CHAIRMAN’S CORNER Hopefully we are welcoming the officials, players and supporters of Thornaby FC to the Daren Persson Stadium this afternoon. We trust they enjoy their short stay here in North Shields before the trip home down the A19. Our visitors have put a fantastic amount of work into their ground over the past few seasons and thoroughly deserve their place in the first division. Last week as we know the weather intervened and our game against Stockton was called off because the pitch was totally waterlogged. I suppose it's a sign of the times, but it's still very disappointing as we had been on a great run and it doesn't help matters at all.
Our last game at Northallerton was also played on a very heavy pitch and it took a last gasp winner from Kyle Patton to secure all three points. I'm glad to be able to report that Gareth Bainbridge finally appears to be on the mend thanks to some expert help and advice from Newcastle United. The same person helped Dean Holmes get fit for the Vase final at Wembley. Tonight we are hosting a race night in the clubhouse. Entry is free so we hope there is a bumper attendance where everyone has the opportunity to meet the players.
Last Monday we had a visit from COPA90. They are an on line production company and were making a film about the club's 1969 FA Amateur Cup win. Team captain Ron Tatum was present ably assisted with stories of the day from Mike Taylor and supporters rep. Terry Reed. The finished product should be available on the net by next week. Just search on COPA90 website. Back to today and here's hoping the players can show the same grit and determination as they did down in North Yorkshire two weeks ago. As usual enjoy the game. Up the Robins.
Alan Matthews
A massive thankyou to Terry, Paul & Anthony Reed, John Lillford, Tony Fell and Bob Foster who are today’s match sponsors. If you are interested in sponsoring of the Robins’ remaining home games this season, please get in touch with the club.
MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good afternoon as we welcome Thornaby for todays NL division one match. I hope that today’s visitors have a safe journey home after the game. It has to be said that Thornaby have been on something of a good run of form. After defeat the loss to Longridge Town in the FA Vase, Thornaby have remained unbeaten and now sit in 15th place in the league. They also have some real quality in their team, such as Adam Preston who really has taken to Division One football after his move from Redcar Athletic. To come away from this game with all three points will come down to the team not taking our opposition for granted because if we do that, we aren’t going to have a very good day at all.. It also has to be said that despite a bit of adversity, losing to Stockton Town in the manner that we did nearly two months ago. The players have reacted brilliantly, winning eight and drawing two. Impressively, we have only scored less than three goals in two of those games against Billingham Town (0-0) and Heaton Stannington (2-2). Goals are being spread around which is always a good thing and we’ve also developed a canny knack of scoring important late goals which is a sign of our belief. Today we will put our excellent run to the test and hopefully we can get something against a very strong side and it helps us stay in the mix at the top. Enjoy the game,

DIVISION ONE ROUND UP Consett were the biggest benefactors of leaders Hebburn Town, plus a number of others, not playing last weekend. A one-sided victory over Bishop Auckland, with goals coming from Calvin Smith, Ali Alshabeeb and Dale Pearson, saw the Steelmen climb up to second place in the Division One table; only seven points off the Hornets but having played one more game. However, having also played several games more than the teams below them, one eye must be kept on the likes of Newton Aycliffe, Stockton Town and North Shields. With so many games in hand on their promotion rivals, it was no surprise to see the Anchors pick up some valuable wins. A 3-0 home win over West Auckland Town was followed by a 2-0 away win against mid-table Newcastle Benfield. They have also strengthened their ranks by adding Nathan Steel, formerly of Shildon, with the striker scoring on his debut on Wednesday. With three games in hand, the Anchors are only two points off Consett in second and six points off Hebburn Town in first. A mouth-watering tie at home to Hebburn today could very well decide, even at this early stage, who is the favourite to win the Division One title. At the start of the season, after their heavy handed defeat against Stockton Town, Billingham Town looked unstoppable and once they had their hands on a lead, they weren’t about to let it go any time soon. However, their recent form has shown that this side does indeed have a chink in its armour. Two wins, two losses and once draw (last weekends against West Auckland) have led some to believe that the newly promoted side have peaked too soon. With the kind of quality they still have in their side, after a few departures, any side that underestimates them will get punished. A fast start to the season resulted in Newcastle Benfield potentially threatening a promotion chasing campaign. However, in recent weeks, their results have begun to tail off. After a 4-2 defeat to North Shields in the middle of October, they did respond by beating Thornaby and Guisborough but after three successive postponements, they were on the end of a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Stockton Town. Whilst some may not have expected the Lions to win this game, it does mean they lose one of their games in hand on the promotion pack above. A win against Sunderland RCA is a must! Thornaby have really been on something of an upwards curve in recent weeks, no doubt in some way related to the signing of Adam Preston from Division Two side Redcar Athletic. Their last three games resulted in two wins and one draw (their most recent games being their 2-1 victory over fellow Division One newcomers Northallerton Town. Their recent good form has seen them move up to 15th place, having played several games less than the teams below. The Blues are the next team to visit the Daren Persson Stadium and if the bad weather stays away, we are sure to have a really good game.
