FOREWORD I Welcome all Go Places ™ readers to 2019 and urge them to continue experiencing Kenya’s Jewel-Tourism-in this new years. We are optimistic that Kenya will remain the preferred destination for both local and foreign tourists. The overall performance of the tourism sector in 2018 highlights an undeniable growth. As the 2018 Tourism Sector Performance Report has shown, our strides are growing stronger with 2 million plus arrivals last year and an expected increase in 2019. Kenya tourism earnings rose to Shs. 157 billion in 2018 due to the increased number of people visiting Magical Kenya. A total of 3.97 million bed nights were taken up by Kenyans in 2018 compared to the 3.64 million in 2017. Our gains in 2018 are attributed to the co-ordinated efforts between various arms of the government, led by the Ministry of Tourism & Wildlife, and our other tourism stakeholders in marketing Kenya as a destination of choice globally. In 2018, the country hosted various international conferences such as the African Union Ministerial SubCommittee on Tourism, 79th Skal Congress, Sustainable Blue Economy and Africa Hotel Investment Forum (AHIF). These conferences highlighted the fact that Kenya is not only a holiday destination, but a business and conference destination as well. The open border policy for Africans where they get Visas on arrival has helped boost intraAfrica travel. 68 global hotel brands set up shop in the country and we expect another 20 global hotel brands to come in the next 5 years. This is attributed to the ease of doing business in Kenya, which allowed international brand hotels to pick our country as a place to bring their business. This in turn has created employment opportunities for the people on Kenya.
We have just held a very successful first-ever Tourism Symposium on Transformation of the Beach Destination in Diani, Kwale County on 31st January, 2019. The symposium brought together both National and County governments, Hotel/Resort/Restaurant owners, investors, business leaders and associates, experts in various distinct fields and other distinguished stakeholders to brainstorm on how to to re-brand and transform the beach product. On behalf of the Ministry of Tourism & Wildlife i wish you all an amazing February-March season. Let’s continue to explore Magical Kenya. HON. NAJIB BALALA, EGH, CABINET SECRETARY MINISTRY FOR TOURISM & WILDLIFE
We look forward to the Magical Kenya Open Golf Championship from the 14th - 17th of March 2019. The government’s commitment of € 2.2 million for the event is set to attract international golfers, with the winner walking away with € 1 million. the event will be aired live across major sports channels, with an expected global reach of almost 500 million viewers. The attack on the Dusit D2 hotel complex has shown that Kenya is unbowed. We have continued to receive support for Magical Kenya post-attack from the international community. This is no longer a problem for one country, as it can happen anywhere in the world. It will not deter our resilience to showcase Kenya to the world.

FOREWORD Happy 2019 to all Go Places readers. We have another good year in our back pocket with the events that took place in 2018. There was positive growth in key international source markets including Africa. Visitor arrival statistics prepared by Tourism Research Institute (TRI) and recently announced by the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife showed as growth of 37.33% in 2018 over 2017. In actual arrival numbers, 2018 saw 2,025,206 arrivals versus 1,474,671 in 2017. Indeed a splendid performance in 2018 driven by the private sector tourism industry, the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) and with the full backing and support of the Kenya government. Africans travelling within Kenya has been made easier by the open border policy announced in 2018 by HE President Uhuru Kenyatta. This has enabled all African nationals to apply for their visas on arrival at their entry port in Kenya. We hope that this year more Africans will take this opportunity and promote intra-Africa travel. Domestic tourism also improved in 2018 with Kenyans occupying 3.9 million bed nights compared to 3.6 million in 2017. With initiatives such as Tembea Kenya Na Mimi ensuring that even Kenyans get to discover the hidden gems in their country. Kenya Wildlife Services records indicated that over 26,000 tourists alone climbed the country’s highest mountain, Mt. Kenya, last year up from 15,000 in 2017. This shows that Kenya has a lot more to offer visitors in terms of diversified experiences as they visit. The Kenyan government has continued to show its support to the tourism sector with various initiatives. This interagency support has enabled progress in the Tourism sector. The promotion of international flights to MagicalKenya is one key factor that has contributed to its growth. The maiden direct flight to New York City was a step in the right direction. Our national carrier Kenya Airways (KQ) was at the forefront ensuring the direct flight from Nairobi- New York City was a success. KTB’s strategy that entails product diversification and increased digital marketing activations is a way to open up new and exciting experiences within MagicalKenya.

