One of Seychelles’ greatest assets is the exotic assortment of its multitude of islands and the variety they offer to visitors wishing to take in a selection of islands during the course of their stay. Each isle has its individual geography and character extending from granite boulders to coral reefs, from untouched forests and bird sanctuaries to private resorts and hideaways and, in this respect, never has the visitor been more spoiled for the sheer choice of unspoiled island venues. Here, cocooned within the reassuring atmosphere of a large family, there is still ‘time to enjoy’ the finer things of life and to appreciate the elements of a truly refreshing Creole culture and enviable island lifestyle. FOREWORD Tourism is a principal export for many African countries and a significant source of foreign exchange. Africa’ s tourism industry is growing faster than its economy as a whole with majority of countries in Africa demonstrating the capacity and political will to improve and expand their tourism sector. Kenya tourism sector has experienced an upsurge in the development of the hospitality and hotel industry in the first quarter of the year, due to the overwhelming support and partnership from various stakeholders and the citizens. The growth experienced in the sector mirrors the successful implementation of the four strategies of product development , investment , infrastructure and marketing strategies by the government and the stakeholders in the sector. I am extremely honored to have received the World Travel and Tourism Global (WTTC) Champion Award for Social Impact during the at the 19th World Travel and Tourism Global Summit in Seville, Spain on 3rd April 2019. The Awards recognized those public officials or countries who, through their leadership, have made a difference through unique public policies and initiatives that have increased the competitiveness of the sector within their countries enabling gender equality and diversity; engaging local communities and making the sector more attractive for future generations. This Award is not only a win for myself, the Ministry, tourism and wildlife sectors, but is also an endorsement of Magical Kenya’ s efforts to make tourism, wildlife sustainable and ensure that both, directly benefits our local communities who are the custodians, and stewards of both our tourism and wildlife resources. The World Travel and Tourism Council Global Summit is the highest level gathering of travel and tourism leaders in the world. Kenya through its National Tourism Blueprint 2030 and National Wildlife Strategy 2030 advocates for sustainable growth in tourism by undertaking community engagement and participation in the management of tourism sector with host communities as the custodians and protectors of wildlife and tourism resources. This was best exemplified by the record-setting tourism performance in 2018 which saw over 2 million international arrivals, which was also endorsed by President & CEO of WTTC, Ms. Gloria Guevara in Nairobi, where she symbolically released the WTTC Economic Impact Research 20 1 9 for Africa. The Ministry is focused on improving and modernizing Kenya’ s wildlife conservation sector, under the banner KENYANS FOR WILDFLIFE & WILDLIFE FOR KENYANS , since it has a direct impact on the tourism sector - of which 703 is wildlife-based. Thus, wildlife is key to the success of our tourism sector. We plan to empower local communities who co-habit with the wildlife. Empowering the local communities will ensure that they are better custodians and stewards of wildlife conservation through communitydriven conservancies . In partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service, we held a global march for endangered species, which was geared towards stopping poaching of elephants and rhinos, so as to put an end to trade in ivory and rhino horn.

