FOREWORD Since the first case of Corona Virus was confirmed by the
Ministry of Health on March 13, 2020, the tourism sector has taken a great hit. The whole world has shut down and stringent measures have been put in place to contain the spread of the virus. Countries across the world have suspended international flights and laid strict guidelines for the operating local airlines. Hotels have also felt the pinch of this pandemic as there is barely any traffic into their guest rooms. Most restaurants are now doing take away and deliveries to their customers.
In the midst of these hard times, let’s focus our attention on containing the Coronavirus, then later we shall shift our focus on building our economy. The tourism sector must play a key role and be in the forefront to promote responsible travelling hygiene and enhance use of media to educate the public. Hotels and restaurants should take the necessary steps to protect their customers and staff. I urge Hotels, Travel and Tour Operators & Associations, to put their people first and consider not laying their staff off, while the government works on containing the outbreak. We must all come together to find innovative solutions to tackle this menace. The government through the Ministry of Health, is actively sharing online, on ways to minimize the risk of contracting the Coronavirus. Let’s adopt these forms of proper hygiene in all our Hotels, Lodges, Airlines, Tour Vans and Restaurants. Additional information can be found on the Ministry of Health’s website and twitter handle, www.health.go.ke and @MOH_Kenya respectively.

FOREWORD KENYA JOINS #TRAVELTOMORROW CAMPAIGN. The world all over is experiencing the greatest health emergency, Coronavirus (COVID 19); where all sectors that contribute to the economy have been affected. Tourism is one of such sectors that has been hard hit by the pandemic. Consequently, Governments around the world have put in place stringent travel restrictions to curb the spread of the disease, Kenya has taken the bold, but necessary, step to stop international flights coming to Kenya as a precaution against the spread of the disease. To help encourage people to shelve their travel plans for now, tourism sector players have come out to show support for the fight against the scourge by encouraging travellers to heed to the call to #StayAtHome for now and #TravelTomorrow. #StayAthome #TravelTomorrow is a campaign launched by the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) to sensitize travellers about the importance of staying at home now, while planning to travel later. The campaign has been well received by many of its member states as well as the global tourism community. The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) the agency responsible for the marketing of the country has joined the campaign to sensitize the public about the challenging times and the importance of staying at home as advised but also use this time to plan and explore the unforgettable experiences of Kenya’s tourism magic tomorrow. To enhance awareness of the campaign, KTB is locally running an awareness campaign dubbed ‘Tujilinde Leo, Tusafiri Kesho’ targeting domestic tourists while on the international front, it continues to enhance the Travel Tomorrow message. The board is putting people first and sensitising the tourism sector to ensure the necessary precautionary protocols are observed to curb and defeat the pandemic and will be happy to welcome the world back to Kenya when they travel tomorrow. (UNWTO) in these challenging times has been engaging the World Health Organization (WHO) and other allied tourism organizations to look at ways to mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the tourism sector as well as urging governments to include tourism as part of their recovery plans. Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife
14 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com
Hon. Najib Balala joined other colleague ministers and international partners in a UNWTO convened virtual call session under the global tourism committee on March 19, 2020. Advocating for the message, “Stay Home Today and Travel Tomorrow,” the UNWTO Leaders meeting emphasized the need for all member states to put in all the initial efforts in ‘people first’ communication that takes cognizance of the safety of travellers and employees in the sector. The Kenyan tourism private sector has been in the frontline in securing both the safety of visitors and staff alike. The players in the tourism sector have held several meetings to ensure that safety and WHO standard measures are adhered to at all tourism facilities and points of entry. This is also in line with the Ministry of Health’s directives in Kenya which the tourism sector is supporting. The country closed its borders including international flights on Wednesday 25th March, a direct impact on arrivals into the country. As we continue with our campaign - StayAthome #TravelTomorrow, we commend Go Places for continuous promotion of tourism products and experiences through their various communication platforms. This will indeed go a long way in ensuring that the destination remains top of mind among travellers. Let us all stay home today, so that we can travel tomorrow.

