CHAIRMAN’S CORNER Tonight we welcome the officials, players and supporters, of West Allotment Celtic to The Daren Persson Stadium for this Northumberland Senior Cup QF Cup tie. We trust they enjoy their short stay here before the journey home. Well it's that time of the year again. It only seems like a few weeks since we faced each other at our visitors Druid Park, where we won, and got through to the final at St James’ Park. Those that were there will know what a struggle we had to beat Allotment that night. Knowing how tough that game was, I expect an even closer game tonight. Allotment sit clear at the top of the second division and it seems only a matter of time before their promotion back to Division One is confirmed. Following our second half horror show against Ryhope C.W. and gifting them the points, we bounced back away at Benfield and gained a deserved three points to keep us in the running amongst the top clubs for honours at the end of the season. Again, I have to mention our great support where, yet again, we outnumbered the home fans easily by at least two to one. I thought the returning Adam Forster was outstanding and what a volley he scored to give us the lead. The day was then topped off by leading scorer Kyle Patton, who notched that important late penalty.
Just a quick mention for our young lads Paul van Zandvliet who has a back strain, as well as Cam Cunningham, who has been suffering from mumps. Here's hoping they will both be back in action soon.
Back to tonight and for the first time I can remember, all four quarter final games are taking place tonight. Here's hoping it's our name that will be in the hat for the next round. Up the Robins.
Alan Matthews
MANAGER’S NOTEBOOK Good evening and welcome to everyone for this NFA Senior Cup Quarter Final where our Second Division opponents stand between us and another semi final which of course is where we met West Allotment Celtic in last season’s competition. I think it’s fair to say that we were heavy favourites last time but this time around, we are facing a side with a tremendous record in their league and are odds on to become Division Two champions. That has to be respected as we know they have been pretty much winning week after week. They have already beaten the likes of Ashington and Stockton Town in the Northern League Cup so it’ll be another big scalp for them to take. However, our form isn’t too bad either having suffered just two defeats in 17 games, stretching back to mid-September. Those defeats certainly hurt at the time but we have shown great character by bouncing back straight away and I have to say, I was delighted in the way we dispatched Benfield in our last outing, especially given the awful conditions with the wind. We have missed young Cam Cunningham through illness since Boxing Day but he is back training and we will assess his fitness levels at training before deciding his involvement tonight. Paul Van has also been struggling with another back problem but that positional issue has been eased somewhat with the welcome return of skipper Adam Forster and, of course, if you were at Benfield then you would have witnessed that rare sight of a Fozzy ‘worldie’.
Having reached the final at St James’ last year, the players and staff are very keen to go back and do one better this time so it starts tonight with this very difficult tie. Enjoy the game,
Marc Nash

HOME TEAMS The Robins’ have a very good overall record in the Northumberland Senior Cup, having won the cup in 2016 against Blyth Spartans. More recently, having progressed to another final appearance at St James’ Park, they came undone against Morpeth Town, with the Highwaymen scoring a late winning goal in extra time. A bye into the quarter final sees Shields line up against Division Two pace setters West Allotment Celtic, a repeat of last season’s semi final. No doubt the game will be as closely fought as last years tie.
Newcastle Benfield will be aiming to go one better this time around as last season, in a home game against North Shields, they lost in a penalty shootout, after Paul Robinson equalised for Shields in the dying moments. They were handed the toughest possible draw, with Newcastle United Under 23’s set to visit Sam Smith’s Park but with the home advantage, Benfield could be sensing the opportunity to upset the tournament favourites.
Last season, after hammering Alnwick Town 8-0 in the first round, Bedlington Terriers came within a whisker of making it to the semi-finals; losing 1-0 away at West Allotment Celtic. This time around, the Division Two outfit managed to surprise some by beating Division One side Ashington at Welfare Park. Their reward for that win is a potentially lucrative home game against National League North side Blyth Spartans and with Lee Clark’s men struggling against relegation, another shock may be on the cards.
Last season’s champions, having beaten North Shields 2-1 in the 2018/19 final, will be looking to retain their title when they play host to mid table Northern League Division One side Whitley Bay. The recent acquisition of striker Carl Finnigan, most recently of Whickham, has boosted the Northern Premier League side. Managed by Nick Gray and assisted by former North Shields manager Jon McDonald, anything less than a lengthy cup run this time around will simply not be good enough.

