FOREWORD CS NAJIB BALALA’S FOREWORD FOR GO PLACES MAGAZINE (JUNE - JULY ISSUE) The Corona virus pandemic has impacted the global economy on a scale and magnitude unprecedented in modern times. Our economy and the tourism sector in particular has not been spared. As a Ministry, we have not been resting on our laurels but taking the necessary steps to ensure that the industry stays afloat. Below are some of the activities we have been doing to get through.

Since the pandemic struck, the Ministry has held a total of four webinars so far to engage stakeholders in seeing how we can maneuver in this pandemic.

One of the webinars under the banner ‘Covid-19: Leap Forward’ brought together over 500 stakeholders to listen and interact with 6 local and international tourism experts who made compelling presentations on the way forward for Kenyan tourism. The major highlight of the webinar was the focus on domestic and regional tourism as the first step in reviving the tourism sector which contributes to about 10% of the country’s GDP. The Wildlife webinar under the theme ‘Covid 19: Sustainability and Remodeling of Wildlife’ brought together over 700 participants and Public-Private Partnerships took the centre stage in discussion. Public-private partnerships are key in boosting wildlife tourism and conservation. Unity of purpose between NGOs, communities, conservancies and the private sector to carve the way forward for the sector came out as a major factor.

The third webinar dubbed ‘Covid-19 preparing for tourism recovery’ brought together local and international tourism industry professionals to discuss the measures the tourism sector will take for recovery post Covid-19. The highlight of the webinar was the rooting by the Ministry for a tax deferment so that entrepreneurs can inject money into their businesses and the establishment of a tourism recovery credit scheme that is meant to cushion the industry and ensure that we retain as many jobs as possible.

The fourth webinar dubbed ‘Covid-19 conversations towards restarting Kenya’s MICE sector’ focused on how the MICE industry can attract business post Covid. Kenya has over 40,000 associations which the newly formulated Kenya National Convention Bureau can take advantage of instead of solely focusing on big meetings.

We have also established the National Tourism and Hospitality Protocols Taskforce that will develop guidelines in response to Covid-19 pandemic to support tourism operations. The government had earlier announced the gradual reopening of tourism establishments starting with restaurants and eateries. These establishments must comply with the protocols laid down by the Ministry of

Health. To make it easy for them, we have lowered the cost of Covid-19 testing to Kshs.1,000 per staff, no charges on the compliance permit issued upon inspection for reopening, and inspection will be conducted within 24 hours of submitted applications that have fulfilled all the requirements. The Taskforce will therefore help fasttrack the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the establishments.

We would also like to thank H.E The President for featuring the Ministry in the 8-point economic stimulus programme.

The Ministry was awarded Kshs.2billion to give as soft loans to hotels and related establishments through the Tourism Finance Corporation, Kshs.1billion to engage 5,500 community scouts under Kenya Wildlife Service, and Kshs.1billion to 160 community conservancies.

Finally, the ban on single-use plastics took effect on 5th June 2020. This means that single-use plastics of any kind be it plastic bottles, plates, spoons, forks etc. are not allowed into national parks, beaches, forests and conservation areas. We therefore urge all stakeholders to jointly work towards the full implementation of the ban.

FOREWORD LEVERAGING DIGITAL PLATFORM, WAY TO KEEP DESTINATION ALIVE

The lockdown measures placed by governments across the globe as a result of the covid-19 pandemic has restricted travel and movement of people, posing a blow to the tourism and travel sector.

Keeping the world and travelers engaged and connected to the Magical Kenya destination during this period has been critical. Consumption of travelrelated media has increased and consumers are looking out for information on various channels driven largely by social media, travel-specific online media channels or User Generated Content.

With people under lockdown, the consumption of content has seen phenomenal growth. Netflix for example, has seen its customer base grow to about 75% while Internet use is at an all-time high of over 70%. There has also been increase of data usage locally in Kenya of about 70%.

This is a clear indication that technology and specifically digital will play a pivotal role in destination marketing during , pre recovery and in the recovery phase . Optimal benefits will be achieved by focussing on captive and engaging content preparation, strong visual content, Storydriven content and shareable content.

