FOREWORD There has been continued growth in the Kenya Tourism in 2018. As we move towards the years, which is also the peak season for the Tourism business and sector as a whole, we hope that you have explored at least one local tourism attraction site. Kenya’s brand visibility begins with our experience as locals before attracting foreign tourists. First, all the good things we have been gearing up for this years as a Ministry are now here. The month of August and September is a packed one with remarkable events that also seeks your involvement. World Tourism Day 2018 Celebrations will be held on the 27th September with the theme being Tourism and the digital transformation. As a nation, it is our job to work together towards preserving our rich and diverse culture. With the FIFA World Cup behind us, we would like to bring your attention to The World Cup of Wildlife, which you would know as the Wildebeest Migration. This 8th wonder of the world that takes place in July through to October in Maasai Mara is marvel you should not miss. The Ushanga Kenya Exhibition and Sale is slated for 28th September 2018. Entertainment Tourism is going a notch higher with different artistes from around the world coming to Kenya for different artistes from around the world coming to Kenya for different events and activities. The maiden Terminal Music weekend, for instance, is a step in the right direction as it gives Kenyan artistes the same opportunities as the international ones to share the same stage. We are delighted for Kenya being chosen by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) as the hosts of the 2020 IAAF World Athletics U20 Championships. The U18’s held in 2017 in Nairobi was a major boost to the growth of the business and the country. In the same way, this new opportunity will protect us further ahead in our vision as a country to become Africa’s financial hub.

FOREWORD Welcome to Magical Kenya with another exciting new season set to commence in August and September 2018. We are pleased that the annual Wildebeest Migration has begun and is at its peak. This 8th Wonder of the World spectacle has already attracted hundreds of international tourists from around the world and many, many more visitors are expected as this great spectacle continues through to October. Tourist arrivals to Kenya increased by 6.1% during the first quarter of the year, signaling better tidings for the sector at the start of 2018. Total international arrivals for January to March 2018 by air and sea closed at 237,944 compared to 224,233 in the same period in 2017. During the period under review, arrivals through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) dropped by 1.4% to 192,958 compared to 195,630 in 2017 same period. Moi International Airport Mombasa (MIAM) received 43,315 visitors, compared to 27,697 in 2017 same period, reflecting a growth of 56.4%. Arrivals by cruise ship for the period grew by 84.4% to 1,671 compared to 906 in 2017 same period. Business and conference arrivals stood at 27,561, contributing 11% of the total arrivals within the review period. We are optimistic that visitors from International markets will continue to grow year-on-year with the positive impact we have recently experienced. Some of these positive recognitions have placed Kenya as a preferred destination of choice from a leading United Kingdom (UK) travel firm, Kuoni Worldwide, that has named Kenya among the top 25 destinations in the world. According to the ‘Kuoni Worldwide Trends Report 2018’, Kenya has risen from the 23rd to 19th placed destination owing to growing interest by tourists in areas such as Samburu, Tsavo, and Amboseli. Kenya has surpassed Tanzania, Seychelles, Spain, and Australia in this latest ranking. Another notable recognition was JKIA’s ranking as the best airport in Africa and 38th globally in the recent worldwide rankings 2018 carried out by Airhelp. Furthermore Lake Elementaita was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site after earlier being listed as a Ramsar site (wetland of international importance) and is regularly home to millions of lesser flamingos and also an important stop over for migratory birds. The World Travel Awards 2018 (WTA) are around the corner and many of our Kenyan Hospitality, Travel and Tourism related companies have been entered for nominations in various categories. These awards serve to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the global travel and tourism industry. The WTA has revealed that its Africa and Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony will be held at Durban International Convention Centre, South Africa on 6th October 2018. Hospitality leaders from across the region will gather for the red-carpet gala ceremony to see who

