Leslie Rutledge was born in Batesville, Arkansas. She is a seventh generation Arkansan who acquired her passion for the law and public service from her father, a lawyer and a judge, and her mother, a schoolteacher. Rutledge graduated from the University of Arkansas School of Law and began clerking for Judge Josephine Hart on the Arkansas Court of Appeals. She then served as Deputy Counsel in Governor Mike Huckabee’s office, and from there, went on to work for the Deputy Prosecutor’s office in Lonoke County and for the Arkansas Division of Children and Family Services, protecting Arkansas’s most vulnerable citizens. Rutledge’s election in 2014 was the first time a woman or a Republican had been elected Arkansas Attorney General. Under her leadership, the AG’s office focuses on consumer protection, cyber-crime, internet safety, assisting active military and veterans, and aiding crime victims. Rutledge has also joined Arkansas with Texas and other states in challenging the constitutionality of the Obama Administration’s executive orders on immigration and in filing to protect personal property rights.