Impact can be achieved through the use of live content targeted to varying audiences in different traveler groups and markets. It is then crucia that this is measured and monitored as audience preference changes so that the changing needs are addressed in the content served.

Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) has launched a virtual Safari live stream campaign to showcase game safaris, birding, aspects of conservation among other diverse experiences in some of the parks and reserves across the country via Magical Kenya digital platforms.

The two-month long livestreaming campaign will showcase Laikipia, Samburu, Mt Kenya/ Aberdares, Amboseli, Tsavo East and West, Chyulu Hills, Masai Mara and Watamu. This will allow global , local and regional audiences to interact with the diversity of

Kenya These efforts have seen an increase in engagement and is keeping conversations about the destination alive during this time.

Our recent webinar on making digital work was also geared towards sensitizing our industry players on the need to engage their audiences and remain with them for the success of their business during this period and even after the Covid-19 pandemic.

FOREWORD MAGICALKENYA WILL EMERGE STRONGER AFTER THE CRISIS Jambo dear readers.

The effects of COVID-19 have been felt far and wide.

But perhaps no industry has faced a more pronounced impact than the tourism industry. As the country’s tourism reels from the pandemic, the industry’s focus is on future plans post the crisis and through the recovery. I believe in the midst of every challenge lies great opportunities.

Harnessing the positives during this particular period will be key for the industry to re-emerge even stronger.

History has taught us that most times crises become a catalyst for innovation and long-term change. Kenya is a blessed country in terms of its diversity in tourism product offerings. I am confident the diverse tourism offerings will play a key role in the recovery of the industry and in ensuring the destination remains a top global tourist destination.

It is encouraging to note that the hospitality sector is one of the first economic sectors to be reopened where restaurants and eateries are gradually reopening in line with a strict set of health, safety and hygiene protocols.

This coupled with the stimulus package recently announced by H.E the President of the Republic of Kenya for the industry highlights the government’s continued support for the industry during this difficult period.

As an industry we continue to engage with government agencies and trade associations to keep abreast with information and benefit from shared learnings from countries that are further along in the recovery process.

This pandemic has meant that most people’s dreams of exploring the country have been put on hold. However, I would not want to view this as a lost opportunity, but rather, as a postponed chance to keep the dream alive by planning for the future. This is the time to dream of MagicalKenya more than ever. We need to continue embracing our most immediate travelers in the domestic Kenya market and in the regional Africa market as the focal point for the industry’s’ recovery journey even as we closely monitor other source markets and the aviation sector that are likely to offer ‘first traveler’ opportunities.

Having said this we are aware that international travel will still experience a slump for some of time. But this is not to say that we will not focus on the international travelers.

We will continue to ensure that Kenya keeps its strong brand name and image on the international tourism map.

It would to be a wasted opportunity for the industry to come out of the crisis without improvement in the quality of products it offers. I believe that this crisis has provided ample time for players to review their business models

and products with the aim of ensuring that their business is able to survive through the crisis and through the recovery period. With the diversity on product offering by MagicalKenya I am certain that there will be something for everyone wishing to visit our country to experience its magic.

Apart from the traditional products such as the safari tours and beaches stays which still remain among the best in the world, the industry has been keen in developing and discovering new authentic and tailor-made products.

This is a difficult period for sure, however, it will come to pass. In the meantime the priority is to ensure that we all stay safe, as we ensure the destination remains top of mind amongst our domestic, regional and global travelers.

We have also been presented with an opportunity to pull together as an industry. Let us all observe measures put in place to curb the spread of the virus.

FOREWORD TIME TO RE-IMAGINE KENYA’S LOCAL MANUFACTURING POTENTIAL As the world grapples with effects of COVID19 pandemic, what lessons have you learnt as a Kenyan? What opportunities have been presented by the pandemic?

Well. Globally, even as the pandemic continues to bite, nations and companies alike have had to readjust and infuse extraordinary measures to respond to the pandemic as every country, region and continent strive to contain the spread of the virus and, balance the same with a human health and sustenance. The world economy has literally been “crippled “by Corona Virus.