ND SENIOR CUP ROUND UP
AWAY TEAMS The Northern League Division Two champions elect will get the chance for revenge as they travel to the Daren Persson Stadium to face North Shields. Having come so close to making the Senior Cup Final last season, they will be eager to not only go one step further, but also to do so against the team that cost them a place at St James’ Park. Despite losing their first home game of the season against Redcar recently, West Allotment will prove to be a very difficult team to beat.
Having won the Northumberland Senior cup two seasons ago, Newcastle United U23’s were denied successive finals appearances when they lost 2-0 to Morpeth Town at Craik Park. With the likes of Matty Longstaff suiting up for the team last season, before his promotion to the senior team, it goes to show the kind of talent at the Magpies disposal. A trip to Newcastle Benfield will prove to be a challenge but one they will fancy overcoming.
A team with a very successful history in this competition, Blyth Spartans were somewhat humiliated in last year’s Quarter Final when they lost 7-2 to Newcastle United U23’s. Whilst they had made numerous changes to their starting line up, due to a promotion challenge, they will still be very disappointed with how they were beaten. They will also be very unlikely to make the same mistake again, with key players set to return to the starting line up. A reasonably local derby against Bedlington Terriers will suit them nicely.
Whitley Bay struggled to get going in last season’s Senior Cup, losing 4-3 in the first round to Division Two side Heaton Stannington. This time around, a comfortable 6-0 win at home to Newcastle University, who are newly promoted to Northern League, set the up with a juicy away game against Morpeth Town. A young side with plenty of talent, Nathan Haslam’s team will be keen to prove just what they can do against much bigger fishes. Will be a very big ask though to progress any further.

NORTHUMBERLAND SENIOR CUP The Northumberland Senior Cup, officially named the Techflow Marine Senior Cup, is an annual football competition held between the clubs of the Northumberland Football Association which was first played in 1884. It is the senior county cup for the historic county of Northumberland, which includes Newcastle upon Tyne and North Tyneside. The final is held at St. James' Park. The first winners were Tyne. NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY
The club was formed in 1896 as North Shields Athletic, playing initially in the South Shields and District League. They subsequently became members of the Northern Combination and were runners-up of this league in the 1900– 01 season. The club moved to the Appleby Park ground at Hawkey's Lane, North Shields around 1900. After eight seasons as a Northern Combination club, in 1904 North Shields Athletic joined the Northern Alliance. They soon were successful, winning the league for two successive seasons in 1906–07 and 1907–08. Following this the team were admitted to the North Eastern League and North Shields Athletic remained members until 1914–15 when competition was suspended owing to the First World War. At least two players, Alan Grenyer and Harry Chambers went on to play for the full England team after starting their careers with North Shields Athletic. The club became North Shields F.C at the start of the 1928–29 season and were immediately divisional champions and promoted back to Division 1 of the North Eastern League where they remained playing (except for a seven-year suspension of the league caused by the Second World War) until 1958. North Shields achieved their best to date performance in the FA Cup in reaching the second round proper in 1933–34 (this feat was not equalled for forty-nine years). In the first round Shields defeated Midland League Scarborough 3–0 at Appleby Park. They were drawn away in the next round to local rivals Football League Third Division North club Gateshead who won the tie, 1–0. A few years prior to the war-time cessation, in 1936 the club saw their record attendance at Appleby Park of 12,800 in a local derby match against South Shields. In 1944–45 following the post war resumption of the league Shields won the league cup. Shortly afterwards in 1949–50 the team won the North Eastern League championship, achieved a second-placed finish in 1951–52 and took the League Cup winners crown again five years later. That season, 1956– 57, was to be temporarily their penultimate as members of the North Eastern League as that league disbanded after the 1957–58 campaign. North Shields joined the Northern League from the 1964–65 campaign and shortly thereafter achieved success. A year after joining they were runners-up and three years later with former Scotland defender Frank Brennan as manager North Shields recorded a unique quadruple in 1968–69 of league winners, league cup winners, FA Amateur Cup winners and joint winners of the Anglo Italian Amateur Cup (after an aggregate draw over two legs against Italian Amateur cup winners Almas). The FA Amateur Cup was the highest ranked nationwide cup competition for amateur clubs and in the 1968–69 final North Shields beat Isthmian League club Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.