10 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

amongst them has been voted the best in their category. We urge all local, regional and international clients to vote for your favorite establishments. The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) has rolled out an up-skilling training program targeted at travel agents in Nigeria who are making the transition from ticketing agents to travel agents. The training programme entailed a two-day training workshops that was held in the cities of Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt. In the coming months, we look forward to some International and regional hospitality and tourism forums and events. These include the Africa Hotel Investment Forum 2018 (AHIF) in Nairobi from 2-4 October and the SKAL World Congress 2018 in Mombasa from 17th-21th October. We invite you to join us on 3rd–5th October 2018 at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) in Nairobi for the 8th edition of Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE), the leading professional travel trade gathering place in East and Central Africa for trade networking and exploring business opportunities in Kenya. The most awaited and popular Chefs Delight Awards programme will begin in August. This one of a kind unique culinary program brings together over 100 top rated restaurants to compete to be the best in their cuisine category, voted by their own regular diners. On behalf of myself and the Kenya Tourism Board, I wish all the readers an exciting great migration season and a superb August - September 2018 season ahead.

FOREWORD Jambo and a warm welcome to Magical Kenya, one of the world’s most desired and authentic safari, business and leisure destination in Africa The onset of the most magnificent wildlife spectacle on earth is finally upon us. Dubbed the 8th Wonder of the World, the great wildebeest migration ushers in an exciting new season for Kenya’s tourism sector. This annual spectacular occurrence has already attracted hundreds of visitors from around the globe, to witness this natural breathtaking phenomenon within the world’s most famous game reserve, the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. The last two months have been really exciting for KTB as we intensified capacity building around our tourism products and experiences. These included various events and activities that brought together hundreds and thousands of enthusiasts to travel, participate and explore our beautiful country, Kenya. The events included the 62 km Machakos Mountain bike challenge, the 120 kilometres Great Rift Valley Challenge, Lake Turkana Cultural Festival with breathtaking views of Northern Kenya, the Lewa Marathon that was flagged off by the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta and which attracted over 1300 local, regional and international runners and over 5,000 spectators, all in aid of raising money for wildlife conservation. African Tennis players from 8 African countries which included Algeria, Benin and Cameroon, who participated in the Davis Cup Africa tournament in Nairobi, gave us the opportunity to share the Magical Kenya experience of a game drive through Nairobi National Park - the only national park in a city. We are proud to have launched our Tourism Information Center located at Kenya Coast Tourism Association’s office in Mombasa. The centre is equipped with interactive screens that enable access to an array of experiences available in the destination to visitors and Kenyans alike. Former U.S. President Barack Obama’s visit to Kisumu and his ancestral village, Kogelo in Siaya county as he returned to the land of his father’s heritage provided an opportunity for an array of local and international visitors to experience the diversity of attractions offered by the Lake Region Economic Bloc. The next few months will be even more exciting as the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife is set to host the inaugural Kenya Tourism Festival which will be a fusion

of Kenya’s rich cultural heritage and technology which is a major driver of modern travel. Through the Festival, Kenya will showcase its diverse and authentic tourism experiences to the world with an unprecedented week of tourism promotion. The Festival will commence with the World Tourism Day celebration on the 27th September and end on 5th October 2018. The week will see Kenya host the African Hotel Investment Forum 2018 between the 2nd and 4th October. KTB looks forward to hosting the premier travel exhibition in Africa, the Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) between the 3rd and 5th October 2018. Save the dates for this week-long experience as well as for 79th SKAL World Congress from 17th to 21st October. We appreciate the efforts of the private sector for their part in promoting and marketing our destination through various platforms that reach far and wide to attract visitors to our Magical land. We thank Go Places for their passion and continued support.

