After receiving his undergraduate degree from Manhattan College in The Bronx and his law degree from New York University Law School, Giuliani completed a clerkship with a United States District Court Judge for the Southern District of New York and then went to work for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C. In 1977, Giuliani left government service to pursue private law practice, returning in 1981 to serve as President Reagan’s Associate Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice. In 1983, Giuliani was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, a position he held for six years.

After an unsuccessful run in 1989, Giuliani was elected mayor of New York City in 1993. In his first two years in office, his policies helped reduce serious crime by one-third and cut the city's murder rate in half. Giuliani was wrapping up his second term in office when New York City was attacked on September 11, 2001. Immediately following the attack, Giuliani coordinated rescue operations that saved as many as 20,000 lives. Because of his strong leadership in the aftermath of September 11th, Americans came to see him as a voice of reassurance and consolation during an uncertain time.