8 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

Businesses and Conferences contributed 12.13 of total arrivals in 2018. The Ministry is now keen on positioning Kenya as a leading MICE destination. This will in turn promote different counties as MICE destinations, which will highlight the diversity in what the tourism sector has to offer. Nairobi City is a key destination for MICE business, with the World Travel Awards ranking it as one of Africa’s leading meetings and conference destinations. I recognize contributions made by key tourism partners who continue to proudly showcase Kenya as a world class destination. One such exceptional partner is Go Places™ Kenya. FOREWORD I was honored to have been re-appointed by His Excellency the President to serve a second-term as the Chairman of the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB). I would like to thank the KTB Board and the management team, and also the tourism private sector for the support given in my first-term. I look forward to continuing to work closely with them for my next three years. 2018 was a significant year for tourism in Kenya thanks to the combined destination marketing efforts of the tourism private sector and the KTB. According to the Tourism Sector Performance Report 2018 released by the Tourism Research Institute (TRI), a state corporation under the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, visitor arrivals grew by over 37% over 2017 and revenue receipts grew by over 31% over the same period. I am very excited to continue to be a part of Kenya’s tourism journey. The mandate of KTB is essential in ensuring that brand awareness and visibility remains top notch. We will not slowdown in delivering on our mandate to keep promoting Kenya as a leading leisure and business destination on local, regional and international levels. MagicalKenya has been named one of the beautiful places around the world to visit by Cable News Network (CNN). This recognition is a boost for us because it continues to highlight our tourism product to the local, regional and international markets. The KTB bagged the ‘Africa Campaign of the Year Award’ from Expedia Group for the digital campaign ‘Can We Kenya?’ by Expedia group, one of the largest online global travel agencies. The campaign focused on promoting Kenya and encouraging travelers to explore the wide variety of magical experiences, culture and cuisine the destination has to offer, and even to book travel to Kenya through an Expedia website travel partner. The campaign targeted travelers from Australia, Canada, South Africa, the United States of America (USA) and the United Kingdom (UK). The Expedia award was an award for Kenya. We will continue to use social and digital media marketing strategies in response to the changing global travel trends which are increasingly leaning towards online platforms for interactive marketing results. We want to get it right in terms of the digital space and as such we shall continue to explore the use of online channels to heighten the MagicalKenya experience. Our destination’s ‘Signature Experiences’ will continue to be highlighted

14 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

on social media platforms and through this we will continue projecting Kenya’s diversity and uniqueness in tourism product offering. We will continue to work closely with the counties as part of improving the quality of existing tourism circuits and enhancing the tourism products. In March this year, Kenya hosted the European Golf Tour event dubbed the ‘Magical Kenya Open’. This event has helped position Kenya as a golf destination. We have over thirty-five golf courses around the Country. Finally, I would like to appreciate the efforts of Go Places™ to promote our diverse tourism products through their various digital platforms. On behalf of the team at the Kenya Tourism Board we wish all the Go Places™ readers an exciting migration season. Enjoy your read and be sure to continue to experience the Magic of Kenya. As the digital marketing and communication sector continues to grow we want to re-engineer how we tap into it. A better relationship with customers will be formed once we understand their needs in this sector. We are proud to announce that some of our digital marketing efforts are bearing fruits. FOREWORD This is the right time to invest in Kenya

Kenya remains a strong economy and a formidable brand if the recently released Economic Survey Report 2019 is anything to go by. The survey which was compiled by Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows a significant rise in Kenya’s economic growth by a whopping 6.3 per cent in 2018. This, the report says, was thanks to a boom in the agricultural sector that was necessitated by favourable rainfall last year. Agriculture remains the country’s biggest pillar that contributed more than a third of the overall wealth. The sector, which has also been earmarked as a priority area towards the achievement of the national development blueprint Big 4 Agenda, experienced an accelerated growth of 6.4 per cent down from 1.9 per cent in 2017. The sector created more than KES. 3 Trillion in wealth. Transport sector came second after agriculture, injecting Sh711 billion into the Kenyan economy, with a greater percentage coming in from the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), which has so far been a success story. The tourism sector also flourished last year according to the report, recording the biggest growth ever at 16.6 per cent to earn the country a record Sh157 billion. This growth is attributed to the stable political environment among other factors. Other sectors which lifted the economy include manufacturing, telecommunication, financial services, among others. What does this say about Kenya? That Kenya’s economy remains significantly stable and resilient despite the usual developmental challenges not unique to Kenya alone. The vibrant key sectors continue to flourish cementing Kenya’s position as a powerhouse in the East African region. The country was recently ranked 3rd most innovative country in Africa in the 2018 Global Innovation Index report coming after South Africa and Mauritius. The report also identified Kenya as the chief innovation achiever in the region since 2011, far ahead of a country like South Africa, which has a higher GDP per capita. This is an indicator that the country is on the right path in strengthening its economy further. Aside from the stable economy, this is why you should choose to invest in Kenya: • Kenya is the largest and most advanced economy in East and Central Africa. Its GDP accounts for more than 50 per cent of the region’s total and in terms of current market prices. • Kenya’s strong growth prospects are supported by an emerging middle class and an increasing appetite for high-value good and services. There is a rising trend towards urbanization, which is contributing to an increase in consumer demand for high value goods.

