n iconic new building in Cambridgeshire is underlining how world-class architecture and glazing systems from Wrightstyle can create buildings to breathe new life into areas of dereliction. The 20-acre waterside site in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire has been transformed with a mixed-use development designed to exceed modern building standards while creating a perfect location for local, national and international businesses. The centrepiece of the development is The Boathouse, a complex design on the bank of the river Nene, designed in the shape of a boat. Despite having to withstand severe weather and salt corrosion, the design incorporates wide-bay curtain walling and a faceted configuration. For the Wisbech project, commissioned by Fenland District Council, Devizes-based Wrightstyle installed glazing systems and fire doors to protect fire escape routes, working closely with their customer to design a solution to meet the architectural requirements of Feilden + Mawson LLP. The Boathouse, highly commended in the most recent RICS Awards, is an integral part of creating a gateway to the Wash and to the network of inland canals stretching into Cambridgeshire and the Midlands – an asset that had been in decline. The site, derelict for 20 years, is now a tourist attraction for the town and a major catalyst for further development. “The Boathouse involved some real design challenges, to develop and fabricate a fire safety solution for a completely unique building design,” said Lee Coates,Wrightstyle’s technical director. “However, we have the capability to meet the most exacting of designs – a reputation that is winning us business around the world.”

Wrightstyle has been closely involved in a number of regeneration projects, in the UK and internationally, most notably for a recent scheme in Hong Kong, now recognised as a milestone in urban renewal, and which includes a 53-storey office tower, a 5-star hotel with 665 bedrooms, rooftop swimming pool and a 600,000 sq ft shopping mall – and which now attracts over 100,000 visitors every day. On a smaller scale, but of regional importance, The Boathouse is the focal point of a wider regeneration project that also has a new business centre, yacht club, and leisure facilities. The strategic vision for the site, its ergonomic design and environmentallyfriendly design features will make it an example of excellence for other regeneration projects across the country. “Good design is at the heart of all successful regeneration projects, helping to transform and enhance the built environment while offering leisure and working facilities that meet changing expectations. When it comes to regenerative projects, we are now recognised as a supplier able to design and fabricate complex or large spans of glazing with optically-brilliant glass, and giving comprehensive protection against all natural and man-made threats,” said Lee Coates. TECHNAL GLAZING SYSTEMS HELP UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS SET A NEW BENCHMARK IN STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

Façade systems from architectural aluminium glazing specialist, Technal, have helped the University of Leeds to set a new benchmark for student accommodation in the city. More than 3,000sqm of Technal’s glazing systems for the new Charles Morris Hall were fabricated and installed by Dortech Architectural in a £1m contract and fast-track programme for design and build contractors Morgan Sindall. Designed by concept architects Sheppard Robson and delivered by DLA Architecture, the £21m student hall of residence comprises two half-hexagon buildings sited around a central landscaped courtyard, providing 457 hotel-style study bedrooms. The challenging glazing specification involved the construction of large oriel glazing bays which project 300mm in front of the cladding, and contrasting angular projecting bays to the corners of the two buildings. The oriel bays provide a different architectural feature and an alternative to more conventional recessed panels of glazing. The floor-to-ceiling glazed units, which maximise natural light, were constructed from Technal’s MX grid curtain walling inset with FXi65 top hung casement windows. Dortech fabricated and installed the bays in more than 30 different sizes to create a less regimented appearance for the building envelope. Laminated glass made with Vanceva coloured interlayers adds further interest to each façade – in panels of green where the glazing is set into red brickwork on the external elevations, and orange for the courtyard elevations to complement the cream-coloured brick cladding. The glazing had to provide good thermal performance to contribute to the scheme’s BREEAM ‘very good’ rating, slim sight lines, and be sufficiently robust to achieve the required spans and sharp corners that project beyond the structural supports. Long runs of MX grid curtain walling using 1500mm modules enclose the common room and the link bridge between the two accommodation blocks. The

window units in the common room are linked to the air conditioning system, which allows them to open automatically according to CO2 levels. All the other opening units on the scheme are operated by low-level levers to allow anyone, regardless of any disability, to open the windows. Set in landscaped courtyard gardens, the new Charles Morris Hall was constructed to replace a 1960s building as part of a major drive to upgrade the University’s student accommodation. The scheme features contemporary décor and high specification ensuite bathroom pods, which reduced time on site. The new hall will also provide hotel-quality accommodation for delegates attending outof-term conferences at the University. Technal’s FXi65 casement window system features curved profiles and delivers superior thermal efficiency using a 19mm flush polyamide thermal break and innovative gasket detailing to meet or exceed the revised Building Regulations. The 65mm module allows more economical glass specifications to be used, whilst still achieving the targeted U-value. The FXi65 system will also accommodate 17mm up to 48mm glazing units for wider choice to provide additional thermal or acoustic performance. Configuration options include fixed lights, top, side and bottom hung, tilt/turn and tilt/slide. MX curtain walling is fully compatible with the FXi window suite, and can be used to create a wide variety of architectural compositions from a single grid system – low to high rise façades, horizontal or vertical emphasis, and ribbon, structural, faceted, beaded and sloped glazing. MX Acoustic for additional noise protection and MX62 for larger glass sizes are the latest additions to the extensive range of MX curtain walling options. www.technal.co.uk Enquiry No 2 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

FAIRHURST DESIGN GROUP SPECIFIES SURECLAD CERAMIC GRANITE CLADDING AT MEDIACITYUK The first development phase at MediaCityUK at Salford Quays is rapidly approaching completion and several businesses and hundreds of ‘city dwellers’ have already moved into brand new offices and apartments constructed as part of Peel Media’s £650 million development by Bovis Lend Lease.Thousands of BBC employees will join them during 2011 as the Corporation relocates a large swathe of its operations to the UK’s first purpose-built media city, designed to fulfil the specific needs of the creative and digital industries. Facade specialist Shackerley (Holdings) Group Limited has supplied its Queen’s Award winning ceramic granite ventilated cladding systems for two of the tallest new buildings developed on the initial 40-acre site. Towering almost symmetrically above the main 250,000 sqft state-of the-art studio complex are a 218–bedroom Holiday Inn hotel and 21-storey Blue Tower office building. Despite their very different purposes, the exterior envelopes of these two edifices are very similar in design and finish. The architects at Fairhurst Design Group, responsible for designing both buildings for Peel Media, originally envisaged that a sandy coloured, naturally hewn stone material might be used to protect the towering elevations. However, their specifications changed when specialist cladding contractors, McMullen Architectural Systems brought the Sureclad ventilated facade system to their attention and showed the architects the wide range of ceramic granite, colours styles and finishes that Shackerley was able to provide. “The project team were very keen to present these buildings with very clean sharp lines, and for the cladding to have a high quality finish,” said Fairhurst Architect Tony Rogozinski. “We were impressed by the quality and choice of ceramic granite panels presented to us, and the Sureclad system offered us an attractive and logical alternative route to achieving our objective. We made extensive use of the ceramic granite cladding on both buildings, predominantly, but not exclusively, on the concrete shear walls of the towers enclosing the lift and stair cores, and we’ve been very pleased with the results.” Equally pleased with the specification is Brian Newell, Shackerley’s Chief Executive who commented:“MediaCityUK is without doubt one of the most significant, high profile developments the North West region has seen for a long time. We are absolutely delighted to have played a part in the first phase and to have had the opportunity to clad two of the most prominent buildings on the site with our Sureclad ceramic granite ventilated facades. This method of cladding not only enhances the appearance of a building and protects the outer envelope, but it also allows contractors to install highly effective thermal and acoustic insulation on the outside of the building, hidden behind the facades, to minimise heat loss, increase overall thermal efficiency and reduce noise levels.” MediaCityUK is the first scheme in the world to become a BREEAM approved sustainable community, by incorporating world leading sustainability into the design. www.shackerley.com Enquiry No 3 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

Zinc Key To Heritage Restoration Among the many heritage refurbishment projects being undertaken by traditional metal roofing contractors, VMZINC is now providing specialist advice to a growing number of architects. Experience drawn from regular restoration work using zinc throughout Europe has led to the company supplying materials for projects such as St Mary’s Church Plas Power and the highly acclaimed Clapham and Sheffield Bandstands. St Mary’s Plas Power is of late 19th century construction and still owned by the Fitzhugh family. As the last remaining privately maintained chapel in Wales to hold regular services, Heritage and CADW funding was obtained to replace the original zinc roof and rainwater system, dating from 1875. Use of pre-weathered zinc not only captured the style of the decades old patina but provided a colour which will continue to age normally. By contrast, the £1.2m refurbishment of Clapham Common’s Grade II listed bandstand involved VMZINC in the manufacture of a bespoke, 62-section natural zinc roof and central finial. In 1995 it had been placed on English Heritage’s ‘Greater London Buildings at Risk’ but had fallen into serious disrepair. Among factors affecting zinc’s specification by architects Dannatt Johnson were its resistance to corrosion, weight and the ability to meet a highly complex roof design. 1:1 roof replication was undertaken, manufacture being divided into sections for cutting and shaping.