FOREWORD IT IS TIME TO MAKE COUNTIES MORE PROFITABLE Kenya is on the move as a result of devolution. One of the greatest tasks that the government faced after taking over power in 2013 was to successfully create county governance systems as enshrined in Kenya Constitution 2010. The law required immediate devolution of power and resources to 47 independent counties headed by Governors and monitored by the Senate. This was aimed at bringing governance closer to the people and boosting inclusivity. Despite slight teething problems experienced within the initial years, Counties have become the bedrock of Kenya’s development. All the 47 Counties can now operate as autonomous entities with each Governor exploring ways to make their County profitable for the benefit of its citizens. For instance, some Counties have come together to form regional economic blocs in order to collectively tackle challenges associated with trade and investment, while providing opportunities for integration. Economic blocs have been regarded as viable options in pursuing stronger trade agreements for counties with higher bargaining power, unified approach to trade and investment as well as easier inter-county integration. A case in point is the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) comprising of 13 counties that include Kisumu, Kisii, Siaya, Migori, Homa Bay, Vihiga, Kakamega, Nyamira, Bomet, Busia, Bungoma, Kericho and Trans Nzoia, which has taken off. Other Counties from North Rift and Coast have formed similar Economic blocs. All these efforts are geared towards making counties better. It is worth noting that all counties have unique competitive advantages ranging from location, available resources, and tourist attraction sites and so on. This shows that counties have immense potential to grow. It is now time for counties to reposition themselves and attract more investors. This can be achieved through branding. A brand borders on a promise that is delivered. It can be a product, a service or a concept that is publicly distinguished from other products, services, or concepts so that it can be easily communicated and marketed. A brand name is the name of the distinctive product, service, or concept. All our 47 counties are brands bearing distinct brand names, special attributes and unique locations.

then means that what matters most is how consumers perceive the brand and not necessarily what they think the brand is and what it promises. In other words, perceptions from consumers come first. Transforming counties to Brands will help them stand out, attract more investors and realize their maximum potential. Well branded counties will result to new markets, better and more developed cities and towns, improved service delivery, more trade and investment potential as well as improved living conditions for citizens. It is therefore critical for counties to position themselves as brands and use their unique attributes to leverage on business opportunities and development of infrastructure. Brand Kenya Board has rolled out a County Branding Index (CBI) project to help counties create a competitive identity to attract tourism and investments. This will accelerate the level of growth of both County and National brands. The Board believes, this will be a precursor of making counties more profitable. Finally, Kenya has been recognized as the 3rd most innovative economy in Sub-Saharan Africa, according to Global Innovation Index ranking. South Africa and Mauritius were ranked first and second respectively. Kenya’s performance was pegged on the level of development and continuous performance since 2011. Its greatest strengths were identified as access to credit, especially micro-finance loans, innovation linkages and export of creative services. Kenya continues to position itself as a globally competitive and transformative brand, standing out amongst its peers.

Ag. CEO, Brand Kenya Board Ms Floice Mukabana

Branding of any entity is important because it affects how the public and stakeholders perceive entities and defines whether they would want to associate with them. This

Let’s venture out of town… Anyone up for a day trip? Buckle up and come let’s cruise it down the KWS way! Tucked deep into the floor of the Great Rift Valley of Naivasha’s dusty town, Hells Gate National Park provides the ideal fun in the wild experience across all markets and age groups. Its convenient proximity, about 100km north-west of Nairobi, coupled with an excellent road network from Kenya’s capital makes it a great out of town adventure. Sprawling just 68 sq. km, the Park offers more than its size. From panoramic picnic sites, spectacular scenic views, abundant flora and fauna, towering cliffs, water gouged gorges, geothermal steams from Olkaria Geothermal power station located inside the park south-west of Naivasha, the park is a bundle of fun waiting to be explored. In a nutshell, the Great Rift outdoors offer Rock climbing, Game viewing, Hiking, Gorge walks, Cycling/biking, Team building grounds, Picnicking, Wedding venues, Corporate events/product launch venues, hot springs from the Olkaria geothermal power station and Camping – With a well-equipped sheltered area, shower rooms, water and pit latrines. The Park is largely characterized by diverse topography and geological rock formations. It is home to the lammergeyer, the largest and rare Eurasian bird of prey. Branded “A walk on the wild side’’ Hells Gate National Park allows walking and cycling activities guided by KWS security on the sprawling grasslands with well-maintained dust roads. The fact that the Park teems with hundreds of wild flora and fauna makes it ideal for game drives. Animals to see include; Zebra, eland, giraffe, buffalo, serval cat, hartebeest, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelle, klipspringer, antelope, lion, leopard and so much more. With an incredible record of over 103 bird species, the destination is ideal for bird lovers. A keen visitor is expected to spot not less than 25 different bird species in just a single day. The massive rock cliffs shelter thousands of unique insects and reptiles. The rock shelters also act as breeding grounds for most small animals.