• Kenya is strategically located and a gateway to East and Central Africa with great regional and international connectivity. It borders the Indian Ocean and is well suited as a production and distribution base to service Africa, Europe, the Middle East, South Asia and other Indian Ocean Islands. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for instance functions as an effective Air hub between Africa, Europe and Asia. • Wide market access as a result of Kenya’s membership to regional economic blocs like the East African Community (EAC) with over 135 million people and COMESA that gives access to over 450 million people. Kenya also has several trade preferential arrangements including The African Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA) which allows for quota free and duty free access to the USA market for over 6,000 items produced in Kenya as well as The new Africa Caribbean and Pacific-European Union (ACPEU) Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) which gives duty free access to the EU among others. • Improving infrastructure with the following ongoing projects: ---USD 5.5 billion Lamu Port Southern Sudan – Ethiopia Transport Corridor Construction of Lamu Port headquarters is in progress. ---USD 3.6 billion Standard Gauge Railway links Kenya’s Indian Ocean port city of Mombasa to the capital Nairobi ---USD 654 million Jomo Kenyatta International Airport expansion comprises of a 178,000m2 facility due for completion in 2017, complemented by Nairobi Commuter Rail Service linking the city centre to the airport. ---USD 366 million The Port of Mombasa harbour channel was deepened by 15 metres and widened to 500 metres to accommodate larger vessels. ---USD 360 million Construction of the eight-lane controlledaccess 50km Nairobi– Thika superhighway was completed in 2012. It has led to the emergence of new • Availability of labour with Kenya having a large, highly educated and skilled talent pool (Kenya population comprises of 55% of people between 15-64).

FOREWORD We thank you all for your continued support to Kenya Wildlife Service which has enabled us to conserve, manage and enhance Kenya’s wild flora and fauna. This month we are reaching out to the international community to support Kenya’s proposals on elephants and giraffes at the forthcoming Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). This is an international agreement between governments, which aims to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. The Cabinet Secretary for Tourism & Wildlife Hon. Najib Balala recently met with five European Union ministers to lobby for their support for Kenya’s CITES proposals when the world will make important decisions to govern regulation of international trade in endangered species of wildlife. We call upon other countries to support Kenya’s proposals to strengthen efforts to ban international trade in rhinoceros horns and elephant ivory, respectively. We also urge Parties to CITES to close all domestic markets for raw and worked rhinoceros horn and elephant ivory or other rhinoceros and elephant parts and derivatives as a matter of urgency. The demand for elephant ivory, rhino horn, pangolin scales and other wildlife products in the Asian market continues to be a growing concern and threat to the existence of wildlife. Therefore, governments, the civil society, grass root communities and all stakeholders should be proactive and collaborate to ensure the survival of elephants, rhinos and other endangered species. This was highlighted at this year’s Nairobi Global March for Elephants, Rhinos and Lions. The slightly over 10km march walk across Nairobi City from the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) to Kenya Wildlife Service was led by Hon Balala and was attended by other dignitaries, including the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Board of Trustees vice chairperson Ms Betty Maitoyo, KWS Director General Brig. (Rtd) John Waweru, Kenya Tourism Board Managing Director Betty Radier, Tourism Regulatory Authority Director General Mr Kipkorir Lagat and Wildlife Direct CEO Ms Paula Kahumbu.