10

Plaster prototypes were also used to create drilled sections and to design the punching moulds. A finely crafted curved wooden structure was built to support the zinc covering and the end result is an exceptional illustration of zinc’s versatility. Renovation of the derelict Grade II listed Victorian bandstand in Weston Park Sheffield formed part of a £2.7 million Heritage Lottery funded project to create the city’s first municipal park. It is again thought to be the only surviving example of such a design, VMZINC’s 0.8 gauge natural zinc having been fitted using sliding caps, one of the earliest techniques for constructing a zinc roof. The material was laid hollow, supported by timber boarding, and wired to the wrought ironwork frame.Archive photographs were used to ensure all original detailing was accurately replicated. Zinc has proved to be equally suited to church projects in which a combination of styles was required. There is no better example than the Community Centre Annex to St Pancras RC Church Lewes. The sweeping curves of the pre-weathered, standing seam zinc complement the traditional Victorian style in which clay plain tiles and brick have been used. Enquiry No 4 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

AMERICAN HARDWOODS ONLINE AND ON TARGET The complete redesign and restructuring of the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) information website for American hardwoods was both an investment and a risk. Would it really lead to a greater interaction with the target audience? Could it deliver easy access to a massive amount of technical information and yet still look and feel good to the user? Response to the site so far indicates a resounding “yes”.

hardwood information, debate and comment, and include a very clear picture of the environmental credentials and strategy of the U.S. hardwood industry. The goal is to engage all our European audiences, from wood traders to architects, so that they use the new website as a regular and valuable resource, and so far it seems to be working really well”.

The website has been live since the end of 2010 and already visitor numbers have increased dramatically, as has the time visitors spend on the site. When AHEC first launched a website back in September 2000, its primary function was to make available information on key species and access to AHEC’s wide range of free publications. But with the significant developments in technology and data available, the new site contains many layers of technically specific information and a plethora of case studies on twenty commercial U.S. hardwood species. This is a feat in itself but what is even more remarkable is that the core of the site is now available in ten languages. Publications can still be ordered for free, but there are now also options to view them as PDFs or instantly download them to PC.

New features include an extensive photo library, videos of AHEC’s most creative activities, and a newsletter. But for Mr.Venables, the blog is a favourite. “I have really enjoyed the freedom to comment on a wide range of issues including FSC certification, the problem with LEED, the importance of LCA’s and even how to tell the difference between red and white oak”.

According to AHEC Director David Venables, “We didn’t just want to change the look of the site, we wanted to use it to re-engage a whole community, create a focus for 16

Are You Alarmed? If not, you should be!! Recent figures show that there were around 50,000 house and building fires during the year and in six months (to September 2010) these resulted in around 140 fatalities. Fire protection is clearly key for any building. Then there is theft and burglary. Recent statistics show that every 37 seconds a home or property is burgled somewhere in the UK. The good news of course is that today there is a wide range of reliable alarms available to keep homes and buildings secure. Alarms are now an integral part of any property and are often a mandatory installation to comply with building regulations and also insurance requirements. However, today there are so many brands and types of alarms available on the market that it can be very confusing to select the best product. Smoke or heat detectors? Fire bells or electronic sounders? Strobe lights, photoelectric or mains ionisation smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms? – the choice just goes on and on. Christian Egerton of leading tool company Toolstation says there are a number of excellent new models now available that are vast improvements on traditional designs. Products such as the Fast Reacting Smoke Alarm from FireAngel which has new thermoptek technology combined with the very latest in optical sensing and thermal enhancement to provide really fast reaction to all types of fire in one single alarm. For domestic houses, there is a new Toast Proof Smoke Alarm which is a major breakthrough, no more rushing to take out the battery when you are cooking breakfast or frying chips! Movement detectors have come a long way since the early models which would be set off by bugs and the Wireless PIR Movement Detector from Response has a range of sophisticated extras including anti-tamper protection. Carbon Monoxide alarms are becoming must-haves these days after an increase in reported accidents from boilers and other equipment. Toolstation says these have also improved dramatically in recent years and there are now different alarms for different situations, such the new FireAngel digital carbon monoxide alarm which also includes an easy read digital display and shows room temperatures. Toolstation’s latest Catalogue 38, with its dedicated safety and security section, is available free at over 80 trade counters nationwide, can be ordered directly on freephone 0808 100 7211 or online at www.toolstation.com. If you’re looking to fit a water conditioner, you need to fit one that is proven and which has the science to back it up so an electrolytic physical water conditioner is the ideal choice. The SESI from Salamander Engineering uses a zinc electrode and a natural electrolytic process to flush hard salts through the system rather than allowing them to settle and build up as limescale. The SESI from Salamander has the advantage of being able to protect an entire household pipe system from the formation of limescale encrustation and, in the case of steel pipes, rust deposits, without the use of chemicals or salt and without the need for any electrical power supply, helping specifiers and installers to meet the requirements of Building Regulations Part L cost effectively. www.salamander-engineering.co.uk Enquiry No 23 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

COILLTE PANEL PRODUCTS PROVIDE DESIGN DIVERSITY NEW GENERATION OF SOLAR TECHNOLOGY NOW AVAILABLE FROM SCHUECO ProSol TF, the latest solar offering from Schueco UK Limited, represents a new milestone in photovoltaic products. Combining the latest sustainable photovoltaic thin-film technology with tried-and-tested Schueco aluminium façade systems, it has the ability to set new standards in the design of solar façade architecture. Thin-film cells have a number of operational advantages over conventional crystalline PV cells including the fact that they are largely unaffected by shading and can deliver impressive output values even in diffuse light or at higher temperatures. ProSol TF also has the added environmental benefit that its manufacture uses only a fraction of the silicon required to make conventional modules. By using individual laser cutting, colour selection and pattern printing, modules can become building design features in themselves. When ProSol TF modules are incorporated into large louvre blades, they serve three purposes simultaneously: energy generation, shading and building design. Moreover, their modular design principle with prefabricated system components means that installation is straightforward and the system delivers a high degree of reliability. It is also easy to retrofit thin-film modules on a flat roof using the innovative Schueco MSE 100 east/west mounting system. www.schueco.co.uk Enquiry No 24 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

Any interior, be it retail, financial services, leisure, hotels, restaurants, museums or travel, demands a high level of skill and innovation, and shopfitting and interior contracting continues to change at a rapid pace. Professional shopfitters combine traditional skills with modern technology and technical expertise to meet design demands, and when designers push boundaries, new and innovative materials are needed. FSC certified and locally manufactured in Ireland from Coillte Panel Products, SmartPly OSB is not only precision engineered and offers sustainability, strength and performance elements all vital to the success of any project but also a unique visual aesthetic which is being discovered as a design solution which offers a modern take on traditional or rural concepts and one which is being seen in its raw form more and more often. Leading MDF brand Medite is also part of Coillte Panel Products division, and provides a wide range of diverse FSC certified product, from Medite FR (flame retardant) to Medite Ecologique, which contains no added formaldehyde, making it perfect for particularly sensitive applications such as museum interiors. New shopfitting recently undertaken by FatFace, the active lifestyle clothing and accessories retailer, and Timberland, which offers rugged, outdoor-tested, environmentally-conscious gear for men, women and kids, have drawn on the rugged, natural appearance of OSB, creating interiors which reflect outdoor environments. The Body Shop, the original, natural and ethical beauty brand, leading high street clothing brand H&M, and even ‘Britain’s favourite retailer 2009’ John Lewis have