14 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

You will not boast of having done bird identification if you have not perched your feet in the Mervyns Carnelley Raptor Hide, a unique bird viewing hide that incorporates a one-way window which allows visitors to view and take photos of the huge birds of prey at close proximity. The hide is located just above Endachata campsite. Adrenaline will remain to be just another grey area if you do not flex your muscles as you hoist yourself up the magnificent 25 meters tall Fischer’s Tower. Standing tall, the tower is a rugged mass of rock that is a remnant of the ancient volcano and named after a German explorer Gustav Fischer who visited in 1883. The rock offers a great climbing experience. The local Maasai community folklores allege that the rock is a figure of a chief’s daughter who turned around against the dictates of the Maa tradition to take one last look at her father’s compound before leaving to be married. There’s so much to learn about the rich Maasai culture from the Maasai people who live around the peripheries of the Park. All in a day’s work! FOREWORD

This year has been eventful for the National Museums of Kenya marked by many milestones for us in the last financial year. As we switch gears, we would like to implore you to take time to visit our various museums, sites and monuments across the country to learn, support and engage in recreational activities. In this issue, we will be highlighting the Uhuru Gardens, the largest memorial park in Kenya dedicated to the struggle for independence. It is a symbol of unity to Kenya as it reminds us of our birthplace. Kenya’s new flag was hoisted here and a major ceremony held upon attainment of independence on 12th December 1963. On the same day, the British Union jack was lowered marking the end of colonialism. It’s a landmark in Kenya’s political history as it commemorates the birth of a nation. I also urge you to visit our Snake Park at the Nairobi National Museum, where we have launched our Hall of Fishes and the Marine Aquarium. The exhibition prides itself with a collection of beautifully coloured salt water fish. The marine aquarium is facilitated through collaboration between the National Museums of Kenya and the Kenya Tropical Sea Life. It displays a diversity of fish inhabiting the Indian Ocean. It includes soft corals and fish dwelling in the coral reefs. It also includes sea urchins, sea anemones and starfish among others. As usual every holiday we have plenty of activities for children. We had our fun day on 11th August for children aged 5- 13 years. The day was filled with fun art and craft activities based on the museum’s collections and exhibitions, talks by artists and professionals and animated storytelling

16 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

by renowned storyteller, Wangari. Kindly contact us to find out how you can get involved. Our doors are open every day of the week including weekends and public holidays. Finally, Thimlich Ohinga was inscribed into the UNESCO world heritage list in Bahrain in June 2018. It is the 7th world heritage site in Kenya after Lamu, Mount Kenya, Kaya forests, Lake Turkana parks and Rift valley lakes of Bogoria, Nakuru and Elementaita. Built in the 14th century on a hill, Thimlich Ohinga is a complex surrounded by stone walls now partially covered under Savannah bush land. This is another great site to visit that is more than 550 years old and is of great historical value. This is one more attraction to add to your bucket list of visits in our great country. We look forward to your visit throughout the year at your nearest Museum Galleries and Historical sites. Karibuni!