FOREWORD THE TRAVEL & TOURISM SECTOR RECOVERY PLAN! Following the current COVID-19 outbreak in Kenya and globally, the travel and tourism sector has been adversely affected. The travel and tourism sector is the backbone of our economy. It brings in vital currency and investments, creates jobs and stimulates every sector. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) figures, travel and tourism contributes to 10.4 percent of the global GDP and 320 million jobs. In the past eight years, one in five new jobs created has been in the travel and tourism sector. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, 50 million jobs globally are at risk. So what is Kenya’s travel and tourism sector recovery plan? The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife has set aside Ksh500 million for its post Coronavirus recovery plan. The funds will be used to restore confidence in MagicalKenya in all our key source markets so as to ensure that Kenya remains a preferred travel destination globally. To minimise the economic and financial impact brought about by the pandemic, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has released Ksh35.2 billion as additional liquidity availed to banks to directly support borrowers distressed by the pandemic. Furthermore, CBK lowered the Central Bank Rate (CBR) to 7.25 percent from 8.25 and reduced the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) to 4.25 percent from 5.25 percent. The tourism industry welcomes these new measures by the CBK. The travel and tourism sector can take advantage of those measures that have been put in place by the Kenyan Government. Even though we are currently living in unprecedented times, let’s remember that these times will not last forever. Therefore it is important we join the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in the campaign, “Staying at home today means traveling tomorrow”. Staying at home will enable us to flatten the pandemic curve and ensure we rebuild our economy, sooner than later. Let’s also follow other precautionary measures that the Ministry of Health has advised such as washing our hands regularly with soap and running water, cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue or bent elbow, maintain a distance of at least 2 meters between yourself and anyone who is coughing

or sneezing, avoid shaking hands, hugging or kissing with people with flu-like symptoms, and stay at home and avoid travelling when you have flu-like symptoms. Let’s do our part even as the government does its part. I would also like to commend Go Places for their active role and support in promoting Kenya as a preferred travel destination and congratulate them on the re-launch of their newly designed website www.goplaceskenya.com that showcases recommended Accommodation, Conference and Wine & Dine facilities as well as Experiences one can enjoy in our Magical Kenya. FOREWORD Time to stand in solidarity with Kenya, Buy Kenyan, Build Kenya! It is no secret that the world is in a serious health crisis. Covid-19 has come and taken the World by storm. It is spreading fast beyond global borders like fire on dry grass. Globally, companies have hit the pause button and the world has been shut down as every Country, Region and Continent ups their efforts in containing the spread of the virus. The World Economy has literally been infected by the virus. The Covid-19 has put to test the world preparedness in addressing emerging issues in the wake of globalization. There are however hopes that this calamity will be contained and investments in future analytical systems and structures will cushion global economy from adverse effects of such pandemics. Globalization has come with a unified approach in advancing economies to prosperity. Clearly, Covid-19 has caught the world by surprise and it is emerging as a global challenge that might be as serious as the World War 2. The pandemic has unified the globe as every continent strives to fight the virus. In Kenya, the Government has already confirmed 16 cases of the virus. The Government has announced several measures to contain the spread, including suspending all learning activities in all institutions, urging employers to allow staff to work from home, suspending all travel to and from the country, among other measures. The economy, which largely depends on the agricultural sector, with tea and coffee exports being the most important drivers, has experienced shock. The shock if prolonged can hurt the economic growth projections. The second most important engine of Kenya’s economy is the tourism, hospitality and the entire service sector, which relies on people moving and getting services in restaurants, hotels and shopping malls and a shutdown will have a direct effect on the economy. Covid-19 has affected World logistical networks consequently affecting the movement of goods and services. Companies have slowed down their activities and operations. If Kenyans can heed the call by the Government, the spread of the disease will be stopped, and we will restore our economy. The world has always experienced high rates of growth after such natural calamities. People come back more bold, disciplined, and united for a common goal, to improve the living conditions of everyone. The government’s call of social distancing is timely in curbing the spread of the Covid-19. If fully observed, it will make Kenya more resilient and stronger in our quest to enhance socio-economic and political development of our country as envisaged in the Vision 2030, Big Four Agenda as well as the Building Bridges Initiative. This is the perfect time for Kenyans to stand up for Kenya, to promote, buy Kenyan and to collectively safeguard the
Kenyan brand. As a Kenyan, what actions are you taking at an individual level to help contain the virus and make Kenya stand tall even as we collectively combat the health crisis? It’s commendable that most companies have put in place measures to contain the spread of the virus, even in the phase of loss making. During this time of crisis, Kenya has demonstrated her competitive edge in the pharmaceutical, e-commerce and manufacturing industries. Kenya is indeed a manufacturing hub in sectors like health and food products alike. MPESA and other e-commerce milestones have assisted Kenyans in maintaining the social distance. We are able to shop and have goods delivered at our doorsteps which is a commendable progress by Kenyans. Clearly, this has become a perfect time for us to buy and promote Kenyan products and help boost the local manufacturing industry. It is time to explore our homegrown solutions like e-learning platforms and e-commerce platforms to promote Kenya. It is also time to stand in solidarity as Kenyans and collectively conquer this virus by priding in what is Kenyan and creating more demand for local products. And even after, Kenyans should always rally with the Government in making Kenya the Country we all want. Unity will make Kenya achieve her targets and ensure all Kenyans enjoy timely quality health services, food security, quality shelter and a huge manufacturing sector as envisaged in the Country’s Big Four Agenda. Kenya is a great country that all of us must be proud of. Let us promote a culture of togetherness, peace, love, happiness and unity for sustained economic development The Kenya Exports Promotion and Branding Agency (Brand. KE) will continue to collaborate with key institutions to offer business advisory and create value for local products whilst also promoting the Kenyan Brand. Stay safe as you safeguard Kenya, buy Kenyan and help build Kenya!