Updated on
DIVISION TWO ROUND UP Still on top of the Division Two table are West Allotment Celtic, whose 2-1 win over Chester-le-Street saw them overtake Redcar Athletic. They still look good for a spot in Division One next season and with three of the top five goal scorers in Division Two this season donning the green & white hoops (Shane Jones, Matthew Hayton and Abubaker Salim), a title challenge is a certainty. They are also going great guns in the league cup, having defeated Bedlington Terriers 7-2 Wednesday night. This result was the third time this season that West have scored seven or more goals in a game!
Hot on West Allotment’s tails are Redcar Athletic who are on course to have a truly special season, having only just been promoted back into Northern League at the beginning of the last campaign. Losing the likes of Adam Preston to Thornaby was never going to help their efforts but signings like Kallum Hannah and Ashley Lavan have further strengthened their team. Having said that, a defeat to Heaton Stannington and a draw against Carlisle City have let the chasing pack catch up a little bit. With four games in hand on Redcar, Ryton & Crawcrook Albion are looking at cementing their surprise promotion hopes. A defeat to Carlisle City and three cancelled games in a row have halted their season some what, however, a fantastic 4 -3 win over Heaton Stannington in the E Armstrong Cup will have no doubt lifted the teams’ spirits. They will hope the weather behaves itself today as a game against second placed Redcar Athletic is on the cards, with a win closing that points gap to only six. What a fantastic job manager Tony Fawcett has done at that club. Sunderland West End have not found it as easy in a new division and currently sit in 13th place. The weather has also been their worst enemy as three of their most recent fixtures have been postponed, Chester-le-Street Town are a side many thought would be challenging at the right end of the table. However, they have struggled for form and find themselves in the bottom half. After a bright start to the season, Bedlington Terriers have gravitated back towards the lower end of the league. Pitch issues have once again plagued the side. Despite what seemed to be an improvement in performances from Durham City, the team were second best across the pitch as they lost 5-0 to Willington in the E Armstrong Cup on Wednesday. Having been reprieved last season following the last placed finish, the ambition will have been to avoid the same result once again. They may not be in last (Brandon United) but they are second bottom and have yet to hit double figures in points this season. A tricky trip to Carlisle City awaits the Citizens, followed by a home tie against Ryton & Crawcrook, so any points they can possibly gain from these two games would be seen as a bonus. They also face Brandon United on the 21st December. A potential relegation decider?

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY
The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League. They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900– 01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900. After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance. They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic. The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958. North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933–34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3–0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0. A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951–52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956– 57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign. North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runners-up and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas). The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local shipyard worker. (North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was shortlived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium. Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United. The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. This campaign in which Wembley skipper Kevin Hughes made his 300th appearance the side enjoyed a promising mid-season run of results which saw them put pressure on the top three.

Two goals from Cam Cunningham helped the Robins to a dominant 4-1 win against Guisborough Town at a muddy KGV Ground. Cunningham opened the scoring with a fine strike early in the first half, before Paul New’s header gave the Robins a 2-0 lead at the break. A Mark Robinson penalty at the start of the second half gave Guisborough a fighting chance.
The Robins doubled their lead three minutes later when a Cassidy corner met the head of Paul New, who ghosted in at the far post the nod the ball into the back of the net. With five minutes before the break, the hosts almost pulled a goal back through Brooklyn Miller, only for debutant Robins keeper Bradley Skirpan to make a smart save at his near post.
However, Kyle Patton’s strike, after the Guisborough midfielder Joe Ferguson was sent off, restored the Robins’ two-goal cushion.
Guisborough came out firing in the second half and after only six minutes, the referee awarded them a spot kick when he judged New to have brought down substitute Daniel Earl.
And in added time, Cunningham weaved through the home defence to finish low and put the game beyond doubt.
After a short delay, Robinson made no mistake in sending Skirpan the wrong way to give Guisborough a way back into the game.
Shields started on the front foot and in the third minute, a Nick Cassidy freekick from just outside the area whistled over the Guisborough crossbar.
Having weathered the early storm, the Robins began to press forwards once more and in the 62nd minute, a Cunningham header, from a Cassidy freekick, forced Catterick into a save.
