New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was a candidate for president in the 2016 Republican primary. First elected governor in 2010, he was re-elected to his second term in 2013. The governor's top priorities include balancing the state’s budget, education reform, and changing the national conversation about drug addiction and treatment. Governor Christie has signed six consecutive balanced budgets without increasing the tax burden on citizens and fought for a two-percent cap on property taxes. He has also signed into law bipartisan legislation to reform teacher tenure and establish a state-wide, mandatory drug court program that places a heavier emphasis on treatment for non-violent, drug-addicted offenders. Governor Christie led New Jersey through one of the worst natural disasters in its history. After Superstorm Sandy struck the state's coast in 2011, his administration delivered assistance to residents and businesses, playing a key role in the on-going efforts to rebuild coastal communities impacted by the storm. Chris met his wife, Mary Pat, at the University of Delaware. The two were married in 1986 and now have four children. Official Bio