THE SULTRY SIGHTS AND SOUNDS FROM THE LAKE It is ten minutes to 6.00am. It has been a fairly rainy night right from the stillness of midnight all the way to the crack of dawn. Light showers are softly pounding on the roof of my guest room of the beautifully homely Naishi Guest House located on the floor of the Great Rift Valley escarpment that is Lake Nakuru National Park. I’m in the company of my three friends from our university days who no longer reside in Kenya. On one hand, I’m ‘ready’ and ‘not ready’ for the day but on the other I’m toying with the oddly nudging idea of kicking off my boots, hop on back into the bottomless depths of warmth and coziness of my bed and slip into a lazy ‘illegal’ morning nap and snore my life away as the morning soft pound of the rain drowns my horrible snores away. There’s something about a rainy day or night while you are in the comfort of your bed. That feeling should have a name. I have less than eight minutes now to decide on either. “Tsk”! I click my tongue in my subconscious; I quickly grab my notebook, pen, phone and camera and dash to the car park where the engine of our tour van is slowly coming to life ready for an epic early morning orbit around the Park in the presence of breathtaking landscapes, sights and sounds of the spectacle that is Lake Nakuru National Park. Lake Nakuru is sultry bewitching. She’s been sitting in my to do list for some time now and only lately that I’ve been actively stalking her. So, my main mission here is simple; savor her, smell her, lose my thoughts in her as I discover her charm and all that embodies her. Our driver guide Saruni quickly ushers us into the van and out of the compound we disappear. We make a trail of light dust. As we crane our heads out of the roof of the van, the cold, clean crisp humid air brushes our faces. From a distance, they chirp, bellow, growl and howl! Lo and behold! The wild is awake! And when it is awake, it is show time. This early morning game drive that I almost forego proves to be rewarding and eventful in the very first hour into it. We bump into a mother rhino and her calf peacefully grazing away with the calf trying to occasionally reach her mother’s udder for some much needed morning breakfast nourishment. Before we can live in the moment of this sight to behold, our driver guide barks; ‘guys! Pointing into the opposite direction’ ‘Ndio wale faru wengine pale’! (Look! We have other rhinos over there!) We turn our heads almost in unison to count a total of other four white rhinos. ‘Wow’! We exclaim. It’s a great day already!
yet another beautiful day. As we exit scene, a herd of zebras, giraffes and buffalos at the far end litter our exit route to the only water fall called Makalia. Its earth brown waters drop lazily from several meters above our highest eye view. Water in motion is such a therapeutic sight. It kinda drowns ones thoughts albeit temporarily just to live in that moment. Our orbit around the park leads us into the gates of the park’s highest viewpoints. Out of Africa ushers us into the most breathtaking views of the Lake Nakuru ecosystem and the Nakuru town hazily popping from the yonder horizon. This point is such a vantage point that everything down below and around the park seems to appear in some sort of a 3D movie format. The thing with tourism, one has to be physically present in space and time at a destination to absorb the sights, sounds and great vibes of nature. As we head down to the Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge for lunch, our driver guide takes us into yet another view point that we later come to learn from him is the baboon cliff. This cliff is eerily intimidating! It will rekindle your height phobia day or night dreams but still a great spot. The thick lush and green canopies of Acacia vegetation down heights below appear like a thick carpet from our view, soft and spongy, comfort for two tired and sore feet beaten by the very ground they walk on. A soft breeze blows from the direction of the Acacia to the surface of the somewhat calm swollen waters of the lake. A wavy culmination of a soft tide disappears as quickly as it forms. For a moment, I take a deep breath stare into the vast waters of the lake and just like that, my thoughts get lost in that particular moment until a soft tap on my right shoulder brings me back to ‘life’. It’s time to actually head down for some late lunch at exactly 3.00pm. Later in the afternoon, we manage to catch the big cats of Lake Nakuru at sun down despite the light showers. The lions are in no hurry, we keep them company as we zoom away our lenses until we exit scene, yet again. This has been an absolutely rewarding day, just when we decided to become intentional about savoring Lake Nakuru for a day in the company of friends. Karen Blixen Museum Nairobi, Kenya In 1914 Karen Dinesen married her Swedish second cousin, Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke, giving her the title Baroness. The couple moved to Kenya, and celebrated their wedding in Mombasa the day after their arrival. As pioneers to Africa they operated a coffee plantation bought with funds donated to them by their families. The Museum was built in 1912 by Swedish Engineer Ake Sjorgen. Karen and her husband bought the house in 1917 and it became the farm house for their 4500 acre farm of which 600 acres was used for coffee farming. The couple separated in 1921 and were divorced in 1925 with Karen being left to run the coffee plantation as it went through misfortune and mishap. While still in Africa, she met and fell in love with English big game hunter Denys Finch Hatton, with whom she lived from 1926 to 1931. In her memoir Out of Africa he is simply described as a friend. Their intimate, but sometimes volatile relationship, was prematurely ended by Finch Hatton’s death in a plane crash in 1931.