also turned to OSB to create exciting, visually appealing and environmentally responsible fit-outs in their stores. Whether a design is inspired by the countryside or requires an industrial edge, OSB is being specified and used for wall and floor covering, sanded and treated to a smooth finish for fitted furniture and display shelving, or as a solid base for portable garment racks and rails. Combining OSB with raw concrete and steel and exposed functions completes industrial designs, and combinations of OSB with glass and gloss surfaces brings warmth to stark contemporary finishes. Australian architect Matt Gibson designed a shop interior for the fashion retailer Fame Agenda, in the Docklands of Melbourne, Australia. A random and organic set of arches merge to form a cave-like enclosure with the OSB creating a strong visual statement, and when new functional-design driven fashion store Magazin-Zing opened in Moscow, the store featured OSB panels and furniture, making a fresh and unusual statement. As part of the new interior specification of its store in Vallée Village in Marne-la-Vallée, France, Café Coton, the family brand specialising in top-of-the-range classic and sports shirts and accessories for men, chose FSC certified Medite FR flame-retardant MDF for their interior display shelving and furniture. A fantastic array of new applications, specification and uses has been unlocked in the UK, Ireland and across Europe with the launch of Coillte Panel Products’ brand new range of thicker Medite MDF panels. Medite’s ongoing major programme of investment recently enabled the development and launch of much thicker FSC certified and CARB 2 compliant Medite, with the range topping out at an impressive 45mm. The maximum thickness of MDF previously available to market was 30mm, but Medite’s new technology has enabled their MDF panels to be manufactured thicker than ever before, and Medite Premier is now available in thicknesses of 32, 36, 38, 40, 42 and 45mm. www.medite-europe.com Enquiry No 25 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

Nuway Tuftiguard – entrance flooring with built in sustainability

Forbo’s Nuway Tuftiguard rigid engineered entrance matting systems are the most widely used types of entrance flooring in the UK and provide all types of public and commercial buildings with an outstanding first line of defence against soil and moisture being tracked in on the soles of shoes and the treads of wheeled traffic. For decades this market leading range of matting has been specified for its durability, strength and structural integrity, and because of the total flexibility of Forbo’s made-to-order service. Whilst each mat incorporates aluminium (100% recycled), brass or PVC scraper bars, with high tensile electro-galvanised steel wire linkages for superior load bearing, the customer determines the size, shape and construction of their mat and selects from a wide range of buffed or unbuffed prime rubber and polyamide fibre composite wiper strips, available in various colourways. Now, there’s another excellent reason to specify Nuway Tuftiguard. Forbo is the only manufacturer to offer Building Research Establishment (BRE) accredited entrance matting systems. The Nuway Tuftiguard range, which includes options for extremely heavy duty applications and also for fire sensitive locations, has received BRE certification after undergoing stringent assessment to measure its environmental impact at every stage in the life cycles. Forbo’s Coral range of textile wipe-off systems have received similar accreditation which means that specifiers can now deliver totally integrated and colour co-ordinated entrance flooring systems and meet their sustainability objectives, no matter what type of building they are working on and no matter how demanding the requirements of the location. www.forbo-flooring.co.uk/moreinfo

Exclusive Trend Mosaic Collection Enriched With 10 New Colours For 2011, leading Italian mosaic tile maker Trend has enriched its top-line Liberty collection with 10 sumptuous new colours, all handcrafted from stained glass and featuring the signature chromatic and iridescent textures of this exclusive design. Composed of hand-cut tesserae in a variety of compatible shapes, Liberty reinterprets glass mosaic design by presenting a selection of different tile shades and sizes, with both straight and sinuous lines, so that the reflective light of the material is the predominant decorative element. The new Liberty creations extend from the shimmering brilliance of Diamond and Pearl, through the contemporary look of Denim and Dove, to the dramatic, deep tones of Bronzite, Onyx and Tobacco. They join six existing colours that include tonal Black and White statements, as well as luminescent Blue and Red stained glass effects. Ideal for accent mosaic panels or flamboyant showcase walls and ceilings, Liberty is offered in film-faced modules measuring approximately 26cm x 31cm and retails from £275 to £320 per square metre. In line with Trend’s ‘green’ ethos that is focusing on the use of eco-sustainable materials, Liberty mosaics are made from up to 75% post-consumer recycled glass. This allows architects, interior designers and builders to obtain LEED credits for sustainable buildings certification and enables homeowners to select Liberty glass mosaics with a clear environmental conscience. Unique to Trend in concept and execution, the Liberty collection results from a design collaboration with celebrated Italian artist Giulio Candussio, creator of the dramatic ‘Iridescent Lightning’ mosaic mural at New York’s World Trade Centre, and enables his artistic vision to become part of today’s interior design language. This dynamic creative vision is exemplified in the new Liberty designs, which are coloured en masse, so that each tile is tinted throughout and completely resistant to wear, sunlight and chemical agents. The metallic notes of Amber, Bronzite, Diamond and Topaz are highlighted with occasional mirror-finish tesserae, while opalescent Pearl plays gently and subtly with reflected light. Deceptively simple Denim offers changing textures in faded blue, whereas the gorgeous earthy tones of Dove, Onyx and Tobacco project real depth of colour in contrasting tones. A palette of plums and purples in characteristically different shapes and sizes completes the Liberty collection, in Purple. To enable Candussio’s distinctive mosaic designs to be installed with ease, each irregularly-shaped module is faced with clear film, so that it can be positioned, cut and adjusted without disrupting the essential pattern. A complete range of grout colours is available in complementary and contrasting shades. Fully frost and water resistant, Liberty tiles are 4mm thick with 1mm joints and are perfect for many interior and exterior settings, including bathrooms, wetrooms and outside living areas, as well as high grade commercial applications like receptions, restaurants, lounge bars and boardrooms. www.trend-vi.com/en Enquiry No 27 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

Showered In SUCCESS Formed in 1979 Taplanes Showing Solutions were once a subsidiary of Kelan Engineering and are now the oldest British manufacturer of shower cubicles, minipods and ensuite pods. Using their own patented manufacturing techniques and materials, Taplanes are the only British company that can genuinely prove that they can meet a minimum 30 year life expectancy if not in excess of 50 years. Taplanes have produced specialized equipment for private, military and government contracts for various applications which have involved highly specialized chemicals, plastics, electronics and robotic knowledge. Most of these contracts were completed under “Letters of Confidentiality” and “Secrecy” documentation.Taplanes manufacture all their products using a specially formulated polypropylene material with a minimum thickness of 10/12mm. This sustainable material allows Taplanes to take their products back at the end of its life cycle, regrind it, re-thermoform it and then re-use it. Each bespoke construction does not use any substitute material for strength, under-carriage support or component fixing, nor does the system carry any exposed sealant, grout or tiling which can be a costly, an on-going maintenance issue, and can also attract bacteria. The Taplanes material is tested and approved by an NHS test Laboratory as bacteria free and also totally inert. Their patented horizontal joint system is designed to prevent any capillary action allowing for the whole ensuite system to be taken in and out of the allotted room as many times as needed without invalidating the guarantee.

New Sound Absorbing Acoustic Panel System From RMIG A new range of wall mounted and free-standing sound absorbing panels has been launched by RMIG for use in building interiors to reduce noise and reverberations caused by hard surfaces to improve sound quality in schools, public buildings, offices and a range of other applications. The ‘Wall’ range of compact acoustic panels is designed to improve the environment in buildings where echoes or high sound pressure levels cause unacceptable noise and make it difficult to distinguish speech in areas including sports halls, classrooms and open plan commercial buildings, for example. By using a highly efficient sound absorption material faced with thin sheet steel incorporating thousands of 1.5mm perforations, mounted in an aluminium frame, the RMIG Wall system reduces sound in the 125Hz to 4kHz frequency band and achieves an absorption levels of between 75% and 100% across the 500Hz to 2kHz range. Wall 100 acoustic panels are designed to be easily wall mounted and can be used as an unobtrusive magnetic notice board, while the Wall 200 is a free-standing acoustic partition divider that not only absorbs sound, but also provides a physical barrier between areas, such as office workstations. While the free standing Wall 200 panels are 1200mm high and 908mm wide, the Wall 100 system panels measure 908mm x 604m, making them easier to handle and wall mount using just two fixing screws. In addition to the standard RAL colours of black or white together with a powder coated aluminium look finish, RMIG Wall panels can be specified in a range of PPC finishes as well as having the ability to incorporate printed photographic images or special designs, such as company logos, graphics or patterns. www.rmig.com Enquiry No 30 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