[9] Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won 2–1 with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey, both laid on by substitute Tommy Orrick a local shipyard worker. (North Shields Athletic 1995–1999) Despite it being a couple of weeks after the start of competition North Shields were accepted into the Division 2 of the Wearside League - a drop of 5 levels down the football pyramid. Former player Dave Callaghan became the manager and put a new team together. The clubs stay at this level was shortlived, earning promotion - as 1992–93 division 2 runners-up - to division 1 of the Wearside league. Initially the club played at their Appleby Park ground but after a few months relocated to St John's Green, Percy Main and thence for a couple of years from 1993–94 on to Swallow Sports Ground, Wallsend. Thereafter the club relocated back to North Shields to the Ralph Gardner Park which has since been developed into a 1,500 capacity stadium. Success on a national level followed the next season when "the Robins" won the 2014–15 FA Vase beating champions of the North West Counties League, Glossop North End. The final took place at Wembley Stadium and similar to the North Shields Amateur Cup triumph 46 years previously they came from a goal down to win 2-1 (after extra time) with Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster scoring. Along the way, a new attendance record of 1,500 was established at the Shields' Ralph Gardner Park stadium at the semi-final second leg match against Highworth Town in which the Shields triumphed 2–0. They also finished 4th in the Northern League First Division and only five points behind champions Marske United. The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. This campaign in which Wembley skipper Kevin Hughes made his 300th appearance the side enjoyed a promising mid-season run of results which saw them put pressure on the top three.

The Robins returned to winning ways as goals from Adam Forster and Kyle Patton helped them secure a 2-0 away win over Newcastle Benfield. Benfield almost took the lead early on, when Paul Brayson’s curled effort struck the crossbar. But the Robins entered the break in front, following Forster’s spectacular volley.
to double their lead when McCarthy’s low cross was tipped away by Grainger. After collecting the rebound and rounding the keeper, Smith could only fire wide. With time running out in the first half, it seemed that the only team likely to add to the score were the Robins.
The hosts piled the pressure on in the second half in search of an equalising goal.
One minute after Smith’s miss, McCarthy bamboozled his marker before firing the ball across the goalmouth, narrowly missing a sliding Carr at the far post.
However, Patton’s late penalty, after he was brought down by the keeper, sealed all three points and the league double over Benfield.
The weather worsened at the start of the second period as both teams looked to make as quick a start as possible.
The hosts were looking to start brightly and after only a couple of minutes, Cyril Giraud saw his effort, from the edge of the box, cleared off the line by Chris McDonald.
Just as in the first half, Benfield got onto the front foot quickly and in the 50th minute, a deep swinging cross was deflected away at the far post by Paul New, before Lewis Scorgie could tap home.
After last weekend’s defeat to Sunderland RCA, Shields were keen to bounce back quickly. In the sixth minute, a deep cross from Patton was collected at the far post by Benfield keeper Andrew Grainger; with Scott McCarthy lurking. Windy conditions were making it difficult for both sides to control the ball, with McDonald’s long-range shot, in the 11th minute, swerving wide of the Benfield goal.
Only seconds after that, Greg Purvis pulled off a great reaction save to deny Giraud’s long range effort. The Lions were pushing hard and from the resulting corner, Mechack Kanda rose highest to connect with the ball, only for his effort to be directed the wrong side of the post.
Only one minute later, Benfield had a golden chance to take the lead, when the wind caused confusion in the Shields defence.
Having narrowly missed a golden opportunity in the first half, Brayson was gifted another chance in the 53rd minute when the Robins turned the ball over in defence.
Having collected the ball just outside the centre circle, Giraud played a smart ball through to Brayson, with the attacker cutting inside of his man on the edge of the box, before curling his effort against the top of the crossbar.
Somehow, with only Purvis to beat, Brayson’s effort sliced horribly wide when it would have been easier to hit the target.
