U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito is the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate in West Virginia’s history. In 2015, Capito was elected to the U.S. Senate with more than 62% of the vote, the largest victory margin for a Republican running in a statewide race in the history of West Virginia. She won all of the state’s 55 counties. During her time in the Senate, Capito has sponsored more than 100 pieces of legislation and served on the Appropriations Committee, the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, the Environment and Public Works Committee, and the Rules and Administration Committee. She is the only freshman to chair a subcommittee on the powerful Appropriations committee. Before being elected to the Senate, Capito served in the U.S. House of Representatives where she represented West Virginia’s second district for 14 years. She was the first woman elected to the U.S. House from West Virginia. In 1996, Capito was elected to the 31st District of the West Virginia House of Delegates, where she served two terms and was the minority chairman on the Health and Human Resources Committee and a member of the Judiciary and Banking and Insurance Committees.
Capito ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2001 and was elected to represent West Virginia’s 2nd District. During her fourteen years in the House, she served on the Financial Services Committee and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Capito and her husband, Charles, live in Charleston.