We have kicked-off the year with highlighting Kenya as a film destination. Diversifying our mandate in ensuring that Kenya is an ideal place to visit has brought us to this realization that we are an untapped film destination. Kenya is banking on the film industry as one of the ways to increase the number of Indian travellers into Kenya which currently stands at over 125,000 tourists per year. Over 10 Kenya travel trade partners attended the Outbound Travel Mart in Mumbai, a leading travel show in Asia, from 23rd – 25th of January at the Bombay Exhibition Centre to entice travellers to visit Kenya. This year KTB lead local travel trade partners on marketing missions in India and Spain as the Kenya seeks to grow tourism numbers from those regions to 2.5 million visitors by 2022. From the 23rd-27th January, the delegation joined other exhibitors at IFEMA conference center in Madrid for the International Tourism Fair (FITUR). Through our participation in these expos, we aim to enhance repeat visits as well as present the destination to new visitors. Finally, I invite you to an entertaining read of this issue of GoPlacesTM Magazine. Adventure awaits, be a-part of it. Jimi Kariuki Chairman, Kenyan Tourism Board

FOREWORD The year 2018, was a good season in the tourism calendar. The sector recorded a 2 million mark in international arrivals, the highest ever in the recent past. The International arrivals into Kenya from January to December 2018, were at 2,025,206. This is a significant growth of 37.33 % compared to 2017 where there were 1,474,671 international arrivals. Revenue receipts also rose by 31.2% to close at Kshs. 157,386,151,000, compared to 2017 that posted Kshs. 119,900,000,000. Domestic tourism continues to record and upward trend with 3,974,243 bed night occupancy compared to of 3,645,243 in 2017. A number of key milestones were recorded within the period; key contributors to the good performance; Kenya was named the World’s Leading Safari Destination for the fifth time, by the World Travel Awards (WTA) during its 25th Africa edition ceremony held in Durban, South Africa. Maasai Mara National Reserve and Diani Beach were named Africa’s Leading National Park and Leading Beach Destination respectively. Towards the end of October 2018 renowned CNN business anchor and travel journalist Richard Quest toured Nairobi and showcased it as a modern and dynamic business city. His visit added on to the growing list of celebrity visitors who have experienced Magical Kenya. The national carrier commenced its direct flights from New York City to Nairobi during the October season, major boost to arrivals from US market. There was a growth in exhibitor numbers during the 8th Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE),2018 from 140 to 185 marking a new milestone for the largest travel trade fair in East and Central Africa. The 79th SKAL International World Congress was hosted in Mombasa. The conference themed “Congress on the Beach” attracted over 500 tourism and hospitality agents from across the world. This enabled Mombasa to showcase itself as the preferred Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) destination. Kenya realized Ksh.3.7 billion in revenue value from the Charter Incentive Programme as announced by the Tourism and Wildlife CS Najib Balala, a big thumb up for the program that was unveiled in 2016.
14 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com
Qatar airways launched direct flights from Doha to Mombasa. This direct flight is not only an endorsement of Mombasa as a destination but a vote of confidence on the Kenyan coast . A 46 % growth was noted in arrival of visitors through the Moi International Airport during the period under review. We are optimistic for a further growth this year. The just concluded Outbound Travel Mart (OTM) in India reported positive findings from travel trades with potential travel bookings in the season. We intend to grow arrivals from the market by 15%. India is a crucial outbound market through which Kenya can continue to grow its tourism arrivals which closed at 125,032 last year a 6.17% growth compared to 2017. We pride ourselves in diversity. We cannot wait to experience the Magical Kenya Open Golf tournament from the 14th- 17th of March, 2019. The tournament is expected to draw the interest of top golf talent across the globe. The Magical Kenya Open Golf tournament is also part of the wider strategy to grow sport tourism. We are renowned worldwide for the strides we have made in the sports sector. Finally, we continue to appreciate Go Places as it continues to highlight notable moments in the tourism sector. Let’s continue to discover the hidden gems of Kenya.