With the hosts wondering how they hadn’t scored., Shields broke up the other end, only for Patton’s shot, from a McCarthy cross, to miss the target. In what was turning into a very end-to-end game, Benfield were the next to threaten in the 15th minute, when Giraud’s low cross was curled wide from close range by former robin Jack Cooper. Shortly afterwards, the Robins made the Lions pay when, in the 17th minute, Forster collected a Callum Smith pass before smashing his volley into the top corner of the net. Four minutes later and Shields could have easily had a second when Ryan Carr’s towering header, from a Nick Cassidy cross, was excellently tipped over the crossbar by Grainger. The Robins were really piling the pressure on the Benfield back line, with both Smith and Patton having efforts flying wide of the target. In the 37th minute, the visitors missed a golden chance
Both teams were struggling to create many chances of note as the game entered the final 10 minutes. It was Benfield though who came closest to levelling the game up when a Giraud corner in the 85th minute needed to be punched away by Purvis; with the ball eventually being cleared by a defender. But only three minutes later, Shields were gifted a chance to put the game to ben when they were awarded a penalty, when Patton was brought down inside the box by Grainger. Patton stepped up himself to take the spot kick, sending the keeper the wrong way to double the Robins’ lead, with only minutes remaining in the game. The hosts almost notched a consolation goal deep into added time, but Cooper’s thunderous effort from inside the penalty area flew inches over the crossbar. This results lifts North Shields into fourth place in the Ebac Northern League Division One table, whilst Newcastle Benfield sit in 12th.
GAZ BAINBRIDGE When you think back to our 2016 Northumberland Senior Cup win against Blyth Spartans, the one name that will always come to mind is Gaz Bainbridge. His two goals in that 4-3 victory helped the Robins to yet another major cup final success; only one year after lifting the FA Vase. In recent years, despite injuries limiting the striker’s time on the pitch, he has been able to draw level with Don Winskill, the club’s top post-war goal scorer. We take a moment to speak to Gaz about what beating Winskill’s record would mean to him, as well as how the club responded to a difficult start to the season. A couple of goals in the first half of the season saw you draw level with Don Winskill’s post-war goal scoring record. With you being so close to that record for so long now, how anxious are you to finally break it? “I have been anxious about it for some time. Having two bad injuries has delayed it a lot longer than I’d hoped, so I really want to get it done and out of the way” Just as you were hitting a vein of form, you were forced off early against Penrith with an injury which has kept you out for a large spell. How frustrating was that for you? “The injury was mega frustrating as it was worse than I originally thought. I was feeling good on the pitch and confident again. I’ve kept really fit and healthy while I’ve been away though so I am hoping it won’t take long to slot back in where I was before the injury”
Attendances are on the rise this season, not just at North Shields but across the league. In your opinion, why do you think more fans are returning to non-league football? “I feel non-league football attendances always reflect the fortunes of local pro teams. Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough aren’t doing great so that attracts people to the local non league game. As far as non league is concerned, it’s full of honest, hard-working players, giving their all which is what the modern pro game is missing to some fans” Tonight’s opponents are going brilliantly in Division Two this season and it looks almost certainly like they will be playing their football in Division One next season. With that being said, how important is it to not let our standards slip against what will be a tough side? “We shouldn’t let our standards slip against anyone. Standards are a fundamental part of any team or organisation. They breed good habits and discipline throughout. That’s what is back at NSFC now, those good standards which shows how together the squad is” Given how the club fell just short in last season’s Senior Cup Final at St James’ Park, is there an extra motivation amongst the side to go one better this time around?
“Each season is different, but what doesn’t change is that need and want for success. That’s reflected in trophies. To me though, the best success for me has been how well the squad have come together. Since going out of the Vase at Ryhope, they’ve really stuck at it and it’s showing on the pitch. That’ll bring trophies no doubt” You yourself played a key role in the clubs’ 4-3 Senior Cup Final win against Blyth Spartans back in 2016. In the lead up to that game, was there a confidence amongst the side that you were going to be heading back to North Shields as Senior Cup Champions? “During that whole era, we never felt anything other than winners. Losing that game never crossed our minds. I couldn’t see us leaving without that trophy, it was never a thought at all” As one of the experienced members of the squad, what has it been like to see the likes of Cam Cunningham and Paul Van-Zandvliet make such an impact in the first team? “We’ve has some quality players come and go over my time here. To really make a squad and be part of our club, you’ve got to be good, honest, hard-working lad. Paul and Cam are two that excel in that area; cracking lads. It gives me so much enjoyment to see how much it means to them to play for the club and bagging a goal here and there. Their reactions and emotions tell me they know what it means to play for NSFC”

A solo Gary Day strike was enough for the Robins to progress to the Northumberland Senior Cup final at the expense of Division Two side West Allotment Celtic. After a back-and-forth start to the game, Day’s strike midway through the first half gave the Robins the lead heading into the break. The lead could have been extended further in the second half but some excellent defending from West Allotment was enough to keep the Robins at bay. And whilst the hosts pressed forwards in search of an equaliser, the Robins back line remained resolute with a final at St James’ Park a just reward.