FERMACELL’S NEW GREENLINE PRODUCT LEADS THE WAY ON REDUCING VOC’S Fermacell, the market leader in gypsum fibre board, is launching a revolutionary new product called ‘Greenline’ at Ecobuild (Stand N861) to tackle the health issue of VOCs (volatile organic compounds). VOCs are potentially harmful gases that can be found in many of today’s materials and products including building materials and furnishings, paints, lacquers, cleaning compounds, glues and adhesives. Standard Fermacell and Greenline boards provide fire, acoustic and impact performance often with less layers than plasterboard with the added benefit of the reduction of reinforcement and the ability to fix fittings directly to the boards. Fermacell boards are finished with Fine Surface Treatment that reduces wet trades achieving a skim finish in a fraction of the time. The main difference between standard Fermacell and ‘Greenline’ is the addition of a natural additive that absorbs VOCs leaching out of compounds as gases. Fermacell Greenline not only reduces hazardous materials like formaldehyde, but helps remove unpleasant smells such as cigarette smoke. Enquiry No 36 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

Benefits of Greenline include: Providing the same performance as regular Fermacell Improvement of living environment Increase in BREEAM rating (as with standard Fermacell) Possible BREEAM innovation credit Andrew Richardson, Technical Manager for Fermacell, commented: “The effects of VOCs on health have not – to date – been taken as seriously as they might have been. The issue of VOC’s is now moving towards the top of the agenda and over the next five years tackling this issue will become increasingly important. Improving the living environment is one of the main

drivers for Fermacell in developing a board which can absorb VOCs, further demonstrating Fermacell’s commitment to meeting modern construction challenges.” Fermacell Marketing Manager David Prout commented: “Greenline is an exciting development which re-enforces Fermcell’s position as an innovative company. Since people today spend most of their time at home or in an office, long-term exposure to VOCs in the indoor environment can contribute to Sick Building Syndrome, so good ventilation and air conditioning systems are helpful in reducing VOC emissions. One of the most common VOCs is the chemical formaldehyde, which becomes a gas at room temperature. Formaldehyde can be found in a wide range of materials including wood based manufactured boards such as MDF, chipboard and plywood, which can ‘outgas’ this compound as well as other VOCs.” Some of the side effects of formaldehyde can include irritation to the eyes, nose and throat, through to headaches, dizziness and nausea. www.fermacell.co.uk Enquiry No 37 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

210 Attempts To Get Just Right! It’s not unusual when developing new products to test numerous prototypes before coming up with a final formulation. But when German industrialist Dr. Kemper developed the world’s first elastomeric cold liquid waterproofing in the late 1960’s it can be fairly said that he took this to the extreme! At the time, glass-fibre was the membrane typically used for liquid waterproofing, yet whilst this was flexible in one direction, it had no lateral elasticity which meant resistance to movement and thermal expansion was poor. In his search for a product that combined tensile strength, elasticity and permeability Dr. Kemper developed a unique system comprising polyester fleece and resins which together formed an exceptionally durable waterproofing membrane that was seamless, would bond to almost any substrate and offered permanent elasticity. He trialled no less than 210 formulations in developing this final product, which was then brand-named “Version 210. Kemperol V210 remains to this day the world’s leading professional waterproofing system, with the earliest installations now approaching their 40th year of continuous protection. www.kempersystem.co.uk

Glidevale Achieves BM TRADA Q-Mark For Roof Underlays

Top Notch Rainwater Systems – From Polypipe Polypipe Building Products has launched its enhanced and extended Elegance cast iron effect uPVC rainwater system with the addition of the revolutionary notched gutter concept for its new Ogee profile to add to the original and already popular half round profile. The Elegance range has been designed in such a way that each profile in the range utilises a common downpipe. It has also launched a new range of soil and vent products in a matching cast iron effect finish. The new notched Ogee profile guttering provides a secure fit and counters the problem of gutters becoming dislodged from their retaining clips during warm weather due to heat expansion.

Glidevale Ltd has been awarded the prestigious BM TRADA Q-Mark certification for vapour permeable - Protect VP 400, Protect Zytec and Protect RICA VP - and non vapour permeable - Protect A1 and Protect Wunderlay - roof underlays. BM TRADA assessor Niresh Somlie visited all the manufacturing facilities, including the company’s Nottingham factory which undertakes lamination of the finished products, to conduct audits for the new Q-Mark certifications. Joint Managing Director Neil Rideout said, “Having products with one certification body is more efficient from a management and product knowledge point of view. To the best of our knowledge, Glidevale was the first membranes supplier to achieve the Q-Mark in 2010, giving further endorsement of the quality, performance and fitness for purpose of our materials. Since then we have been progressively transferring our independent product certification to BM TRADA, firstly with membranes for use in the timber frame industry, then gas protection and now with our range of roofing underlays. Enquiry No 42 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

SECONDARY GLAZING FOR NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART HIGH DEPENDENCY NEO-NATAL UNIT

Enquiry No 47 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

Reflecting the very latest in hospital design, the £226 million, 513 single bed roomed New Tunbridge Wells Hospital built in Pembury in Kent has been designed to address key issues, including patient privacy, dignity and infection control. Commissioned by The Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, the new hospital features a dedicated Women and Children’s unit, into which a Level 2 NeoNatal Unit has been provided to care for babies who require special and high dependency care. The Unit can also look after up to three babies requiring neonatal intensive care nursing. The imposing new full height primary windows have been supplemented with an additional secondary window for a number of reasons - to provide better control over the internal environment, offer additional guarding and allow remote controlled privacy blinds to be installed in a protected space. Selectaglaze worked in conjunction with the main contractor to develop a design that met all criteria. Most windows have

been treated with the Series 40 range of hinged and fixed panels. These have a chamfer bead to avoid dust ledges and the hinged unit has purpose designed flush hinges and a flush lock with a minimal escutcheon plate to ensure the cleanest surface. The units are glazed with 8.8mm laminated glass to meet safety levels and electrically controlled blinds ensure that privacy can be introduced without breaching the environment. The secondary windows were finished in a grey powder paint to match the external framing. Selectaglaze has more than 40 years experience working within hospitals and healthcare establishments mostly to create clean or secure environments but also to improve building energy performance and reduce noise nuisance in busy city centre sites. Applications include laboratories; high dependency units, operating theatres, clean rooms and more general areas including wards. Security can be particularly important for laboratories and a high security range has been certified to Loss Prevention Certification Board standard LPS 1175 at levels 1, 2 and 3. The units are purpose made with a wide choice of styles and finishes. They are fully factory assembled and glazed to allow rapid installation. Secondary windows are generally fitted as apart of a refurbishment or upgrade of premises but are equally applicable to new developments requiring very specific performance as with the Pembury project. www.selectaglaze.co.uk Enquiry No 44 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

Super efficient SL 97 folding glass door launched Efficient use of the energy that is developed within the home is important in keeping our energy costs under control. One area where energy can be lost is the window/door areas of the home yet at the same time we like to ensure that we maximise the amount of available light in the home, particularly over the winter period. Sustainability of the environment both externally and within the home is vital if we are to minimise heating costs. The launch of a super efficient folding glass door marks a significant development in this important area. Solarlux have launched their most efficient glass door to the UK market. Combining four core elements that enable the door to achieve a U value of 0.80Wm2K, the new SL97 is the first wood/aluminium folding glass door with an integrated thermal layer to be launched onto the market and is specially designed with the demands of energy saving in mind. By using wood on the interior and a combination of insulating material and protective aluminium on the outside as well as triple glazing, the SL 97 from Solarlux has been able to combine the advantages of four materials in a single product. Inside the room, the wood panels create a natural warm atmosphere and, on the outside, the fully insulated rear-ventilated aluminium facing sheets guarantee permanent protection from the elements with only minimal maintenance requirements.

In addition to flood risk, large amounts of surface water run-off can cause water quality problems. As water runs over hard urban surfaces, it picks up pollutants that are washed into water courses. For example, run-off from roads contains heavy metals and hydrocarbons which can seriously impact on water quality. A well planned drainage infrastructure helps to manage water run-off by preventing domestic properties and other spaces such as paved public areas, car-parks, driveways and roads acting as conduits for run-off water. And it is more sustainable to manage storm water in a way that allows it to permeate naturally through the ground where it falls rather than being directed into already overloaded drains and public sewers. Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) Sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) provide an alternative approach to piped systems. Whereas piped systems are characterised by a limited capacity, SUDS solutions such as permeable paving enable water to soak away from the surface where it falls, mimicking natural drainage processes. By reducing run-off volumes and encouraging recharge of the natural groundwater at source, they mitigate many of the adverse impacts of storm water run-off on the environment in terms of both volume and pollutants. At the heart of the philosophy is the need to address three key concerns: water quantity, water quality and biodiversity. By considering these three factors known as the ‘SUDS Triangle’ when designing developments, it becomes possible to create drainage systems that provide natural water quality treatment, encourage infiltration, reduce the impact of peak flows and minimise impacts on the local habitats of both communities and wildlife. Indeed, as a major legislatory step towards improving both flood risk management and the way we manage our water resources, The Flood and Water Management Act 2010 seeks to define clearer roles, responsibilities and standards for the creation of sustainable drainage systems in line with proposed flood risk management strategies.