In Kenya, just like the rest of the world, the pandemic has brought key sectors of the economy to a halt, and according to the Economic Survey Report 2020 issued by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, an immediate rebound of the economy is only realistically expected in the year 2021,assuming that countries around the world are on equal footing with efforts to contain the spread; also with the assumption that the weather will remain favorable for normal agricultural production in Kenya.

The most affected sectors include the flower and fresh produce industry, tourism, hospitality and transport sectors. Traditional markets and supply chains have been disrupted, constraining free flow of goods and services especially import of some raw materials from pandemic hit countries.

Supporting value addition initiatives and the continued use of the “Made in Kenya” brand mark is expected to spur demand for locally manufactured products thereby accelerating economic growth, creating jobs and reducing poverty in the long run.

With this mark, Brand.KE hopes to drive global competitiveness for locally manufactured products and build perceptions around the country brand as a home of authentic, unique and high-quality products.

This association of authenticity and high quality is what we want our consumers to feel whenever they come across a product that is made in Kenya, and that bears the Made in Kenya Mark.

This means interruptions in global supply chains with limited exports and imports due to various containment measures imposed by individual countries across the world to contain the spread of the Virus. It is an opportunity for Kenya as a country to harness domestic resources and intellect not only to help fight the spread of the Virus, but to also fill the demand gap of manufactured products. This is also an opportune time for Kenyans to re-imagine Kenya and to pride in what is truly Kenyan and therefore promote locally manufactured products.

I am happy that we have so far made significant progress in rallying local manufacturers to adopt the Brand Mark.

We will continue to work with them, including those who are locally producing items ranging from pharmaceuticals, reagents, nasal and pharyngeal swab sticks, personal protective gear (PPE), ICU beds, ventilators and, infra-red cameras and handheld thermometer guns.

It is time for Kenyans to passionately embrace what is truly Kenyan!

President Uhuru Kenyatta in his recent announcement of a Sh53.7 billion eight-point economic stimulus programme to help fix the unfolding economic crisis, singled out manufacturing, SME and Agriculture as among the 8 key sectors prioritized to jumpstart the economy. He has also urged all Kenyans to support everything Kenyan to work towards self-sustainability.

WE SHALL TRAVEL AGAIN Tourism plays a vital role as a source of revenue for governments around the world. These revenues account for about 9.5% of their Gross Domestic Product and a similar share of human resource in the sector. Currently, the tourism sector in Kenya and as replicated around the world has been hard hit by COVID19(Corona Virus). While tourism involves travel to destinations and human interactions thereof, the corona virus pandemic in the world has limited the primary functions that encompass travel.

Governments across the world have provided guidelines on how to stop the spread of the virus which include but not limited to staying/working from home, minimizing social interactions and movement, hand washing and sanitizing. Social distancing and local and international movement restrictions especially have had a ripple effect on tourism earnings which has occasioned some businesses that directly tap from tourism to come to a grinding halt, shut down and lay off their employees.

According to The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) tourism is one of the most affected

by COVID-19, estimating that in 2020 global international tourist arrivals could decline between 20-30% from an estimated growth forecast of 3-4% in January 2020. As afore stated, this should happen while observing strict guidelines of social distancing, hand washing, sanitizing and wearing of masks for both visitors and staff while in KWS premises across the country.

The National Museums of Kenya was closed to the public in early March due to the Covid 19 pandemic. It is during this period that we have undertaken practical digital tools to connect with you our visitors at home so as to keep you abreast and engage with our digitized collections of art, history and science via the Google arts and culture App or website. We encourage you to explore our Museums to your satisfaction and visit us virtually through our website and social media pages.

Developments during this period As decreed by the Government of Kenya on the 100 million stimulus project for artists, National Museums of Kenya under the instructions of our parent Ministry - The Ministry of Sports, Culture and Heritage is involved in adjudicating and working with visual artists nationwide. This project is meant to build strong partnerships with a view to cushion our creative industries during and post Covid-19 crisis.

