ACADEMIC PERSPECTIVES HEALING THE WORLD PEACE BY PEACE
FINALLY: A COLLEGE THAT WILL TEACH YOU HOW TO CURE DISEASES FIX THE ENVIRONMENT CREATE BUSINESSES WIN A GRAMMY AND MAKE PEACE IN A POLARIZED WORLD
ARE YOU UP TO THE CHALLENGE?
Right now, the only things that seem certain are uncertainty and change. The economy remains in crisis. The environment isn’t far behind. Affordable health care and housing remain a dream for many people. And conflicts continue in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Syria. It will be up to your generation to solve some very big problems and ones not yet envisioned. The good news? You seem to be up to the challenge. Here’s how Goshen College can help you prepare.
GOSHEN IS A NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED, PRIVATE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE OF THE LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES. WE ARE MOTIVATED BY JESUS’ EXAMPLE OF AND COMMITTED TO USING OUR GOD-GIVEN GIFTS TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF OTHERS.
SERVANT LEADERSHIP
At Goshen, we base everything we do on the college’s five core values. We are: CHRIST CENTERED PASSIONATE LEARNERS SERVANT LEADERS COMPASSIONATE PEACEMAKERS GLOBAL CITIZENS
CAN A SMALL COLLEGE IN THE MIDDLE OF AMERICA TEACH YOU HOW TO
MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
WELL, WE CAN CERTAINLY TRY. At Goshen, we actively apply our Christ-centered core values, including compassionate peacemaking, servant leadership and global citizenship, to every aspect of life. Our values shape how we learn and how we relate to the economy, the environment and our faith. Plus, of course, how we relate with other cultures and countries. At Goshen, you will join a community that views hope as a stepping-stone to peace and believes we can have a positive impact on our world. You may not solve all the world’s problems while you’re here (not in the first year, anyway), but you will be engaged in life-changing conversations to prepare you to make the difference you desire, whether you are studying music, accounting or chemistry. What’s the secret? Learning from experience, in and out of the classroom. Through our Study-Service Term (SST), our summer research program, our Sustainability Leadership Semester and diverse internships, students develop the intellectual and interpersonal skills that will contribute to innovation in the workplace — qualities employers most value.
A PASSION FOR CREATIVITY
Hans Weaver CLASS OF 2013 BUSINESS MAJOR NEW HOLLAND, PA. WHY GOSHEN: It was a family thing! My mother went to Goshen and so did my grandparents, so that probably had a lot to do with it. Also, I was looking for a college that had a strong business program and a strong music program. Goshen fit the bill.
AFTER GRADUATION: My business partner and I launched a business with an entrepreneurship grant from Goshen. Hopefully I’ll be involved with that. It’s called MennoTea, and it’s a play on the word “meadow tea,” which is a family recipe for a simple summertime tea.

I’M HOPEFUL: For a world where people can feel free to express themselves. A world where there’s more honor, and fewer lines drawn between people. Basically, a less cliquish world. For myself, I hope I can look back on my life and feel like I’ve had a positive impact on people.

host families, not in residence halls, and have the chance to absorb day-to-day life as a member of the community.
Founded in 1968, SST is one of the longestrunning study-abroad programs in the country. (We were one of the first colleges in the country to include an international education requirement in our core curriculum and among the first to send undergraduates to China.)
Study-Service Term also focuses on service and the importance of making a real, measurable contribution to host countries. The second half of the semester could find you helping at a health clinic, teaching English to local school children or involved with ecotourism.
Unlike most other programs, SST takes place over an entire semester and emphasizes total cultural immersion. In all locations, students stay with
Nothing furthers the process of learning and peace building more than cross-cultural understanding. And no college gets you there faster than Goshen.
In addition to on-campus classes, Goshen’s innovative May term provides opportunities for our professors to teach such subjects as canoeing on the Boundary Waters of Minnesota, marine biology in the Florida Keys, history and archaeology on Hopi and Navajo reservations, arts in London, business in Spain or China, nursing in Nepal, the Bible in Greece and Italy, and Anabaptist history in Paraguay.

WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU COMBINE
COMPASSION, CONVICTION & SERIOUS SMARTS? YOU GET THINGS DONE. Just ask the fine folks of northern Indiana: Recently, the Nursing Department at Goshen College teamed up with local healthcare professionals to host a health fair, which provided free basic services to underserved residents. And every year accounting students offer free tax filing for local, low-income residents. Whether you’re majoring in physics or religion, at Goshen you’ll have the chance to dig in and develop interdisciplinary solutions to global problems. And with small classes (most have fewer than 25 people), you are guaranteed to genuinely engage with the subject matter and your professor, who will know you by name.
If you’re an environmental science or biology major, much of your time will be spent at Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College, a 1,189-acre natural sanctuary filled with ponds, lakes and swamps. Merry Lea is also home to the Sustainability Leadership Semester and boasts Indiana’s first platinum-rated LEED building. Learn more about sustainability at GC: goshen.edu/gogreen
Interested in American Sign Language? You will get the chance to interpret during chapel or convocation. If science is your calling, you can study marine biology at Goshen’s Florida Keys facility. English your passion? Publish your poetry or essays through Broadside or Pinchpenny Press. You could also have the chance to conduct research alongside a Goshen professor, through the Maple Scholars summer research program. Maple Scholars is a great way to build up your résumé – and get a jump on grad school.

A PASSION FOR COMMUNICATING
Benjamin Kelly CLASS OF 2013 BROADCASTING MAJOR LAGRANGE, IND. WHY GOSHEN: It had everything I needed – good academics, baseball, and broadcasting. I think it’s important for people to know that you don’t have to be Mennonite to be happy here. I was raised Catholic, but I’ve come to understand and respect the Mennonite faith.
AFTER GRADUATION: I’m getting my degree from the college that was named both the Television School of the Year and Radio School of the Year. I also helped our radio station, 91.1 The Globe, win the award for Best College Station in the Nation. Right after graduation I start my first job broadcasting professional baseball.
I’M HOPEFUL: That eventually people in the world can learn to tolerate each other and learn to live as neighbors. I’m hopeful for myself. Journalists aren’t just figureheads who talk about the news. We are also, as people, trying to make the world a better place.