Marshalls Water Management Solutions Rain never seems too far away in the UK, but as our climate changes we can expect more extreme downpours - especially through warmer and wetter winter months. While annual average rainfall may decrease slightly, the seasonal distribution of precipitation will change significantly, with winters seeing an increase in rainfall of up to 30%. An increase in extreme weather events, where winter storms will become more frequent, has also been forecast. And - as we’ve seen over the last few years - more intense rainfall means a higher risk of flooding. Under natural conditions, most of the water that falls as rain soaks into the ground or gets carried away by rivers. But in urban areas, the built environment alters the natural drainage of water, with hard surfaces increasing both the rate and amount of rainwater that turns into runoff. And it has to go somewhere. Traditional piped ‘drains’ have a limited capacity to cope with the high levels of surface water generated by extreme rainfall events. And, when the capacity of one or more parts of the drainage system is exceeded, the worst happens.

Whilst the act places responsibility for managing SUDS on Local Authorities’ SUDS Advisory Boards, responsibility for the specification, design, implementation and maintenance of SUDS schemes remains shared between local government, drainage planners and hydraulic engineers, town planners and civil engineers, land-owners, developers and even homeowners. With so many stakeholders involved, decisions about new developments and increasingly essential water management systems can be taken without a complete understanding of surface water risks - or the most effective solutions. Hence, everyone involved in creating our built environment bears some responsibility in implementing water management strategies to meet our changing climatic conditions. As such, each must play their part and work together. Wherever you sit in the water management process, Marshalls has the depth of expertise and wide choice of high performance drainage products to help you create more effective sustainable water management plans to meet your obligations. Marshalls fully supports DEFRA’s vision for water policy and management where, by 2030 at the latest, we can sustainably manage risks from flooding. And if those of us responsible for the development of urban spaces are to maintain our quality of life while protecting the environment, we must take action now. www.marshalls.co.uk/watermanagement Enquiry No 59 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

For example, in the floods of June 2007 extreme rainfall in the Midlands and the north of England led to large-scale urban flooding, with over 55,000 properties affected: two thirds of these from surface water run-off overloading drainage systems.

OPINION|DOORS Advances in door technology improves aesthetics, performance, and safety ANGEL PURON, GENERAL MANAGER, PIVOTAN

During the last few years, there have been many exciting developments in the aesthetics of the humble interior door. Design and haute couture have stamped their mark quite firmly, with some of the industry icons lending their names to an item previously considered a commodity product. Suddenly Doors Are Sexy! The finest solid woods are now combined to create unique and stunning finishes in shades to complement or contrast interior décor, or a highly lacquered ‘piano finish’ in a spectrum of colours can be applied for an on-trend contemporary look, wood, glass and metal can be married or juxtaposed to create a piece of art. As much as the common door has evolved into a piece of fashionable wall art through imagination and innovation, there have been fewer technological advances. A door is still a door – it fits the frame, it provides a barrier and privacy between rooms, 44

it opens and it closes – to greater or lesser effect. Door performance can be hit and miss, but the most common problem is that over a period of time, many doors ‘drop’ on their hinges, thus requiring re-hanging which usually compromises on-going performance. Safety has always been a problem with any door or door set. Due to the nature of the square-edge door and square-edge door frame, a gap is inherent, and that gap can trap fingers. A problem heightened in kindergartens, schools and where children or large volumes of people are present, such as public buildings. The Hinge Is Dead! One company has made major advances in tackling this problem of safety, by throwing away the common hinge and developing a unique and patented no-hinge technology which offers considerable advantages to anyone designing, specifying or managing interior

doors. Pivotan’s advanced no-hinge technology is a new concept in the UK - and early trials show that these innovative door sets are being met with enthusiasm by a broad professional audience. The system should not be compared or confused with concealed hinges, which cannot match either the performance or beauty of the new no-hinge door. Form Following Function. This principle associated with modern architecture and industrial design is certainly true of these innovative doors without hinges concept, where the search for a safer, higher performance door, has resulted in a door of outstanding quality and beauty. Instead of traditional square-edge construction, Pivotan’s technology utilises round edges on both door leaf and door frame, which when combined leaves no open gaps where fingers can be trapped, and gives a most beautiful harmonious softness to

its appearance, which incidentally is reflecting today’s trend for soft curves rather than harsh angles. The door functions through an exclusive, patented pivoting system which fixes the door leaf to the frame on top and bottom – not on the side as a traditional hinge. On the bottom, a routable element supports the door weight and fixes it to the frame and floor. This element incorporates Teflon a material that is highly resistant to wear by friction, thus alleviating irritating scraping or squeaking noise. On the top, a routable hinge containing a sprung pivot point, fixes the door leaf to the upper and lateral frame, so in opening and closing, the door pivots, rather than moving around a hinge. Doors Without Hinges – A Win, Win For Everyone. Doors without hinges offer designers, specifiers, facilities managers, public building and homeowners with a number of key benefits:

• The rounded door and frame edges look beautiful, are perfect in contemporary surroundings, and they become a focal point in their own right. • Wherever people pass through doors, the opportunity to trap fingers is completely eliminated, as the round door edge and door frame effectively ‘fills’ the gap that would be present with a traditional door. • Installation is faster and easier – typically an experienced fitter can install a standard Pivotan door set in 45 minutes, and because they are supplied as a complete door set, the need for time-consuming woodworking is alleviated. • Maintenance is faster and easier – if the door leaf needs removing for any reason, it is a oneman, 2-minute operation using just a small screwdriver. • Because the weight of the door is directed downwards, rather than on a traditional hinge, the door will not ‘drop’ thus alleviating the need for time-consuming remedial and maintenance

work. • For kindergartens, schools, homes for elderly people and anywhere where there are high volumes of people passing through doors, an additional guard of reinforced rubber can be inset into the door edge – this gives additional safety but does not compromise the aesthetics of the door. Pivotan door sets are manufactured to meet all relevant European standards. Catalogue request, further information, reference sites can be seen at www.pivotan.com

OPINION|INSULATION Evolving Design Techniques Support Energy Efficiency Aims For Affordable Housing Author: Kirsten Parrish, Construction Writer

Norfolk-based Parsons & Whittley architects employed Passivhaus principles in the design of what is set to be the UK’s first rural affordable housing scheme to gain Passivhaus certification in Wimbish, Essex. A 14 dwelling Hastoe Housing Association development underway in the village of Wimbish, Essex, at first sight looks like many other small schemes of its type – but take a closer look at the design and detailing and it becomes clear that this could in fact be a blueprint for such developments in years to come. Aiming for completion in Spring 2011, the greenfield scheme is being built under the exception site policy to address local housing need, with funding from the Homes and Communities Agency and investment from Hastoe. People will need strong local connections to be housed and no-one will be able to buy more than 80% of their home. Besides providing much-needed affordable homes for a rural community, the scheme is also aiming for high levels of sustainability, a potential way forward in addressing the pressing issue of fuel poverty as well as addressing climate change 46

concerns. The houses, a mixture of homes for rent and shared ownership, are designed to be super energy efficient, and will not only comply with Passivhaus principles but also meet the demands of Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. Passivhaus standard buildings retain the heat created within the dwelling as well as from passive solar gain, eliminating the need for central heating and reducing fuel costs. The standard requires very high levels of insulation (in order to meet U-values of below 0.15 W/m2K for walls, roof and floor), a design that makes the most of solar energy and superb sealing throughout. Promoted by the Passivhaus Institute in Darmstadt, Germany, there are around 25,000 Passivhaus buildings worldwide, the vast majority of them in Germany and Austria. The approach is rapidly growing in popularity in the UK as developers and designers strive to meet zero carbon targets. Of course Passivhaus standards were originally developed against European norms where floor areas tend to be larger. Adapting the standards for affordable housing in the UK where floor