She left the farm in 1931 and returned to Denmark. Blixen earnestly immersed herself in a writing career. In 1934, her authorial debut, Seven Gothic Tales, was published under the pseudonym of “Isak Dinesen,” Her second book, the one that became her best known, was her lyrical and compelling memoir Out of Africa published in 1937. This book, vivid in its description of farming and native peoples; however, lacks historical detail about her time there and the narrative has been described as “though the author was recounting a dream.” An Oscar winning film was shot and named Out of Africa based on the book. In 1985, with renewed interest in Karen Blixen occasioned the the film production of Out of Africa, an agreement was reached for the house to become part of the National Museums of Kenya. Many pieces of furniture that Karen Blixen sold to Lady McMillan on her departure were acquired back and constitute part of the exhibition in the Museum.

LAMU
O
ver the decades, Lamu Island has continued to weather trip-advisories earning nicknames such as Venice of Africa from outgoers all over the world. Rightfully so for its relaxed rhythm, way of life it leads, privacy that it offers, immaculate beaches stretching endlessly in the azure of the Indian Ocean, and its peace that speaks to the heart and soul. Its magical beauty and attraction pivots on its old town that dates back to 700 years ago and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Call the Go Places Travel Desk on:+254719764000 /786974634 or visit goplacesholidays.com to book your experience
Lamu’s culture is represented by its 17 festivals. The main festival is the Lamu Cultural Festival – the biggest and oldest – that aims to promote the rich Swahili culture. Lamu lets you experience all that beauty from scratch as it is home to beautiful hotels like the Majilis Resort, a worldclass service hotel with views of the Ras Kitau bay on Manda Island, or The Red Pepper House, that specializes in Swahili and Mediterranean cuisine. Hotels that you can stay in and explore the serene Lamu. If you want to have a laid-back vacation but still have a good time this Easter holiday season in Lamu, here are places you should certainly visit.
38 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com
Lamu Museums Lamu is endowed with a rich history that is both
mysterious and fascinating, given that it began life in the early 14th century as a Swahili settlement. Its history is best discovered by paying an educational visit to its museums located in the Lamu Archipelago on the Northern Coast. Like the Lamu Museum, which was built in 1813 and served as a prison for the British Colonial regime and Kenyan Government from 1910 to 1984 before it was handed over to the National Museums - it offers an overview of the region. German Post Office Museum was built in the early 19th century and became the first post office in East Africa. Later being transformed to a museum in 1996. Lamu Fort Museum, standing in the centre of Lamu town, is a must-visit since it is easily accessible and it gives you a glimpse of the traditional setup of a Swahili home. The Lamu Fort Museum has three sections; a marine section, freshwater, and terrestrial.
Explore Lamu town Once you hop out of the dhow or the speed-
boat from the mainland in Lamu town, the first thing you notice besides the calming atmosphere and the welcoming attitude of the locals is the long wandering narrow streets that have refused to change for centuries. Giving you the urge to remove your shoes and explore the authenticity of this old town in the most natural way possible. Its authenticity pops up in its bustling markets, endless donkeys, the ancient fort, and wood carved doors.
Get Lost in Shela Village Located a few kilometres away from Lamu
town, Shela village has golden sand flanked
by sand dunes. It has the best spots for beach strolls in the beautiful white sand beach that stretches for miles. It has the best high-end hotels and restaurants and has more tourists compared to Lamu town. However, as a village, Shela is filled with donkeys wandering along the tall stone townhouses, mosques, ruins and small thatched houses that are easier to get lost into.
Exercise on the Beach While in Lamu, start your day by breathing in
and out the fresh air, and doing some yoga sprints up the sand dunes at Shela Beach before the sun comes out. Lamu has become a major attraction for yoga enthusiasts. For more exercises, get yourself a good captain (and friends), and escape the heat in Lamu by exploring the surroundings and getting yourself involved in scuba diving and snorkelling at Manda Toto.