In baltic conditions, it was West Allotment who threatened to score first when Matthew Hayton shot at goal in the second minute, only for the ball to sail harmlessly wide of the untroubled Michael Robinson.
through on goal but could only fire wide.
The pressure finally paid off for the visitors as on the stroke of 30 minutes, Day benefitted from some more brilliant work from Summerly to bundle the ball over the goal line from close range, giving the Robins a deserved lead. Sensing an opportunity to take this game away from West Allotment, the Robins pressed forwards and in the 33rd minute, a back post header from Carr, following a Robinson freekick, came within inches of grazing the post. With Shields pressing forward , Allotment found space in the 35th minute to make a break for it and test the Robins defence. Despite having plenty of space in which to fashion a shot on goal, Michael Baxter seemed to slice at the ball, causing it to skew well wide.
As the hosts pressed forward, it created plenty of space for Paul Robinson and the returning Jordan Summerly to break down the wing. Unfortunately for Shields, their strong starts to the game didn’t result in an early opening goal.
After that first half, it was clear that a second goal was required for the Robins and if not for more excellent Allotment defending in the 47th minute, Cam Cunningham’s weighted cross would have found Robinson in space, ready to pounce.
Both teams were now up and running in this game, however, despite some good work from both West Allotment’s and the Robin’s midfield, neither goal was greatly troubled.
A flurry of chances were now falling the way of the visitors and a second goal seemed inevitable. Efforts from Spooner, Day and Robinson gave the hosts something to think about but the score still remained 1-0.
All this changed in the 20th minute when Day came close to giving the visitors the lead after connecting with a deep swinging corner. Despite his effort, Allotment keeper Sean Korsbo was able to make a smart save from close range. Coming that close to scoring seemed to be the opening that the Robins were looking for and if it wasn’t for some brilliant defending in the 22nd minute, Robinson’s excellent run down the left wing could have been the breakthrough. Despite being under pressure, West Allotment were not content with playing defensively; with two efforts from Hayton testing Robinson’s reflexes in the 23rd and 25th minute. The game was now very end to end, with both sides still unable to convert their chances. However, the Robins’ quality was beginning to shine through and in the 26th minute, an outstanding run and cross from Jack Donnison seemed to evade every single red shirt in the Allotment area. Not wanting to be undone by his fellow fullback, Summerly marauded forwards two minutes later and following a deft flick from Robinson, he was played
It took until the 79th minute before Robinson needed to dirty his gloves as a close-range effort at the near post needed parrying to safety. Coming this close to a leveller really spurred the hosts on as only two minutes later, Robinson was once again called into action when he was able to get his body behind a curling effort from inside the area. The Robins defence was really feeling the pressure being put on them by their Division Two opponents and in the 85th minute, they almost buckled. After a scramble in the Shields penalty area, a goal bound shot was excellently hooked off the line by Donnison before the ball was eventually cleared to safety. Despite the late pressure and another fine save from Robinson, West Allotment were unable to figure out the Robins defence, with the visitors holding on to their 1-0 lead and booking their place in the final at St James’ Park.

