Gosford Times 30th July 1915 POINT CLARE GOSFORD ROLL OF HONOR To Point Clare belongs the sad duty of recording the first death among our local loads at the Dardanelles. "Killed in action, Private W J Perkins." only a few words, but they serve to bring home to us the horrors of war in a clearer sense than can be conveyed by newspaper reports. Private Perkins was in his 29th year, being born in Chippendale in 1887. One of the first to hear and answer the call of duty, he left Sydney in the Eurypides, with the first Expeditionary Force. He had been in the employ of Mr Frank Wilkinson, formerly of Ourimbah, but now of point Clare, for 16 years, but the call could not be denied, and now he has answered the last command, and given his life freely for God and humanity, Empire and Freedom. And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, Steals on the ear the distant triumph song, And hearts are brave again and arms are strong.
Gosford Times 3rd September 1915 Private E R Henry, of Wyong Creek, writes from Gallipoli:-"The death of Bill Perkins, late of Ourimbah, caused universal regret throughout the Company, he being a favorite with all."
Gosford Times 3rd September 1915 From Gallipoli THE LATE PRIVATE PERKINS Private W Perkins, of Ourimbah, was shot, at his post in the trenches at Gallipoli. His body lies not here, my men, But in a far off Turkish glen, And rests where off Gallipoli Looks out upon a bright blue sea. His sunny smile and kindly ways Cheered many a comrade's darkest days, We landed here 'midst shot and shell, Described by some a living hell. Bill was among the first to land, And with the first line made a stand. Bill's smile was not the sort to fade, In face of that fierce fusilade. In fierce attacks by day and night, He stood his ground in every fight. Such courage of times will impart A lesson to some fainter heart, And as he faces the Turkish host, He fell, a hero, at his post. Before they severed life's last strand, His thoughts flew back to his fair land. 'Tis sad, he did not live to see, The fruits of a great victory. His spirit shall not die, but rest, In hearts of those who loved him best. E R HENRY