areas are smaller due to cost and space pressures means careful consideration must be given to design. It can also mean raising the bar on materials performance in order to meet required elemental values and air tightness demands. Parsons & Whittley’s design for the development - which is being built by Passivhaus construction expert Bramall Construction and assessed against Passivhaus standards by specialist consultancy Inbuilt – is simple without unnecessary steps and staggers which add to the heat loss area and complicate the design and construction process. A number of construction options were evaluated before finally adopting 190mm solid Aircrete external walls wrapped externally in 285mm of Neopor rendered insulation. With insulation running under the reinforced concrete ground floor slab and conventional standard trussed rafter roofs supporting 500mm Crown Loft Roll, the construction details have been kept simple and effective, meaning they can easily be replicated at future sites. Key to effective insulation of the buildings was the specification of Dow Building Solutions FLOORMATE 300-A STYROFOAM-A insulation

to run below the entire concrete floor slab of the structures. Installing insulation below the slab helps create an ‘envelope’ of continuous insulation which minimises heat loss, requiring a material which can maintain strength and good thermal performance, even when used externally. FLOORMATE 300-A has a design load of 130 kN/ m2 and is highly durable with excellent moistureresistance and compressive strength, enabling the insulation to perform outside the waterproofing envelope. Installing insulation below the slab also helps to avoid thermal bridges at floor and wall junctions and makes the most of precious internal space, meaning it is fast becoming recognised as an effective way of insulating new buildings. Dwelling forms have been kept deliberately simple at the Hastoe development to avoid thermal bridging risks, and porches, meter boxes and Brise Soleil are all independently supported to avoid penetrating the insulation overcoat. East-West orientation of the blocks facilitates passive solar gains, with careful attention to shading to avoid summer overheating. The design and construction methods also assisted the incredibly low air tightness requirement of 0.6 air changes per hour, with internal wet plaster

providing the majority of the barrier and all joins covered in specialist membranes or tapes. Furthermore, specialist thermal modelling was undertaken by Inbuilt to calculate thermal bridges and advise on the impact of small changes to the design. For example, the crucial impact of small changes to window designs was modelled in advance to help value-engineer the project and feed into the specification of future sites. Everything was detailed at 1:2 in order to convey the importance of air tightness and to assist the accuracy of the Passivhaus Planning Package (PHPP) modelling.

As well as following Passivhaus principles in order to gain certification and following Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, Bramall is building the Wimbish development to: the Homes and Communities Agency’s Design and Quality Standards and Strategy; the Joseph Rowntree Foundation standard Lifetime Homes and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment’s Building for Life standard.

Of course design and build is one thing – the dwellings also need to stand up to the rigours of everyday life. The choice of servicing strategy had to balance familiarity for residents, availability of components, client requirements and cost, and conventional gas boilers were eventually selected. These are being coupled to large thermal stores to prevent cycling and will be supplemented by solar thermal systems. The thermal stores will supply domestic hot water as well as feeding topup heat via a duct heater into the air supplied by a heat recovery ventilation system.

OPINION|FIRE SAFETY GLASS Doing More With Less By David Jolliffe, managing director of leading fire safety glass manufacturer, CGI International

Doing more with less is certainly the order of the day – public sector spending cuts are continuing to impact on all corners of UK commerce and the construction supply chain is already feeling the effects. In times of reduced budgets, it’s important to avoid taking a dramatic step backwards in product specification and to continue investing in the best you can. After all the cost of getting it wrong, both to peoples’ lives and buildings, is impossible to put a price on. Fire glass products can be grouped into three main categories. The first is integrity only (E) which prevents flames and hot gasses from spreading for a specified time – typically from 30 to 60 minutes. The second is integrity and insulating glass (EI) which has the same ability as integrity glass but also restricts the temperature transfer to the unexposed face in the fire. The third option is integrity and radiation control glass (EW) which provides radiant heat control and significantly reduces the amount of heat transmitting through the glass. 48

Most common materials will ignite spontaneously once temperatures reach 500-600ºC, meaning that even if the fire is contained in an adjoining room, catastrophic damage and further spread of fire can take place on the safe side if an Integrity only (E) glass is used. For those experiencing budgetary pressures, integrity and radiation control glass (EW) can provide a superb mid-way alternative to the integrity and full insulation (EI) fire glasses, offering considerably better performance than integrity only (E), but without the higher cost. For advice and support on the best product for the job and your budget, you should seek advice directly from your glass supplier or contractor. The cost of fire damage has been rising steadily for the last decade and, coupled with figures which show that arson attacks increase in a recession, fire safety protection has never been more critical. www.pyroguard.eu T: +44 1942 710720

Howe Green’s modular channel drain systems have been specified and installed at Gateshead Council’s brand new and recently opened Heworth Leisure Centre and Blaydon Leisure and Primary Care Centre. The contracts were secured following the success of a bespoke drainage solution Howe Green created originally for the £8million refurbishment of Gateshead Leisure Centre. Working with main contractor Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd, a reduced depth drainage unit was engineered with special footings and adjusted outlets in order for it to sit flush with tiled flooring in showering and changing areas. It was manufactured in 316 stainless steel and to a special width so as to accommodate a plastic cover, rather than a standard stainless steel cover, which was deemed to be more accommodating to the end users needs. This tailor-made drainage system provided a highly efficient and highly cost effective solution for Gateshead Leisure Centre and as a result, exactly the same specification was chosen for the Council’s new leisure centres at Heworth and Blaydon as well as the redeveloped Dunston Leisure Centre. Blaydon Leisure and Primary Care Centre re-opened its doors earlier this year featuring an impressive 6 lane, 25m pool and a 317sqm state of the art gym. Heworth Leisure Centre was opened in November and boasts a FlowRider indoor surfing and body boarding system, which is the first of its kind in the north of England. All projects form part of Gateshead Council’s Building an Active Future (BaAF) programme, which involves a £39million investment in the area to help improve the health of residents by 2030. The HG100 system is ideal for changing rooms, shower areas, spas, kitchens, surgeries and anywhere that requires effective and reliable drainage. It can be fitted into all types of floor – including ceramic tiles, resin and PVC and sits flush with the floor to create a safe and hygienic environment. It is also built to last and will withstand up to 3 tonne pneumatic wheel loads. www.howegreen.com

The building has achieved a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating with features such as heating sourced from a biomass boiler and four large wind towers on the roof to aid natural ventilation. The design features a concourse that expresses informal meeting rooms and incorporates a projection screen to display students’ work. There was a heavy emphasis on use of recycled material and a high proportion of materials used were themselves specified for the ability to be recycled when replaced. Media and cultural studies’ research at Goldsmiths University of London has been recognised as ‘industry leading’ for the past two decades. Indeed, the University’s Media and Communications Department has been placed among the top four in the country and is considered by most authorities to be ‘World Leading’.

Timberline Works Well At Wirksworth An improved access scheme including a ramp and balustrade at Wirksworth Library in Derbyshire has become the latest of many projects to specify Timberline, a new wood-effect handrail and balustrade system from Neaco. Manufactured from aluminium with a beautiful powder coated reproduction of natural wood grain, Timberline brings the aesthetic virtues of timber without the environmental, hygiene and maintenance concerns associated with it. Derbyshire County Council selected Timberline in light oak to complement the library’s traditional aesthetic. “Everyone is delighted with the choice of Timberline,” said Tim Leteve Disability projects officer at Derbyshire County Council’s Property Division, Design Services. “To use real wood handrails we would probably have needed to source the stanchions and glass panels from a different supplier, but with Neaco we could specify all the necessary components from one manufacturer. The wood-effect system offers another advantage because, unlike real wood, it’s maintenance-free.” Neaco’s balustrade range can also be specified in a wide choice of solid and metallic colours or satin polished stainless steel. In the case of The University of Reading‘s Stenton and Mackinder Hall buildings Morgan Sindall was the main contractor. Each individual kitchen was equipped with a Beko oven, hob, extract hood and an upright fridge-freezer. As is normal on contracts of this scale, JPD worked with the rest of the project team on the creation of prototype kitchen which the university’s architect and property management department could inspect and fine tune. The Managing Director of JPD Contracts, John Evans, comments: “We have been dealing with Beko for some three years now and will have seen our business with the manufacturer grow by 30 per cent in the past year. Not only do we get good service from Beko, but they are the right products at the right price for the current market.