CLUB HISTORY The history of football in the community of West Allotment goes back into the early years of the last century. Indeed, the first organised club to represent the village competed in the Byker & District League as early as 1908/09. Various clubs came and went over the ensuing years but the formation of the West Allotment Primitive Methodists (PMs) team after World War I was the key step leading to the creation of the present-day club. The PMs competed in the Forest Hall & District Churches’ League with reasonable success until 1928. In 1928, the PMs began to feel the bite financially. Deeply-rooted in a coal-mining community and with the industry in turmoil following the General Strike, trying to maintain a local club was extremely difficult. So, facing ever-increasing debts, the decision was taken to wind-up the Primitive Methodists team and create a new club. That new club was effectively a merger of the old PMs team and West Allotment Juniors, another local club where it made sense to close-down, join forces and re-emerge stronger. So, the 1928/29 season saw West Allotment Celtic commence operations in the North Shields & District Churches’ League. Playing at Holystone and using old stables as changing-rooms, the club didn’t meet with instant success. However, eventually the League Cup was won in 1934/35 to provide Celtic with their first significant trophy. A move to the newly-created Tynemouth & District League in 1935 saw the club begin to become more of a force. Yet the initial signs were not promising, with Celtic losing 5-1 at Old Hartley Star and 2-1 at home to Earsdon Road Villa in their opening fixtures. To the relief of those from West Allotment, it didn’t take long for the players to find their feet. In fact, so good was the recovery that a ten-point gap between Celtic and the top of the table was closed before the season ended. The club then had to face Whitley Bay & Monkseaton Reserves in a play-off for the title and unfortunately the decider went the way of the seasiders Remarkably, Allotment also finished in a play-off position in the following two seasons too – and, in each case, lost the decider! The decision to move to a higher-grade of football was made in 1938 and the club joined the Second Division of the Northern Amateur League. Now playing at the aptly-named Farm Ground, which was to remain “home” until 1968, supporters helped to dismantle a cowshed in Heaton and move it, piece by piece to West Allotment where it was reassembled at the ground. The shed was not for spectators – it provided the players’ changing facilities! The club earned instant promotion (after a play-off, of course!) but World War II put a stop to any further progress. The club recommenced operations in 1946/47 and, slowly but surely, progress was made. Added to a solid nucleus of “old heads”, an influx of excellent players from the Juniors Section, started after the war, created a blend that was far too strong for Allotment’s rivals and the club enjoyed an unprecedented run of success from the mid-fifties onwards. The championship was won on four successive seasons between 1956-60, with the NFA Amateur Cup added in 1957 and the NFA Minor Cup captured in 1958. Unlike some of their rivals, the club decided to remain loyal to the Northern Amateur League rather than move to a higher level of competition. However, the bulk of the team did move on and the club lost the winning habit, leaving it to face some dire and mediocre times during the 1960s. In fact, the club was stagnating so badly, in a league that was struggling to retain a competitive number of teams, that closure was a real possibility for a while. Fortunately, that spectre was dismissed with the introduction of new blood into the club towards the end of the decade and, once again, the on and off-field strength began to be developed. The club also moved to Backworth Welfare in 1968, consigning the ponds and mud of the Farm Ground to memory. With the astonishing goal-scoring exploits of Benny Williams (his 400th goal for the team was scored in just his 412th appearance!) supported by strength in all positions, the team won the NFA Amateur Cup again in 1975 and were always amongst the title-chasers. However, the championship remained tantalisingly out of reach until 1982, when Allotment won a nail-biting play-off by the odd goal in seven against Annitsford Welfare. When the title was retained with ease the following season, the decision was taken to move up a grade for the first time since 1938. The 1983/84 season saw Allotment begin their Northern Alliance career and make their debut in the FA Vase. The first honour at the higher level arrived in 1985 when Ponteland United were beaten in the Alliance Challenge Cup Final at St James’ Park, Newcastle. The first of Allotment’s eight Alliance titles arrived soon after, in 1987, after two nail-biting play-off matches with Gosforth St Nicholas. The club continued to maintain high standards following that success, never finishing lower than sixth in the Northern Alliance and winning seven further titles. Particularly noteworthy was the hat-trick of titles between 1998-2000, won under the management team of Ken Scott and Billy Hays. In 1997/98, the team won twenty-four successive league matches on the way to clinching the championship. That successful duo was followed by another in the form of Terry Mitchell and Brian Latty, who maintained the exacting standard set by their predecessors. Terry and Brian led the club to championship success in three of the four years they were in charge, as well as guiding Allotment into the Northern League. There were also many cup successes and