby Taylor run and pass in the 58th minute, Johnston was once again given the freedom of the box to have a shot. Unfortunately, Tsapalos, who is on loan from Morpeth Town, spread himself well to block the shot. The combination of Taylor and Johnston was causing the RCA defence no end of trouble and in the 60th minute, Taylor’s shot from the angle was hooked across the face of goal. Johnston who was at the back post, collected the ball before trying his luck from close range, however, Tsapalos made a great recovering save to deny the Robins a third goal.
This save seemed to spur the visitors on but if Tsapalos was having a decent game, Purvis was having an outstanding one as his excellent double save in the 63rd minute helped to frustrate the RCA forwards even more. With time running out the visitors turned the screw once again and in the 73rd minute, a shot at the back post from a RCA attacker flew narrowly over the crossbar. With only nine minutes left in the game, Thomas McAloon should have done better with his effort but he seemed to snatch at the ball giving Purvis the simple task of parrying the ball to safety. The Robins could have put the game to bed in added time when Taylor once again caused havoc amongst the tiring RCA defence, however, Tsapalos was on hand once again to give his side the slimmest of hopes. Thankfully for the Robins, they were able to hold on to a victory which lifts them to fourth place in the Division One table.

CLUB HISTORY Sunderland RCA FC started life as Ryhope Youth Club. Its first season was in the Seaham and District League in 1963. The first game was against Seaham UDC at the Seaham CW ground, now home to Seaham Red Star, and it was a 3 - 3 draw. The first seeds had been sown three years earlier, in 1960, when the Ryhope Youth Club Centre opened in the Welfare Hall. In 1965 the club moved to the Colliery Welfare ground and in 1971 changed its name to Ryhope Community Association. Competing in the Seaham, then Houghton and District Leagues, the club enjoyed success with eight cup wins and four league titles. Rejected by the Wearside League because a Ryhope team already played in it, the club folded after the 1975-76 season. Re-formed three years later, the club joined the Northern Alliance in 1978 and won the League Challenge Cup at St James Park in Newcastle, in only their third season. Ryhope CA were also league runners up that year, even though they were reduced to playing on a school field. After some persuasion, the ambitious club convinced the council to lease then some derelict land Meadow Park was underway. Financial help was obtained from Sunderland and Tyne and Wear Councils and the Sports Council to build a football ground. The club members and community joined together to carry out the building work, resulting in the enclosed ground where football games are played and enjoyed today.
In 1982 the club was a founder member of the Northern League Second Division, achieving promotion as runner up in the 1983-84 season. Despite a league placing of tenth the next season, survival proved difficult and the club was relegated in 1988. In 1999 a new era commenced with the amalgamation with Kennek Roker of the Wearside League to form Kennek Ryhope Community Association. The seasons from 2003 onwards were tough, but for the season 2006-07, the club joined forces with Springboard Sunderland and a new era as Sunderland RCA FC began. Progress continues to be made both on and off the pitch and after finishing fourth in the previous two seasons Sunderland RCA FC were promoted as runners-up to Stokesley FC in season 2009-10 - a great achievement. Our first season back in Division 1 started badly, but we picked ourselves up, had a purple patch and finished the season in 13th place.
Progress continued in the following season when we achieved our highest finish in the league (4th) under the management of Neil Hixon. The following season saw us almost relegated and we only retained first division status after a vote at the AGM went in our favour. The introduction of Martin Swales as manager brought a renewed belief to the club and the 2015 - 16 season saw a great FA Vase run where we reached the 5th round proper before being beaten by Bristol Manor Farm. This was followed by a similar run in the 2016-17 season, exiting in the 5th round against Newport Pagnell. In the 2017-18 season the club equalled its highest Northern League placing, finishing fourth after a sensational late season surge, when the side played highly entertaining and incisive attacking football.