Hire a Traditional Dhow With dhow and donkey being the only forms
of transport around Lamu, you certainly have to have enough of the feeling to last you long enough till the next time you visit Lamu. So hiring a dhow for a leisure cruise around the island at sunset with a sundowner in your hand is not negotiable.
Gaze at the sunset on Manda Island There is no better place to watch the wonderful
African sunset than on Manda Island. Here the sun sets unhurriedly with a beautiful aura, and you can watch as it goes down clearly from this island since it is mostly uninhabited, vast, empty and with clean beaches stretching wide and beyond.

To view Go PlacesTM Travel tip: Be prepared for the sun and water, as Los Cabos is a coastal region. 42 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com
Where To Wine & Dine? For an unforgettable wine and dine experience, the Los Cabos Winery Restaurant is a good option, located just a few blocks from the main town. And it offers mouth-watery pasta, seafood, and fork-friendly steak, spruced up with some Jazz music. To explore more of what Los Cabos has to offer, beyond tequila and tacos cuisines, head to Cabo San Lucas, or Los Tres Gallos . One of Los Cabos sports bars and spring breaker clubs that serve authentic Mexican food such as enchiladas verdes, chicken tinga sopecitos and margaritas served in up cycled tequila bottles and awardingwinning chocolate tacos, all in a fairy-lit, papelpicado-strewn courtyard. A good choice for dinner would be Marina, with the locals and tourists alike at the Baja Lobster Company, for lobster tacos and a sip of a margarita made with top-shelf tequila.
Time’s Running Out…
Take an after-dinner stroll through Cabo’s solid downtown and grab small gifts for your loved ones back at home, from a score of stalls laden with Mexican handicrafts and other souvenirs. Then head to Marina, if a nightcap is in order, to catch a drink by the waterside, and sway to the music emanating from the nearby clubs. 24 HOURS IN Galway City, Ireland
Located at the estuary of River Corrib and the Atlantic Ocean, Galway city shares an in-depth intimacy with the sea. Which it shares with its visitors who long for not only a moment with the Atlantic, but also a taste of the sophisticated Bohemian cool and traditional culture on the edge of the wild Atlantic Way. Galway City has a picturesque scenery hinging along the jaw-dropping Connemara Peninsula, and tiny roads wandering along a coastline studded with islands, sparkling white sandy beaches, and intriguing villages. BREAKFAST AT ARD BIA With most of Galway’s restaurants enjoying a sleepin, there is no need to panic. Ard Bia restaurant opens pretty early to put your worries for a novelty breakfast aside. It presents you with a rich menu containing sweet treats such as buttermilk pancakes with orange, lemon and poppy seed, vanilla marscapone and runny honey, and stuffed French toast with poached pear, soft cheese and cinnamon orchard syrup, among others. They also spoil you with two other choices of full fried breakfasts: the veggie Hippy Fry (poached eggs, mushroom, spinach, roast tomatoes, potato cake with spiced tomato relish
and toast) and the epic Full Fry (Colleran’s smoked streaky bacon, oat black pudding, sausages, poached eggs and roast tomato with spiced tomato relish and toast). Ard Bia stands out as one of Galway’s most enduring restaurants, housed in one of the city’s most iconic restaurants spaces. VISIT GALWAY’S CITY MUSEUM To know the city’s history, the Galway’s City Museum is the open sesame that conveys the city’s archaeological, political, cultural and social history. It’s a go-to spot if you want to learn more about Galway and its UNESCO city film status, what

the city looked like in the late 19th century, or its role in the revolutionary events that shaped the Republic of Ireland. Whilst there, you can go on a gallery tour, attend talks and workshops, and watch the rotating displays of works by local artists. Finish your tour around the modern spacious building with a cup of coffee and a piece of cake on the ground floor café, with a view of the Spanish Arch. WALK THE SALTHILL PROMENADE You definitely have to make the therapeutic walk to the Salthill Promenade. The walk gives you a chance to experience the tight-knit relationship that Galway
shares with the sea. Experience this is at the little seaside suburb of Salthill, where you can see the Aran Islands and the Clare Hills on a clear day. There is a tradition that decrees you should “kick the wall” at the end of promenade for good luck. However, if the walk and the ‘kick the wall’ is not your thing, grab a bag of chips and some fish and sit on the beach and enjoy the beautiful sunset. Finish your walk with a pint or two in O’ Connor’s bar with trinkets filled to the brim. You could also visit the Cliffs of Moher. DISCOVER GALWAY’S FOOD SCENE There is no better place for you to experience Galway food scene than the Michelin-starred Loam and wine bar restaurant, located just off Eyre Square. The restaurant focuses on modern ambitious cooking rooted in tradition, and its menu includes everything that makes Galway food scene; from fresh local oysters, mussels, and other kinds of seafood. EXPLORE MEDIEVAL GALWAY Exploring the medieval Galway will take your visit to a whole new different level. Because it will paint a picture in your mind of how Galway in its heyday grew from strength to strength. From a small village to a prosperous walled town ruled by 14 merchant families – known as the Tribes of Galway – in the 13th century. All these coming to you while standing at the late 16th century Spanish Arch looking out to the vast Atlantic Ocean. EXPERIENCE GALWAY’S PARTY LIFE End your trip to Galway in style by hopping onto its party life, because when it comes to partying, Galway city takes the trophy. It does not matter whether you visit in July when the City hosts the Galway International Arts Festival, Galway Film Fleadh, or in September when it hosts Galway International Oyster Festival. Either way, prepare to party. The treat of the city’s lively party life spreads across the whole city in pubs like Tigh Neachtain on Cross street, where you can savour the Galway Hooker craft beer, and others such as Toaffes, Tigh Coili, The Crane Bar among others that play live traditional folk-Irish music all night to make it unforgettable. Ti p: Plan your meals as restaurants and pubs do not serve food all day. Instead, there are certain times during the day that food is available. For example, a restaurant might stop serving food after lunch but stay open only to sell drinks until dinnertime.

