ROLL OF HONOR BANKS – In loving memory of my dear brother, Private Arthur Thomas, who was killed in action in France, 1st November, 1916. Aged 25 years. Sadly a sister is thinking Of her dear soldier brother brave, Who fell for the cause of freedom, And rests in a hero’s grave He gave his best, his life, his all. Fondly remembered by his loving sister, Lily.
To the left: Gosford Times 21.12.1916. IN MEMORIAM BANKS. – Killed in action in France, November 1st, 1916, Private Arthur Thomas Banks, youngest son of Mr and Mrs R. Banks, Matcham. He went away so bravely, His young head proudly held, His footsteps never faltered, And his courage never failed, He fought and died for Australia And the honor of his race: His King and Country called him – The call was not in vain, On Britain’s roll of honor You will find our hero’s name, For on the field of battle He bravely took his place. Gosford Times 7.12.1916. MATCHAM KILLED IN ACTION Mr R. Banks, of Matcham, was informed on Saturday morning last, that his son Private Arthur Thomas Banks, had been killed in action in France on 1st November. Deceased, who was 25 years of age, was born in Brisbane, and when a baby his parents Removed to Parramatta where he lived until about four years ago, leaving the historic old town for Matcham. He was a cabinetmaker by trade and a member of The staff of Toogood and Jones, of Parramatta, when he enlisted as a private in the 4th Battalion Infantry, 17th Reinforcements, last December. He frequently came to Matcham and became well-known and respected as the right type of young Australian. His death is sincerely regretted and we all deeply sympathise with the bereaved family in the loss of their brave soldier son and brother. The cable announcing his death was received by Rev. A. Renwick, Rector of Christ Church, Gosford.
Gosford Times 7.12.1916. A cable was received on Saturday announcing that Private Arthur Banks, youngest son of Mr. Robert Banks, of Matcham, had been killed in action on 1st November in France. Deep sympathy is expressed with the bereaved family.
Sydney Morning Herald 6.1.1917. P1. ROLL OF HONOR. BANKS – Private Arthur Thomas Banks, killed in action, France, November 1, 1916, aged 25 years, late Parramatta and Matcham. Deeply mourned and sadly missed by his loving uncle and aunt, Mr and Mrs W. Hotchkiss, and cousins, Auburn.