Nation Pride And Resilience Is What Defines The Kenyan People Kenya is slowly and steadily coming to terms with the recent 14 Riverside act of terrorism where 21 people lost their lives and scores were injured. The swift and coordinated rescue efforts by security team was commendable. Terrorism remains a global problem and is among issues directly affecting people everywhere, with every country grappling with a strategy to curb the menace. But more commendable was the Kenyan people, who stood in solidarity to defeat the act of evil and showed compassion, overflowing patriotism and individual courage. They remained unbowed and helped the attack victims, donated blood, and collectively defended the country’s national pride. They attacked the “enemy”, real or perceived, in one voice. The attack did not only expose how much Kenyans care for each other but also how patriotic they are to their nation brand. Brand Finance in its 2018 Nation Brands report of the most valuable nation brands, ranked Kenya the fourth best performing brand in the world, and third in Africa. A country’s brand value includes performance of trade and investment in tourism, governance, education and other sectors of the economy. Kenya is widely acclaimed globally as the home of champions (the athletes) and the preferred tourist destination courtesy of its wildlife (the big 5), sun, sand and sea at the coastal beaches as well as other tourist attraction sites across the country. But the most valuable resource for any well-performing nation brand lies in its people. Kenya’s most important and natural heritage is her people, and are the force behind its vibrant economy. Their diversity, traditions, customs and practices create a totality of the distinct people who work together, compete and interact in many ways. So, who are these Kenyan people? Here are some character traits of the Kenyan people that makes Kenya thrive as a strong nation brand: They are Generosity: the giving nature, kindness and hospitality that pervade daily interactions among people from diverse cultures. This is often extended to visitors across the country whether in business or tourism. They are Optimistic: Kenyans demonstrate a competitive nature and a strong belief in their inner capabilities and potential. Because of this value, Kenyans have been on the forefront of numerous innovations in the African continent. They are Resilient: Kenyans are also known to be fighters and never give up in times of adversity. They are known for their confidence and optimism in looking towards a brighter future. They are Brave: Fearless and courageous in dealing with external aggressions and protecting the country, Kenya is recognized as the regional peace keeper. Kenya has bravely proved to be the leader and trend setter in leadership and governance and the heroic performance in sports, entrepreneurship, innovation,
environment conservation and academics is a show of total agility and prowess. They are Respectful: Kenyans are able to live in harmony with people from different cultures, religions and races. This trait is very well expressed in the reputation as hard workers who are committed to delivering quality. The democratic systems allow for different religions, beliefs and cultural diversity. They are Open: The will to embrace new ideas, innovations, cultures and advancements in ICT makes Kenya a top investment destination. Complimented by the business savvy workforce, the openness makes it easy for businesses to thrive. Kenya plays host to scores of multinationals and is the anchor to regional offices and top international agencies tapping into the African continent. They are Warm: Kenya has a beautiful picturesque scenery, conducive climate, hospitable and generous people that visitors fall in love with. This has made Kenya one of the top tourist destination worldwide. These character traits of Kenyans are largely shaped by Kenya’s national value system which include being patriotic where the country comes first, promoting national unity with a strong believe in the phrase, “United we stand divided we fall”, championing peace, respecting the rule of law, respecting human dignity and rights as the source of national purpose and action, among others. There is an opportunity to leverage Kenya’s high levels of familiarity and majestic beauty to package the most accessible destinations for a taste of adventure, a memorable exploration of eco-tourism or as a soulful venue for cultural trips. And then there is the people. On behalf of Brand Kenya Board, I laud the Kenyan people for being the biggest resource in creating a brand called Kenya. I salute them for being the key drivers of the country’s economic growth and for putting the country first when faced with adversities. By so doing, they become the first brand ambassadors and therefore are able to safeguard the gains made since independence because a country’s nation branding is a collective responsibility and cannot be left to an individual or an institution.

WILD LOVE ON A ROLL Every Valentine’s Day, most people around the world give or receive bouquets of red roses, tonnes of chocolate and cards and later head down to the usual and almost cliché candlelit dinner at a joint across town and then call it a day. It is more or less predictable that this year’s Valentine’s, plans remain unchanged. Whereas there’s no harm in celebrating loved ones in this manner, the truth is, you are probably stuck in a rut, sick and tired of the same old routine, and you want things done differently this time before you blow up literally. While the rest of the world will be standing in line on line fidgeting with their phones waiting to pay for slow services at some outlet, why don’t you escape to a KWS Park near you for a quiet romantic adventure with your loved one, faster and for less? There’s a chance that in your location across Kenya, there’s a Park accessible to you. This Valentine’s season, as you celebrate and appreciate your loved ones, we are here to showcase the best hideouts for you and yours. Sometimes three is a crowd and at KWS, we have uncrowded places and spaces to enjoy your Valentine’s date away from the crowd. Wouldn’t you not want to drop everything and vanish away from the daily bustle and stresses of life just to summon your sanity back as you work on your relationship? What a better way to finally shout ‘good riddance January!’ It is a common saying in Kenya that January comes with its fair share of stressors especially financial after the December festive month, but February the love month comes in triumphantly to ease everything out. Picture a red billed ox pecker beautifully perched on the back of a gigantic black or white rhino at the scenic Lake Nakuru National Park pecking out parasites from the rhino’s skin. That intimate moment between these two is a vivid illustration that two wild and completely different animal species can coexist peacefully in the wild both in time and space while at the same time mutually benefitting from each other. Truly, the gifts of nature are breathtakingly magical. Do you love the outdoors or do the outdoors love you? Either way, grab your picnic essentials, and in just under an hour, you could be at the beautiful Impala picnic site located in the world’s only wildlife capital – Nairobi National Park or atop the amazing Baboon Cliff picnic site at Lake Nakuru National Park depending on your location. The sceneries
16 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com
from atop the strategically placed picnic sites offer you more than you bargained for. A zoom with a pair of binoculars will casually reveal the king of the jungle making a quick dramatic kill of a not so lucky lone buffalo. Take advantage of the silence and solitude that nature offers to randomly whisper sweet nothings into the ears of your loved one. Your only undoing could be the light blowing wind that would carry those intimate words with it. And a little bird might whisper, “Please go down on one knee and pop that subtle question”. Come ready for that and more because in the wild, we grab such rare chances and run. We love visitors and we love it more when they stay over and a little longer so that they get to explore the wild world further and create tonnes of memories. There’s something about lazing about in the open, under the cover of a spectacular starry night while barbeque grills on the side. From a mile, the great horned night owls hoot away rhythmic songs as the soundtrack. Slip away into a session of sound sleep in your tent or banda and retire for the night. Catch the most stunning king-size ball of sunrise in the dewy morning as the wild springs back to life once again. Bring your loved one, get into the wild caravan of love and buckle up. Love is on a roll and we are rolling with it. Are you ready? Flipflopi Expedition
WORLD’S FIRST PLASTIC DHOW
Images Courtesy of Flipflopi Team
40 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com
The traditional dhow is made from wood, but an ambitious new project has made waves in the waters of East Africa. Kenyans have brought honour and praise to the country for being trailblazers in low-tech ideas to address the plastic waste menace in the world. The group of volunteers from Lamu conceived the idea and made a 9 meters plastic dhow, one of its kinds in the world. This comes only two years after Kenya banned the use, manufacture and importation of all plastic bags used for commercial and household packaging.
2016 by Ben Morison after witnessing the shocking quantities of plastic on Kenya’s beaches, an area where he spent much of his childhood. Ben saw an opportunity to create something visually engaging and fun which would help communicate the impact and action on marine litter. By using only locally available resources and low-tech solutions in the creation of the Flipflopi Boat – the project has been able to demonstrate solutions that are scalable in local communities. Ali Skanda said they are looking forward to arriving in Zanzibar safely.
A Dhow made entirely from recycled plastic aims to go on at least two expeditions this year. Dubbed the Flipflopi Project, Dipesh Pabari, the project’s team leader said, the Flipflopi Project aims to engage and raise awareness to local communities along the route on the dangers of single-use plastics and to teach them how to recycle their plastic. “The main aim is to build on the story of this plastic revolution and to continue to highlight to the world that single-use plastic items are dreadful,” Pabari told UN Environment. The Flipflopi prototype will be embarking on a groundbreaking 500km expedition from Kenya’s Lamu Island to Zanzibar in Tanzania from Thursday to February 7th.
More Beaches Than Plastics
How The Dhow Is Made
The rainbow-colored Flipflopi dhow is 9 meters long and made from discarded plastics picked up during regular clean-ups of the ocean. Among the builders was a group of community members who collected the plastic waste that was used to construct the boat and stitched the flip-flops. The boat was built on Lamu Island in its entirety by Ali Skanda, the chief boat builder who also works as a project leader alongside Pabari, and a crew of volunteer crew members.
The Flipflopi Project is supported by the UN Environment and the Kenyan government in its latest effort to combat plastic pollution. Kenyans use about 24 million plastic bags monthly, according to an estimate by The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Pabari says the Flipflopi Project team will hold events in towns along their routes, meeting with schoolchildren, government officials and people in the local communities. “We’ll be holding recycling workshops, teaching people simple things, like how to make rope out of plastic bottles using very rudimentary technology,” he said.
Plastic Revolution
With the Flipflopi being an example, The Plastic Revolution is creating a campaign movement for change. It is composed of individuals, companies, groups, even governments, all committed to bringing about a world without single-use plastic.
Pabari says this makes the project distinctly African. “It is so important that this is an African story because Africa is one of the few continents left that hasn’t necessarily gone the whole way towards a consumption-led society yet,” Pabari says.