THE WESTERN HERITAGE CIRCUIT Kenya has a rich historical, cultural and natural heritage found around the country. In Western Kenya, we have abundance in the little known attractions that we will explore here today. Come visit the Western heritage circuit and learn all about the rich heritage tourist attractions that awaits you. This is a sample of some of the attractions.
KISUMU MUSEUM
Located in Kisumu town, along the Kisumu-Kericho highway, the museum exhibits the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Western region. Live exhibits within the compound include reptiles and amphibians found in the natural environment of this region. A display of a traditional Luo homestead gives visitors a
peek into the traditional cultural lifestyle of the people in this region.
HISTORICAL SITES Thimlich Ohinga Archaelogical Site
In western Kenya, there are a number of old villages and settlement sites marked by dry stone walling, a characteristic of unique architecture. These settlements are referred to locally as ‘Ohingni’, a name that connotes an idea of a refuge in the wilderness. The ‘Ohingni’ literally refers to a “frightening dense forest” in Dholuo language. A total of 138 sites exist. While the uphill stone structures have survived the vagaries of weather, the ones on the lower
64 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com
side have been degraded. The stone structure enclosure has walls ranging from 1.0 to 4.2 meters in height and 1.0 to 3.0 m in width, were built of loose stones and blocks without any dressing or mortar. Within the structures are interior partitions of various kinds including: small enclosures, depressions and corridors. These were used as either as cattle kraals, pens for smaller animals or garden fence structures. Archaeological record of materials found within the site goes beyond 500 years ago. Since the present inhabitants of the area arrived about three centuries ago, it seems most likely that Bantus who initially occupied this region prior to
the arrival of the Luo first built the stone structures. Abundant rocks on the hilly areas provided them with building materials to meet their security requirements.
Kit Mikayi
This is a rock formation about 40metres high located about 29 km west of Kisumu town. Legend has it that, Kit Mikayi, which in Luo dialect means “the stone of the first wife”: Long time ago, there was an old man by the name Ngeso who was in great love with the stone. Every day when he woke up in the morning, he could walk into the cave inside the stone and stay there the whole day, and this could force his wife to bring him breakfast and lunch every day. The old man became passionately in love with this stone to the extent that when people asked his wife his whereabouts, she would answer that he has gone to his first wife (Mikayi) hence the stone of the first wife (Kit Mikayi). An explanation of the shape of this unique stone is that the structure represents the Luo cultural polygamous family which had the first wife’s house (Mikayi) built further in between on the right hand side was the second wife’s house (Nyachira) while the third wife’s house (Reru) was built on the left hand side of the homestead. This rock also is seen to have a nuclear family whereby the father (Ngeso) being the middle stone followed by the bulky Mikayi (first wife), then Nyachira (second wife) followed by Reru (third wife) and further in front they have the child which is representing Simba (which is the house for the first born boy in the homestead). From a long time, this stone has been a sacred place for the villagers to worship, and continues to be used to-date.
Simbi Nyaima
Simbi Nyaima means the village that sank. Simbi Nyaima is actually a crater lake a few kilometers from the shores of Lake Victoria. The Luo attach great importance to the site because of the legendary story. It is said that the people of Simbi were celebrating their success at the chief’s home. An old woman appeared at the scene looking for shelter and food. But the chief threatened to beat her
up if she stayed. She was forced to leave and one lady sympathized with her and gave her food and a warm bath. She advised the kind lady to leave the village with all her children and husband. No sooner had they left than a heavy storm swept the whole village and it sank. The locals believe it happened in the olden days.