NMK is excited to be part of the neighbours working closely with Kenya Forestry Service in the restoration of John Michuki Memorial Park as a much needed green space in Nairobi.

Plans are still underway for the construction of the proposed National art gallery, to be located in the Nairobi National Museum. The National Art Gallery will focus on visual arts and give a storyline of Kenyan art from prehistory and traditional to the modern times.

Jacinta was appointed in October 2019 as the National Coordinator heading the secretariat setting up the Kenya National Convention Bureau, as a brand-new entity.

Under her leadership, KNCB is working to be the leader in coordinating all the MICE activities in the destination and to position Kenya as a preferred MICE destination aiming at ranking 2nd in Africa by 2022. Previously, Jacinta had served as the Director of Marketing at the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) for 6 years where she was charged with the responsibility of leading Kenya’s global tourism marketing strategy.

In 2016, she was the Acting CEO of the KTB for 11 months. She has over 20 years’ experience in Destination Marketing & Management. Recent recognitions: 2018 –Top 3 Women Leaders in Tourism in Africa (Africa Tourism Partners, in Ghana), 2017 –Africa’s Top 100 Most influential Women in Tourism (ATC in Nigeria & Ministry of Tourism, Kenya) & East Africa’s Top Woman in Public in Tourism (CEO Global Magazine, South Africa).

It’s with a lot of nostalgia that I took this trip to Lake Magadi, the last time I was here I was with a visitor from UK who was retracing her Grandpas footprints in 1920’S. She was armed with the images of how the Magadi soda plant looked like then, their mode of transport and their house in Kajiado which 4 years ago was the residence of the District commissioner it was a very interesting day.

We approached Magadi from Kiseriani Corner Baridi and we had a stopover at Corner Baridi, Ngong Hills and Champagne Ridge.

2 cups all purpose flour ¼ cup sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt ½ chocolate chips

• 2 cups milk • 2 large eggs • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted and cool • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract • 1 ½ cups of blueberries

1. In a bowl, add flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt and whisk to combine.

2. Beat the eggs extensively, until they form bubbles and heat the milk in the microwave until lukewarm. In a separate bowl, melt your chocolate chips until its melted. add the milk, eggs, melted butter and vanilla and whisk to combine.

3. Mix the dry ingredients and the wet ingredients in the same bowl. Whisk until the batter is smooth and frothy.

4. Use a tablespoon of butter to grease the pan or spray with cooking spray. Use a paper towel to wipe off the butter. Pour 1/4 or 1/3 cup of batter (depending on how big you want your pancakes) into the pan and gently spread into a circle shape using the measuring cup.

5. In the mean time preheat a skillet over medium heat and coat it with cooking spray or oil. You want to make sure that it’s very hot before you start cooking your pancakes.

6. Pour batter straight from blender onto skillet until desired size of pancakes is reached and cook until the edges have set and bubbles begin to form on the tops of the pancakes, about 3 minutes. Using a spatula, flip and cook for another 2 minutes.

Repeat until all the batter is gone, making sure to coat your skillet again with oil between each batch.

7. Top with honey, Blueberry and Strawberry.

This has however changed with the onset of social distancing and the ban on social gathering in order to minimize infections arising from COVID-19. NMK in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Intel Corporation (Intel), embarked on a long-term strategic initiative to digitize the Worldfamous collections from Earth Sciences Department, starting with Archaeology and Paleontology a process that started in 2017. The first phase involved digitization of a selected number of Kenya’s premier fossils and culturally significant artifacts, the creation of an open access digital database, and an interactive website (“virtual museum”) which will be hosted on the AWS Cloud.

Digital Divide Data (DDD), a non-profit enterprise with expertise in digitization of cultural heritage collections that has partnered with NMK on this initiative.

These collections are a reflection of Kenya’s heritage and the world’s prehistory through the ages. The searchable digital archive will not only be of immense value to researchers worldwide, but will also make our evolutionary history and culture more accessible to the younger generations which will foster a deeper and richer understanding of our heritage. Most importantly, the project will deliver superior value of the collections to future generations through the creation of cloud based digital archive platform for NMK.