20 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

We have had recent successes in the management and protection of wildlife, including hosting three out of four species of giraffes. In fact out of a global population of 90,000 giraffes, 35,000 are in Kenya. Last year, only 38 elephants were lost through poaching compared to 384 in 2012. During the same period, only four rhinos were illegally killed compared to 69 in the year 2013. The march could not have ended on a better note as the government granted a free entry-day for all Kenyan citizens to Nairobi National Park, Nairobi Safari Walk & Nairobi Animal Orphanage the following day. FOREWORD

As we get into the middle of the year we look forward to exciting activities across our various historical sites across the nation. We just concluded inaugurating Kenya’s 7th World Heritage Site- Thimlich Ohinga in a pompous event held at the site in Migori County. This site enriches the Western Region Tourist Circuit by adding an important aspect about the historical culture and heritage of this region’s ancestry. Visit this wondrous archaeological site and discover the intrigues of the Western Region. Join us as we celebrate the International Museums Day which is marked globally on 18th May annually. We will have various activities happening at various museums countrywide. In a bid to continue with our conservation efforts, NMK together with the County Government of Trans-Nzoia held a tree planting ceremony at Kitale Museum to reclaim 60 acres of encroached land. Kitale Museum was first opened in 1924 and seats on 82 acres of land. Over the years, squatters encroached 60 acres of land belonging to NMK. In March, 2019, efforts to reclaim the land intensified and NMK was able to reclaim and fence off the entire 82 acres with help from the County Government, KWS, KFS, NSIS, National Land Commission, NEMA and Kitale Club. The land is the only remaining riverine forest and had almost been cleared by settlers. It was also home to the endangered De Brazza monkey. After deforestation, the monkeys moved away and now fight for territory that is not theirs endangering their survival. The swamp that exists within the land acts as a place for clearing storm waters from the town hence a very important feature for the community living down-stream.

22 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

This is an initiative to not only reclaim the encroached land but to also contribute towards the growing Kenya’s tree cover to 10% by 2022. In this issue we will talk more about our 7th World Heritage Site. Learn more about the importance of protecting our heritage and how to contribute towards its preservation. Write to us, we want to also hear from you on how you’d like to be involved in promoting, preserving and protecting Kenya’s rich heritage. Visit your nearest museum/gallery and find out what activities await you. Karibuni!

Thrill Seeking Activities You Have To Try No one wants to keep doing the same things day in and day out. New experiences can only be formed if we are willing to try. Outdoor activities are the only way to experience how beautiful the world is. Extreme sports in Kenya have taken a life of its own with not only foreign tourists attracted by the prospect of adrenaline filled experiences but also locals. The following article highlights 7 adventure destinations worth exploring.

ZIP LINING

ARCHERY

Ever felt like standing on top of a cliff while screaming your lungs out, or fly high in the sky like a free bird? A zip line activity is an ideal way to get over the fear of heights. Zip lining has weaved its way to the top of people’s bucket lists. It enables you to view beautiful sceneries such as rivers, green forests, hill ranges, valleys and birds. To experience this adventure you can visit; Kereita Forest, The Forest, Rapids Camp Sagana.

Take a chance on the wild side with archery. Shooting with a bow and arrow may seem like a primitive thing to do but the thrill you get afterwards is indescribable. It is an easy thing to do especially if you follow your instructor’s technique. Hitting the target right in the middle is your ultimate goal once you pick up your bow and arrow. This activity requires focus and patience because you will not get it right the first time. Nairobi Archery Club and the Forest are some of the places that offer this activity.

SKY DIVING Jumping out of a plane seems like something traumatising. Your first jump will always be part of you. You will forget that you are jumping off a plane as you take in the most incredible views imaginable of the mountains or ocean. The sensation craved will be quenched as you soar through the air, free as a bird. Skydiving and adrenaline are synonymous. Sky diving produces an overwhelming happiness due to the release of endorphins. In a pleasurable blend of fright and pure excitement, sky diving gets your blood pumping and your heart palpitates. 54 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

PARAGLIDING An energizing and loosening up experience that everybody can appreciate, paragliding is likely the most elating, quiet and unadulterated type of flight yet. If skydiving isn’t enough, paragliding is another way for you to get up in the air. You will get a little more air time and scenic views; this is definitely the way to do it. You and your heartbeat will be soaring after being part of this recreational sport. Visit Machakos Mua Hills for a paragliding experience.