About Flipflopi
During an interview, Mr Dipesh Pabari, a CoFounder of the FlipFlopi Project, said that the idea came from a tour operator, Mr Ben Morrison who had observed the dilapidation of the Kenyan coast by plastics. The Flipflopi project was founded in Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com | 41

TIPS FOR A
Romantic Date
68 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com
Wine & Dine Since it’s the month of love you’re probably scratching your brain thinking about how to make this Valentine’s Day special for you and your partner. There’s so many ways to make it a night to remember, dining is a beautiful way to create a romantic evening for two. The experience does not always have to be out at a Fine Dining restaurant, Dining In is just as romantic. Here are a few tips on how to make this Valentine’s like no other…
5 TIPS FOR DINING IN
5 TIPS FOR DINING OUT
1. Plan the menu: It’s important to get diet specifications from your partner beforehand… you don’t want to present a meal they can’t eat! It can still be a surprise, just get a list of their likes and dislikes so you can plan your meals accordingly.
1. Ambience: You need to find a place that sets the right tone and mood for the perfect evening. This involves dimmed lighting and soft tones to accentuate the romance. Dimmed lighting also represents a quiet setting as opposed to a brightly lit restaurant which always tends to be loud.
2. Set the mood: It’s believed that everyone looks better in candlelight… which in not entirely false. But the reality is candlelight casts a warm and inviting glow and that’s exactly what you want to set a romantic mood! It’s different from your normal Dining In experiences. 3. Use Flowers: Flowers tend to make people happy and again you’re changing the setting of the usual dine in experience. Flowers stand out and already give a romantic feel as soon as your partner walks in. Yes, it is cliché…but it works! 4. Music: Helps set the romantic tone too. The best would be playing a song or playlist that resonates with a memory between you and your partner, like the first time you met, the first song you danced to together etc. 5. Plan Activities: Who says it just has to be dinner? Plan activities to make more than one memory for the night. These activities include watching a movie, dancing, cards or board games… hey in this age even a PlayStation game!
The whole idea is to create special moments between you and your partner to build your relationship. The effort put in just shows how much you love them.
2. Restaurant Setting: The setting in the restaurant plays a huge role in your dining experience. Look for a place that gives both of you privacy together but yet with others around you. This means distance between tables should be enough to give you privacy and yet no too spaced out. 3. Quiet: Look for a restaurant that plays very soft music or very low background music. You want to be able to have a conversation with your partner and hear exactly everything they’re telling you and yet have a soothing atmosphere. 4.Make it Personal: Pick a restaurant that is special to both of you, not just any Fine Dining restaurant but rather one that you share a personal memory with. If it’s a first date, pick a place that is personal to you so you can share something about yourself. This will give them a unique dining experience and a special one too. 5. Service: Service details are the ones that make the romantic evening out. Everything can be romantic but without good serving it ruins the whole experience. Find a restaurant that has service that is warm, prompt, efficient and a little personal. Whatever you decide to do remember the right food, right drink and the right setting is what’ll make your date perfect… not how much you spend! Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com | 69

BOOK REVIEW
GENRE: MEMOIR In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As the First Lady of the United States of America, the first African American to serve in that role, she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives. Michelle stood strongly with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare. In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive, balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations and whose story inspires us to do the same. Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama is an American lawyer, university administrator, and writer who served as the First Lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017. She is married to the 44th U.S. President, Barack Obama, and was the first African-American First Lady. JUNIOR GOLF For
BEGINNERS
“Introducing your kids to Golf ?” In today’s world, introducing children to any sport or hobby is extremely difficult based on the alternatives they have. We have to compete with tablets, smart phones and gaming consoles. Having said that, I am still a believer that there are ways to introduce them to playing sport and especially golf. Below are my top 3 strategies: 1. MAKE IT FUN – Children tend to get bored very easily and like to be challenged. When you next take them to the golf club, play putting games or have a chipping competition with them. Don’t be too concerned about their technique but just guide them on the basics and not worry if the grip is wrong or the swing doesn’t look perfect. The idea is to let them figure it out, which they will. 2. GIVE THEM COMPANY – New children to golf tend to feel very shy, so I recommend have them start with their best friend or even a family session where everyone is involved. 3. IF YOU CAN’T BEAT EM, JOIN EM – Unfortunately, there will have to be a compromise and technology can also be a useful tool to interest children to play golf. For example, exposing them to funny golf clips, golf games and apps which are interactive and there are some inspiring golf movies out there which are family appropriate. I hope this helps as a guide. Who knows, the next great champion may just be your child.