some exciting runs to the later stages of the FA Vase. Ever since Terry Mitchell left Allotment to join the professional ranks at Hartlepool in 2005, the club has experienced a topsy-turvy existence on the pitch, the low points being relegations to Division 2 of the Northern League in 2010/11 and 2016/17. Yet, counter-balancing these downswings, the club has regularly punched above its weight and even enjoyed occasional days back in the spotlight, such as when promotion was achieved in 2013/14, one year after Allotment had won the Ernest Armstrong Cup for a second time. Paul Stoneman and his management team were behind those successes and Paul was back at the helm during 2016/17 when the incumbent manager, Jon McDonald, unexpectedly left the club. Unfortunately, Paul was unable to prevent the club slipping to relegation and he left the club at the end of the season. He was replaced by Paul Bennett and Andrew Wood, who took over the team management role for a second time following a previous spell in charge during 2009-11. Faced with a complete rebuilding job, with minimum funding, Paul and Andrew did very well to steady a club rocking badly. Over fifty players were used during the 2017/18 campaign; yet, despite some extended runs without a win, the management steered the club well clear of any danger of relegation back into the Northern Alliance. Then, just as things appeared to be settling down, both Paul and Andrew were forced to leave the club due to work commitments. So, as the club celebrated its 90th birthday, it started a new season under new management once more. The “cavalry” had arrived in the shape of Alan Gate, Jay Bates and Gary Somerville. Alan had worked with the club under Bennett and Wood, whilst Jay and Gary arrived after handling management duties at Seaton Delaval Amateurs. The trio worked wonders to not only build a team from scratch but make it an exciting one to watch. A sixth-place finish gives great confidence that a promotion push might be on the cards during 2019/20; certainly, that is the aim. The positive vibe is reinforced by an increasing army of junior and women’s teams that play under the West Allotment Celtic badge and widen the club’s spread across all age groups and gender. In 2001, the club moved to Whitley Park in Benton after having acted as tenants at Hillheads in Whitley Bay from 1995. Allotment were to stay in Benton until the end of the 2016/17 season, when a major rise in the rent priced the facilities beyond the means of the club. Following a frantic period of activity during the summer of 2017, the club found another new home, this time at Druid Park in Woolsington, formerly the base of the long defunct Newcastle Blue Star club. This explains why the club currently plays so far from West Allotment itself - it was a life-saving move required to ensure the very existence of the club; indeed, the club tendered its resignation from the Northern League, so desperate was the situation. Yet, typical of the club throughout its history, it found strength in adversity and found a way forward.
WEST ALLOTMENT CELTIC SQUAD 2019/20
Finlay Hodgson (GK) Finn is a teenage goalkeeper of immense promise who made his debut for Allotment when only sixteen-years-old. His fledgling career started with stints at both Cramlington Juniors and New Hartley Juniors but he already has over fifty appearances for Celtic under his belt.
Kurt Burns (DF)
Sean Korsbo (GK) Sean made 31 appearances for Allotment last season and has resigned for 2019-20 to provide a fine back-up option to Finn Hodgson.
Tony Lucas (DF)
Michael Scott (DF)
Ryan Higgins (DF)
Twenty-three-year-old central defender Michael signed for Allotment during the summer of 2018 and is another player who arrived from Seaton Delaval, where he was team captain. He has proven to be a fine acquisition, performing consistently well whether at full-back or in the centre of the defence.
Ryan is a twenty-one-year-old defender/midfielder who signed for Allotment during the closeseason and has quickly established himself as a first-team regular, usually operating on the right flank in either a defensive or offensive role. He had previously been on a year’s scholarship in the USA.
Luke Parkinson (DF)
Mikel Thompson (DF)
School teacher Kurt signed for Celtic in October 2018 and made his debut away to Ryton & Crawcrook in an EA Memorial Cup match. Kurt can play equally effectively in the centre of defence or as a full-back, where his pacey bursts up the flanks are a feature of his game.
Tony provides an imposing presence in midfield or defence and joined Celtic from Seaton Delaval.
Luke made his debut for Allotment as a teenager back in 2005 before going on to play for Newcastle Blue Star, Ashington and Tow Law Town. Luke, who can play on the left of midfield or at left-back re-joined Celtic in 2014 and is now fast approaching 200 appearances for the club.
Mikel can operate at full-back or in midfield and has previously represented Newcastle Benfield and Heaton Stannington. He took a year out of the game but is now back and has been a regular starter since the season started. He grabbed his first goal for Celtic against Billingham Synthonia in August.
Jack Errington (DF)
Michael Leech (DF)
Jacob Forster (MF)
Callum Carney (MF)
Jack was on the books of Burnley and turned out for Newcastle Benfield and Blyth Spartans before representing Blyth AFC during 2017/18. Jack made his competitive debut for Allotment at home to Brandon Utd in the opening game of last season and has gone on to be a pivotal figure, as befitting the team captain. “Erra” can operate in midfield but has usually played in the centre of defence for Allotment.