Three minutes later, a spectacular save from Ryan Catterick denied Cunningham after the young midfielder’s volley looked destined for the back of the net. Guisborough were struggling to get a foot hold in the game and had to wait until the 10th minute for a chance on goal, with Mason McNeill’s effort sailing high over the crossbar. In the 20th minute, Patton had a glorious chance to give the Robins the lead when he broke through on goal, however, after rounding Matthew Crust, his effort was cleared off the line by Guisborough captain Robinson. One minute later, a mistake from Catterick gifted Rhys Williams the ball on the edge of the six-yard box. Luckily for Guisborough, the young keeper recovered well to block Williams’ effort from point blank range. However, after a botched clearance, Gary Ormston was given time to cross the ball to Cunningham, who smashed the ball into the back of the net on the volley. As the game entered the 36th minute, the Robins thought they should have had a penalty when Scott McCarthy was brought down in the penalty area. However, referee Craig Dean wasn’t interested and waived their claims away.
Four minutes after that, substitute Paul VanZandvliet almost converted a low cross from McCarthy, only for the Guisborough captain to make a last-ditch challenge to prevent Shields from adding a third.
The hosts chances of getting back into the game were dealt a blow in the 72nd minute when Joe Ferguson was shown a second yellow card for a late lunge; much to the dismay of the Guisborough bench. And in the 81st minute, the Robins made good use of their advantage. After McCarthy dispossessed Miller in the centre of the pitch, he released Cunningham through on goal before the winger unselfishly set up Patton, who finished calmly into an open net. Whilst Guisborough were licking their wounds, the prolific Robins struck again in the 91st minute, with Cunningham deservedly grabbing his second of the game and the visitors fourth. A clever through ball from Adam Forster found Cunningham in acres of space on the edge of the box, with the youngster weaving his way past three defenders before thumping the ball past Catterick. This result lifts North Shields to third in the Ebac Northern League Division One table, whilst Guisborough Town now sit in 11th place.
ADAM FORSTER We speak to Fozzy about replacing Kev Hughes as captain and the Robins’ good season so far. At the start of this season, fan-favourite Adam Forster was given some very big shoes to fill. With long-time captain Kev Hughes retiring at the end of last season, Fozzy was given the honour of leading the team out. Media Officer Ed Painter spoke to the Shields captain about the start of his season and how he thinks we shape up against the rest of the league. After Kev Hughes retired at the end of last season, you were chosen by Nashy to be the next North Shields captain. How much did it mean to you to be given that responsibility? “Yeah it was massive for me personally. After being at the club back when we were in Division 2 to the recent years it was great to be given the captaincy and I can only thank the management team for that. We've got a great group of lads at the club which makes being captain an easy job.” On a personal level, your start to the season has been interrupted by a couple of niggling injuries which have cost you game time. How frustrating has that been to you? “Its massively frustrating. Not a lot of people see the work you put in away from match days to try and stay fit and when you get the same niggling injuries it chips away at you. But when you get a run of games and the team is winning there's no better feeling. Fingers crossed for the rest of the season.” Away from football, it’s well known that you’re a part of the fire service. How challenging has it been to juggle those responsibilities with your Shields commitments? “The management team have been first class with the work situation. I try my best to put holidays in or switch my shifts around so I can make as many games as possible during
the season. The lads and lasses at Consett fire station are top quality as well if I ever need a shift switched on short notice due to games being rearranged. “
Before our good run of form, we were on the end of poor defeats to Hebburn and Stockton. What do you think helped pick the team up after those poor results?
At the time of writing this, the team has been on a great run of form and are currently on an eight-game unbeaten run. Does this go to show that Shields can stand toe to toe with anyone in this league?
“As a team we always knew the type of results we should be getting at this club. I think those results motivated us even more to prove to everyone that we should be challenging near the top of this league.”
“Yeah, I think with the squad we've got now and how were playing we can compete with anyone in this league. On our day we're unplayable at times. Even when results haven't went our way we as players and a management team knew what we were capable of and hopefully were showing everyone that now. We just need to keep working hard and keep picking up points.”
With the crowds on the rise this season, how important has the fans support been in helping Shields this season?
Alongside the more experienced members of the Shields squad, the likes of Paul VanZandvliet and Cam Cunningham have really burst onto the scene. How impressive have those two been this season? “Yeah for such young lads they've done brilliant. Not only on the pitch but in training and the dressing room they're two top lads. We've got a few younger lads and it’s great to see them improving in the northern league.”