Strong and powerful, he has great touch and control on the ball and possesses a terrific shot which will see him produce his fair share of goal scoring opportunities.
Michael is another player who is starting his sixth season at the club. He is well liked by the fans because he makes things happen. He is a fast, tricky winger who likes to run at defenders. Very direct in his play, he also possesses the ability to cross the ball at pace into the danger area. 100% energy and commitment enables him to help out in defence as well.
Aaron Croft (MF)
Clayton Davis (MF)
Craig Hennis (MF)
Mark Davison (ST)
Aaron is currently working as a coach at Middlesbrough Foundation having previously held the same position at Sunderland AFC. He is a pacy midfielder who can play on the either side or down the middle. Has been known to post the odd video on YouTube of himself doing football tricks. Previous clubs are Washington, Seaham Red Star and Easington.
Clayton is also starting his sixth season at the club. He is a dynamic, speedy winger / defender who loves to take on defenders. Clayton is also a great crosser of the ball and chips in with the odd goal. He is one of those players who always has a smile on his face and is great to have around. Previous clubs include Washington, & Ryhope CW.
Craig joins us from Washington FC after impressing during our recent Durham Challenge cup match. He is a versatile central midfielder who works tirelessly for the team. A tenacious tackler with good distribution skills he also possesses a good engine which allows him to work box to box. He is an excellent addition top the team.
Mark Davison needs no introduction for Northern League football fans. A strong and direct centre forward who can be relied upon to score with head and feet as well as setting up opportunities for others, Sparky is returning for his third spell with RCA. We are delighted to have him back.
Connor Slack (ST)
Nathan O’Neill (ST)
Connor is the second Work Experience player to sign from Sunderland AFC. An out and out old fashioned style Centre forward who likes to put himself about. Is good in the air and can play with either foot a defenders nightmare. Injury free he will be a great asset to RCA.
This is Nathan’s fourth season at RCA, having signed from neighbours Ryhope Colliery Welfare. Tall and dominating in the air, Nathan is capable of scoring all kinds of goals, from two yard tapins, and headers to 25 yard screamers. He has also proved his effectiveness in a central midfield role when needed.
MANAGEMENT TEAM Martin Swales (M)
Mark Cowan (ASM)
Steve Riley (C)
James Lenny (C)
Sunderland RCA’s manager Martin has a wealth of Northern League experience both as a player and as a manager. He managed the very successful Ryhope Colliery Welfare team who in Season 2010 -11 won all four competitions in the Wearside League. Repeating the feat the following year and also clinching promotion for RCW to the Northern League Division 2. He has also managed Bishop Auckland for a short time.
Mark has been a big supporter of RCA off the field and has now jumped over the fence to join the football management. After a bad knee injury put pay to his footballing career as a youngster, Mark, from Birtley, ran teams in the Gateshead and District Sunday League. Mark brings commitment, energy, enthusiasm and management experience to the organisation of the team.
Steve joins the club as Assistant Manager / Coach he is a well established Coach / Manager who spent a number of years at Bishop Auckland where he was made Manager in 2015 guiding them to 8th position in the 2016-17 season.
Lenny, who has joined RCA as a goalkeeping coach, played Northern League football for most his career and worked with Martin Swales as a coach at Ryhope CW and Bishop Auckland. With considerable Northern League experience at Hartlepool Town, Chester-le-Street, Esh Winning, Washington and Ryton, he’s a great addition to our team.

LOCKER ROOM LO-DOWN Featuring Paul Robinson Q. Name the one player you'd want to fight off a zombie apocalypse with? A.
Bucks and Paul New. Hard as owt.
Q. What football stadium in the world have you always wanted to visit? A.
Real Madrid, Bernabeu. Always had a thing for Real Madrid and their beautiful white adidas kits!
Q. Name one player you wouldn't want to carpool with to an away game! A. Woody!
Q. Which player in the squad is never on time? A. Adam Foster. Captain as well. Not angry, just disappointed in him. Q. Who in the squad has the worst taste in music? A. Jordan had some mad weird shouty music on the other day. Awful.
Q. Pick three teammates you'd want in your pub quiz team? A. Ormston for DIY questions, Bucks for General Knowledge, me for Sport and Swinny for the principles of play. Q. Best sense of humour? A. Denver makes me laugh every time I see him. Not sure why. Just a funny (looking) lad. Q. Who is most likely to throw their dummy out of the pram if things aren’t going their own way? A. Possibly me to be honest. Referees seem to be testing my patience the past few seasons. Q. Which player is in most need of a new wardrobe? A. Jordan. Absolutely horrendous. Shorts, long t shirts, baggy jumpers from a charity shop, nose ring and Crystal Palace socks. Madness.