NMK has also initiated online interactive activities for children through the Education department to keep the school going children busy at the comfort of their homes.

NMK has also partnered with Google by initiating an online platform (Google arts and culture) through which the public can access images of artworks housed by different Museums across the world. The purpose of the platform is to enable users to practically tour partner museums’ galleries, explore physical and contextual information about artworks, and compile their own virtual collection. Google signed a partnership agreement with The National Museum of Kenya to showcase Kenyan culture through this platform by digitizing the museum’s collections. The google team from the United Kingdom was in charge of setting up and foreseeing the project’s success.

The National Museums- Culture and Heritage Department and Google Arts and Culture successfully digitized 9,702 objects and 500 paintings on the Google Art and Culture online platform. Aberdare National Park The park is located about 100 km north of Nairobi and stretches over wide terrains. The Park covers the higher areas of the Aberdare Mountain Ranges of central Kenya. Animals easily observed in the park include; the Black Rhino, Leopard, Baboon, Black and White Colobus monkey and Sykes monkey.

Amboseli National Park Amboseli National Park is located in Loitoktok District within the Great Rift Valley; 269 Km

from Nairobi. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to free-ranging elephants, meet the Maasai and get spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro (the highest mountain in the Africa).

Hell’s Gate National Park Hell’s Gate National Park lies to the south of Lake Naivasha in Kenya, Northwest of Nairobi. Some of the frequently observed animal species include lions, leopards, and cheetahs. There are over 100 species of birds in the park, including African buffalo, zebra, eland, hartebeest and Thomson’s gazelle.

Lake Nakuru National Park

The park lies 140km Northwest of Nairobi. Its ecosystem is surrounded by mainly wooded and bushy grasslands. The park supports a wide ecological diversity with Flamingos and other water birds being the major attractions of the area and 56 different species of mammals including the white rhino and buffaloes.

Maasai Mara National Park The Maasai Mara National Park covers 1530km and lies southwest of the country. It borders the Serengeti Park to the south, the Siria escarpment to the west and Maasai pastoral ranches to the North and East. It is famous for its exceptional population of Big Cats and the annual migration of wildebeest and other grazers from the Serengeti every year from July to October.

Meru National Park Meru National Park is located in the east of Meru 350 km from Nairobi. Covering an area of 87,044 hectares, it has abundant rainfall and a wide range of wildlife such as elephants, hippos, lion, cheetah leopard, black rhinos, some rare antelopes and more than 300 species of birds.

Mt. Kenya National Park Mt. Kenya National Park is located to the east of the Great Rift Valley, about 175km North-East of Nairobi. At 5,199m Mt. Kenya is the second highest

Samburu National Reserve The Samburu National Reserve is located on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River. It was one of the two areas in which conservationists George Adamson and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness made famous in the best selling book and award winning movie ‘Born Free’. All three big cats, Lion, Cheetah and Leopard as well as elephants, buffalos and hippos are found here.

Malindi Marine National Park & Reserves Malindi Marine National Park & Reserves is located in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Kenya. The park’s attractions include coral reefs, turtles and dolphins and over 300 species of fish including the Barracuda, Sharks, Angel Fish, Surgeon Fish Lobsters, Crabs, Clams, Octopus and Star Fish.

Beaches North Coast Mombasa

Tsavo East National Park Tsavo East National Park is one of the oldest and largest parks in Kenya at 11,747 square kilometers.

The park lies to the east of the Nairobi - Mombasa road, offering a vast and untapped arena of arid bush, which is washed by the azure and emerald meandering of Galana River. Guarded by the limitless lava reaches of Yatt a plateau and patrolled by some of the largest elephant herds in Kenya.

Tsavo West National Park Tsavo West covers an area of 9,065 square kilometers and is generally referred to as the “Land of lava Springs and Man-eaters”. It is located on Southeast of Kenya, 240km from Nairobi along the western side of the MombasaNairobi highway. Major wildlife attractions include Elephants, Rhinos, Hippos, Lions, Cheetah, Leopards, Buffalos, diverse plant and bird species including the threatened corncrake and the threatened Basra Reed Warbler.
