Sydney Morning Herald 31st October 1917 FERNANCE;- Killed in action, France, Sept 29, Gnr Darcy Lisle Fernance, dearly loved youngest son of James and the late Sarah Fernance, St Albans, Hawkesbury River, aged 22 years.
Gosford Times 8th November 1917 Gunner D L Fernance, youngest son of Mr. James D Fernance, of St. Albans, was killed in action on September 29. He went away with the 13th Reinforcements of the 5th Field Artillery Brigade, A.I.F.
Gosford Times 31st January 1918 Memorial Service A united memorial service for Mr. William Bailey, who died some weeks ago, and for Gunner Darcy Fernance, recently killed in France, was held in the Anglican Church, St. Albans, on 13 the January. The church was crowded, and the Rev. F S Griffiths, the newly appointed Rector of St. Albans’ parish, preached a very impressive sermon. The church was draped in black, and wreaths made by Miss Ella Thompson were placed on the communion table. After the service the wreaths were presented by the rector to relatives of each of the deceased. Letters received by Mr. J D Fernance, father of the late Gunner Darcy Fernance, and Miss R Fernance, sister, from officers at the front, were read at the service, showing that our brave soldier was held in the very highest respect by his officers. Appropriate hymns were sung, and members of the congregation were visibly affected.
Gosford Times 26th September 1918 ST. ALBAN’S. Owing to the temporary indisposition of the Rector of the Anglican Church, last Sunday evening’s memorial and farewell service was held on Monday, 23rd instant, when Miss Pearl Fernance unveiled a tablet to the memory of her brother, the late Gunner Darcy Fernance, who was killed in action in France on September 29th, of last year. In the course of an appropriate address, the Rector (Rev. F S Griffiths) impresses on his hearers that he has not died a failure who has a cross in France. Mr. Griffiths has enlisted, and leaves Australia at an early date after a short ministry here.
