Dear Goshen College community and friends, In this 2016-17 Goshen College Annual Report, we celebrate the generosity of our many alumni and friends who have invested in educating our students during our last fiscal year. I hope that as you look through these pages that you imagine the impact that all of these gifts, combined, have on them, and the further impact they will have on the world that they are preparing to help lead and influence.

Whether to the Goshen College Fund, to a capital initiative or to the endowment, all gifts make a difference. On behalf of Goshen College and its students, faculty, staff and boards, I humbly thank each of you for your vital contributions. With them, we have planted seeds of hope in a world burdened with uncertainty.

The 2016-17 academic year — my final year after 11½ years of service — marked another year of change, progress and accomplishment on campus. A few highlights:

Our enrollment grew nearly 4 percent, including increasing the diversity of our students with 35 percent students of color.

The college was ranked #3 nationally by Washington Monthly, 5th Best College in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report and in the top 100 Best Value Colleges by Kiplinger’s.

We continued to show leadership in sustainability as we were honored with the Bike Friendly University award honorable mention, named Indiana’s first Bee Campus USA and I joined nearly 200 higher ed leaders by signing a letter for climate action.

Two buildings on campus were renamed to honor alumni Octavio Romero and Juanita Lark, two of the first intercultural students to attend Goshen College.

In addition to announcing that we would be offering a new Online RN to BSN program, we added 12 new undergraduate academic programs of study, including six majors, three minors, two concentrations and an education licensure add-on program, across five areas of study.

We recognized four of our outstanding alumni with alumni awards during Homecoming Weekend: Dr. Doug Schwartzentruber ’78, Ellah Wakatama Allfrey ’88, James Gingerich ’66 and Aletha Stahl ’89.

And at the end of the academic year, Dr. Rebecca Stoltzfus ’83 was appointed as our 18th president! I wish for her wisdom, awe, grace and joy, and will pray and support her in every way I can, as I trust you will as well.

Thank you for the honor of serving this great institution and for walking with me on this journey. And as I said in my farewell address, “I have no doubt that there is no past Goshen College greater than the Goshen College still to come.”

Honoring those who give Goshen College Giving Clubs The combined giving power of GC giving club members is truly phenomenal, whether they join the Builders at a minimum gift of $1 a day or the President’s Circle at $25,000 per year or more. Together, the members of these giving clubs provided $1,405,809 in unrestricted giving for the fiscal year 2016-17. The tradition of giving clubs took root at Goshen College in the 1960s, when a group of donors decided to begin giving $1,000 annually to the Goshen College Fund. Five separate clubs now support the GC Fund. These “unrestricted” gifts support every student and department on campus and allow the college to respond to needs as they arise. We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of all these friends and alumni.

Endowment funds and named scholarships Goshen College students benefit from more than 300 endowment funds and scholarships, which support both our annual operations and student financial aid.