“Getting the crowds in at Shields has been huge. It makes playing at home unbelievable. Away teams don't like it and its pushes us on. We as players can only thank all the fans that have been turning up and hopefully we can keep getting good results for them.” With the club still fighting in the League, the League Cup and the Senior Cup, does the prospect of silverware at the end of the season? “Yeah, at the start of the season we set targets to try and aim for. We need to take each game as it comes but we have to aim for silverware at this club and finish as high as possible in the league.” HOWAY THE ROBINS

A late Kyle Patton goal earned the Robins a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Northallerton Town to maintain their unbeaten run. The Robins took the lead early on with Adam Forster’s low effort before Scott McCarthy doubled the visitors lead with a close range header. However, a David Hillerby strike before half time kept Northallerton within touching distance. Callum Smith then brought the hosts level just after the restart. But with moments to spare before full time, Patton’s fine finish helped the Robins come away with all three points. The hosts started brightly and after only two minutes, a good block from Ben Christensen denied Northallerton an effort on goal. Two minutes later, the Robins had a chance of their own when Rhys Williams fired over from a freekick. Despite the ball taking a deflection, the referee awarded Northallerton a goal kick. Shields were starting to warm into the game and in the eighth minute, McCarthy found himself in acres of space after a run into the penalty area. However, he was unable to connect with the cross and the ball was cleared to safety. The Robins broke the deadlock in the 13th minute when captain Forster low shot from 20-yards out zipped past home keeper Andy Coulson and into the back of the net. Northallerton responded well and only three minutes later, a long-range effort flew just wide of the upright. However, two minutes later, Patton almost doubled the lead when, under heavy defensive pressure, he fired the ball over the crossbar. In the 28th minute, a cross from McCarthy, following a mazy run, presented Ryan Carr a chance on goal, only for the Shields midfielder to see his header comfortably saved by Coulson. Four minutes later and the Robins had their second of the day when Carr made up for his wasted chance moments earlier. Following a Nick Cassidy freekick, Carr knocked the ball down to McCarthy, with the attacker left with the simplest of finishes to double the lead.
It didn’t take long for the hosts to respond and in the 35th minute, after the Shields defence failed to clear a Northallerton corner, Hillerby was on hand to volley home. The Robins pressed forward in an effort to regain their two-goal lead, with Cam Cunningham and Carr both having excellent chances. However, it was Northallerton who came closest to scoring when a cross into the box from Connor Lowes was narrowly missed by Smith. The hosts were rewarded for their efforts and in the 55th minute, Smith went one better by converting a spot kick which was awarded for a foul on Ryan McKendry by Christensen. After letting their two-goal lead slip, Shields came out firing and in the 58th minute, a great cross from Cunningham found Patton in the box but home keeper Coulson flapped at his shot and managed to clear it to safety. Substitutions for both sides broke up what was becoming a very back and forth game but with the pitch cutting up badly, the Robins were struggling to get their passing game going. In the 78th minute, the Northallerton attack were really piling pressure on the Robins defence and if not for an excellent piece of skill from Paul Robinson, which sent three attackers flying, the Robins may have conceded once again. One minute later, Patton was once again at the heart of the Robins attack and after a powerful run forwards, his shot at goal was flew harmlessly over the crossbar. With the game coming to a close, the Northallerton support thought their side had managed to secure a point against the red-hot Robins. However, with only moments to spare, Gary Ormston picked out Patton with an exquisite ball. This allowed the attacker to streak through on goal and slot the ball under Coulson and into the back of the net; securing the Robins’ fifth straight win. As a result, the Robins now climb to second in the Northern League Division One table whilst Northallerton now occupy 16th place.

THORNABY CLUB HISTORY At the start of the 2000/2001 season, the Northern League gained a freshly-named club in its ranks in the guise of Thornaby - and one that has a bright future to look forward to and will be a force to be reckoned with in its native area of Teesside. The newly-named club had had a long and chequered career after originally starting life as Stockton Athletic in 1882. For 50 years it became one of the country's leading amateur sides, winning many Northern League honours during this time. After this successful period, thirty more years elapsed with membership held in various other leagues before a decline in fortunes, mainly due to financial problems, saw the club disband in 1975, and the historic Victoria Ground sold off for building land. Eventually, in 1980, the long journey back began and the re-formed Stockton joined the Wearside League for the 1980/81 season, eventually regaining Northern League status at the 1985 AGM, reverting to Thornaby-on-Tees FC for 1999/2000 and a year later to Thornaby FC. The birth of Thornaby as a new team was based on very sound practical reasons. There was a definite need to identify with the local community in a more effective way, and that much-needed support could be generated with local businesses being actively involved. The eventual aim for Thornaby is to challenge the 'giants' of the Northern League, many of whom are hugely respected throughout the non-League scene. As well as the Northern League team, they have an under 23s and an over 35s team with a connection to over 6 junior teams aged from under 7. Since reformation in 1980, major honours include winning the Stockton & Dist: 1980-81Wearside: 198185 – Sunderland Shipowners Cup R-Up 1982-83- North Riding Senior Cup 1985-8: Northern League Second Division championship in 1987-88, 91-92 and the Craven Cup in 1995. For any club to be successful the infrastructure has to be in place, and Thornaby's hard working committee fit that bill and have nearly completed the New club House with a new roof added last season and the committee are working hard to have a new cafe and hospitality open soon.