Beko’s commitment to product reliability, a dependable delivery programme and technical support is a real asset to us”. “Our client base includes the UK’s top 10 housebuilders while we work extensively with the public sector, and Reading University is just one of a number of student accommodation contracts we have completed recently in conjunction with Beko. The appliances are delivered to our main distribution warehouse and then our teams of fitters take them to site where they then gas, wire and precommission everything before taking away the packaging and any rubbish. Stenton Hall had 50 cluster kitchens, and Mackinder 72, done in three and six phases respectively, where we had up to four teams working at any one time.” The University of Reading project was completed and handed over ready for the start of the current academic year. Tarkett Offers A Dramatic Finish For Henry Beaufort School

Passivhaus Principles For Affordable Housing

The Henry Beaufort School in Winchester has recently benefited from the installation of Tarkett sports flooring to its drama facilities. The Beacon Arts Centre is the school’s base for Art, Drama and Music and features modern, well-equipped facilities. Tarkett sports flooring was chosen to replace the worn-out carpets in the two drama rooms to provide a high performance, durable and attractive finish. Floor Sure carried out the installation of around 200m2 of Tarkett’s Omnisports Reference flooring throughout the two drama rooms, which can be opened up into one large studio via a folding wall. Tarkett’s Omnisports Reference is a specialist indoor sports surface, developed for all levels of sports competition, that complies with the requirements of the European Standard EN 14904. It features a fibreglass mesh backing that offers optimal indentation resistance and low internal stress levels within the playing surface, distributing the stress evenly. It may also be loose-laid, enabling the flooring to be recycled at end of life and the subfloor to be reused without further preparation. When fully bonded, as at Henry Beaufort School, Omnisports Reference provides 27% impact absorption, and 26% when loose-laid.

Norfolk-based Parsons & Whittley architects have employed Passivhaus principles in the design of what is set to be the UK’s first rural affordable housing scheme to gain Passivhaus certification in Wimbish, Essex. Key to effective insulation of the development was the specification of Dow Building Solutions’ FLOORMATE 300-A STYROFOAM-A insulation to run below the entire concrete floor slab of the structures. Installing insulation below the slab helps create an ‘envelope’ of continuous insulation which minimises heat loss. www.styrofoam.co.uk www.wimbishpassivhaus.com Enquiry No 71 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

95 Gresham Street is a gem in the heart of the City of London. The £35 million refurbishment of the site makes extensive and impressive use of glass and steel to contrast with the existing external facade of Portland Stone. And for the glazing element, Crittall Windows supplied and installed its Corporate 2000 and W20 profiles for optimum visual impact and long lasting performance. The installation of the new windows was a like-for-like replacement, with the Crittall profiles helping to retain the character and traditional appearance of the external facade, whilst at the same time providing modern, advanced glazed units that comply with all thermal and energy efficient requirements. Crittall’s involvement extended beyond just supplying the profiles, as architect, George Corrigan of architects, Rolfe Judd explained. “95 Gresham Street actually comprises both Princes House and Bartlett House,” he said. “One of the tasks that Crittall Windows was faced with was to refurbish the cast iron framing and panels to some of the fenestration in Bartlett House prior to installing the new profiles. This was done successfully, with the rest of the replacement window project completed on time and to the standards required for this conservation area. Crittall’s ability to offer this complementary service greatly contributed to the smooth progression of the scheme.” Enquiry No 78 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

World’s best tall building boasts windows from Sapa Building System Recently awarded the accolade of ‘World’s Best Tall Building, Broadcasting Place in Leeds has benefited from the specialist fenestration system designed and produced by Sapa Building System. “We are very proud to have played a part in designing and supplying the unique window systems required in the architect’s design brief,” said Jon Palethorpe, Commercial Director of Sapa Building System. “To have it chosen as the winner of the annual ‘Best Tall Building’ awards is a great honour.” The competition was organized by the Chicagobased Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, with Broadcasting Place beating off stiff competition from Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. A mixed use development for Leeds Metropolitan University and property group Downing, some of the building’s diversity comes from the expression of the fenestration which encorporates integrated lowenergy design. The apparently random patterns were composed to ensure that the vertically modulated cuts provided an orientation-specific balance of daylight penetration and solar gain reduction.

CURTAIN WALLING FROM STRUCTURA UK FOR TEDDINGTON SCHOOL Curtain walling by Structura UK Ltd was specified for the £32m development and rebuilding of Teddington School on its existing site for the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. The new 2/3-storey, purpose-built complex was designed by BDP and boasts two new teaching blocks, dining and media area, workshop and art block, and sports hall to provide this 1,200-pupil, co-educational comprehensive with a spacious, modern, safe teaching and learning environment. The result is a building with irregular sides which maximises natural light without creating overheating. The design of the glazing system was chosen to complement the dramatic aesthetic of the corten steel panels, with the vertical, non-uniform fenestration patterns designed to evoke the idea of erosion within the monumental mass of steel volumes, capturing the essence of the rugged Yorkshire landscape.

“Sapa’s Dualframe Window Wall system allowed us to fully realize this apparently random window pattern,” said architect Simon Carter of Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, London. “We developed a series of standard modular windows, of either 500mm or 1000mm widths, which could then be arranged in different ways to achieve the undulating vertical strips of glass. Dark grey frames and grey back-painted spandrel panels were selected to further emphasise the contrast between solid steel and more transparent glass.” For the majority of the lowest two levels of the building a SAPA silicon-glazed curtain walling system was specified, including a long-span system with two-storey integral steel mullions which form a dramatic enclosure to the Baptist Church which is housed in the building. “Overall, the quality and detailing of the SAPA systems have helped to complement our vision for the architecture of the scheme,” said Simon Carter. The £50 million Broadcasting Place scheme comprises approximately 110,000sq ft of teaching and office space as well as a church, a café and exhibition, and 240 student bedrooms and post graduate studio accommodation and offices. The development safeguards the preservation of the historic Grade II Listed Broadcasting House, as well as creating a new Baptist Church for the local community. www.sapabuildingsystems.co.uk Enquiry No 80 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

THROUGH THE ROOF AT HONLEY! As domestic roofs go they don’t get much more complex than the one that’s taken shape at a new build property in Honley near Huddersfield! The stunning five-bedroom residence, being constructed by local builder John Marsden, owner of J P Marsden Construction Ltd as his family home, has utilised U-Roof, an innovative cold rolled steel roofing system targeted at architects, housebuilders and self build enthusiasts.

Triangles Of Light Newly opened Darwen Academy is one of many state-ofthe-art schools designed by Aedas architects under the BSF programme. This project, opened last September, is designed to be a showcase to demonstrate how superior design and a crafted interior environment can enhance the learning process. It is also one of many new UK schools which incorporate Kalwall roofing or cladding. One of the most unusual features is the dramatic roofscape over the central atrium. This is divided into large coffered sections pieced by 36 triangular Kalwall skylights. Externally, the single slope units, 6.9m wide across the base, are set within a sedum roof covering. Because of the large area specified, over 400 sqm, the skylights could be specially fabricated by the Kalwall Corporation of America to reflect the non-standard grid design conceived by the architects. Unlike glass or polycarbonate rooflights, Kalwall is manufactured with fibreglass which diffuses daylight and distributes it evenly across the interior without shadows or glare. The panels have inherent rigidity and impact resistance, are largely self-cleaning and because, dirt is less obvious than on glass, frequency of maintenance is reduced.