Michael joined Allotment in August 2018 after representing the Amateurs of Seaton Delaval and Percy Main and made the step up to Northern League level with ease. Michael made 38 appearances, usually as left-back, during the 18/19 campaign, scoring twice and has continued to be a mainstay of the team this season.
Only twenty years old, Jacob signed for Allotment after playing for Percy Main Amateurs. Prior to joining Percy Main, Jacob moved up through the junior ranks at Walker Central FC and represented Northumberland at Under -18 level. Very strong and capable of using both feet equally well, Jacob operates from box-to-box and always has an eye for goal.
Young midfielder Callum signed for Allotment in July 2019 after being with South Shields Academy last season. He had an impressive pre-season and has made himself a regular member of the match-day squad.
Bruno Mendes-Correia (MF)
Shane Donaghey (MF)
Michael Trodd (MF)
Providing a physical presence upfront, with no little skill on the ball, Bruno has proved to be a handful for opposition teams since making his debut for Allotment in August 2017. His versatility means he can be deployed in positions across the pitch.
Midfielder Shane made fourteen appearances for Celtic last season, scoring twice, before going off to play in Norway. He re-joined the club in September to add yet more genuine quality to the squad.
Midfielder Michael was with Celtic last season but had few chances to shine. He is now a first-team regular who can pick a killer pass and strike the ball with ferocious force.
Gil made his debut for Allotment in the opening match of the 2017/18 season after previously representing Horden, South Shields, Progresso Sambizanga (Angola), Jarrow, Consett and Newcastle Benfield. Not scared to tackle (to which his disciplinary record pays testimony!), Gil also has a useful trick or two and was “Players’ Player of the Year” last season.
Nicky Whitelaw (FW)
Shane Jones (FW)
Abubakar Salim (FW)
Matthew Hayton (FW)
“Abu” was with Heaton Stannington last term but signed for Allotment during the closeseason. He is a pacey forward with quick feet and glides past opponents with silky ease. Abu is a cool finisher and is maintaining a very impressive strike rate for Celtic.
Attacker who joined Allotment from Seaton Delaval, where he was a very consistent scorer. Matty’s non-stop endeavour and excellent first-touch mean no defender can relax and he puts in a full shift even when not on the scoresheet. Scored twenty goals in forty-three appearances last season, was named “Club Player of the Year”, and has continued that form this season.
Striker Nicky signed for Allotment during the close-season of 2017 after spells with Wallsend Boys Club and Percy Main. He has struggled from a series of injuries but has notched over fifty appearances for Allotment, scoring eight goals.
John Campbell (FW) John re-signed for Celtic in early October 2018, nine years after his previous short, explosive, spell with the club. John’s initial appearances for Allotment back in 2009 brought a netful of goals as well as many demonstrations of outstanding skill and technique. In between the stints with Allotment, John has turned out for a number of clubs, including at football league level with Oxford United. His most recent clubs at Northern League level have been Newcastle Benfield and Heaton Stannington.
Shane joined Allotment from Heaton Stannington in January 2019 and made an instant impact with a brace of goals away to Chester-le-Street on his debut. He has continued to find the net ever since, with a highly impressive goals-to-game ratio, with many of them being stunning longrange strikes.
Dean Walker (FW) Dean first played for Allotment as a youngster back in 2009 but resigned from Blyth AFC in August 2017 and works tirelessly upfront, not giving defenders (or referees!) a moment of peace. He has now made over a century of appearances for Celtic and regularly takes a selfless battering on behalf of the team.
MANAGEMENT TEAM Alan Gate (M) Formerly on the coaching staff at Cullercoats FC, Chairman and coach at Wallsend Boys Club (Seniors) and Club Secretary and coach at Walker Central FC. He holds a FA Level 2 coaching badge, is qualified as a Level II personal fitness instructor and has been involved in grassroots football for over thirty years.
Jay Bates (M) Registered as a player for Allotment but started his career at Walker Central FC. He attracted the attention of Newcastle United when a junior but decided to join the Army, where he forged an impressive playing career whilst attending to his army commitments. Jay also possesses a FA Level 2 coaching badge and created very useful teams at both Walker Central and Seaton Delaval.