The Mighty Giraffe

T

he saying ‘as tall as a giraffe’ is probably one of the most common similes you’ve ever heard of. The giraffe is undoubtedly the tallest animal on earth, but did you know this gentle giant is on an extinction alert? Biologists say that the giraffe population has reduced by over 40% in just 30 years. There are less than 100,000 giraffes in the wild and although park rangers across Africa try their best to protect these creatures, more than often the poachers always win.

There have been numerous efforts put in place to save giraffes from extinction including spreading awareness of the dangers of poaching, enacting a National Giraffe Day which occurs on the longest day of the year (June 21st), giraffe charities and more organizations dedicated to saving giraffes in the wild. The Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) is one such organization. Donations to GCF help park rangers get meals, enable the purchase of drones to track poachers, cover field costs and more.

There Are 4 Different Giraffe Species, I.e. The Southern Giraffe, Masai Giraffe, Reticulated Giraffe And The Northern Giraffe.

Masai giraffe The Masai giraffe aka Giraffa tippelskirchi is the largest and tallest of all species. They can grow up to 19.5 feet height and weigh up to 3,000 pounds.

48 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

Reticulated Giraffe The Reticulated Giraffe aka Giraffa reticulata’s coat pattern includes distinct uniform-colored spots and sharp edges which make it easy to spot. They mostly inhabit the savannah and open forests of Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia.

Northern giraffe The Northern giraffes consist of slightly over 5,000 individuals, which is the lowest count of giraffes. Its sub-species the Nubian (formerly Rothschild) giraffes are estimated to be slightly over 2,600 individuals only in the wild. They are found mostly in Kenya and Uganda others.

Southern Giraffe The Southern Giraffe aka Giraffa giraffe consists of 2 sub-species, the South African giraffe and the Angolan giraffe. Both of these dwell in countries towards the South of Africa, namely Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa.

Did you know? Giraffe spots are much like human fingerprints very distinct. Two giraffes may look similar, but are very different. Giraffes don’t make any sound. Scientists say that perhaps giraffes can’t produce enough airflow through their 4-meter-long trachea to create vocal vibrations and be able to make noises. The mystery is that when you observe them you will realize there is some form of communication, but we still don’t know how they do it. Giraffes spend most of their lives standing up. They give birth and sleep while standing up. Giraffes are professional power nappers. They sleep for a total of 5 to 30 minutes a day and only need 1 to 2 minute naps to keep them going. A giraffe’s neck cannot reach the ground. It has to spread its front legs awkwardly so as to kneel and drink water.

While the giraffe population in countries like Uganda and Kenya is decreasing, that of South Africa has drastically increased. This success is due to extensive conservation efforts by the country. South Africa has invested in protecting its game parks and reserves, while also encouraging tourism. These two efforts combined with highly trained rangers have helped immensely. What can you do to encourage giraffe conservation? Be vocal on the dangers of poaching and support game parks and giraffe conservation efforts in your area. In Kenya, support the giraffes by visiting them at the Giraffe Center & Giraffe Manor in Karen. The previous is home to a few Nubian (Rothschild) giraffes that are raised there and taken care of before being released into the wild. Visitors can pet the giraffes, feed them and come into close contact with them. At the Giraffe Manor, visitors get to mingle with the giraffes who poke their heads into the windows begging you for a small bite. All entry fees at Giraffe Center goes towards a giraffe fund. The Giraffe Centre is open from 9 AM to 5 PM, 7 days a week. Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com | 49

Controlling The Trajectory Of Your Ball Flight -By Rizwan CharaniaHead Teaching Professional & TPI Golf Fitness Coach at the RC Golf Academy

“One of the first things you learn about trajectory -- once you’ve become a reasonably good ball-striker -- is that moving the ball back in your stance will make the shot fly lower. That’s true, but it’s also crude. Play the ball back, and you hit it earlie r in your downswing arc, which can hurt your accuracy & distance control.” – Hank Haney The way I like to teach my students to control height is to adjust their swing speed. You can make a shot fly lower by slowing down. Swinging faster creates more backspin and therefore more height. One thing to be aware of is by swinging slower you may lose a little distance so the idea is to select one or even two extra clubs depending on the conditions.