John was keen to generate as much attic space as possible across the span of the build and he was delighted with the end result: “We looked at all sorts of other options but none had the flexibility or ability to fulfil the brief until we came across U-Roof. The roof is quite a large and complicated one for a new build with steep pitches and I was struggling to make any headway with truss manufactures until I tried U-Roof for a quote. I wanted to create attic accommodation and trusses were proving far too complicated with all the steel beams required and the truss people didn’t seem to want the challenge!” “To assemble the main roof structure took around two days for the floor joists, three days for the roof panels with the help of a teleporter and extending jib with the fine tuning taking another couple of days. With trusses those timescales would have been doubled or trebled. There were not any complications as the whole U-Roof system screwed together as kit form. I was amazed at how the software produces a structure with the exact dimensions required. No need for a joiner on site and no need for specialist tools or skilled contractors,” added John. The system’s inventor and Director David Thurston, an engineer who hit on the idea whilst on holiday in South Africa, commented: “The main issues we had with this project were the sheer complexities of the roof design with 15 different roof surfaces and two different pitches used. In addition we were catering for the loadings imposed from a ¾ size snooker table and two different eaves levels. The specification also required us to incorporate exposed timbers as a feature at eaves level known as sprocketed eaves. The solution we provided was by fixing the rafters over the ends of the U-Roof panels and within the thickness of the warm roof insulation. This enabled the contractor to position the timbers evenly around the building to create the desired effect. John would have had difficulty achieving this using traditional methods particularly considering the complexity of roof plan.” www.u-roof.com

VMZINC Hits The Heights At Heron Tower

rainline sustainable rainwater systems in steel

Rainline – no matter what the colour, it will always be green

Heron Tower is undoubtedly set to become one of the best known landmarks on the central London skyline. The VMZINC PLUS® standing seam system was used on the 38th and 41st floor roofs of the 46 storey building, making it among the tallest in which the ‘compact warm roof’ system has been used. VMZINC PLUS needs no supporting ventilation, so views are not spoiled by unsightly vents across the span. Precise wind loading calculations were required for fixing, and it was important that the specified metal should present no visual interference to aircraft. Pre-weathered QUARTZ-ZINC® was the perfect choice as its natural patina continues to develop over time while also offering an exceptional standard of colour retention. In addition to its use with cellular glass, VMZINC PLUS can be used with mineral wool, PIR and composite insulation boards, using panels in either straight or curved profile up to 13 metres in length.

In Sweden they know a thing or two about manufacturing sustainable building products and their impact on the environment, so it’s not surprising that Lindab’s Rainline carbon footprint is significantly lower than many of the rainwater systems currently on the market. This combined with high performance, quality and competitive pricing makes Rainline one of the most effective and ‘green’ solutions for the control of rain drainage on all types of buildings.

Stannah first choice for Olympic views It’s lime green and made entirely from recycled shipping containers. It’s also the funkiest location yet for a Stannah Midilift SL vertical platform lift. It’s the View Tube – a social enterprise and community centre located on The Greenway in Stratford, East London – home to the best views of the Olympic Park as it gears up for the planet’s biggest sporting event: the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In use since the View Tube opened in November 2009, the Midilift SL operates over a distance of 2900mm between the entrance foyer and the first floor. It brings easy access for all visitors and staff, whatever their level of mobility, to the venue’s facilities. These include the award-winning Container Café on the ground floor, the first-floor education area, and the allimportant viewing balcony of the Olympic Park, the Velodrome, Aquatics Centre and Stratford City. Once again, Stannah Lifts was first choice for the View Tube architects, Urban Space Management. This London-based practice has used Stannah on the majority of their creative and economic regeneration solutions for which they are so well known, as USM Project Manager, Ebru Buyuksural, explains: “The View Tube is a fine example of our Container City™ system of innovative, modular solutions for low cost housing, retail, workshop and community uses. In common with the majority of our projects, we specified Stannah Lifts because they always have the best lift to fit our purpose – well designed and engineered, delivered and installed on time and in budget, performing to the required standard, and with a Lift Services capability to maximise the lift’s lifetime. The Midilift SL in the View Tube is no exception – a cost-effective, hydraulic platform lift that is bringing easy access to the many facilities on offer in this distinctive community centre with outstanding views of the Olympic Park and surrounding area.” Supplied within a structure-supported enclosure, the Midilift SL is easy to install. It is also simple and safe to operate. With a rated load of 400kg (4 persons), the platform is controlled by constant pressure buttons and has a maximum travel of 5m at a speed of circa 0.08m/s. A range of optional extras ensures maximum design and performance flexibility to suit any application. As with all Stannah passenger lifts, the Midilift SL ensures the premises’ owners meet with the requirements of the Equality Act 2010. Stannah has helped the View Tube prepare for the upcoming Olympic & Paralympic Games by providing an accessible venue and by supporting the View Tube community gardening project, which will be supplying herbs and vegetables for the on-site Container Café, as View Tube Manager, Rosie Murdoch, comments: “Stannah has contributed to the development and success of the View Tube – for the local community and beyond. Not only is the Midilift SL helping everyone access our first-storey facilities – especially the Olympic Park viewing balcony – but their generous donation towards our landscaping will certainly help showcase this unusual container-built community centre, making the whole View Tube experience even more enjoyable. Residents Thankful For ‘White Light’ Scheme In Hackney Urbis’ Sapphire luminaire has reduced light spillage and made an estate in the london borough of hackney feel much safer at night. The original 100W SON lamps on the Datchler Estate in Hackney were leaving much of the ground in relative darkness due to high spillage levels. Denise Hill, Electrical Services Manager for Hackney Homes, commented, “we decided to invest in a new lighting solution and looked at the products offered by a number of manufacturers. We decided to use Urbis’ Sapphire, fitted with 70W CDM-T lamps, as it would provide the lighting levels we wanted to achieve for the estate. Given all the positives that have come from this scheme, we will definitely be using this new lighting approach on other estates.” Enquiry No 91 www.ebpr.co.uk/card

Bilco High Load Doors Stand The Test Of Time High load access doors manufactured and supplied by Bilco to Aberdeen Harbour Board have stood the test of time and are working as well today as they did when they were installed more than 20 years ago. Six doors, each measuring 1000 x 1000 mm, are located on the industrial harbour at Aberdeen. The harbour board constantly reviews facilities to ensure they are sufficiently robust to cope with the everincreasing demands arising from the growing commercial and industrial activity. After nearly a quarter of a century’s service the Bilco doors proved they are still more than equal to the stresses and strains of everyday activity. Close inspection revealed that only the cover springs and lifting mechanisms needed replacing – but the doors themselves still operate as well as ever.

Hauraton drainage at Chesterfield FC The B2net stadium is now the home of Chesterfield Football Club. Known as the Spireites after the town’s famous crooked spire of Our Lady and All Saints Church, the club’s new 10,400 all-seat stadium has also become a landmark building and an important part of Chesterfield’s A61 regeneration programme. Built on a former glassworks site and completed in July 2010 at a cost of £13 million, it’s located about one and a half miles north of the historic town centre. The stand structures incorporate a glass fronted executive lounge and a prestigious conference/banqueting venue. The area also boasts a new hotel and Tesco supermarket just across the road from the stadium. Hauraton surface water drainage channels were specified throughout this project by Opus Joyne’s Pike Consulting Engineers. Over 1000m of the RECYFIX® HICAP® high capacity channels were used to drain the car park area surrounding the stadium. A further 430m of FASERFIX® channel and grating system was used around the pitchside. The RECYFIX® HICAP® system was installed in a single 1000m run, sweeping around the whole stadium in a large oval to drain the 36,000m² car park. Starting with HICAP® 100 a further four sizes of channel were installed in a stepped fall arrangement ending with the largest size, the 650, which has a maximum water volume per metre of 443 litres. The high storage capacity of the system meant only one gully was required. Allowing for a high storm event, the hydraulic calculations ensure the system can cope with a discharge rate of over 400 litres per second into the gully. The RECYFIX® HICAP® channels, made from 100% recycled PE-PP have integral ductile iron slot gratings that provide a durable neat appearance in the surrounding asphalt surface. For the pitch-side drainage, FASERFIX® KS 100 channel system was specified. This is a robust, fibre reinforced concrete channel with a removable ductile iron grating featuring the company’s SIDELOCK® patented boltless fixing system. Over 400m of KS100 were used around the pitch. The first league match kicked off at the new B2net stadium on 7th August 2010, happily Chesterfield won 2-1 against Barnet. Lanes Lines Chamber To Keep Lincolnshire Watertight Lanes for Drains has used Ultracoat, a revolutionary waterproofing rehabilitation system, to help a Drainage Board keep its patch of Lincolnshire free from flooding for another 50 years. The Upper Witham Internal Drainage Board (IDB) is one of 130 such organisations across the country which, together, look after water levels in over 1.2 million hectares of low-lying areas. Their job is to ensure that the excess water, which drains off the land and into the ditches, is directed into the rivers - and ultimately, out to sea. For Upper Witham IDB, that means keeping the rainwater that falls on 20,000 hectares of land flowing through 319 kilometres of maintained drains. It was at one of these stations - at North Hykeham - that Lanes was called in to tackle a problem with a leaking chamber. The pump was isolated, and the chamber outputs bunged up. The internal surfaces were coated with Ultracoat, a two-part, 100% solid, structured, epoxy lining which is applied hot using special spraying equipment to the required thickness.