Rock Art Paintings (Mfangano-Rusina Islands)
Mfangano Island is known for its ancient rock art, possibly 2,000 years old and thought to have been created by early forager-hunters, the Twa people. The Twa people, also known as Batwa or pygmies, have been described as the forgotten tribe who live in the Great Lakes region of Africa. Three sites on Mfangano Island have legends attached to them; one or even two of the sites are still in use. The art in the sites comprises almost solely of sets of concentric circles in two or all three of the colours red, white and black. The paintings are typical of what is sometimes termed “Twa” art that stretches from northern Kenya in a broadening trail southwards to spread across Africa from Northern Mozambique to Angola, and to cease north of the Zambezi River. The islands are also a bird watcher’s paradise. The Abasuba Community Peace Museum is also one of the must see attractions. The museum has a beautiful community centre, museum gallery and a communal library.
Ikhonga Murwi -Crying Stone
This Mother Nature’s marvel stone is seen to be “crying” all the time, even in dry season. Found along the Kakamega-Kisumu highway this historical monument is associated with good harvest by the inhabitants of this region.
Songhor
The 78 acre site is a Miocene site dating back to 19 million years ago, with evidence of a large variety of animals living here. The fossil hominoids collected from this site range from small to bigger apes. There is enough evidence that the Proconsul Africanus lived at this site and so far eight species of hominids have been identified.

Lifestyle Model
PRIYAN SOLANKI How did your modelling journey begin? From when I was little, I admired models and hoped that one day I would get there. But it was when I was doing my A-levels, when a fashion designer suggested that I had a good physique for modelling. So they invited me to one of their shows at the Bomas of Kenya. In the designer’s next show, I was one of the models who appeared on the runway. I was 17 years-old when I first appeared on a runway. Go Places on Friday, March 6, 2020, welcomed a new fashion and lifestyle ambassador, high fashion Kenyan model Priyan Solanki. Priyan will showcase the different men’s fashion lines that Go Places is working with. In addition, he will have a column on Go Places Magazine and e-newsletter to advice men on grooming and also share his modelling and fashion expertise with young men. But just who is Priyan Solanki? I am a 22 year old high fashion model, actor and Pharmaceutical student at the United States International University (USIU). I represented Kenya in Poland and brought home the title Mister Supranational Kenya in 2019. I was also recognised as the Best Stylish Male Personality by The Asian Weekly Achievers Awards’ (TAWAA) 2020. Another platform that has recognised my modelling expertise is the Kenya Fashion Awards which crowned me as the model of the year in 2018. East FM (Kenyan radio station) also recognised me as the Social Star of the year in 2019.

How comes you chose to pursue a degree in Pharmacy? I have always had a passion for health and fitness. And as a model, I believe I can reach and influence a large number of people to lead a healthy, drugfree and crime-free lifestyle. You have worked with top brands like zopo and major shows like Samantha Bridal Wedding Expo. How did you manage to bring them on board? I believe that I have a great portfolio. Therefore, when your work is good, it speaks for you. However, breaking the ice was not easy. To build a great career in modelling, I had to have a high work-ethic and be very disciplined. I have to keep my body in good shape and stick to a strict diet. How do you prepare for a modelling show? I go to the gym every morning from 5:30 to 7:30am. I must also stick to a keto and lowcarbohydrate diet. Tell us a little bit about your acting I can’t say much about that but what I can say that I am currently taking part in local programs.
Now that you are still in school, how do you strike a balance between school, modelling and acting? At USIU, the schedule is very flexible. Meaning that you can choose the timings of your classes according to your preference. Therefore, when I am free, that is when I go for a modelling or acting rehearsal. Once you finish school, which line of career will you follow between modelling, acting and pharmacy? I cannot be able to say that for sure at the moment. But I shall pursue Pharmacy and continue modelling and acting part time. Because something like modelling is a hobby. So I shall use my platform as a model to create change and influence especially the young people to practice a healthy lifestyle. What are the best parts about your job as a model? I enjoy the love, the nice comments, the gifts that I get from my fans. I also like the fact that I get to travel different places and countries – this enables me to meet new people and learn new cultures. I also enjoy trying out different trendy outfits. What are some of the challenges that you experience as a model? Sometimes I get critiqued by people who are not happy with what I am doing. But that does not weigh me down and it encourages me to stand taller because every day is a learning experience. I thank my parents
because they have really supported me since I began pursuing my modelling career. They have always encouraged me to pursue my talent. In your bio, you say that in your free time you like to give back to the community. Which projects have you undertaken so far to ensure that you give back? Every one Sunday of the month I go to Shri Satya Sai temple on Waiyaki way for charity or the Thika School for the blind. This gives me a different perspective of life and keeps me grounded and strengthens my will power and self-drive in giving a helping hand to anyone needing help. I use such platforms to mentor the youth and share my knowledge with them. Because if I can do it, they can also do it. What advice would you give a person your age or younger that wants to pursue modelling? I would tell them to be themselves. Always put aside some time to work and grow your talent and eventually you will start to reap big from it. Also, do not waste your time in clubbing and taking drugs. Instead, use your time to make money from your talent, make sure it is something respectful. Who is your inspiration? I draw my inspiration from Canadian model and actor Nick Bateman. Nick has successfully managed to strike a career and family balance, and that is what I am striving to do each and every day.