MOUNTAIN BIKING It doubles up as a great workout session and a lot of fun. Casually bike along the coast or head into the terraces such as Mount Kenya for some more extreme cycling as you shred up and down mountain trails. Biking across terraces and scenic places with flora and fauna underlines the fact that mountain biking ranks up there with the best of the best in adventurous sports. Sightseeing, body exercises across different terrains make mountain biking a natural choice for anyone who loves these experiences or would want to have a taste.

WHITE WATER RAFTING Managing to navigate risks and distractions builds someone’s self-confidence and sharpens their wit. White water rafting is a sport that requires watchfulness and this aspect makes it downright fun and exciting. Giving loved ones an opportunity to huddle up in a raft, participants get to bond and have a time to share moments and make precious memories. Paddle your way through some amazing watery terrain in Rapids Camp Sagana or the Ewaso N’giro River.

KITE SURFING Kite surfing is a great choice for anyone who just wants to have fun or let off some steam. As you glide over the water, learn and practice new skills you end up feeling fulfilled. This activity offers a picturesque setting with strong winds to sail in any fashion. Kite surfing requires less strength in comparison to windsurfing. Find this thrilling activity at Nyali beach, Che –Shale and H20 extreme.

You can wear gloves for this process. Core and de-seed the habaneros. This will ensure that you get the right amount of spicy for your sauce. Add your chopped habanero chilli peppers, garlic, ginger and the rice vinegar in a blend. Blend until you get a smooth and consistent liquid. Note you can also use the immersion blender for this process. Use a sieve to strain the liquid into a pan. Add the honey and lime at this point. Boil the liquid for around 15 minutes to thicken the sauce. Store the sauce in an airtight container and it can be stored for up to four months in a refrigerator. The longer the sauce stays the richer the flavors become.

BOOK REVIEW

The Dragonfly Sea Novel

GENRE: FICTION The Kenyan Coastal community has not been featured prominently especially in mainstream literature. This novel has been set in that area exploring the culture and political situation of the region. This is a relatable novel to people who come from the Coastal region by a Kenyan author. Owuor’s language is lush, and the vision she portrayed in the book is vibrant. It makes you feel like you are at the coast reliving the words. You feel connected to the characters, the spaces and places in the book. Owuor addressed themes of love, losses, searching and returning. Through these themes she addressed issues such as radicalization of the youth in that region. We see how that perceived war on terror in that region affects the characters in the book. The relationship between China and the sea is highlighted, also China’s relationship with African countries is discussed. We see Ayanna’s journey unfold throughout the book and as the story unfolds, we are transported to Pate, Xiamen and Istanbul. She has worked to make the book realistic, as you read you feel yourself being transported to the sights and the sounds described in the novel. Owuor’s craft keeps being redefined from her first novel making it exhilarating for her readers. As you keep reading the book your quest for answers will be heightened. Identity, belonging and marginalization of people that belong to a certain country are the questions you will continuously ask. This is a worth it read for Kenyan readers by a Kenyan writer.

Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor is a Kenyan writer. She won the 2003 Caine Prize for African Writing for her story “Weight of Whispers”. In 2004, she won the Woman of the year (Arts, Heritage category) for her contributions to the arts in Kenya. In September 2015, her book Dust was shortlisted for the Folio Prize and won Kenya’s pre-eminent literary prize, the Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature. YOU CAN GET THE BOOK AT: Prestige Bookshop, Text Book Centre, Qusoma Library & Bookshop & Yaya Bookstop. 74 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

Putting Drills The age old saying, “Drive for show & Putt for dough!” never gets old. Putting well will always save you atleast 3 to 4 shots per round but I know it’s not as interesting to practice. The good news is, you can make it fun with drills and competitions with friends and at the same time improve.

Box Drill

Place cones or tee pegs 2 feet away from the hole as shown above and try to hole out from each cone. You can increase the difficulty by moving further away.

This is one of my favourite drills especially amongst juniors. Place alignment sticks or clubs around the hole as shown above. The idea is to try putt into the box and hole to score points. This is a great drill to do as a group as you can compete as well as improve distance control. Increase difficulty by moving further away.