High Launch

When I practice I like to start with a 7 iron and try hit it between 50-75 yards with a full swing just by controlling my swing speed. This is a great way to gain good rhythm and sequencing. Next time you are on the range, experiment hitting full swings and just vary the speed and see the ball flight change for you.

A space for relaxation Though urban in location, Uhuru Gardens has a variety of native flora and fauna of the Savannah woodland extending from Nairobi National Park and the vast Kapiti plains. Among the animals that can be sighted are warthogs, sykes and vervet monkeys as well as diverse bird species. The south-western end of the garden has a forest of relatively tall Acacia trees, while the open grassland is inter-spersed with short acacia trees and

bushes. Exotic tree species are found close to the monuments. Nairobi city has grown tremendously since its inception in the early part of the last century. Most of the open spaces within the estates have been taken up by buildings leaving only few spaces for relaxation. The open nature of the gardens, security, as well as proximity to the city center has made the park into an ideal meeting point for most people within Nairobi.

Discover Kenya’s largest memorial park

Uhuru Gardens National Monument is a unique memorial site in Kenya’s history. The site was the venue of the first hoisting of the Kenyan flag at midnight of the 12th of December and lowering of the Union Jack (British flag) on the midnight of 12th December, 1963. The value of the site is historical and this has in turn given it prominence hence enabling it to nurture educational, social, religious and economic values. The fig tree is considered to be sacred by most communities in Kenya, hence its reverence. It is also known to live for many years; hence making a good symbol to commemorate such a historic event. The olive tree was planted by His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta to mark the celebrations of Kenya’s 50 years after independence. The site is located along Langata road next to Wilson Airport. Uhuru is a Swahili word for independence and the park was given the name to commemorate Kenya’s struggle for independence.

The Fig tree

The fig tree was planted to mark the spot where our national flag was first hoisted and the Union jack was lowered. Coincidentally, as the Kenyan flag was being hoisted in Nairobi, the late Kisoi Munyao was hoisting the Kenyan flag at Point Lenana; the highest peak on Mt. Kenya. This was followed by a display of fabulous fireworks at Uhuru Gardens. After years of struggle for independence, through both armed struggle and political agitation, Kenya was free at last from British colonial rule.

Nature walks and picnics

A wide range of visitors come to the site for leisure walks along the nature trail and relaxation within the gardens.

BOOK REVIEW

HALF OF A YELLOW SUN GENRE: HISTORICAL FICTION Half of a Yellow Sun returns to a critical moment in the modern history of Nigeria, a time shortly after gaining their independence from Britain when, following a massacre of their people, the Igbo tribes of the southeast seceded and established The Republic of Biafra. Set primarily in Nsukka, Nigeria during the Nigeria Biafra War (1967–70), the book follows several characters and tells multiple stories without becoming unwieldy. The primary characters are Olanna, a daughter of a wellconnected man, who studied in England and lives with her boyfriend, Odenigbo, the university lecturer; Ugwu, the houseboy of Odenigbo; and Richard, a British man who came to Nigeria to write a book. Half of a Yellow Sun is based on the real events of the war and while the characters are not real, they are based on real people. The book deals with themes of unity, division, nationalism, colonialism, love, genocide, war, and redemption. Not only does it provide an Igbo perspective on the Nigeria-Biafra War, but it provides a deeply human perspective into the grey morality that often emerges during times of strife. This book is for anyone interested in historical fiction and if you haven’t read a book by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, then I recommend you start here. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a an award winning Nigerian novelist, writer of short stories, and nonfiction. She has written the novels Purple Hibiscus, Half of a Yellow Sun, and Americanah, the short story collection The Thing Around Your Neck (2009), and the book-length essay We Should All Be Feminists (2014).