Real Estate is currently in a timeframe we would like to call favorable especially in the Kenyan market as it has more benefits on stocks, mutual fund or bonds. Too often are the times we miss the gap. Investment is long term as the value of the property appreciates with time. So, when it comes to investing in real estate here in Kenya, the second-best time to buy – other than when markets are down – is the time whenever one thinks of real estate from an investment option. That is the right time. Favorable market conditions for buying / investing in real estate are what any wise investor looks for to make the right investment decision. Most people hope for better jobs, making more money, traveling the world and so much more that we forget putting money in Real Estate can yield a far much great reward that will appreciate every new decade. It is a strategy for building wealth for the future. With that said, it all down’s to why then should I invest? Here Are 4 Reasons Why
IT APPRECIATES IN WORTH AND IN WEALTH

IT PROVIDES EQUITY STOCKPILE
Most people in Kenya purchase property with a down payment with the balance through debt financing. The principal amount is then paid gradually more hastily towards the end of amortization period which is not such a bad thing. Quite the strategy of paying off debt without much pressure. Think about it!
The National Association of Realtors reports a 6% appreciation in worth level per year. This means it has a foreseeable cashflow. A well planned real estate in Kenya should make available a 6% or greater cash flow after mortgage payments and operating expenses have been done. In Summary, no other option other than real estate provides the best long-run LEVERAGE IS APPLICABLE investment over the course of modern It is probable to use borrowed capital history. By Rizwan Charania Head Teaching Professional & TPI Golf Fitness Coach at the RC Golf Academy
GOOD COURSE MANAGEMENT SAVES STROKES What is the definition of Course Management? The first piece of advice is to know your level of play and set your strategy accordingly. For example, an 18 handicap golfer ideally would like to have a par putt on each hole, but a handicap or Pro would like a birdie putt on each hole. The strategies here would be very different. Here are my 5 best tips on how to improve your course management: 1. Invest in a Distance Measuring device to help determine exactly how far obstacles and targets are. This will also help your distance control on each club. This will help especially when playing a new course. 2. Don’t be a Hero! If in trouble always look for the safest option back to the fairway. 3. Know the Rules! Having good knowledge of the rules can be used to your advantage to shave off strokes. 4. Have a few putts on the practice green before a round to give you a great feel for the speed of the greens. This will help avoid the dreaded 3 or 4 putt. 5. Stay hydrated on the course and carry a snack in your bag. It’s easy to drop shots later in the round due to fatigue or loss of energy.

The Premier League has been left in limbo after the deferment of the season until April 30th at the soonest. Representatives from each of the 20 clubs held a crisis meeting on Thursday 19th March to make plans for the rest of the season. Head League authorities have been gathering medical counsel and will put forward a few solutions to the 20 clubs, with point by point budgetary and sporting ramifications. All in all, as the clubs plot a way forward, what are the options? The most drastic choice, would be to wipe clean the entire season from the record books. This would rule out a title champion, qualification for Europe, relegation and promotion for clubs, and
the new 2020/21 would start without any preparation. PFA CEO Gordon Taylor said finishing the season would be cruel to league leaders Liverpool, as well as other teams who have had a good run - including Sheffield United, who are at present on course to make it to the Europa League in their first season back in the top flight. The Premier League will need the decision on the remainder of the league to be unanimous - similar to the choice to suspend the season until April 3. Be that as it may, if contradictions do persist, 66% of clubs - 14 - are required to consent to any change.
formula 1: Season to start on 3rd may Formula 1 has brought forward its mid year shutdown, and extended it, following a delay to the start of the season. It has been stretched out from 14 days to 21 days over two months, as teams attempt to adjust to the difficulties introduced by coronavirus while permitting greater adaptability for the schedule. The shutdown, which means teams must stop all race and vehicle related activity, happens in August. However, it has now been moved to April. The change to a three-week shutdown before end of April opens up August for races, which F1 boss Ross Brawn believes is a solid chance. The 2020 season is set to begin on 3rd May in Zandvoort.
